CHAMPAGNAT HOUSE MASS

The Champagnat House Mass this week focused on the call to service. In her welcome one of the House Leaders, Hayley Cashmore said “As Christians we are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and serve others selflessly. Marcelin Champagnat was a man who dedi-cated his whole life in the service of God and others. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Last Friday Marist College participated in the 2010 Stage Challenge at the Aotea Centre. Months of intensive preparation and rehearsals culminated in a stunning performance for which we received third place in the Open Division.

The theme shows how video games warp and glamorize violence, by desensitizing our younger generation to war without properly remembering or respecting the past thus ignoring the threat of potential future wars. War is not a game - there is no restart button. ‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning we are forgetting them.’

The judges were impressed with student leaders’ clever direction which involved layering a simple story so that the soldier’s memory of the past was mirrored in his present interaction with two grandchildren. ‘Brilliant’ was the verdict.

I thank most sincerely parents for their support and congratulate all the students and staff in-volved. Particular commendation to the following for their leadership, hard work and commitment:

YEAR 13 ROTORUA FIELD TRIP On Thursday 17 June twenty Year 13 Geography and Tourism girls left at the crack of dawn to travel to Rotorua for 2 days to study Tourism and how it operates in Rotorua. There was a great deal of anticipation about what was in store for them as we left Auckland and headed south. When we arrived in Rotorua there was time for a quick lunch before heading off to Wai-O-Tapu to experience some of the geothermal wonders of Rotorua. This was followed by a visit to Te Puia, more geothermal including the “hot seats”, before heading to Kiwipaka to settle in for the night. Once we were settled in the owner of Kiwipaka gave the girls an informative talk about his business and where it fits into the whole industry in Rotorua.

Friday morning involved a visit to the Agrodome for the Farm Show and talk by one of their marketing staff before heading back into town. We visited the Museum, housed in the old Bath House, where we were given an informative presentation about the history of tourism in Rotorua, including an interactive movie. From here the Geography girls were dropped in town to do some field work while the Tourism girls, accompanied by Mrs Kreft, went on a Famil visit to the Millennium Hotel, to see what was involved in working the industry.

After this we made our way to Skyline Skyrides where girls and some staff enjoyed a couple of Luge rides before we headed home. The Geography girls gained a better understanding of Tourism in Rotorua to help them with their exams at the end of the year. The Tourism girls gained an insight into the Tourism industry, which will help them with the unit of work they are now working on for credits in their Introductory Certificate of Travel and Tourism.

YEAR 9 GROUP SPEECHES EXPOSITION

The Year 9 Group Speeches Exposition was held in the Drama Room last Tuesday. A selection of group speeches were presented to Mrs Johnson, Mrs Taylor and Ms O’Dwyer. Recently all Year 9 students presented their visual assessments on an is-sue or cause on the theme of Ecological Sustainability. Topics included:

SUNDAY STAR-TIMES SHORT STORY COMPETITION

The Sunday Star-Times in association with Whitcoulls welcomes students to participate in their short story awards. Secondary School Division:

1st prize: $1000 cash, story published in the Sunday Star-Times, work experience day at Random House, plus $500 worth of Random House books and a $500 Whitcoulls gift card for the finalist’s school.

2nd prize: $500 cash, story published in the Sunday Star-Times, plus $300 worth of Random House books and a $300 Whitcoulls gift card for the finalist’s school.

3rd prize: $250 cash, story published in the Sunday Star-Times, plus $200 worth of Random House books and a $200 Whitcoulls gift card for the finalist’s school.
