On October 30, 2010, a wildly diverse group of coffee professionals from around the world gathered in College Station, Texas, to decide whether and how the coffee industry should support a global research and development program to increase supply and quality of Arabica coffees. After three days of thought- provoking discussion, the consensus was unanimous. Today, we are happy to announce the establishment of World Coffee Research (WCR), created fully through your support to the Global Coffee Quality Research Initiative (GCQRI) Genesis fund. Genesis donors generously contributed approximately $300,000 to make this happen. WCR and the Borlaug Institute are excited to report that their contributions will result in the launching of a results-oriented research program conducted in target origin countries in the summer of 2012. WCR is the 501 (c)(5) non-profit, collaborative research and development program of the global coffee industry to grow, improve, and protect supplies of quality coffee to fuel the growth of the dynamic coffee industry that directly affects the livelihoods of over 100 million people globally. The program is funded and driven by the global coffee industry, guided by producers, executed by renowned scientists and managed by the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture of the Texas A&M University System. World Coffee Research will serve as the impetus and mechanism by which the supplies of Arabica coffees and the quality of those supplies will be increased through partnerships among origin countries, the coffee industry, producers, and national and international research and extension organizations. WCR is the 501 c5 non-profit, collaborative

research and development program of the global

coffee industry to grow, improve, and protect

supplies of quality coffee.

News | March 2012

The coffee supply chain is vulnerable. Supplies of

quality coffee may be inadequate to meet current

and projected needs. The effects of climate change

and the lack of coffee biodiversity are threats and the R&D toolbox to fix the

problems is appallingly lightweight for this $50 billion global industry.

WCR is the program that

will fix the problem.

World Coffee Research is your research and

development program. It is not a charity. Whether

you’re an exporter, trader, importer, roaster, retailer or an allied partner, this program directly affects

your business.

Recently, the WCR has received anchor-funding commitments from a number of supporters, totaling approximately half of the $1.5M/year needed to fund the WCR research agenda. These initial commitments were quickly followed by multi-year commitments from several of our genesis donors and other companies. The result is that we now anticipate having enough funding by the end of March to launch the research program and therefore will hold the first WCR board meeting at the National Coffee Association Convention to review and approve the WCR Research Plan. Now is the time get on board and join those that have already committed by pledging.

THE BENEFITS OF WCR MEMBERSHIP Besides playing a role as a partner in an industry-wide effort to increase the availability and application of coffee research, there are other benefits in becoming a member of WCR. Your company’s logo and website URL will be placed on our website. We are happy to work with you on joint press releases to highlight your support to sustain the quality coffee sector and the livelihoods of coffee producers. You will also be given a guide to the scientific experiments and trials at origin, complete with contact information so that you can visit the research sites in your travels. Members will be encouraged to assist in research in a variety of ways: by volunteering their cupping skills to evaluate the quality of WCR’s scientific work, providing their knowledge on specific subject matters, as well as by participating in research surveys and on the Board’s industry advisory committee. Members of World Coffee Research will be invited to the annual scientific colloquium where results will be presented and discussed by WCR scientists.
