Chairman´s word

Meet us at network meeting at EUROTIER After a couple of months having dry summer, low harvest yields and African Swine fever as the dominant and sad topics for the association's members - it is a pleasure for DFA's board to invite all members and your employees to a relaxing "Networking" meeting at EUROTIER in Hannover - November 14. The meeting is combined with presentation about agricultural situation in Vietnam, Chi-na and Future Farming. We have joined our new "DFA Innovation Group" having representatives of both com-pany members and DFA's board of directors. At the first meeting of the group, there was a good talk about what the different member-categories can do for each other and in common. And specific actions were also agreed on future joint projects. African swine fever has also been much discussed topic within the DFA's board and sec-retariat since last newsletter was issued. On request, DFA arranged a theme meeting with ASF as the only item on the agenda on 26 September. In addition to a number of informative presentations, a steering group was set up at the meeting to organize fur-ther work on developing a model for a "Biosecurity certification" and investigating the possibility of establishing an insurance scheme. Read more about all of that in this version of the DFA Newsletter. Yours sincerely Jytte Rosenmaj, Chairman DFA

Crop manager course - starting February 2019

Several DFA member companies have requested an MSP similar course targeted "mid-level" crop managers on large farms. And during the summer we have received positive comments from the companies who have seen our first draft of the course programme.

Course leader will be Crop Consultant Ann Louise Worsøe, who is also the coordinator of one of DFA crop benchmarking groups. She is assisted by Povl Nørgaard, who is the course leader for the corresponding course, targeted pig managers.

The program will be sent to DFA members in mid-November. The course consists of 3 seminars – each having 4 days program - the first is held in week 8, - 19 - 22 February in Denmark. The following seminar is held in Romania in primo June and the last one in mid-October 2019.

Interested, please contact Povl Nørgaard, phone + 45 3172 0145 or to the secretariat

New ERFA group for pig managers is established - there is room for a few more

DFA is in the process of establishing an ERFA group for pig managers - which is a continuation for the team of pig managers who completed their MSP course in June. With the 10 -11 regis-tered, we have a good basis for putting the group in action. However, there is still room for a few more participants in the group.

So the opportunity is now if you have an employee that you would like to join in an ERFA group. The first meeting is expected to be held at the end of November.

Further information and registration – contact the DFA's secretariat.

DFA General Assembly and Conference on 10 January 2019

The DFA General Assembly 2019 will be held on 10 January at Hotel Pejsegården in Brædstrup. As previous years, the general meeting is followed by a conference with a number of interesting posts relevant to the member circle.

Based on experience from last year, the date of the general meeting has moved a week ahead, so it does not collide with the Danish Crop Congress as well as Nutrifair.

So therefore - reserve the date already.

Future Farming - study trip to Holland 19-21 February

The use of new robot technology in the field of cropping is under rapid development and we have highlighted the actual experiences with this at presentations at recent conferences. Now we think time is ripe to study the technology more in-depth in practice. The Netherlands is one of the EU's most advanced countries using this technology.

The DFA Board of Directors therefore organizes a study trip for members to the Netherlands at the end of February.

The study trip is under planning and is expected to take place on 19 -21 February. We plan to make it together with Dutch "HollanDoor, personified by Geersten van der Lugt. From DFA Hans Poulsen, Agro Cocora, is our expert during the planning of the trip.

We will return before Christmas with a final program, as well as the price for the trip.

ASF committee set up at ASF theme meeting 26 September in Copenhagen

In recent months, African Swine Fever (ASF) has dominated the meetings in a lot of DFA mem-ber companies, as is the case with the professional press.

The situation is serious in many places, why the DFA Board has decided to back up the members as much as possible in the attempt to eradicate the disease, as well as ensure the maximum protection afforded to it. And finally, support the attempt to draw up an insurance agreement, giving the pig production members a better economic protection in everyday life.

It is not DFA, which ultimately will be responsible for this process, but as a facillitor we will assist the members and help to facilitate and promote the process where there is a need.

At a DFA arranged ASF theme meeting in Copenhagen on 26 September, no less than 65 partici-pated. They received a good orientation about the spread and possible eradication of the dis-ease, including status on the development of a vaccine. The subject was handled by two very knowledgeable experts in the field, namely Professor Jens Peter Nielsen, Copenhagen University and Professor Jose Manuel Sanchez-Vizcaino Rodriques from Madrid University.

With regard to the prospects of a possible upcoming vaccine, the US based company Zoetis has just been licensed by the US authorities to work on developing a vaccine. When a vaccine is ready for use - it is not known at present.

In addition, participants at the theme meeting were informed about the possibilities for collec-tive insurance against loss caused by ASF. Contributors about this were Nicolaj Schmidt, Ensure and Claus Kirk, Risk Map.

Furthermore, Claus Baltersen, CEO, Idavang told about his experience with the second time having hit a swine herd as a result of outbreaks of ASF - despite a high level of bio-security. He was still frustrated by not being able to find the route of infection.

Finally, Stig Mellergaard, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, explained the EU rules regarding ASF. In his view, the actual rules are outdated in a number of areas.

At the end of the meeting, the pig-producing companies reduced a steering group consisting of:

• Jørgen Tørnæs, Agro East • Claus Baltersen, Idavang • Jens Peter Aabyen, Goodvalley

Page 8: News Letter no. 97 - Danish Farmers Abroad · 2018-10-30 · In this issue: Chairman´s word . ... 34 members are packing their suitcase for DFA's study trip to Mexico On Sunday,

• Thomas Nørgaard, RBPI • Max Kruse, IFU • Lars Drescher, DCHI and representative of the DFA board • Johannes V. Hansen, DFA Secretariat

It has been decided that the steering -group will continue with the following:

• Mapping what is needed to minimize the risk of swine fever in own stables. In order for this mapping to create value for the outside world, it must be developed on a scientific basis and in collaboration with experienced experts having great competence in the field. Such mapping is called a "white paper" in the academic world. This mapping should initially pro-vide the basis for insurance companies' assessment of the DFA members as an insurance case, and subsequently provide the basis for a "Biosecurity certificate".

• Provide a proposal (forecasting) on joint insurance either in the form of a joint insurance company or through a Brooker offer. The aim is to get an insurance scheme established within1. June 2019.

In order to provide funding for this feasibility study, all DFA members with pig production are invited to contribute in this work. Every relevant member has been contacted directly by a writ-ten letter.

African swine fever out of control in China

Source: Extracts of Agriculture & Food 22 October 2018

For a description of the seriousness of the ASF situation, we have chosen to bring a current situ-ation report from China.

For the first time, cases of ASF have now been reported in one of the southern Chinese provinc-es. So far all previous cases have been in the northern and eastern provinces. Southern China is the region in China having the highest consumption of pork meat.

Page 9: News Letter no. 97 - Danish Farmers Abroad · 2018-10-30 · In this issue: Chairman´s word . ... 34 members are packing their suitcase for DFA's study trip to Mexico On Sunday,

News Letter 97 October 2018

In total, since August, China has reported about more than 40 eruptions in 11 provinces or au-tonomous cities / regions. And more than 200,000 pigs have been killed in the fight against the disease.

The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture warned again on Friday, October 19, about the possibility of rising pig prices up to the Chinese New Year, where the consumption of pork typically peak. A spokesman from the ministry also said that the supply of pork is expected to be sufficient over-all.

However, the ban on the transport of pigs limits the supply of pork meat in certain regions. In the eastern province of Zhejiang, prices for pigs are now reported at 18.32 yuan / kg (17.20 kr. / kg) against a national average of around 14 yuan / kg (13.14 kr. / kg).

After week 42, ASF was found on a larger herd of 20,000 pigs in the northeastern province of Liaoning, the Chinese Deputy Minister of Agriculture has urged local authorities to map all ma-jor herds in the fight against ASF.

The assessment from DFA's contacts in China is quite pessimistic as to how well China's authori-ties control the critical situation. The number of outbreaks is estimated to be far higher than the official numbers.

Several assume that the spread is large among the small herds, where untreated food waste is used as feed on the farms. Furthermore, livestock markets are still widely used and practice is to take pigs not sold home again. Also boar centers are still widely used in China and there is no one that can move infection as a moving boar.

It is thoughtful that the description here draws a picture very similar to the conditions in Den-mark before we made Aujezsky remediation in the late 1970s.

Very good and learnable cattle study trip to Holland

With 16 participants from Denmark, Poland, Lithuania and Serbia, the delegation had a very nice trip on the DFA-organized study tour to Holland, conducted in collaboration with Schippers Holland.

The program was composed with the help of Schipper's sales manager in Denmark, Martin Vormeer. The trip offered a visit to 3 different dairy cattle farms with modern technology - in-cluding a HiCare Farm with new production concepts; Visit to Holland's largest dairy cattle farm with 2,000 dairy cows and finally a visit to a family farm built on the previous lakebed near Le-lystad.

Modern technology was studied at HiCare Farm

The program also allowed a visit to a herd of 700 goats, which was milked in a modern "carou-sel". The farm had its own dairy for the production of goat cheese, as well as a very good res-taurant, where the DFA delegation enjoyed the evening meal.

Furthermore, Pali Group, which is Holland's largest cattle slaughterhouse, was visited and finally we visited Denkavit, which specializes in the production of feed and dairy products for the smallest livestock - calves and pigs. At Denkavit, the group also visited the company's two new visitor farms - one with milk production and one with pig production - both companies having the latest technology implemented.

Overall, it was 3 inspiring days in Holland for the DFA group.

ERFA Group visited 6-floors pig stable in Estonia

Most pig producers have heard that in several places in China, pig stables are being built with several floors - farms with up to 9 floors have been featured in agricultural media. The fact that the establishment of pigs is not a new invention, one of the DFA ERFA groups proved during their meeting at the beginning of October at Rakvere Farmid, Viljandi, Estonia.

The farm was built back in 1969 and has a pig herd of 8,400 sows with partial "full-line" produc-tion. The farm's weaned pigs and slaughter pigs are housed in a barn building on 6 floors. How-ever, two of the floors were actually on site during renovation.

Although the stable system provides certain occupational and ventilation challenges, the farms were well functioning and the pigs were of good quality.

Farmer Rakvere Farmid is owned by Finnish HK Scan, which operates pig production and slaugh-terhouse in a larger scale in Estonia, Finland and Sweden. HK Scan also has activities in Latvia and Lithuania, as well as in Denmark.

DFA "Feed Mill ERFA" group visiting Denmark

Feed is a very large part of the cost of all livestock production and optimal feed quality is essen-tial for high production efficiency. It is therefore a major responsibility the employees of the DFA members feed mills have.

Therefore, it is also pleasing that we had once again gathered a group of "Feed Mill Managers" for a course / ERFA meeting - this time in Denmark.

Page 12: News Letter no. 97 - Danish Farmers Abroad · 2018-10-30 · In this issue: Chairman´s word . ... 34 members are packing their suitcase for DFA's study trip to Mexico On Sunday,

During the meeting in Denmark, the group gained insight into quality management of raw mate-rials and finished foods at Nutrimin in Ans, Hamlet Protein, Horsens and Hornsyld Kø-bmandsgård. Carsten Lind Pedersen is the coordinator of the group.

In addition, they received a professional presentation by Birgitte Bendixen, Elite Opti, and last but not least, they visited "ENORM Biofactory" – a company building a production of animal protein based on fly larvae.

The atmosphere was good among the participants, representing 7 companies and 6 nationali-ties.

The group decided to meet once a year in November.

The first meeting is held in the "DFA Innovation Committee"

As previously mentioned, the DFA's company-members elected 5 members during the confer-ence in Brædstrup on the 12 June, to join the new established "DFA Innovation Committee". In addition, the committee has three representatives from the DFA Board. The committee has been gathered for the first time on Friday 5th of October at Combigas in Give.

The first meeting was largely used to find the basis for the committee's work and a number of topics came into play. In order of priority, you may mention:

• Cooperation on education at different levels • Co-operation to provide agricultural workers and company members with agricultural

workforce • Cooperation on study trips • Promote Danish agriculture and suppliers to agriculture abroad - in order to obtain a

premium price • Visualize sustainability as a quality stamp • Help promoting high CSR goals among members with "UN 17 World Objectives" and

Global Gab as sightlines.

Around the subject of education, it was agreed to work on a joint project. "Future Farming" and "African Swine Fever" are other subject areas where concrete measures are taken.

The group will meet 2-3 times a year - next time on January 9, 2019 - the day before the DFA general assembly and conference.
