Peter took the exam to experience the same stress and

Student Examination Success The following students are to be congratulated on gaining 9 or more GCSEs or equivalent qualifications at Grades A* - C.

Reports Online

After consultation with staff, students and parents we have moved from one yearly report to three

interim reports (one each term). This enables a much better system for monitoring individual

pupils’ progress. The College has now further developed a system to enable parents to view

reports online. If you would like to take advantage of this system you will need to supply the

College with your email address.

Not only will you benefit from being able to view reports online but you will also become part of

School Comms. School Comms will send out emails containing details of College events, exam

information, results and other important information. School Comms can also use text services

for less frequent key information. For example, school closure due to bad weather etc.

Parent Pay

We would like to remind all our parents/carers to use Parent Pay to pay for school meals. This can considerably cut down

queuing time for pupils. If you need a reminder of your log in details let reception know and they will pass the message

on to the Finance team.

Internet Safety

The increasing availability of social networking sites such as Bebo, Facebook and

Chat Roulette gives us major cause for concern regarding the safety of our young

people.

Pupils receive lessons on E Safety but many of these activities take place away

from the school premises and so we enclose a letter from our ICT Faculty which

we would urge you to read, share and discuss with your son/daughter. We are

advised by the police that young people are only 4 clicks away from a predatory

sex offender.

Open Evening and Open Afternoon for Prospective

New Pupils and their Parents

Our Open Evening will be held on Thursday 30th September at 7pm and the Open Afternoon on Friday 1st October at

2pm. Both will be held at our Waterleat Road Site.

Both College sites will close early on the 30th September at 2.00 pm in readiness for Open Evening.

The 6th Form Open Evening will be held on Thursday 2nd December at 7pm at our Borough Road Site.

Attendance

I am pleased to report the College’s attendance during the 2009/10 academic year was 91.94%; this was a 1% increase

on the 2008/09 figure. Attendance is a high priority on our agenda in the College and our target for this current

academic year is 93%.

Parents have a legal responsibility for sending their son/daughter to school and the Government expects pupils to

have an attendance of 93% or above. The College works hard to support parents who have difficulties with their son/

daughter’s attendance and we are always happy to help should you require it.

The College does have an incentive scheme for students with good attendance; all students with attendance of 94% or

above will be entered into a prize draw every term. These prizes can include trips to England and Premiership

football matches, beauty treatments, gift vouchers, rugby trips and much, much more. Attendance rewards trips are

also available to students who have good attendance and behaviour with trips already organised to see Diversity Street

Dance and Manchester City v. Manchester United.

Uniform

The Uniform Shop is open on Mondays 8.00 - 8.30 a.m., Wednesday 3.00 - 3.30 p.m. and Fridays 8.00 - 8.30 p.m.

There is also the facility to place orders and pay for uniform on line by visiting our website -

www.paigntoncommunitycollege.com, and clicking on the Uniform Shop Link. Please leave approximately 48 hours

beween placing your order on line and collection from the shop at one of the normal shop opening times.

All items of uniform are in stock and students will be reminded of the governors' policy on school uniform.

Friday 12th November is 11 Million Takeover Day and secondary/6th Form students from across the Force area are

invited to apply to join their local policing team for the day, so they can find out all about what it takes to police Devon

and Cornwall.

There will be a selection process, to ensure fairness, but places will be very limited so there will

be an element of competition. We hope schools will encourage students to apply, perhaps

using the opportunity as an exercise in how to complete a job application.

Application forms must be completed and returned to the named single point of contact by no

later than Friday 8th October 2010.

Applicants will be notified whether or not they have been successful by no later than Friday

22nd October.

Join your local Police Team for the Day

A Free Book for Every Year 7 Pupil

Booked Up is run by Booktrust, an independent charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages

and cultures to engage with books. Booked Up is generously supported by children's book publishers

and part-funded by the Department for Education (DfE).

Booked Up’s aim is to encourage and support reading for pleasure by providing each Year 7 pupil

with a free book. There are 12 books to choose from including a factual book, a book of short stories

and a poetry book as well as fiction books.

The scheme is co-ordinated by our librarian at Waterleat Road. The pupils will have made their

choice by the end of September when the books will be ordered. They should arrive in school by

early December so all Year 7 pupils will have their book by Christmas.

Arts Award

Mrs S Dale, Head of Creative and Expressive Arts Faculty, successfully trained to become an Arts Award Advisor for

Trinity Guildhall College making Paignton Community & Sports College a nationally recognised Arts Award Centre. Arts

Award is a Trinity Guildhall qualification at three levels. The College piloted the Bronze Award last year with Gifted and

Talented students from Year 9 Drama. In July 2010, 16 Year 9 students were entered for the Bronze Arts Award and all

passed prior to commencing Year 10. For the academic Year 2010/11 the Bronze level award will be offered to all Year 9

students studying Performing Arts as an entry level qualification to prepare them for BTECs in Acting, Art, Music and

Dance in Year 10.


Tic Tac—Teenage Information Centre, Teenage Advice Centre is the College’s on site health centre. It was set up in

February 1998 with a view to helping and supporting college pupils. The College is very aware that if it is to get the best

from its young people then they must be free from worry and anxiety and Tic Tac plays a key role in this area.

There is a Tic Tac centre on both of the College sites and they are open to pupils at lunchtime. Each site has a very

experienced coordinator who oversees the running of the centre and coordinates the many health professionals who

come to the centre to see our pupils.

Tic Tac covers a vast array of health issues but also deals with other concerns such as self esteem, friendship issues etc.

The centre has strict operating policies whilst at the same time being confidential and non judgmental. Young people

are always encouraged to discuss issues at home with parents and carers.

The two coordinators, Marie and Sarah, are always pleased to answer any questions that parents may have about the

service and are often able to signpost parents to other helpful services within Torbay.

6th Form Raising Money for Breast Cancer

The 6th form will be aiming to raise money at their annual charity event in aid of Breast Cancer.

Events will take place on Friday 12th November. Events to include cake sale, dressing in pink for the

day and leg waxing for any of our young men who think they are man enough !!!

We are now collecting the Morrisons Let’s Grow

vouchers. We hope to collect more than ever this year!

Please hand them in to the Reception or Library on both

sites.

The College is a flagship school in partnership with Collaton St Mary

Primary School for Food For Life. The idea of the project is to encourage

pupils to grow their own food and eat healthily. The College has several

food growing areas including an allotment. If there are any budding

gardeners who would like to volunteer on a regular basis to help with the

growing projects in the College could you please contact Mr Mark Smith

Food Bus

Paignton Community & Sports College, as a Flagship College, is looking forward to the visit of the Food Bus which will be

situated at Morrisons. The Food Bus has 16 cooking sessions, develops community and school links and is here from 2nd

to 4th November.

Sports News

Sports Hub

I am sure many of you have watched with interest as the Sports Hub has

taken shape on our Waterleat Road site.

It has certainly created more interest and comments than any of our

other building projects.

The Hub is financed mainly by a grant from Sport England following our

application for additional funding. It was one of only eight successful

applications in England. The Hub will contain the following sports

facilities:-

Netball

Basketball

Tennis Courts

It will be a fantastic sporting facility not only for the College but also for

the local community.

It is expected to be in use as of the 1st November 2010.

Newcastle United Star from

PCSC!

Ex Paignton Community and Sports College student Mike

Williamson is pictured playing for Newcastle United in the

Premiership recently against Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

Mike also played for the Torbay and District Schools FA in 1998

and is pictured with the Team . Our Director of Sport/ Assistant

Principal, Jason Trevarthen (Manager), looking slightly younger is

also pictured back left.

Mike is planning to return to the College in the near future to

visit some of our young football players of the future and talk

about life in and on the way to the Premiership!

PE Kit Request

If anyone has any old PE kit, trainers or football boots, please don't throw them out.

We would like to collect as much as possible to be used for pupils in the College who, for various

reasons, are unable to provide their own kit. This will ensure that no one misses out! Thank you.

The Torbay Summer Sports Programme ran from 26th July - 27th August

2010 for children aged 4-17 years. In total 792 different children attended

a range of 55 different sporting activities. These included surfing,

coasteering, gorge walking, rock climbing, mountain climbing,

trampolining, gymnastics, fencing, fitness suite, motorcross, mega

inflatables, diddy cars, scuba diving, snorkelling, golf, tennis, bowls,

football, putting, hi-flyer, kite making, mini orienteering, dance,

cheerleading, wall climbing, street dance, water polo, orienteering at

Cockington Country Park, archery, fishing, crabbing, bushcraft, horse

riding, high ropes, raft building, kayaking, woodland survival, open

canoeing, rock journey, abseiling and accredited courses rookie lifeguard

bronze, silver and gold, bronze medallion, FA Level 1 course, Red Cross

first aid, Introduction to kayaking paddle power start, Arsenal Soccer

School, Matt Dawson Rugby Academy, Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy, Sailing Level 1 and 2 and other FA courses.

Activities ran across Torbay and Devon with most specifically in Paignton,

Brixham and Torquay making all sports easily accessible for all in Torbay.

Transport was provided for many activities in the areas.

Children attended from schools across Torbay and Devon and accessed the

programme through 'My Time' and 'Don't Stop Me Now'. Many groups and

individuals attended through Adventure Play in the Bay.

The Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy had Luke Sutton, current Derbyshire

player visit Paignton Cricket Club for a session in the nets with all the

participants,. He also undertook a question and answer session and then signed

players bats, t-shirts and caps.

Other new activities included snorkelling at Shoalstone swimming pool in Brixham and a multi activity day at Torre Abbey

which included a session of bowls, tennis, pitch and putt, football and an optional ride on the hi-flyer balloon.

The October programme will be running from Monday 25th October - Friday 29th October.

Enrichment Week Sports Tour Football

Football Sports Tour 2010 was a huge success with

visits to the Goals football centre , Queen Elizabeth

School, St Luke’s Sports College, the University St

Mark and St John and our partner school, City

Academy Bristol. The boys enjoyed a variety of

matches, competitions, swimming and shopping. At St

Mark and St John the boys played in the new indoor

centre and looked at future careers, many having

ambitions to go onto University.

The highlight of the week was our partner visit to City

Academy Bristol where students had the opportunity to

integrate with students from a different part of the country.

Next year we hope the Tour will be able to include an

overnight stay – we are already looking forward to

Enrichment Week 2011.

Sports Day 2010

We were once again treated to a fabulous array of athletic talent in our annual Sports Day. For the second year running

the weather held and we were able to run the day at first attempt in glorious sunshine. The House system remains

extremely competitive and for the second year running Bannister house was celebrating the Sports Day Gold medal

position. It was great to see MacArthur House who were fourth last year move into silver medal position and Botham

remain strong in overall Bronze medal position.

As we now hold Sports Day at Borough Road we are adding further non

traditional events that could be facilitated at Borough Road, the Vortex and

Standing Long jump being two such events.

This year also saw a link with literacy and winning commentators

from each English group took on the commentating microphone

during the morning session. The afternoon sprint finals saw us

nominate the best commentators to battle it out to commentate to

the whole school on each race.

The all time Sports Day records have been standing for thirty five years and this year numerous new records were set in

the new events. The real delight was seeing five of the all time Sports Day records broken. This is the highest number of

overall records that have been broken in any year and it is a clear indication of the success of those Athletes. Josh Jewsey

in Yr 7 and Harvey Sears in Year 8 both broke the boys’ 200m record, Aaron Phillips and Charlotte Stewart both broke the

Yr 8 shot putt records and Jenny Northcott smashed the Girls’ Yr 10 300m record.

The Victrix Ludorum goes to the female athlete with the best

performance on the day and we were delighted that after winning the

Yr 10 Girls’100m and 200m Shauna English won this award. The

Victor Ludorum for the best male athlete was awarded to Aaron

Coombes of Year 9 who won the 100m and the Shot putt event.

Olympics 2012

Looking forward to the Olympics in 2012 Paignton Community and Sports College have taken on the Olym-

pic and Para Olympic values. Students will focus on the values highlighted below. An application has been

made as a result of this work and the College hope to be able to display the Olympic Logo on our headed

paper.

6th Form News

6th Form Results

6th Form results this year were excellent. The point score per student and per entry has risen

quite significantly since 2006 and this clearly demonstrates the commitment and hard work that

has gone in to raising standards. The 6th Form team are delighted by the fact that many of these

students have reached their full potential and have now gone on to university, at a time when so many other institutions have

struggled to place their students in the current economic climate. The average grade achieved in the 6th Form last year was a

grade C which is now comparable to many of the grammar schools in the Bay.

The Average Points Score per Student was 631 (representing a 38% increase since 2006). The Average Points Score per

Entry was 212 (A 16% increase since 2006).

Open Evening

We are holding our annual 6th Form Information Evening on Thursday 2nd December at 7.00pm. We have organised a full

programme that we hope will enable you and your son/daughter to make an informed choice about their 6th Form career.

There will be a large number of departments for you to visit. Staff in their departments will be available to give you and your

son/daughter a taste of what to expect in the 6th Form at Paignton Community & Sports College.

UCAS Applications 2011

The process for making an application for university entry 2011 has now commenced.

The most important start to a student’s application is researching the courses, making realistic choices, and producing a

personal statement. In preparation, we are holding a Personal Statement session, led by Plymouth University, on Friday

September 24th during period 2 (9.40am) in the Common Room.

Personal Development Activity

As part of the 6th Form Enrichment Programme, we are organising a visit by the Armed Forces to deliver a Personal Development Activity Event. This event will be held on Monday 4th October from 9.30am-12.30pm on the Borough Road site. Students will attend their timetabled classes in the afternoon. Further details will follow including the relevant parental permission form.

Gap Year Presentation The Project Trust is an educational charity which specialises in 17—19 year old school leavers who may wish to go overseas for 8 or 12 months on a volunteer placement. If you are interested please come along to the presentation on Wednesday 29th September 2—3pm, parents are also welcome.

University Success!

Congratulations to ex Paignton Community & Sports College pupil Matthew Lord who has graduated from university with a 1st in Computer Systems and Networking. I would like to congratulate two other ex pupils, Hannah Moncad and Neil Maidment who have also gone on to amazing things since leaving the College. Both studied at the University of Wales, Hannah was awarded a BSc in Psychology and Neil a B.A. In Media Studies. Neil has now secured a position as a journalist working on the Sports Desk for Thomson Reuters in London, he has covered many sporting events including World Cup in Africa! Hannah has recently been given one of only 11 places to complete a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Nuffield Bursary Scheme for Year 12 Students

The Nuffield Schools and Colleges Bursaries offer bursaries to first year Advanced/Higher post-16 students, helping

students to take part in projects in universities, industry, or research institutions during the summer holidays.

Successful students will take up a placement during next summer for between 4-6 weeks and will be paid £80 per week.

Students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics area can apply. There is a contribution to travel costs

if a student takes up a placement away from home.

In addition, alongside the placement, students can complete the Gold Crest project, a nationally recognised award. For

Paignton Community & Sports College were fortunate to take two Year 10 teams and a Year 12/13 team to the Army Schools Challenge 2010 which took place at HMS Raleigh, Torpoint, Cornwall. Over 3 days 40 Teams of 10 students, took part in seven tasks to test their teamwork, communication and physical fitness skills. Tasks included an assault course, erecting a camouflage net, paintball shooting, problem solving and command tasks. The day concluded with a tug-of-war competition. Students were led and supervised by army instructors and had input throughout the day from the army careers personnel who answered questions regarding army life, standards and opportunities. The Year 10 students took a little while to warm up but came strong on the command task, whilst the Year 12/13 Public Services students also worked incredibly well together and performed particularly well in the ‘buggy race’ task. All members of the Teams showed great commitment and team work.

Well done to all the students that took part.

In late June a Selection of Year 9 students (current year 10s) took part in a Raising Aspirations event hosted by the

University of Plymouth.

The event was aimed at encouraging pupils to work hard and achieve good grades so that they can continue their

education in the future by attending University. Students participated in a hands on ‘design your own course’ workshop

which concluded in formal presentations. Academics and Student Ambassadors of the University gave a short

presentation on university life and what to expect. Students were also given the opportunity to explore the University

Campus and see its various facilities.

Sim Venture

Paignton Community and Sports College is a partner of the Aimhigher Peninsula Programme which was able to offer

30 Year 10 students the chance to visit a higher education institution, meet higher education students and find out

more about studying business, marketing and maths at a higher level. The day involved a fun, interactive learning

session relating to creating a business, marketing the business and then gaining profit through sales. The online

resource was challenging and informative making students think about their future plans- perhaps a few

entrepreneurs?

During the past few months two groups of students attended the Health Tec centre based in

Plymouth. HealthTec South West is an innovative health and social care resource and education

centre providing simulated environments for the delivery of interactive education and training.

HealthTec South West is a partnership between Health and Education ensuring relevant work-related training for young learners studying the science and health and social care curriculum. The Centre also provides meaningful continuing professional development opportunities for health and education professionals.

The Students gained great knowledge and insight into a variety of careers relating to Health and Social Work. The activities covered aspects of adult nursing, physiotherapy, mental health nursing, para-medicine, dietetics, child health and midwifery. During June a group of Year 9 students (now year 10) attended a residential at Plymouth

University. The group of 20 students participated in 2 days of activities and information

sessions based on university life, media studies, sports and music. The students were able to

use the universities interactive i-lab, fitness suites, photography and recording resources.

After completing their first day of activities, students really got to experience what university

life is like by staying on campus in the halls of residence followed by an evening of music

mayhem at the Music Zone, a facility that allows groups of students to create their own music

tracks and record them in a state of the art recording studio.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the event and have all said that they intend to work as hard as

they can so that they will be able to attend university in the future.

Mrs Colliver is the resident First Aider; the School Nurse is not school based and only comes in when she has

appointments. Please be aware that the school does not provide pain relief/medication. Parents should supply this for

their son/daughter with a completed consent slip (green form).

Prescribed Medication:

The pupil’s medication should be provided in its original container and box with the Pharmacist’s label showing the

pupil’s name and dosage. The school cannot accept medicines that have been removed from their original container nor

make changes to dosage on parents’ instructions (this has to be changed by the pharmacist/doctor to be able to produce

a new label for the box/medicine).

Non Prescribed Medication:

Paracetamol (soluble or tablet) is the only painkiller accepted at school for pupils to bring in. These should not be used

for more than 3 days continuously. Please note Ibuprofen and Aspirin (whether tablet/liquid form) are not acceptable

unless prescribed.

All medicines handed into school should be accompanied by the fully completed ‘green form’ showing: name of school,

name of pupil, address, medical condition, name of prescribing doctor, medicine, dose, frequency of dose and parent/

guardian signature with date.

N.B. It is essential that all medication is handed into reception as soon as the pupil arrives at school. Pupils are not

permitted to carry any form of medication around school.

If unwell, pupils should follow school procedures in which they must be seen by either their Head of Year or the First

Aider who will make contact with parents and, if deemed necessary, arrange for them to go home. It is helpful for pupils

that do need medication if parents have a chat with the College’s First Aider, Mrs Colliver, on 403661 or with the Head of

Year.

First Aid

Over the Academic Year there has been a marked increase in the number of students

with facial or body piercings. The Governors have a clear policy regarding this

matter stating that only one stud or sleeper earring in each ear is permitted. All other

facial or body piercings should be removed during the school day (plastic retainers

are not permitted as an alternative). The Governors took this decision on the

grounds of health and safety sometime ago and, as a result, the school policy with

regard to piercing is regularly publicised throughout the school year. If your son/

daughter is thinking of having a piercing, then I would ask you to think very carefully

about the timing of such a procedure as there is usually a time span, immediately

after the event, when the piercing can not be removed. The College will not be able

to make any allowances during this time. Should you wish to discuss this matter

further please do not hesitate to contact the appropriate Key Stage Manager or Head

of Year.

Make-up should be discreet, avoiding high fashion styles. Extreme hair colour and

styles are not acceptable. Pupils displaying these styles will be educated out of

normal lessons. Coloured nail varnish should not be worn.

Parking at the College Sites

There have been several occasions recently when parents who are collecting their children, have driven into the College

car park narrowly missing pupils exiting school. We therefore would like to request that you do not bring your vehicle

into the College premises between the times of 2.50pm and 3.15pm; thank you for your co-operation.
