To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world’s work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied. When is the last time you’ve “welcomed the opportunity of contributing….in the community where (you) are placed?” I know, I know…you’re already spread too thin to take on yet another responsibility; you paid your dues years ago, or maybe you’ll volunteer when the kids are older….. We can certainly come up with lots of excuses not to take on a leadership role with the collegiates or alumnae club; and most--if not all--are really justified! But, the fact is, someone has to agree to take on some responsibility, or we cannot continue to function.

This year, I encourage you to consider “welcoming the opportunity to contribute” by serving as an alumnae chapter officer. Junior Circle is a way for young alumnae to remain involved in the Fraternity. We cater to recent alumnae through those in their mid-30s, holding social, philanthropy and other events, and we work in conjunction with the existing Troy Alumnae Chapter.

Last year, we held three events—a coffee break at Village Coffee, dinner and drinks at the Half Shell and a philanthropy event to benefit the House of Ruth women’s shelter in Dothan. On March 5, 2011, we participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk for Diabetes at Westgate Park in Dothan.

I am currently interested in finding a younger alumna to take over as Junior Circle president, as I live in Ozark and now work in Dothan, making regular visits to Troy is difficult. Anyone interested in getting involved as president or as a member can e-mail me at [email protected] or join us on facebook at “Alpha Gamma Delta – Wiregrass Area Junior Circle.”

Permanent SecretaryMaintain updated file of alumnae chapter members (and, for our chapter this includes maintaining Gamma Sigma alumnae worldwide)Maintain Records of Service forms for alumnae in order to nominate them for Honors of Epsilon Pi, and to validate service of past chapter members should they relocate and become nominated for an Honor by another chapter

And, it goes without saying, that each officer should make an attempt to attend alumnae functions, and/or see that her office’s responsibilities are covered by someone else in her absence. New officers must be installed and reported to International by April 15th. If you have any interest in serving in some capacity, even if you’re not sure which office is best for you, I urge you to call me so I can answer questions, share more details, and submit your name as a nominee if you so desire. Please don’t wait for me to call and beg…if you have an interest, let me know so we can reduce the amount of time and effort needed to present a slate of officers for the coming year. And, yes, I will be vacating the president’s office so I welcome the opportunity to discuss this position with anyone who has questions or interest.

Our alumnae chapter has gracious, hard-working members who are ready to help when called upon. Please step up and take a turn serving in a leadership role so that we can continue our wonderful strength as Alpha Gams in Troy!

gamma sigma Chapterth40 Anniversary

On February 12th, over one hundred fifty alumnae, along with ninety two collegiate sisters gathered in Troy to celebrate Gamma Sigma’s 40th Anniversary. With over half of the chapter’s charter members in attendance, Gamma Sigma reveled in all its past accomplishments, its enduring bonds of sisterhood, and the shared memories that make sorority membership so special. The official activities began with the annual celebration of International Reunion Day, which was approved for the early date (as you know, it’s traditionally held in April) by International Headquarters to allow the large gathering of alumnae members the opportunity to celebrate with their collegiate sisters at their alma mater. Scrapbooks dating back to the 1969 Alpha Omega Colony, along with brag boards and vintage rush outfits were displayed on tables in the ballrooms, while a slideshow projected former collegiates in action. After what seemed an unending series of squeals and hugs by women seeing each other for the first time (for some) in twenty or thirty years, the program began with the singing of Grace, followed by a lunch meal. Collegiate members were overheard remarking, “This is how we’ll act one day, isn’t it?” Just when alums had seemed to compose their emotions, Tresa Hardin, 1985 initiate, began to sing her heart out with Till There Was You (from 1970’s Music Man rush skit), a rendition of Memories that was every bit as moving as Barbra Streisand’s, and a perennial favorite of Gamma Sigma’s for the past ten years, Feels Like Home. Interspersed with the tear-jerkers, Tresa brought back all the former and present Grease and Supremes/Temptations’ cast members to the front of the room to sing and dance their versions of Gamma Sigma’s long-running recruitment (a.k.a. rush) skit songs. And, oddly enough, the oldies still remembered their dances, although the moves were a bit more labored. Rhonda Kelly Callen, charter president, delighted the audience with her account of the beginnings of the chapter, and she was followed at the podium by three other alumnae—Eva Carter, Ronda McCaul Walker, and Kelsey McLemore, representing each decade--who spoke about the chapter and its lasting effect on each of their lives. The charter members presented the collegiates with a lovely engraved

welcome home, gamma sigmas!

silver platter, commemorating the 40th Anniversary. The luncheon was concluded by the group of over 200 Gamma Sigma’s circling, hand-in-hand, reciting the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose, and as usual, finishing with pointed fingers raised, chanting the familiar cheer.

Following I.R.D., many alumnae visited the current chapter house on Sorority Hill with collegiate members providing the tour. With an afternoon nap, fresh coat of makeup, and the wonder-working power of hot rollers and straight irons, the women were ready to continue the day’s celebration, many with spouses and dates along for the evening. The fourth floor of the Troy University Stadium Tower was the site of the evening formal, where guests attended a cocktail party and dance with music provided by Atlanta’s Coconut Cowboys. This event also served as the collegiates’ spring formal so the fun was shared by partygoers from age eighteen to sixty-five, which made it all the better! If you missed out on the reunion events, please make a point to attend the next one…you’ll be glad you did!

40th anniversary reunion by the Numbers:

Gamma Sigma is pleased to announce the addition of three alumnae initiates: Deborah Prestwood Carter, Cornelia Austin Graham, and Jessica Owens Rowell. On April 25, 2010, the collegiate chapter initiated three outstanding women into the Fraternity, and welcomed them with a Feast of Roses reception afterwards in the chapter house. All three women have Gamma Sigma ties and we are thrilled to call them our sisters!

Meet our new alumnae initiates:

Deborah Carter has actively volunteered as a “Gamma Sigma mother” for a number of years. With great talent in sewing and cooking, she has unselfishly lent her time and talents to Gamma Sigma’s collegiates over a time span of nearly 10 years. Her oldest daughter, Candace Carter Nelson, served the chapter as treasurer and now is finance advisor. Her younger daughter, Mindy Carter, is an active member of Gamma Sigma and has served as New Member Coordinator. Deborah works in the offices of the South Alabama Electric Cooperative.

Cornelia Graham is the mother of five daughters, all of whom are Alpha Gams. What’s even more remarkable about this feat is the fact that three of her Alpha Gam daughters have been presidents of their collegiate chapters (at both Psi and Gamma Sigma), and one, Holly Pugh, is currently campus relations advisor for Gamma Sigma. Cornelia is a retired elementary teacher and is actively involved with the ministries of First Baptist Church-Troy.

Jessica Rowell is a teacher at Troy Elementary School, and mother of a son with a second child on-the-way. She’s full of trojan spirit, as she is also wife of Troy University Football’s Defensive Coordinator, Jeremy Rowell. Jessica is highly respected within the community and is active with her church, Collegedale Church of Christ. Jessica’s sister, Regina, once served as Gamma Sigma’s president.

Tresa pledged Alpha Gamma Delta at Troy in the Fall of 1984 and she was initiated in 1985. Tresa came to TSU on a scholarship from the Miss Alabama Pageant. When she came to Troy State University, she didn’t know anyone here so she went through RUSH to meet people. She just felt that Alpha Gam was the place that she fit the best.

When remembering her collegiate days she said, “Some of the best days of my life were spent at TSU. I was not the most disciplined student so having to make grades was a good incentive to study. I lived in Pace Hall so there was always someone around to “encourage” me in my studies. I don’t have biological sisters so I loved having all these girls that were my sisters now. Getting ready to out was always great. It was like having a HUGE closet. You could go from room to room and put together outfits (with the permission of the sister of course) have your hair done in one room, then go to the next room for makeup. They were there jumping up

and down when you got that call on the hall payphone from the guy you had a crush on who was asking you out on a date. Then when that same phone rang saying your Grandmother was in the hospital and you needed to come home they were there with hugs and prayers. I had many obligations as Miss TSU. I could always count the Alpha Gams to be there or just send a supportive note or loan me a dress no matter how big or small the event was. We just did that for each other.”

When she was in college, Tresa was the AGD Representative on the Panhellenic board. She was also very involved on campus and received many honors. She was Miss TSU, Sigma Chi-Miss Fall Rush, Sigma Chi Pledge Class Sweetheart, Sigma Chi Sweetheart, Delta Chi Calendar Girl, A member of the Colligate Singers, Pied Pipers Touring children’s theatre group, A Trojan Ambassador, Opera workshop and Theatre productions, Alpha Psi Omega-dramatics fraternity and she worked as a student worker in the Admissions Office.

After graduating, her first job was as an Admissions Counselor at Troy. Then she traveled with Governor Guy Hunt as a singing ambassador to promote travel and tourism for the state of Alabama. After that Tresa got her first Cruise Ship gig as a singer. For the next 11 years she worked as a professional singer on ships, casinos, & resorts from Alaska to Atlantic City to the Amazon and all through Europe. She moved to Nashville in 1998 still traveling for a few years after that. She has been at Sony/ATV Music Publishing for close to 9 years. Tresa has done many things within the company from working in the mailroom and front desk to her current position where she works with their International affiliates clearing their copyrights, which range from Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift, for commercials,

live stage productions and merchandise. She wanted to mention that her introduction to the woman that was President/CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing at the time was by her Alpha Gam sister, former roommate, Leslie Ann Jones Scrushy. When asked if she could go back to her college days now that she’s older and wiser and do anything differently she said she wouldn’t change anything. Tresa loved being young and being able to make mistakes that she hopefully learned from. Teresa said that she uses skills learned from her collegiate Alpha Gam days in her day-to-day life. Tresa said, “she learned that everyone is different but we all have the basic need to be listened to and to be treated the way we want to be treated. When you have such a diverse group of girls you learn to deal with many personalities. Should you forget to do that, and we all did at times, you couldn’t just walk away because they were your sister and you would see them the next morning, then at Saga for lunch and at the chapter room that night. You had to deal with it-neither of you were going away. “

Tresa’s current hobbies/interests include reading and shopping. She has a little sister through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization and is active with her church worship department.

When asked how Alpha Gamma Delta most influenced her life Tresa said, “Being away from home for the first time can be traumatic. As soon as I was welcomed into AGD I had an instant family. That love and support from people that aren’t blood relatives has a profound effect on your life that you carry with you long after you leave the campus.”

Elizabeth pledged Alpha Gamma Delta in the Fall of 2007. She is from Troy, so Troy University was always prominent in her life. Elizabeth knew that TROY was where she wanted to be. Being from Troy, she heard a lot about the different sororities on campus. Every time someone spoke about Alpha Gam, it was always positive, so she knew that Alpha Gam had a prestigious reputation. As soon as she met the young ladies of Alpha Gam, Elizabeth knew that was where she belonged.

In college, Elizabeth has been extremely active with Alpha Gam, other various organizations, work, and community service. While balancing all of these obligations, she has worked hard to maintain a high G.P.A. As far as jobs, she was working at Arby’s when she started college, and she worked there for two and a halfyears. Elizabeth then worked at the Half Shell Restaurant for one and a half years, and is currently working as a tutor for Troy University at the Natural Science Learning Center and also for student athletes.

In Alpha Gam, she has been to numerous date parties, semi-formals, and formals. Elizabeth also tries to participate in the other Greek philanthropies as well. She has made the most of her efforts to contribute to Alpha Gam in any way possible. She has served many leadership roles in Gamma Sigma including Alpha Gamma Delta Homecoming Director, Membership Coordinator and the Philanthropy Coordinator. She thinks it is amazing to see her sisters growing from the typical freshman young ladies into mature women. She is so proud of them, and is honored to call them her sisters.

Elizabeth has received numerous honors and awards while being at Troy University including: Alpha Gamma Delta Freshman Scholarship Award, Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medicine Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medicine Honor Society President, Alpha Lambda

Delta Honor Society, American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Recipient, American Legion Scholarship Recipient, American Red Cross of Central Alabama Home Run Award for Distinguished Volunteer Service, Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society, Beta Beta Beta Research Grant, Chancellor’s/ Provost List, Chancellor’s Scholarship Recipient, Delta Epsilon Iota Honor Society, Department of Biology- Troy University Foundation Scholarship, Faye Ellis Memorial Award, Honor’s Greek List, Miss Troy 2007 – 2008, Mortar Board National, College Senior Honor Society, National Honor Society, National Peanut Festival Pageant Contestant, National Scholars Honor Society, Nominee for Troy University Homecoming Court 2009, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society Vice President, Order of Omega, Panhellenic Council Certificate of Achievement, PEAK Honors Program, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Troy Junior Women’s League Scholarship Recipient, and she was on the Troy University Homecoming Court 2010.

Other Organizations Elizabeth has been involved in includes the Conversation Partners Program, Habitat for Humanity Member and President, Relay for Life- Team Co-Captain, Red Cross Campus Club Member and President, Representative for Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medicine Honor Society at House of Representatives, Sigma Alpha Sigma Student Service Association, Troy University Animal Advocates, and the University Honors Alliance.

Her major is Biomedical Sciences and she will be graduating this May with honors. Elizabeth will begin UAB’s School of Dentistry on July 6th. The school is at least four years long, and she will earn a Doctorate of Dental Medicine.

Elizabeth enjoys reading, playing the guitar, swimming, traveling, and volunteer service. She is currently

working for Troy University in the Natural Science Learning Center as a tutor, and she also tutors student athletes.

When asked how Alpha Gamma Delta has most influenced your life she said, “Alpha Gam has influenced my life in many aspects. With these wonderful young ladies, I would not be the person I am today, nor would I be as successful as I am today. These women have shown me the importance of friendship, dependability, and hard work. These qualities can be seen throughout the numerous activities that we do in Alpha Gam. Support and teamwork have also been vital in my life, and Alpha Gam has shown these to me. Another important aspect is leadership. Without Alpha Gam, I would not know how to be a leader. By being elected for a few different positions in Alpha Gam, this opened up other offices in various organizations on campus. I am extremely blessed to have such an incredible group of sisters, who I am so proud of.”

Fall 2010- spring 2011: Collegiate activitiesby holland sport

2010-2011 gamma sigma president

Over the past year, Alpha Gam has continued to shine. The school year began with recruitment. We had begun making preparations since the previous spring semester and were anxious to welcome our new “baby squirrels” into our home. We were thrilled as

we heard the names of the 37 amazing new members whom we would soon call our sisters. We ended a stressful but very successful week with a fiesta themed celebration at our annual Bid Day pool party.

Fall was filled with swaps, socials, Troy football games, study hall, in-tramurals, homecoming, sisterhood events, community service activities, and Initiation. Initiation was a special time for our new sisters as well as older sisters and alumni. We were all excited to finally be able to call those 36 girls we had grown so close to our sisters, and to complete our chapter with 108 members. Our next big event following initiation was homecoming. Homecoming is always a huge event with a banner, dance, skit, and float competition. After weeks of hard work and many sleepless nights, we were

thrilled to hear our name called as the overall homecoming winners for the second year in a row!

November also kicked off our annual Fall Fest dance competition. With the help of all who participated, we were able to raise nearly $5,000 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Fall was also filled with many sisterhood events such as the pledge retreat, chapter dinners, tacky Christmas par-ties, and my personal favorite being my pledge class trip to Gatlinburg over Thanksgiving.

As the semester came to a close, we all seemed ready for a nice break, but were sad to see everyone go. It’s the breaks like Christmas and sum-mer when you realize just how special Alpha Gam truly is.

The spring semester brought everyone back in full force. The newly elected officers were anxious to take on their new positions with a fresh perspective and new ideas to bring to the chapter. In the few short weeks since school has begun, our members have started getting back involved in some of the many organizations on Troy’s campus. Just a few weeks ago, we received the Greek Report from the fall and our members had 100% campus involve-ment, and we don’t expect that to change for the spring. We have mem-bers involved in SGA, diamond dolls, GAMMA, Relay for Life, and even track, cheerleading, and dance team to name a few of the many organizations in which Alpha Gam’s are involved. We also have many girls who will be initi-ated into different honor societies this spring and had many more who were eligible to apply for Mortar Board and Order of Omega which are two very prestigious honor societies. We had 3

girls who were accepted into Order of Omega and 2 into Mortar Board. The Greek Report also showed that our chapter, as well as our new member GPA was over a 3.0 and that we raised nearly $6,000 for charity.

We have already had our first Phil-anthropic event for the spring. Our Zumba class helped us raise nearly $2,000, and we also took home 1st place in the annual Black History Month step-show and were awarded $1,200 which will be given to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

We are also preparing for Spring Pre-view Day on March 26th which brings incoming freshman to tour the campus and gives us a wonderful opportunity to get our first taste of recruitment for the year. Also in March, we will have our annual Greek Week games and Relay for Life. Our community Easteregg hunt is set for April 20th and Parent’s and Achievement is on the calendar for April 17th.

Although the spring semester has only just begun, we all know how semes-ters seem to fly by, so we plan to have many more of those sleepless nights full of hard work and delirious laughter in order to make as many memories possible in our short time in Alpha Gamma Delta.

“Over the past year Alpha Gamma Delta has continued to shine!”

Alpha Gamma Delta Legacy Introduction Form

A legacy is a woman in a family relationship such as a daughter, sister or granddaughter to an Alpha Gamma Delta member in Good Standing.

Alpha Gamma Delta believes that legacies are important to our Fraternity because they bring loyalty, strength, pride and support to our chapters. Ideally, this form is sent to an Alpha Gamma Delta collegiate chapter while the legacy is in her junior or senior year in high school, alerting members of the chapter that she may arrive on campus. Chapter members should strive to meet her during prospective student visit days and introduce themselves as Alpha Gamma Delta members. Even though a niece or a cousin is not a legacy, a member may use this form to introduce such a young woman if she feels the chapter would benefit from her becoming a member.

It is the responsibility of the legacy’s ΑΓ∆ relatives and friends to send a Recruitment Information Form to a collegiate chapter, notifying them that she will participate in recruitment.

An ΑΓ∆ legacy must be a qualified potential new member in her own right: scholarship, activities, accomplishments and overall compatibility with the chapter.

The Fraternity expects all collegiate chapters to give serious consideration to each legacy out of courtesy to her ΑΓ∆ relative and encourages pledging our legacies. However, since chapters choose their own members, they are not required to offer a bid to a legacy.

A legacy must be invited back to the first invitational round of events.

If the legacy is released by the chapter, an advisor must telephone her ΑΓ∆ relative and notify her of this decision.

If the legacy attends the preference event or final function, she must be placed within the chapter’s first bid list. Remember—Membership growth is the responsibility of every Alpha Gamma Delta member.

This form must be kept for one year after a legacy’s anticipated arrival on campus.

If she does arrive on campus, the chapter must keep the form until she pledges a group, graduates or leaves school permanently.
