The royal couple yesterday appeared to relish the new challenges to come as they left St Mary’s Hospital and spoke openly about their ex- periences. Lights at the pal- ace could be seen burning well into the night. One of their first visitors at their home at Kensington Palace the next morning was Kate’s sister Pippa and it is understood her parents, Mi- chael and Carole, might also visit as well. Prince Harry, already dub- bed the ‘‘fun uncle’’, also lives in another wing of Kensington Palace but was expected to be on hand today. Kate’s younger brother James Middleton was also expected to visit. The palace has confirmed for the first time that the cou- ple will not have a nanny and will rely on their families in- stead for help. Perhaps they too could help with names as William and Kate yesterday admitted they’ve not yet made up their mind on a name for the baby prince and coyly said that was still a few days away. It was a magical day for Britain yesterday with suc- cessive developments build- ing until the moment the royal family left the hospital and spoke to media, some of whom had been waiting three weeks at the front of the central London hospital for that moment. First Kate’s hairdresser Amanda Cook Tucker ar- rived at the hospital just af- ter lunch with a royal aide not far behind delivering a standard $130 baby car seat. Then about 3pm, Kate’s parents arrived to greet their grandchild for the first time, arriving in a taxi and waving to the crowd. By 5.30pm when Prince Charles and Camilla arrived crowds were 10 deep right along the 100m frontage of the maternity wing. Then at 7.13pm local time the main act came out. William and Kate came out to pose for photos on the steps of the hospital, taking turns to cradle and show the world the tiny prince who was welcomed to the world with rapturous applause and cheers, and the click of hun- dreds of cameras. Then the royal family broke protocol and walked across the road to the media pool for an animated chat. ‘‘Well he’s got a good set of lungs on him that’s for sure,’’ William gushed, barely aud- ible under the cheers from the crowd, some who had waited days for the moment, others who saw things build- ing on live TV news broad- casts and had rushed down at the last minute.
