Container Shipping 2018: BIMCO Issues Cautious Report

BIMCO, the international shipping association representing shipowners, has reported that it expects the container shipping segment to see a net �eet growth of around %4.1 in 2018 and that “pro�tability is up for grabs” this year.

The positive news was, however, followed by a warning, as BIMCO said that the growth would only take hold if demand kept at %5-4

and actual �eet growth was “handled with care”.In an announcement, BIMCO said that 2017 was a better year for container shipping compared to 2016 as freight rates went up, their volatility was reduced, demolitions went down and the idle �eet was "generally reactivated".

2018 a Year of Transformation for Port Operators

Asyad gets approval to operate Port SultanQaboos from Jan

Asyad has been granted licence by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) to operate Port Sultan Qaboos,

including ship handling from January 2018 ,1. Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications, said, “Obtaining the licence to manage and operate Sultan Qaboos Port by Asyad is a promising strategic step in the operation and management of local and international ports and docks.” An MoTC statement said Asyad submitted to the ministry an action plan for the management of operations at the port, including the status of workers employed by the Port Services Corporation (PSC), the current operator.

2018 could be a de�ning year for global ports industry, according to the international law �rm Ince & Co, which has advised port operators to expect a year of transformation.

The transformation will be driven by shifting economic trends, trade �ows and global demographic patterns, in tandem with changes in port ownership and ongoing investment in modernization and expansion, the law �rm said.

“Recent years have been marked by changing fortunes across the world’s ports,” Ton van den Bosch, head of Ince & Co’s global ports & maritime infrastructure practice, said.
