Notes From the Managing DirectorNEW HOURS FOR WEDNESDAY SKETCH CLASSES:

The Wednesday sketch class is now rescheduled in hopes ofattracting more people. Lately the attendance has fallen offto two or three people, and this hardly warrants the time andexpense involved in setting up the class. New hours are 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. We extend an invitation to all Scarabs: Come in andpaint.

We (and everyone else in this area) are desperate for goodfemale models. V/inter seems to deplete the supply, and our ownlow hourly rate does not make it a get-rich-quick job. If youknow of anyone who is interested in modeling, please have themcall the club.

Lockers are available for your convenience should you careto store your sketch class supplies. The cost is a very modest$3.00 per year.

Some of the members have not yet paid the locker fee for1980, and the club would appreciate a check immediately. Ifyou are no longer interested in maintaining your former locker, please let the club management know so that we can assign thespace to someone else. If you have a key to an unused locker, please return it to the office

Maniscalco Seminar at C.C.S.Joe Maniscalco has been presiding over a portrait semi-

WORDS FROM A LEGENDPablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paule Juan Nepomuceno Crispin

de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz PICASSO. He averaged over twopieces of art every day during his productive years, creating agrand total of $0,000 paintings and drawings.

Picasso said "Painting is stronger than I am", and "Paintingmakes me do what it wants".

He made Gertrude Stein sit more than eighty times for herportrait, and then wiped out the face and substituted a mask-likecountenance. When criticized, he said "Everybody thinks that theportrait is not like her, but never mind, in the end she will looklike the portrait".

DEADLINE FOR NEXT BUZZ ISSUE IS MAY 15. Editor Fred Moorehouse

Membership Contest ResultsLast September our Membership Committee Chairman, Ted

Zberanowsky notified all Scarabs of a membership drive (withprizes, by golly). Scarabs recruiting the most applicantswould win medallions, and the top recruiter would receive aone year paid-up dues receipt.

We had a tie, with Bill Dickens and George Howell bring-ing in the same number of members. They have agreed to splitthe prize, and both will be freebies for six months.

Scarab Medallions will be given to Mike Caudle, AlexMarines, Rod Jacobs and Don Huegerich. Alex designed theMedallion, and probably has a drawer full of them....maybehe'd settle for a beer?

Club Building a Historic Site (U.S.)The Scarab Club received the following letter:

Dear Sir:

It is my pleasure to join with the State Historic Preser-vation Review Board in informing you that the Scarab Club ofDetroit has recently been entered in the National Registerof Historic Places. The Scarab Club was nominated for list-ing in the National Register because the Michigan HistoryDivision of the Department of State and the State HistoricPreservation Review Board believed it to be a site of out-standing historical and architectural significance. It wasformally accepted for registration by the Heritage Conserva-tion and Recreation Service, Department of the Interior, onNovember 20, 1979.

SCARABS WORKING TOGETHERPast President Jim Taliana, Art Director at D'Arcy-Mac-

Manus & Masius Ad Agency worked on four layouts for the GeneralTire account recently, combining a lion with furniture coveredwith a leather-like vinyl. He needed a photographer who wasn'tafraid of lions, alive or dead, and the luckyl?) winner was ourown Chuck Schridde.

Schridde, a long-term Scarab, got the job done right, and,at last report, was still alive. If you have a dangerous photoassignment, call Chuck Schridde, and let the BUZZ editor knowhow it turns out.

CANCEL THREE DAYS AHEAD!!Recent club parties and dances have attracted a goodly

number of nno shows" among the members who made reservationsfor the event. The committee in charge of the event mustpay for the dinners, whether they're eaten or not, and insome cases that puts the party in the RED!

A reservation is a commitment to either attend or tocancel in time to change the orders to the caterer. Pleasesee to it that you follow normal rules of etiquette, andsave the club an unnecessary expense.

From now on the "no shows" will be billed for the mealsthey left untouched.

8105 Profit! Our recent Gold Medal Show didn't lose money for the

first time in anyone's memory! The same goes for the NoelNight, although that evening only netted the club 810.

At least we're on the right road according to RichardVernick, club Treasurer.

#Fran Plagens was one of the local talents accepted in the Mich-igan Annual VIII exhibit at the Art Center in Mt. Clemens.

* Patricia Sullivan's photos accompanied an article on round barnsin the Spring issue of Country Roads, the Goodyear Tire and Rub-ber magazine. She even found an octagonal one in her quest forthe unusual in barn construction.

*Jose Romero reports that his name will be listed in several newpublications related to honoring persons engaged in communityservice. One of the editions is printed in Cambridge, England.

#Steve Veresh found an interesting account of the daily life ofthe scarab beetle in the November '79 issue of Scientific Amer-ican. A brief translation of all the technical facts revealsa not-too-bright bug. Hope there isn't any connection to ourclub members!

#Richard Vernick reports a busy schedule with his Musical PhotoPainting Shows. He was at Wayne State on March 1, and in Livoniaat the Performing Arts Showcase on March 9« In addition to hisScarab Club appearance on March 22, Richard will be the guestsoloist with the Rochester Symphony on April 11.

*Pat Burnett and Joe Maniscalco have been getting a lot of spacein the Free Press in the last month. Most of it has been abouttheir views concerning the drafting of women, instead of art...I suppose the next thing will be a column on what soldiers thinkof watercolor as a medium.

Jim Marines A FutureAlex and Sylvia Marines are proud, and rightly so, of

their son Jim, a member of the rising young rock group, TheRomantics. This fine combo played the Detroit area duringMarch, and it was standing room only at each session.

The Romantics are listed on the National Hits Chart, and have recently signed a contract with one of the majorrecording companys. Alex hopes that Jim remembers his Momand Dad when he gets rich and famous.

Fair Warning, Artists! If you have any art works at the club that were hung in

a recent exhibition, you can do yourself and the Managing Dir-ector a favor by picking them up....pronto! The office lookslike the storeroom at the D.I.A., and it's too tiny to holdeveryone's forgotten paintings.

Just like a laundry or a dry cleaner's shop, goods leftover 30 days will be discarded.

HELP, HELP, HELPCalling persons interested in.drawing or lettering one of

the many flyers required for our club functions! If you'd liketo turn out a mailer, phone president Marines at 882-018? (home),or 575-2440 (office).

A Day For The Irish! The annual St. Patrick's Day luncheon was a rousing suc-

cess, as usual. The standard Scarab menu of corned beef andcabbage was augmented by green bagels (why?), and green icecream. The meal was excellent, the wine was flowing, and allthe attending Scarabs felt super-Irish for one day. •

Joe Maniscalco wore both green and orange, in an effortto not offend either side of the age-old feud. Joe promisedto do one of his famous operas in Gaelic, but never got aroundto it.

Anne Franz wanted some green beer to make the day complete, but a search of the club turned up not a drop. Wait 'til nextyear, Anne...we guarantee an ample supply of the froth.

Margaret Wilson wore a bright green scarf, and claimed tohave a touch of Kelly in her lineage somewhere. Daughter Bettysaid her mother wouldn't lie, so we must accept the story. AnIrishperson is sworn to tell the truth, or at least as closeto the truth as necessary at the time.

Karl Larsen did some delightful character studies of theguests. The BUZZ editor was caught by Karl's pen, and thedrawing was brought home for matting and framing.

Pat Bramley wore an Irish-neon green dress that she muststore in a dark place. She tried to tell me a little of itshistory, but I didn't have sunglasses, and couldn't stay forthe entire story.

Alex Marines wore a green tie and green trousers, but hewas still Alex, for some reason.

Delphine Iwankowski sported a green blouse while husbandJerry came in his idea of an Irish disguise. It didn't work,Jerry....We still recognized you.

Jan Bojanowski had a muted green tweed jacket and freeritie as his concession to the Irish Scarabs.

Bill Bostick wore green jacket, shirt, tie, socks, andunderwear, or so he claimed. The visible items were checkedand found to be as claimed, so we suppose the rest were. IsBostick an Irish name? Did it start out as 0'Bostick yearsago?

Bob VanderKloot wes neatly dressed for a Director's get-together, as usual. He is evidently waiting for a day cele-brating the SANE people in the world. Bob gave us a copy ofone of his better poems which will appear in the next issue ofthe BUZZ.

All in all, the luncheon was a great success. A not-so-good rendition of "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" was sung bythe non-Irish to the handful of genuine 01' Sod type guests.I thought we sang like angels, but Dick Beeman looked like hehas heard better, even in Ireland.

Pearl and Vernon took care of everyone, Irish or not, inspite of the unexpected number of guests. Many thenks for amost delightful afternoon!
