The BuzZ at BZ News From B’nai Zion Congregation in Shreveport, LA From Rabbi Jana After Sukkot ends, after we celebrate Simchat Torah and come together for another Memorial Service, look at your Jewish calendar and you will see… regular days. After a month of what seemed like non-stop holidays, family gatherings, worship services, soul searching… we can now get back to “normal.” I hope that “normal” means “new and improved, now with the influence of the holy days infusing our lives with new meaning and purpose.” Of course every week we have Shabbat… our “oasis in time” to take a break and make sure that we do continue to take time with family and friends. It is a time of relaxation, reflection, and “re-Jew-venation.” Come join us at services and our Torah discussion group, because you know that taking a few minutes out of your week will really enhance everything else you do. During the Holy Days we were given a moment to focus on what our tradition calls: Cheshbon Hanefesh, an accounting of the soul. At tax time we need to review our financial accounts, but during the High Holy Days we are supposed to review our spiritual accounts. When you review your financial accounts, you can see what your priorities are in your life by how much money you spend on them, or how important it is that – even when there isn’t a lot of money each month – you shuffle things so that you can cover those expenses. For some people it is bare necessities like shelter, food, health, and only dreams of being able to afford anything extra. For others it is a realization that they used extra money for entertainment, or new stuff in their world, or other things on the list of things they love to do. Now that you have had the intensity of the High Holy Days to force you to look at your spiritual accounts, do you see what your spiritual priorities are? Are your spiritual accounts so low that everything else is getting covered first? Are you barely putting anything into your spiritual account each week? Did you commit to “pay yourself first?” Did you commit to take time to refresh your soul? Having a lot of money to deal with during your review of your financial accounts can be a blessing or a difficulty. Having an abundance of things in your spiritual account puts everything you do in a positive balance. I know that having a “vacation” from Jewish holidays doesn’t mean that your time isn’t filled with many other obligations. I also know that ignoring your spiritual accounts for too long can be detrimental. If you don’t find time to look at your spiritual check book every day, please look at it at least once a week. I love it when you come to services as part of your spiritual accounting. I think it helps to know that you are not alone in your spiritual pursuits. The people, the words and the music in the service are proven ways to keep you on track. If you can’t make it to B’nai Zion you can join everyone watching online. For Rosh HaShanah morning we had more than 100 people watch the service, and our YouTube channel has had over 6,000 views. From Rabbi Jana

After Sukkot ends, after we celebrate Simchat Torah and come together for another Memorial Service, look at your Jewish calendar and you will see… regular days. After a month of what seemed like non-stop holidays,

family gatherings, worship services, soul searching… we can now get back to “normal.”

I hope that “normal” means “new and improved, now with the influence of the holy days infusing our lives with new meaning and purpose.”

Of course every week we have Shabbat… our “oasis in time” to take a break and make sure that we do continue to take time with family and friends.

For others it is a realization that they used extra money for entertainment, or new stuff in their world, or other things on the list of things they love to do.

Now that you have had the intensity of the High Holy Days to force you to look at your spiritual accounts, do you see what your spiritual priorities are? Thanks to all who attended, participated, and prayed with us during our

High Holy Days. Our Rabbi always makes this time so meaningful for us.

This always seems to be the busiest time of the year at B’nai Zion. But this

simply is not true. We are busy all year long. Just look at our calendar. We

have many fun, exciting, educating programs almost every week. Please

plan to attend as it takes a great deal of preparation to present all of these

activities. Your attendance makes it worthwhile!

After a fairly quiet summer, the board and I will try to manage temple

affairs for another year. Thanks to you, our congregants, who make this

possible. If any of you have any issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to me or

anyone on the Board.

Our Donor Wall dedication was well attended. As we had already dedicated our new

sanctuary, I suggested we have this after a Friday night service before Rosh Hashanah so that

it would be up for our High Holy Days. For those who have not been able to see the wall, we

have pictures on our website. It is a beautiful work of art. Thanks again to all who made our

sanctuary a reality.

Over the next few months we will be working on our budget for next year. Through your

generosity, we will continue to manage with as close to a balanced bottom line as possible.

During this next year, we will install new playground equipment. We are so fortunate to have

numerous children to enjoy this new project. Please consider donating a little extra to help

this cause.

Finally, several of us are planning to attend “The Biennial” during the first week of November

in Orlando. This is a meeting of the leaders of the Reform

Judaism movement. I, personally, am looking forward to

meeting other congregational presidents to share

thoughts and ideas. If any of you have a desire to go

please contact the office. We can help make that happen.

As always, find out what’s happening by reading our

bulletin or looking on-line.

Shalom Y’all

From our Educator, Helaine Braunig

We proudly use the ISJL Curriculum

One of the first things that a young child learns about a sukkah is that it is a temporary structure. Erected for the week-long festival of Sukkot, it has traditional ties to both the booths set up in the fields during harvest seasons and the structures the ancient Israelites lived in during their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness before entering the Promised Land. We decorate the sukkah, observe the mitzvot that accompany it—waving the lulav, dwelling in the sukkah (having a meals there counts as “dwelling” in it)—and bring ourselves close once again to the land and its bounty. However, the sukkah comes down after the holiday is over. Some people take the fragrant etrog and stud it with cloves, then use it as a spicebox for havdalah, the ceremony that marks the end of Shabbat. In that way, Sukkot is not forgotten as we carry the sweetness of Shabbat into the next week. Additionally, we know that Sukkot will return next year on the 15th of Tishri, and that our holiday cycle, like our life cycle, provides structure for our year. With the end of Sukkot we move to Simchat Torah, our holiday of celebration in the giving of the Torah. We sing and dance with our Torah scrolls, and we also use the occasion to welcome our K-5 students into Religious School. The consecration of our children, under the shelter of peace provided by the tallit held over their heads, is another way to bring structure to our year. We formally welcome children at the age of 5 with the hope that Consecration will stand out among their earliest Jewish memories. This year we will welcome Josiah Brooks, Caroline Kaufman, Ana Murov, and Stephen Muslow. I invite you to join Rabbi Jana and Cantor Neil and the children’s families on Friday night, October 2 for this special event. At the end of the month we will be delighted to welcome Abby Klionsky, our ISJL education fellow, back to our community. Abby will join me in conducting services, leading Torah study, providing enrichment for our teachers and programming for our students and our teens. Watch for email announcements of the specifics of the weekend. We are so fortunate to have Abby for a second year – she is smart and engaging, and everyone who has interacted with her in the past has been eager for another chance to do so. L’shalom,

Helaine Braunig

There will be no Religious School October 18.

It is such a blessing for us to celebrate happy events together. Please join us each

month when we bless and honor those who will be celebrating a birthday or

anniversary during the month. If your birthday or anniversary is in October

we will celebrate and honor you October 2, 2015 during services .

If your birthday or anniversary is in November your Simcha Shabbat will be

Delta Jewish Golf Tournament

Delta Hebrew Union Congregation

Box 1333

Greenville, MS 38702-1333 Greetings,

This year the Delta Jewish Open will be held in Greenville, MS the weekend of October 31 and November 1, 2015. The profits from this activity will be donated to Henry S. Jacobs Camp and The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life. This two day event is more than a golfing fundraiser; it's an opportunity to renew old friendships, as well as fun, kibitzing, and good food. You don't have to play golf to enjoy the weekend!

The B’nai Zion office has the tournament and tee box sponsorship applications. Some those who want to support the Camp Institute, whether they plan to attend or not, may choose to be a tee box sponsor. We appreciate your help and support. Thank you.

Yours truly, Barry S. Piltz Jewish Open Tournament Committee

‘Bark Mitzvah’ Project

Instead of bringing our pets to B’nai Zion to be blessed this year, we will be launching a “Bark Mitzvah” project for the Northwest Louisiana Humane Society. They have requested dog treats and chewable bones, dog toys, paper towels, and bleach, to help keep

the place sanitary. Please help us and collect treats and helpful supplies for them. They said that they will allow us to visit the dogs on Sunday, October 18, if anyone is interested.

Bring the Bark Mitzvah treats and supplies to B’nai Zion by October 17 so that we can visit the

Humane Society to deliver the donations on October 18. Please contact the office or Rabbi Jana if

you would like to join us when we visit the Northwest Louisiana Humane Society as we bless the

dogs at our Bark Mitzvah .

Every week we ask the Religious School students what is the next Jewish holiday? They now know to say: Shabbat. We look forward to seeing you at Shabbat services.

The next Jewish holiday after Shabbat is: Chanukah, which, as always, will be the 25th of Kislev This year it will begin Sunday, December 6. Watch for news about an awesome Chanukah concert and Chanukah parties.

Letter from ADL

September 11, 2015

Dear Friends,

As the high holy days approach, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) wanted to reach out and wish each of you a happy and healthy new year. We also wanted to share with you ADL’s work in your area this past year. We joined your distress with the recent anti-Semitic posting on the Caddo Parish Animal Shelter's official Facebook page. We shared your shock and commented immediately on the impact of images and symbols juxtaposed in such a horrific, hurtful way.

Unfortunately, anti-Semitism is not new to the Jewish community and North Louisiana is not the only community that has experienced traumatic hate like your recent incident. ADL sees hundreds of disgusting acts of anti-Semitic vandalism, harassment, and physical assaults each year. Our annual audit of anti-Semitic incidents shows year after year that this is far from a historic phenomenon but rather something that rears its ugly head all too often. Over the past decade, an average of 1,225 anti-Semitic incidents was reported to ADL each year in the United States. That math works out to be more than three incidents per day, every day of the year.

Despite ADL’s statistics that indicate 12% of Americans (nearly 38 million adults), hold anti-Semitic views, ADL continually finds partners committed to fulfilling our dual mission of stopping the defamation of the Jewish people and securing justice and fair treatment for all. In this past year, North Louisiana has demonstrated a deep interest in combating hatred and ending bias. Specifically:

Over 160 law enforcement officials from this community attended an ADL training on white supremacy, government extremism and hate crimes sponsored by the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office. In the middle of an ice storm law enforcement officials from the Sheriff’s Office, various local Police Departments, Homeland Security, State Police, US Marshall’s Service, and university police eagerly collected information and strategies for combating hate in your communities. Local educators are utilizing ADL’s incredible education materials to discuss diversity and respect in meaningful ways. C.E. Byrd High School has joined tens of thousands of schools across the country by becoming a No Place for Hate® school. In fact, one of this year’s ADL’s Southern Region art and essay winner was a Byrd Yellow jacket, who won ADL's Art and Essay Contest with the theme, "Imagine a World without Hate." Students are showing that they want to build that world and are ready. Community leaders are reaching out to ADL for support, advice and direction when anti-Semitic incidents are reported or threats are received. ADL is offering its support to your community both behind the scenes and publically.

The Southern Region welcomed Helaine Braunig as a new member of its Advisory Board Directors. This one of many necessary steps to bring the voice of North Louisiana into the vital work being done both from our office in New Orleans and our 27 other offices around the country.

ADL looks forward to continuing to work with your community this year. Let us all channel the anger we experienced from the horrible Facebook post as an impetus to work together to end hatred, anti-Semitism, and other forms of discrimination.

Sincerely,

Allison Padilla-Goodman Nancy B. Timm Regional Director Regional Board Chair
