Beyond The Classroom - Experiential Learning!

UDC SBPA students attended an event about the “Future of Work” sponsored by OECD, Global Shapers, IMF, and World Bank (Faculty Advisor: Dr. Malva Reid)

The event was held on February 6 that was a focus group, with college students from the DC area giving their thoughts on the ‘Future of Work’. The purpose of this was to gather ideas that will drive the agenda and content created for our ‘Future of Work’ summit in early April. The day involved sessions and workshops at the OECD office downtown, as well as a tour and further discussion at the IMF and World Bank. DC students discuss what they would want to see at a summit that will center around skills, technology, entrepreneurship, and education.

Trips to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing and Federal Reserve

During the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing visit, UDC-SBPA

students walked along corridors overlooking different sections of the

engraving and printing operations. They saw various stages of the

operation from various views. The tour guide was energetic, and the

employees were humorous, which made it fun. From this trip, the students

learned several ways to detect counterfeiting, which was very interesting.

Overall, it was fascinating to watch money being made. The UDC-SBPA

students expressed excitement during the trip.

On the first Friday morning of November 2018, students gathered around

the main entrance to the Visitor Center of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC, waiting to clear

security as they prepared to tour ithe historic facility (built in 1936-37). It was surprising to see that the bank is

more secure than the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The tour began

with an introduction to the history of the building (and history of the

Federal Reserve). The group was fascinated by how majestic it felt

inside the building. Two stops warrant special mentions: The first was a

mini-library that the Board of Governors used in the past during their

breaks from the meetings. The tour concluded in the second room, a

boardroom where the current Board of Governor meetings are held.

A video was shown to introduce the Federal Reserve System (including

the twelve Federal Reserve Banks) and its functions. The visit ended

with each student receiving a parting gift: a pack of shredded currency

worth approximately $364. Through these trips, information is presented

to students in a way that meets different learning modalities, and perhaps triggers interests that traditional

methods do not. These trips expose students to new experiences that broaden their horizons and future

perspectives.

For Business Finance (FINA314) classes, Dr. Alex Tan and Dr. Viet Nguyen believe these trips provide

students with opportunities to learn through experience.

To provide students with a different perspective about learning, Alex Tan (Associate Professor of Finance) has been able to offer them an opportunity to embark on an experiential journey for the past two years. This year was no exception! Destination – Chicago, Illinois, aka the “Windy City”.

The trip was scheduled for 1.5 days, arriving on a Thursday morning and departing Friday evening. Because of the early arrival, bags were store at the hotel before heading out. First stop – Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (FRBC). A host screened a 10-minute video about the Federal Reserve System and FRBC before introducing FRBC, its functions, and its service areas (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin). After that,

students were ushered into the Money Museum, and learn about the history of US currency, currency counterfeiting, etc. The museum also contains an in-ground clear panel with fifty to sixty thousand dollars worth of coins, and a rotating glass cube with one million dollars. Here, too, each visitor left the premises with a souvenir – a pack of shredded currency worth about $364.

Late afternoon, as the workday was coming to an end, the building was packed with people. Hosted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, an event invited prominent leaders from the corporate world, politicians, and academicians to discuss emerging issues from the global landscape. On last year’s trip, participants had the privilege to meet Robert Kaplan (President – Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas), and the year prior, Lord Mervyn King (Former Governor – Bank of England) was the keynote speaker. This year’s title was, “The AI Intelligence Arms Race,” presented by Amy Webb (Founder of Future Today Institute, and a Professor at NYU Business School).

The next event, early Friday morning, was at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). An instructor from the Options Institute greeted the group and led them into a secure area. Each participant received a personalized souvenir trading badge. That functioned as their identification to get in an out of the building. Students were introduced to the world of financial options, through a short series of lectures and workshops. Part of this experience is being able to get down to the “pit,” where about 60 traders gathered to trade options. The day at the CBOE ended with participants pitted against one another in an options trading strategy game.

Then it was time for the world-famous Chicago deep dish pizza! Most people can only finish a single slice. Only a handful were able to gobble down more.

After a short rest, students proceeded to the last stop of this field trip – Charles Schwab. The Director of Online Education spent an hour or so with the group. She provided insights about the financial services industry, shared her experiences about career choices, described career opportunities at Charles Schwab, and provided information about the Financial Consultant Academy program there.

Everyone was reluctant to leave Chicago after two days of “fun,” but all good things must come to an end. Everyone learned a great deal from this experience and hoped that more of these trips will be organized in the future!

Going Global– Collaborations with Chinese Universities

Since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and Wuchang University of Technology (WUT) in August 2017, the School of Business and Public Administration (SBPA) has been on the forefront of UDC’s globalization efforts. At the invitation of WUT, Dean Mohamad Sepehri and Professor Alex Tan traveled across the Pacific Ocean to Wuhan, where they met with university, college, and school leadership teams. They were taken around campus, introduced to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, and shown the university’s history and achievements. In addition, Professor Tan made a

presentation to introduce UDC and its programs to WUT students. After that, they were pampered to a sumptuous lunch at a nearby restaurant owned by the university. WUT’s hospitality did not end there. After lunch, both were invited to visit one of the group’s resorts, the DaHong Mountain resort, for a brief stay. The fresh air, the scenery, wow! And, the views were breathtaking! They were informed that hospitality students have an opportunity to intern at any one of the resorts owned by the group, and may be offered a full-time job upon graduation. During their stay in Wuhan, they also visited Wuhan Huaxia University of Technology (HXUT). In the summer of 2018, Professor Tan revisited both institutions to reinforce bilateral ties. On two of the evenings in June, he held information sessions for potential, interested students, and introduced UDC to audiences on both campuses. During his visit, the MOU between UDC and HXUT was finalized and signed electronically. While in China, Professor Tan also traveled to Beijing to visit Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT), one of the Chinese members of the HBCU-China Scholarship Network. He met with the Vice Director of Cooperation and Student Recruitment to discuss the possibilities and details of potentially having UDC students study abroad at BUCT for a semester or year, starting as soon as March 2020. In November 2018, both universities signed an MOU to signify both parties’ commitment to collaborate, and in January 2019, a student exchange agreement was signed. Pending approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education (expected April/May 2019), UDC students can study up to one academic year at BUCT at minimal costs to the students. In January 2019, at the invitation of three universities in Hunan province, Professor Tan was selected to go on an unprecedented trip. In addition to visiting the three universities, Professor Tan made plans to visit Wuhan and Beijing as well. After the first stop, Wuhan, where he strengthened relationships and networks, he paid an initial visit to Wuhan Donghu University (WDHU) to discuss possible collaborations with UDC. WDHU

expressed interest in pursuing further interaction with UDC. Talks are currently underway for future development and a visit and meeting have been scheduled for June 2019. Professor Tan also helped spread the word around the WUT campus by conducting a seminar workshop for the Business School junior faculty, as well as information sessions about UDC, “3+2” program, and 2019 UDC SBPA summer camp for students. His next stop was Changsha, the capital city of Hunan province. He traveled an hour from Changsha to Hengyang, where Hunan Institute of Technology (HNIT) is located. The Director of International Affairs and the Dean of the Business School met with Professor Tan. In the two-hour meeting, they discussed student exchanges, faculty exchanges,

faculty collaboration, and study tours. After the meeting, he was brought to the train station for his ride back to Changsha. The following morning, he was greeted very warmly by Hunan Agricultural University (HNAU).

Into the Future: SBPA Integrating Design Thinking and Innovation

Innovation helps students leverage marketing concepts and research to better influence the outcomes of new products and innovations. The SBPA courses utilizing design thinking as a part of their curricula are decision theory, operations and supply chain management, international business marketing, leadership, introduction to management, introduction to marketing, multinational corporate management, advertising management, marketing strategy, and public policy (with an ethical focus). Students learn how to evaluate market attractiveness, evaluate existing products, think about new product design through the design thinking

process for new product development (NPD), manage distribution channels, and understand market innovations through design and utility patents. Have you ever wondered how every day products are made? Product designers create, design, and manufacture an array of consumer goods and household items. These designs require a human-centered mindset--empathizing with the user, defining the problem, ideating, concept sketching, prototyping, and manufacturing at scale. While all stages of new product development are crucial, the most important (and often, neglected) stage of market/product innovation is DESIGN. These business and public administration courses will help students learn the skills they need to get started as market and product designers. The course series introduces students to Autodesk Fusion 360, a cloud-based CAD/CAM tool product marketers and designers use to design, engineer, and manufacture new products. Faculty Advisors: Dr. Amit Arora, Dr. Sylvia Benatti, Dr. Anshu Arora, Dr. Nazha Gali, and Dr. Donovan Collier

Hosted by its Vice President and attended by various deans, the meeting was very productive. Almost every aspect was touched upon. They even invited UDC faculty members to conduct seminars and/or teach courses during the summer months. In addition, HNAU showed a keen interest in calling on UDC when they visit the United States in September 2019. On his final day in Changsha, Professor Tan visited the campus of Changsha University of Science & Technology (CSUST), where he was greeted by the Director of International Affairs. During the short meeting, they discussed graduate student exchanges and faculty exchanges. The following day, he traveled five hours by high-speed rail to Beijing for his final stop in China. Professor Tan met with representatives from China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU). They were very interested in sending graduates from their program to pursue MBA and MPA degrees at UDC. Details on this collaboration are currently being ironed out. To follow up on his prior visit to BUCT, Professor Tan met with the deans of International College, Business School and Computer Science. Topics discussed included faculty exchanges, faculty collaborations, student exchanges, and study tours. BUCT welcomed UDC faculty members to conduct seminars in Summer 2019 and/or teach courses in Summer 2020. They also invited UDC to actively participate in an upcoming STEM Summer Camp (to be held in July 2019) hosted by them. After meeting seven universities in seven days, Professor Tan hopped onto his flight back to Washington, DC. This is just the beginning for UDC. No doubt there will be more opportunities for internationalization coming our way!
