I am delighted to have this opportunity to address all the employees at GRUPO ANTOLIN, readers of this magazine, and congratulate your for your excellent work during 2011. Despite the financial year being a complex one in terms of the operating environment, we were able to respond to this new challenge and we have achieved the best results in the history of our com-pany. The consolidated revenue figure grew by more than 14.5% and the ratios such as EBITDA and EBIT were at an all-time high in absolute terms.

The first few months of 2012 are proving to be equally important. We have entered the Italian market, through the acquisition of the business of the Italian company CRS, a specialist in interior trims, establishing a new Tech-nical-Commercial office there. January also saw the completion in Frankfurt of the acquisition of CML Innovative Technologies, a French lighting sys-tems group. These acquisitions will allow us to offer our clients INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS with greater added value, and will mean an extension of our international presence to 25 countries (including Italy and Romania).

As part of our INTERNATIONALISATION strategy, I must highlight the impor-tant agreement signed by Grupo Antolin with the Japanese supplier Kasai Kogyo. This global alliance will translate into a series of cooperative initia-tives between both companies as part of various projects in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, India, Russia, China, USA and Thailand.

Another of our key strategies is DIVERSIFICATION. For Granph Nanotech, the brand used to market our graphene, it is turning out to be a particularly excit-ing year, since over the months it has attended the most prestigious events in the nanotechnology sector, held in Tokyo, Cambridge and Santander.

Our role as global supplier allows us to promote economic development and social progress in the countries where we operate, and to safeguard questions of an ethical nature that arise in the workplace. We have taken a further step in implementing the Grupo Antolin Code of Ethics and Con-duct, through the signing of the Internal Regulations which will contribute to increasing respect for and compliance with the content of this Code.

I would like to finish by welcoming Jesús Esmorís, our new Managing Di-rector, and thanking you all in advance for your help as he settles in his integration process into the company. I would also like to share with you the pride I feel in being able to rely on the more than 13,000 PROFESSION-ALS who are the reason for the real success of the company. I would urge you to keep working with the same enthusiasm in the second half year just starting, anticipating the needs of our clients and basing our success, as ever, on technology, continuous training and all our intellectual capital. w

We welcome the summer with an invitation to read the pages of this newsletter. We begin this number with an interview to our Chief Finan-cial Officer through which we can learn more in detail the trajectory of his career at Grupo Antolin and the assessment of what has 2011 meant for our company.

For you to enjoy automobiles, we of-fer a Geneva Motor Show report that we visited last March, with a protago-nist, the car of the year 2012 award, that went for the Volt/Ampera. From Switzerland we go to Slovakia, where earlier this year was hold the opening of a new plant in Nededza, Zilina, very close to our customer Kia.

Our Special includes the second part of “25 countries, 25 cultures”. Since the publication of the first part at 60 issue, Grupo Antolin has been set up in 2 new countries, Italy and Roma-nia. This diversity allows us to adapt to our clients needs, working from the respect to habits and customs of each country.

We also offer a lovely central image provided by our design centre in In-dia. Represents the celebration of Di-wali, a public holiday known as the “festival of lights”, which symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. This is one of the most significant and joy-ous nights of the year.

In addition, we present the other reg-ular features including Briefs, where you can meet the new Managing Di-rector of the company, read more de-tails about our agreement with Kasai, recognitions and lots of news that we hope you will like them.

Enjoy the reading! w

CRS is a company specialized in the man-ufacture of car interior trims. Its products portfolio includes inserts for instrument panels, door panels and pillars; likewise, it produces moulds and tools for these processes.

The CRS production plant is based in Pinerolo (40 km southwest of Turin). It has an area of 7,000 m2, employs 47 people and it is expected to have between 8 and 10 million euros turnover in 2012 mostly coming from the manufacture of components for Fiat, its main final cus-tomer.

With the acquisition of CRS’s business, an expansion pro-cess starts in the Italian territory, constituting a new com-pany, Grupo Antolin-Italy, to centralize production as well as technical and commercial operations in this country.

That way, with Grupo in Italy we will strengthen our posi-tion as a global supplier, enhancing collaboration with the Fiat-Chrysler.

The purchase of the CRS business along with the recent acquisition of European lighting supplier CML Innovative Technologies, have allowed us to expand our presence to 25 countries. The company now has 96 centres and over 13,000 employees. w

InDepthWhat has been your experience in Grupo Antolin?

I have spent all my working life in our Group, where I have held various posts. I started working in Talleres Ara as soon as gradu-ated, as an administrative assistant. I was there for very little time because after nine months I joined the Finance Department of what at that time was Irausa as Head of Administration, later moving on to become Director of Financial Planning and Treas-ury. In October 2007 I became the Chief Financial Officer.

Could you explain how it is structured the Financial and Economic Management and the functions it develops?

The role of the Department is primarily the Planning, Analysis and Control of Economic and Financial operations.

Please give us a quick overview of the situation during 2011 and what is expected in 2012.

The 2011 financial year was the best year in the history of the Group, managing to exceed all its economic-financial results.

PersonalTouchWhere were you born? In Burgos, where I have always lived.

What did you study? For the first three years I studied at the Burgos School of Business Studies and later I moved to Valladolid, where I graduated in Economics and Business Studies.

A lesson you have learnt from the business world It is vital to have a real passion for what you do, as this gives you the strength you need to never give up and to keep working.

A piece of advice for young people The competition is stronger every day, they don’t give you anything: you have to work hard every day and never let up on your efforts.

What you value most in a collaborator Firstly, value, of course, but also effort, work, initiative, the ability to work in a team, taking responsibility for what you do, and of course sharing a smile.

Is ‘man good by nature’ (Rousseau) or ‘is a man a wolf to a man’ (Hobbes)? Neither one extreme nor the other: we all have our good side, but we all have a darker side too. However, we must try to ensure that our most human side wins out and that we treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves.

A book and a film that you would recommend to your colleagues As a novel that had an impact on me, Maybe the wind will take us to infinity, by Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, although I can recommend anything by Harlan Coben if you want a good and entertaining read. And film, of course, The Sting, the film itself as the soundtrack.

Please, a phrase or a quote which reflects your philosophy of life Things that are really worthwhile require a great deal of effort and determination, so you have to fix your sights on them and pursue them to the end. It is hard work, but worth it.

It confirmed the recovery which, after the crisis in the au-tomobile sector in 2009, began in 2010. Our turnover in-creased by more than 14% as a result of one of the Group’s key strengths, its diversification in terms of clients, geo-graphic locations and products.

It was also a year in which the Group started on a new voyage in terms of inorganic growth, with the acquisition of the CML Innovative Technologies group.

This year-end was characterised by a very healthy financial position, which allows the Group to face its growth chal-lenges and be ready to confront a possible new setback in the markets.

What was the basis of Grupo Antolin’s plan to counter the crisis? What have been the key factors in coming out of it stronger?

One of the main reasons, which should make all of the Group’s employees feel proud, has been our reaction to the recession.

In July 2008 the Group’s inorganic growth forecasts were very important, also having strong support from the finan-cial community which needed to finance solvent industrial initiatives to compensate for its excessive investment in the property sector.

The fall out from the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers on 15/09/2008 led to the collapse of the financial markets and started an immediate decline in our revenue forecasts.

In response to these first symptoms, Grupo Antolin’s Manage-ment successfully diagnosed the problem and put in place a series of measures, in some cases drastic, which allowed it to retain the most valuable asset at the moment: liquidity. The measures taken included cancelling investments, both organ-ic and inorganic, cost containment, customer-related initia-tives, adjustment of the productive structures to the forecast market situation and refinancing of our debt.

These actions gave the company the right cost structure for this difficult situation, one which generated sufficient cash, allowing it to not just survive the crisis but to place itself in a strong position.

One of the main problems for companies is a lack of liquidity and difficulty in borrowing. How has Grupo Antolin dealt with this issue?

The healthy financial situation described means that the lit-tle money that the banks have to lend is used for companies such as ours, which have a clear future and are very solvent.

The centralised cash management system implemented by the Group allows it to take full advantage of the financial re-sources generated, avoiding idle balances in subsidiaries and allowing us to have full access to these funds and to make the resulting savings in financial costs. Similarly, tools such as syndicated factoring allow the Group to obtain recurring and high turnover financing, so highly valued by the banks.

Have we learned anything from this crisis?

The first thing to say is that it is still not over, that our sec-tor and our company are not immune from further setbacks, which is why to a certain degree we must continue applying the measures that we took initially. What we have learned is that when we have firmly proposed something, we have achieved it, obviously applying a real effort and with the clear idea that we must continue maintaining some minimum re-turns and the correct management of our new investments, only carrying out those required to preserve the best tool for beating this recession: liquidity. We can not spend more than what we generate, excessive debt is bad.

Has the crisis led to the internationalisation of the com-pany speeding up or slowing down?

The crisis has led to a slow-down due to a lack of liquidity, but it has also demonstrated that the companies that have diversified their markets have been in a better position to deal with this crisis. Therefore, this experience must stimulate us to invest more in growing markets. This approach will undoubt-edly allow us to keep alive our investments in mature markets.

How do you see the economic situation in Spain?

Worrying, it is difficult to predict when our country will be capable of generating employment which is both stable and based on a real economy, away from the speculative markets. We have to understand that measures leading to structural change are tough but essential. We must improve our productivity to make us competitive and attract invest-ment, and this cannot happen without making changes.

Which are the best performing markets? What part of the world is “giving the orders” now?

The best performing markets are Brazil, Russia, India and Chi-na (BRIC), without forgetting the improvement taking place in the NAFTA region. It is normally the strongest that give the orders, and in the markets this strength lies with those with the greatest financial capacity, the Asian countries.

Is Grupo Antolin considering the option of acquisi-tions and alliances as a means of growth? What are the most important factors when it comes to assess-ing an acquisition?

Clearly, organic growth, through new orders, is not easy at the moment. Our market share in certain products and the invest-ments required for growth in others, make this a difficult option.

The market wants companies like ours to take holdings in certain companies and/or product lines, which owing to the difficult fi-nancial situation are crying out for a buyer. Alliances with certain suppliers are necessary to achieve a greater role for our products in clients with which we still do not have the desired presence.

Decisions on acquisitions are not easy, since it is necessary to take into account not only the returns available, but also the company’s strategy.

AUTOgraphWhy did you decide to work in the automotive industry?

I didn’t decide, when I finished my degree I had the opportunity to work in Talleres Ara.

I would not change it now, it is exciting.

Your dream car When I was young I used to watch the series “Knight Rider”,

it would be great to have a nap while the car drive, or to be able to call it so that it could come and picks you up.

An important figure to be highlighted from the automotive industry Obviously Henry Ford, a visionary ahead of his time.

What car-related intention has impressed you the most? Apart from the engine, automatic gears.

What would you have liked to invent? Bodywork that will automatically repair itself

when receiving small scratches.

Your motto behind the wheel … Calm.

What was your first car? The first was a loan, a SEAT 124 that my father lent me.

In terms of those I owned, a fifth-hand Peugeot 505.

What will be driving in 20 years time? A more intelligent car, which consumes less,

uses less contaminating energies, although they could be more expensive.

What are your main objectives for the next few years? What lies ahead for us?

Grupo Antolin has a great future, we are a company with an excellent workforce, in a healthy financial position and with shareholders committed to the company. My objective for the next few years is to achieve high growth rates, maintain-ing our position as the leading company in both the markets and society.

Your greatest achievement in the company.

At a personal level, having constructed a team with which I enjoy working. At a professional level, having been very ac-tively involved in managing the crisis.

A failure? What did it teach you?

A poor negotiation. I learned that you can never start a ne-gotiation without having analysed each and every one of the circumstances that could arise and having a plan for each of these, leaving nothing to improvisation. w

The 82nd Geneva Motor Show was held from 8 to 18 March, with more than 260 exhibiting companies from 30 different countries. This motor show, the most important in Europe, did not disappoint and produced its usual large number of new developments

In terms of the car manufacturers, it was the Germans that particularly stood out, cap-tivating the public with spectacular stands, even for the less striking cars. Also worth mentioning was the absence of the Chinese manufacturers, who had taken part in previous years and in other European motor shows. Suppliers of interiors were also not greatly represented in the Swiss Motor Show.

Despite the difficult situation in terms of cars sales in Europe, the big luxury brands continue to focus on exclusivity, being daring enough to product fantastic cars such as the Lamborghini Aventador J, with an international production run limited to just one car. However, in general the manufacturers have their feet on the ground and have chosen to focus more on daily life, on simpler and more practical models. In this context, Seat surprised with its return to its roots with the Toledo.

There was also room at the motor show for the smaller cars, and Volkswagen unveiled its Up! fleet, with Swiss, Winter, Cargo and X-up! versions, all of these being siblings of the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo. If you would like further information on all the new developments in this 2012 Geneva Motor Show, you can find trend and analysis re-ports by model on the Intranet. w

The use of nanoclays as fillers in plastic for car parts star-ted at the end of the eighties when Toyota researchers observed improvements in the mechanical and thermal properties of polyamide compound materials with small percentages of laminar clays

New Mineral Fillers in THERMOPLASTICAs part of our innovation-based strategy, Grupo Antolin is researching the application of new mineral fillers in the thermoplastic compounds that we most commonly transform

Grupo Antolin and the “nanos”

Grupo Antolin started the Cenit Project “DOMINO” in 2007, to develop new compound plastics with nano-sepiolites (NS) and carbon nanofibres (GANF) for different industrial sectors, including the automotive sector.

The best known laminar nanoclay is Montmorillonite (a filosilicate of Mg-Al). Another type of clay that can be modified to obtain a nanoclay is Kao-linite (an aluminium silicate very commonly found in nature but not very heavily used in plastic compounds). There are other types of clay, with acicular morphology, that have been less frequently used in plastic compounds, prob-ably because they are less common in nature.

There are various natural clays with acicular morphology: Sepiolite, Wol-lastonite and Attapulgite (palygorskite). Sepiolite is a magnesium phyl-losilicate, while Attapulgite is a magnesium aluminium phyllosilicate. A paper has been published recently by the Materials team at Hyundai, showing clear improvements in the scratch resistance of various plastics using Wollastonite as a filler. As a point of interest, the largest commercial deposits of Sepiolite are in Spain, in the Tajo River basin.

· ABS + NS (Nano-sepiolite) as a replacement for PC/ABS in the lighting console. Various ABS + NS compounds were developed as part of the Cenit DOMINO programme.

· Use of Basic Magnesium Sulphate as a replacement for Talc in various applications, such as sunvisor shells or pillars.

You can see a clear improvement can be seen in properties such as scratch or abrasion resistance.

Halloysite is another natural clay, with tubular mor-phology, which can be nano-structured.

Another mineral filler with a fibrous structure is Basic Magnesium Sulphate. This material has no natural origin, since the product is obtained through chemical synthesis, and it is not considered a nanofiller, but is in-stead a microfiller (it has a diameter greater than 100nm). With this type of material as the filler, instead of current fillers such as talc, there are obvious improvements in terms of weight, rigidity, impact resistance, temperature resistance and even fluidity in the transformation.

Finally, a new type of talc with a high aspect ratio (HAR) is used as a filler in polypropylene compounds to improve the mechanical and thermal resistance of car parts. This high aspect ratio talc is longer than standard talc, which is practically spherical.

Theoretically, this new type of filler is capable of stiffen-ing the polypropylene when used as a filler in low con-centrations (approximately half the amount compared to standard talc). So, to obtain the same mechanical proper-ties, we would have compounds of, for example PP+10% HAR Talc equivalent to the current PP+20% Talc.

The properties of the nano compounds depend on the following factors:

· Degree of dispersion.

· Interaction with the plastic matrix.

· Aggregates or agglomerates of the nanoparticles.

· Quantity or percentage of the nanoclays and method of processing.

Nanoclays are very polar, and therefore compatible with poly-mers such as PA, but difficult to process with non-polar plas-tics, particularly with PP. There are various methods to make these non-polar fillers compatible:

· Functionalising the surface of the nanoclays with chem-ical modifiers (such as ammonium salts) or by grafting (insertion) block copolymers.

· Using coupling agents: PPf (funcionalise the PP, with maleic anhydride for example).

The most common equipment used to mix the filler with-in the matrix is the twin-screw extruders. Grupo Antolin has a Coperion Werner ZSK 26 Mc, used to manufacture different compounds with various of the nanoclays men-tioned above, also using several thermoplastic matrices.

ABRASION SCRATCH

EXAMPLES OF THE DIFFERENT TESTS FOR USING THESE COMPOUNDS

“We hope that, in the near future, the use of some of these fillers in our product portfolio will lead to benefits for our clients such as improvements in the weight, cost and perceived quality of the final product, and there-fore create a COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE FOR GRUPO ANTOLIN”. w

The Red Table method of concerns resolution and prevention of re-occurrence is an intrinsic element of the Grupo Antolin Production System that is now used in most of the Grupo Antolin manufacturing plants. Historically, certainly in Leamington, the Red Table has been used to address external quality and internal concerns

The plant has started to use this methodology for the investigation, determina-tion of root cause, and prevention of re-occurrence of accidents. At Leaming-ton has being found that the Red Table highlights and promotes more effective investigations and route cause analysis of accidents. It also encourages emplo-yees participation and helps Health & Safety initiatives maintain a high profile with the management and all employees. w

In spring 2012, the Peugeot 207 made way for the 208. The 208 sees a change from the style of its predecessor. Its lines are more elaborate, more modern, elegant and dynamic

Grupo Antolin-Vosges

Slightly more compact than the 207, the 208 contin-ues to use the same equipment (ESP, glass sunroof, LED headlights) but with innovations (interior photosensi-tive mirror, touch screen with Sat Nav, etc.)

Grupo Antolin-Vosges has contributed knowledge, creativity and ambition to this project. The sunvisor developed for the Peugeot 208 has a production rate of 1,460 vehicles per day delivered in the Poissy and Trnava plants. PSA Peugeot Citroën wants these sunvisors to be part of its future vehicles. So for the Group, the project could mean 6,000 to 7,000 sunvisors per day with a run until 2020.

233 employees €45 million turnover 16 clients35,000 sunvisors made each day in the plant 77 delivery points around the world

The project team has developed an optimised sunvisor to this vehicle and client · Of twin shells, optimised thanks to the different processes

which allow for greater resistance to blows and to high temperatures (100ºC) without deforming.

· A small hidden mirror with a new ticket holder injected di-rectly into the mirror compartment.

Grupo Antolin-Voges focussed on an improved process to meet the PSA Peugeot Citroën challenge. The new semi-automated line created by Grupo Antolin-Vosges com-bines innovation and our experience from other projects. Thanks to the simplification of the processes for loading electrodes into the high frequency welder, this line allows us to reach the speed and quality required by the client with less investment.

BEFORE: the components are loaded one by one into the machine, by a robot or an operator.

AFTER: the new concept, called “one shot”, uses a ro-bot to simultaneously position all the components in the electrode, allowing for a reduction in loading time (and in manufacturing time), therefore increasing the capacity of the line.

After the prototype and the internal testing by the techni-cal team, the decision was made to apply this new tech-nology in the Peugeot 208.

In collaboration with our local partner CMS, a specialist in making machinery, we wrote our specifications and to-gether worked out the details of how to create the com-plete line. A new line of which we can all feel proud.

Grupo Antolin- Korea moves its officeThe 26th of December 2011, Grupo Antolin-Korea relocated its office from Suwon to Pangyo, close to Seoul. If the previous location provided easy access to R&D centres of major Korean car-makers, the new location takes more advantage of close distance to Hyundai-Kia main commercial Head office, to be much more dynamic on our business strategy.

The new office building belongs to a new technical business complex, of which still many constructions are on-going, where new R&D centres of well-known companies in advanced indus-tries are going to be settled. Most of the buildings are brand new and modern with different style and unique archi-tecture providing well managed infra-structure for business. Consequently it seems to be a matter of time when this techno valley becomes the most favour-

able working place as boosting centre of the business in Korea.

In this new office also has emphasised the company corporate image there is a new interior design in order to continue successful business as representative of Grupo in Korea. Opened in December 2007, the office has been constantly in-creasing in terms of, not only business volume, but also in the importance of our role around the outstanding grow-ing power of Korean carmakers in the worldwide automotive market for the last 4 years.

So far, GA-Korea has been cooperat-ing very actively for many Hyundai-

Kia projects in connection with other Grupo plants such as GA-Bratislava, GA-Ostrava, GA-Turnov and most re-cently with GA in Brazil and Russia. In 2012, we have been awarded with the New Hyundai i10 Project in cooperation with Ototrim, Turkey. The development is actually undergoing at Hyundai R&D centre in Korea since this January. Not only commercial and engineering co-operation, global purchasing support is regarded as one of the most efficient and successful business in this country. We hope GA-Korea office keeps on go-ing multifunctional activity and expand more business opportunities with the carmakers based on this new location investment. w

On 30 January our facilities re-ceived a visit from the Renault Palencia General Manager, José Antonio López Ramón y Cajal and Antonio Delgado Matesanz, Head of Interior equipment SQF at Re-nault Palencia.

During the visit, they could see advances achieved and quality results in Renault Megane’s door panels manufacturing process, made since their last visit attend-ed when the project started, in November 2008.

Mr. López Ramón y Cajal showed great interest in the improve-ments made, and encouraged us to continue improving in the future, since we must never be complacent; improvement and advances must always be part of our management. w

IRAMEC gave the first samples of Peugeot 208 windows regulators On October 31, 2011, after a big effort from all Grupo Antolin staff and plants involved in Peugeot 208 window regu-lators project, we delivered in PSA Por-to Real (Brazil) the first samples.

Grupo Antolin was nominated in March 2011 to supply window regu-lators from Iramec for Brazil and for Europe from GA-Lusitania. The first meeting of this project was in April 2011 at Sao Paulo and were exactly 5 months from the first meeting to the first samples.

The successful implementation of this project is due to the commitment of all the team of Iramec and to the synergy established by the Project Manager in Brazil, Juliano Oliveira and the Project

Manager in Europe, Sylvian Cadoret. Obviously it wouldn’t had been possi-ble without the support of the staff of Headquarters, R&D, Product, Process and STA as well as GA-France and GA-Lusitania.

To meet volume of 400,000 windows regulators a year, is being constructed on the Iramec’s plant a new assembly line dedicated to this project, it uses robots to assist in the assembly ope-rations.

Congratulations to all those who di-rectly or indirectly contributed to the success of this project that we remain committed to because we know that there is still much work ahead to meet the PSA targets. w

Mr. Watanabe (first for the left side), president of Kasai, with other executives of the company in the first Grupo Antolin-Kasai alliance meeting in Nashville.

In relation to our cooperation with the client Renault-Nissan, Grupo Antolin has reached an agreement with the company Kasai Kogyo to effectively address the present and future needs of that client. This agreement will be translated into a series of cooperative initiatives between both companies as part of various future projects which Renault-Nissan will launch in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, India, Russia, China, United States and Thailand.

For Grupo Antolin, the main aim of this agreement is to increase its turno-ver, principally in the area of plastics, at the same time as responding to a clear customer request. Our signifi-cant international presence and our technological know-how are our as-

sets which will make this agreement a success for the Group, helping the company to grow over the next few years.

We hope we can rely on the support of the entire organisation to ensure the complete success of this important agreement. This organisation has been established with Ernesto Antolin (Vice-President of GA), José Manuel Temiño (CEO of GA) and Mr. Watanabe (Kasai) forming the Management of the alli-ance. Pablo Baroja (GA) and Mr. Hori (Kasai) make up the Management Com-mittee. The alliance’s office is run by Jorge Juárez from GA-Shanghai, along with Mr. Tsukioka and Mr. Gogami (Ka-sai) and, coordinated from GA’s head-quarters, Iñigo Ortúñez.

The complete organisational chart is published on GA’s SharePoint - Com-munication Space - GA Universe - GA - Expansion.

The first Grupo Antolin-Kasai alliance meeting took place in Nashville, USA, from 14 to 16 February. The event was attended by 35 members of both com-panies, along with 5 guests from Pur-chasing Department at Renault-Nissan and from the Nissan Technical Centre in North America. As part of this Grupo Antolin and Kasai alliance, a Joint Ven-ture has been established in Ezichur (Or-agadam), India, close to Grupo Antolin-Pune in Chennai. The new plant, whose construction is planned to be completed this year, will initially supply door panels and pillars to Nissan. w

On 10 May, Ernesto Antolin (Vice-President of Grupo Antolin) and Pablo Baroja (Asia Pacific regional director) visited the site where the plant will be built. This event was also attended by Mr. Krishnan, staff from Grupo Antolin-Pune in Chennai and representatives of the construction company.

Grupo Antolin at the TOP TENWe don’t say so... figures do it. This year we took up inside all the cars that make the European and Span-ish Top 10 sales.

In 2011 and in this order, the best selling cars in Europe were: VW Golf, VW Polo, Ford Fiesta, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, Opel/Vauxhall Astra, Renault Clio, Ford Focus, Renault Megane, VW Passat and Peugeot 207.

In Spain: SEAT Ibiza, Renault Mé-gane, Seat Leon, VW Golf, VW Polo, Ford Focus, Peugeot 207, Opel Corsa, Opel Astra and Nissan Qashqai.

For lack of global data, we have the US figures, where we are also pre-sent in five of the top ten: the Ford F-Series, a pickup that occupies the first position, and the Nissan Al-tima, Ford Escape, Ford Fusion and Dodge RAM, respectively occupy-ing fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh position. w

30 years of AIRBAGTo find the origins of the airbag, we have to date back to the 50’s. Later, Mercedes-Benz will be the first manu-facturer to introduce this revolution-ary invention in the car, in 1981. It was fitted inside the steering wheel and was incorporated as standard for the very first time on the S-Class and in was 1987 introduced as optional for the co-pilot. It is also important to note that Ford was the first manufac-turer to introduce the airbag through-out all its range and not only in luxury segment in 1993.

This operation is how it works (on a simple way): sensors detect if there is an impact and sends electronic infor-mation to a switchboard. It determines the force of the impact and decides, if necessary, to give the order to mech-anism to deploy, which makes the airbag to inflate. This reaction is con-ducted through a chemical explosive, which generate nitrogen gas, neces-sary for inflating the airbag.

In thirty years we have seen airbags evolving in an impressive manner: front, side, curtain airbags, knee air-bags... Front ones are fitted inside the steering wheel and the dashboard, while the rear ones are located on the backs of the driver and front passenger seats, protecting both occupants in the

event of a frontal collision. Sides are fitted in the seat lateral and curtain air-bags on the headliner to protect occu-pants hips and heads. Another type of bag that today begins to become more common is the driver’s knee airbag.

Recent innovations have come from the hand of Toyota, Ford and General Motors. The Japanese automaker in-troduced in 2008 the curtain airbag rear window, designed to be fitted in small cars and a year later, surprised again the world with its rear centre airbag, located on headliner’s rear pas-senger compartment. Its function is to prevent rear passengers heads collid-ing with each other in the event of a side accident.

In 2009, Ford showed the world seat-belts with airbags and a few months ago General Motors presented the central front airbag. The air bag is fit-ted on driver’s seat back, and it deploys when a side impact is detected, stand-ing in the front centre to prevent the heads of the driver and passengers collide.

In 2012, Volvo has become the world’s first car maker to fit a pedestrian air-bag covering half the windscreen in case of collision.

30 years after first airbag was in-stalled in a car, it is an essential el-ement of passive safety and in con-stant evolving, but with the same purpose... TO SAVE LIVES! w

Relocation of Solihull plantLast year, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) formally advised Grupo Antolin to relocate to a facility outside of the JLR main man-ufacturing site in Solihull. In just 10 weeks the management tea, lead by the plant manager, found a new location, fit-ted it out, transferred the lines and started production. The new site is located at Small Heath, within 4 miles of the old location. At its height the site had nearly 60 people from all trades working on the site.

Relocation of the Leamington Foam plant Likewise, GA-Leamington plant leased an adjacent building to its existing production site. The plan was to transfer the ware-

house function from the existing plant and to transfer the foam production from an offsite location into the new build-ing. The warehouse transfer was completed in the summer of 2011 and the foam production transferred by December. By acquiring this new facility ensures that we have sufficient room for the transfer of the Nissan lines to GA-Leamington and we have all elements of the production on one site. w

Ningbo Huaxiang visits Grupo AntolinBetween the 13 and 17 of November 2011, a delegation of peo-ple from Huaxiang and Antolin Huaxiang visited our facilities in Burgos. This visit responds to the exchange experiences and pro-cedures, and as an extra support Grupo Antolin is giving its partner in China for car interior plastic parts. They visited the engineering centre in Burgos, several manufacturing plants and the R&D engi-neering centre.

Also various forms of collaboration were studied between the plants and for the range of products that Grupo Huaxiang has in China and that match up with the diverse needs that Grupo Antolin has in its various plants around the world. No doubt this was a useful visit and will help both companies to continue growing healthily in an increasingly competitive environment, inside and outside China.

On February 29 in Gothenburg (Swe-den), Grupo Antolin participated in an important and emblematic event at Vol-vo Car Corporation (VCC) show room, together with many other interior and exterior trim suppliers with the aim to aid VCC establishing what ‘Scandinavian Luxury’ is for all future Volvo vehicles built on their first (since separating from

Ford) own designed platform named SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture) which was presented by their product manager, Anders Gustavsson.

There were an excess of 1,500 visitors from VCC from all different depart-ments (purchasing, engineering, design & styling, marketing, etc). In the show,

Grupo Antolin exposed features that we and Volvo believed would contribute to a luxurious ambience inside the vehicles habitat such as, fresh design fabrics Sa-moa® and Swan® with different types of textures and engravings (embossed or laser engraved) on headliners and door panels along with GA’s own designed and concept of lighting integration (ILM) to the headlining module, giving both the benefit of LED ambient lighting in multiple colours as well as reading spot in one single individual unit.

Grupo Antolin also takes the opportunity to expose scuff plates (metallic interior decoration) which content is growing on the automotive market, especially within VCC on coming vehicles.

And there is great news that VCC asked for further information regarding laser engraving as they envisage fantastic op-portunities for product customisation for limited editions of vehicles. w

Doors BU Quality Series Convention The 29 and 30 of November 2011 was held at Grupo Antolin Headquarters the Doors UdN Quality Series Convention. We were graced with the presence of 25 people between them were the responsible of plants quality, UdN quality and from the Corporate Industrial Office.

On the first day we presented the quality results of 2011 and the targets for 2012. Also improvements in the corporate tools of Quality Management and Knowledge Management

were reported, and finally a very interesting session of good practices transfer, related to quality, between plants.

On the second day seven topics of common interest were cho-sen to be discussed in working groups. These issues addressed aspects of quality such as quality management standard, sup-plier management during the series, the Grupo Antolin in-ter-companies relationship, PPAP process, inter-phase quality project - plant quality between Project-Series, management internal rejection and knowledge management in plants. The conclusions were put together and will form the basis of a work plan to develop in 2012. w

From 16-20 January 2012, the Corpo-rate Industrial Office (Corporate Im-provement Opperations) organised a training targeted at the Improvement Coordinators in our factories and held at the Grupo Antolin Headquarters. The aim was for the people involved in coordinating improvement issues in our companies to discover, at first hand, the methodology and tools we have been using in this area over the last five years.

The training programme was split be-tween theoretical training, in each of the Improvement initiatives (6 Sigma, Total Quality, Delta and the Grupo An-tolin Production System), and practical training. This involved visits to various Group companies leading the imple-mentation of these initiatives, such as GA-Eurotrim, GA-Ardasa and GA-Ara-gusa, where we have trained workers committed to making ongoing improve-ment a milestone for our organisation.

At the end of the sessions, the impres-sions of those participants were very positive. They highlighted the opportu-nity to find out about real cases from other factories, therefore encouraging benchmarking between our compa-nies. Also very highly valued was the effort involved in coordinating and dis-seminating the material, and we would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their co-operation. w

LAND ROVER

Land Rover has become the gateway to adventure for millions of nature enthusiasts, people looking for an off-roader capable of taking them to unexplored territories

The first Land Rover was built in 1948 and was de-signed to give Great Britain a vehicle that could com-pete with the Jeep, which had demonstrated its value during World War II. The Wilks brothers, who at that time were running the English Rover factory, had the idea to produce an off-road vehicle for the general public. For this they took advantage of the existing Jeep and designed their own vehicle from the robust Jeep chassis and a Rover engine

The original Land Rover was conceived, designed and manufactured in just one year. The vehicle was a great success at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show and its production began in 1949. It became the vehicle of choice for farmers and the Armed Forces around the world. The characteristics of the Land Rover attracted a new class of automobile enthusiasts who, moving away from its rural image, began to use it for leisure and exploration purposes.

In April 1958 Rover launched a completely new vehicle: the Series 2, which included a larger rear window, rounded head-lights and bumpers, scratch-resistant windows and doors with external handles and locks.

The orders came pouring in from many countries, and there were Land Rovers exploring the jungle in Africa and doing jobs that very few vehicles could manage. Clients from all over the world ordered versions for use as armoured cars, ambulances and even a light-weight version designed to launch parachutes. The brand had conquered the markets around the world, except for the United States, where the Jeep was still the king.

In the 1960s the company was convinced there was a mar-ket for a more luxurious 4x4 vehicle.

A study revealed that an expensive sporty off-road vehicle would not sell well, that the Americans would not pay for luxury when what they wanted was functionality. Land Rover ignored the result, and worked on a very luxurious version called the Range Rover. In 1987 it offered the United States an exclusive Rover loaded with extras never seen before on a 4x4. The risky move paid off, the Range Rover excelled at being a luxury off-road vehicle.

Land Rover took no time in exploiting the mystical adventure associated with its vehicles, running adverts demonstrating that the refined vehicles could mix with their “more rural” companions.

At the end of the decade, Rover needed another new vehi-cle. They wanted a 4x4 that combined the comforts of the Range Rover with the strength of the Land Rover: in 1989 the Discovery was born in Frankfurt. Aimed at a younger and less conservative audience, it was only available in the three door version. When it appeared in the North American market, the magazine “Four Wheeler” called it the “Off-Roader of 1995”.

In the 1990s the market for off-road vehicles expanded, with new models and brands such as the Hummer, Lexus and Cadillac, but the Range Rover continued to be the favourite with fans of the countryside, and the company started to market it as part of a lifestyle.

Rover owners were keen to quickly put their vehicles to the test and Land Rover launched the most exclusive driv-ing schools in the world, offering courses on how to drive through rough terrain. The programme trained the owners so that they could explore some of the most beautiful loca-tions on earth, submitting their skills and their vehicles to the most difficult tests.

In 1994 the company celebrated its 25th birthday with an-other model: the new Range Rover. To make this stand out, the focus was on improving the purchasing experience, doing away with the traditional dealerships and dressing the sales-people more informally: the Land Rover centres were created.

In that same year, BMW wanted to expand its range of cars and Land Rover, which had become one of the fastest grow-ing brands, needed money for new products. The result was that BMW acquired the company.

In 1996, and thanks to the capital injected by BMW, the new generation Freelander was launched. It was the first Land Rov-er without a separate chassis, and the first with the transver-sally-mounted engine. At first it was only designed for Europe, with more than 16 patented extras and aimed at a young and sporty audience, but it was finally sold around the world.

By 2000 BMW was recording daily losses as a result of pur-chasing Land Rover, and once it had launched its own off-roader, the X5, it sold the company to Ford.

In 2008 the Indian Tata Motors bought to Ford the two Brit-ish brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, from Ford.

Today, Land Rover is known around the world as the pio-neer of the 4x4. It has managed to combine luxury and util-ity, refinement and strength, and it has evolved from a utility model to become a real icon in the world of automobiles. The prestigious brand is the pioneer of many current tech-nologies: increased control and safety of four wheel drive, solid mechanisms for keeping the car moving in the desired direction, etc. w
