Sam’s Desk

To all the resident here at the Parkland Lodge, just a reminder about Friday Activities. There have been some changes. Amanda use to work every second Saturday and I would do the activities on Friday’s. Now Ali, works every second Friday instead of Saturday. Because of that I do the Friday activities when Ali is off. There are no Friday activities when both Ali and Cindy are not working as I am the only office staff available.

I will be away on March 6th, for a one day first aide course. March 27th is tentatively set as the Activity Coordinator meeting in Hinton, so I will be away that day. Our February 27th, meeting in Hinton was can-celled. Good Friday this year falls on March 30th so both Cindy and I will be away as it is a Statutory Holiday.

Matamao meetings: the Matamao Senior’s club was formed in the 1980’s by resident to raise money for activities. Fund stuff for the resi-dents at the Parkland Lodge to do and keep busy. Our meetings are usu-ally on the last Wednesday of each month, and all residents are welcome to join in. We can always use your ideas, help by volunteering for our fundraiser, and of course where to spend the money we raise. The meet-ings are held in the board room which is across from the Breast Cancer Quilt by Ali’s office.

Matamao, what does that mean? Well, when everyone was asking me what the word meant we were able to find an original board member to tell us. She explained that Matamao is the native word for Friend.

Ali, is having a Clothing Sale on Saturday March 10th in the after-noon so if you have any clothes to donate you can take them Ali and she will put them in the clothing sale. All money raised goes to the Matamao Senior’s Club and in turn to the residents of the Parkland Lodge.

Spring is just around the corner, so think about any new picnics or trips you might want to do and let me know. We are always looking for new things.

Quote of the Month: The flower doesn't dream of the bee.

The flower blossoms and the bee comes.

Birthstone of the Month: Aqua-

marine

For centuries, aquamarine has been a symbol of

youth, hope, health and fidelity. Since this gem-

stone is the color of water and the sky, it is said to

embody eternal life. It was long thought that Aqua-

marine has a soothing influence on married cou-

ples, making it a good anniversary gift.

The Flower of The Month: Daffodil

The daffodil stands for unequaled love. To give this

flower to someone expresses quite a lot. With

their bright yellow petals, daffodils seem the per-

fect way to say that the sun is always shining

whenever your significant other is around. The

other March flower is the jonquil, which actually is

a particular kind of daffodil. It signifies a desire

that affection be returned. It also is used to con-

vey sympathy.

Blurb from Ali

Can February march? No, but April may! We'll start this month off right, with a silly pun.

Here we are in March already. When I worked four months in a summer job those months just dragged on and on. Now that I'm here with you I feel like the new month happens before I'm even done with the last month. I

don't feel like I've been here for ten months, it feels like four! But on to the news…

First off, this month we are trying something different in order to save paper. As you may already know, instead of everyone getting a calendar and a newsletter we will be handing everyone a calendar, and the newsletter will be made available to those who would like one. The newsletters and extra calendars will both be hung on the

blue photo board across from the big calendar.

This month we will be going to Smitty's Restaurant for lunch, along with our usual trips out and about around town. That being said it is by no means a really relaxing month - we have three back to back Saturday events go-

ing on!

First up is the Crib Tournament, this is happening on Saturday March 3rd and will be held in the Green area. The fee is $10 a person and lunch and refreshments will be provided. You can find the sign-up sheet on the Sign-up

Board, which is the black board beside the large Calendar.

The following Saturday, March 10th, we will have the Clothing Sale. That is going to be held in the front entry way of the Lodge from 1:00 to 4:00, rather than 12:30 to 4:00. There will be a new raffle draw up, and we will also be selling Luck of the Irish tickets as well. If you or someone you know has any new or lightly used clothes to donate please get them to Ali no later than Thursday, March 8th. The morning of March 8th we will have exercise, but

the rest of the morning I will be setting up for the sale on Saturday.

The following Saturday, March 17th, is St. Patrick's Day and we will be hosting a flurry of events. At 1:30 the Park-land Ladies Auxiliary will be having a Tea and Bake Sale. Then, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, we will be hosting a St. Patrick's Day get together! There will be snacks, goodies and refreshments but most exciting of all we will have

musicians coming to play some Irish music! And the third event, also taking place in the evening, is Trivia Night.

Trivia Night is held at the Legion, it is a fund raiser for the Lodge and the proceeds will be put towards the Sen-iors Transportation Bus. There will be at least one team from the Lodge and before you go thinking, "I'm not that smart, I shouldn't go…" I want to clarify - there are several different categories, not unlike Jeopardy, such as His-tory, Politics, and so on; and no one is expected to be a jack of all trades. It's a nice night out, there is no pres-sure, it's all just for fun and fundraising. Also, if you join the team for Parkland Lodge it is free so that's a bonus plus the bus will be taking us to and from the Legion. If you are interested in joining the team please see Ali, or

Eleanor!

As a side note, the Luck of the Irish raffle will be drawn during Trivia Night, and there are several other raffles

with prizes donated from the community businesses you can enter for as well while you're there.

Thankfully it's no Ides of March. I had to look that term up, you know? I didn't know what the significance was apart from a line in one of Shakespeare's plays. So this is what I found out. The Ides of March was a date in the Roman calendar corresponding to March 15th, it was a day highly recognized by the Romans as the deadline for settling debts. The Ides of March, initially not a very dramatic day, became renowned as the day Julius Caesar was assassinated. Which was then dramatized even more by the English playwright William Shakespeare. Then, having been written by Shakespeare, of course it was put into modern high school and post secondary curriculum widely

used across North America. I'm sure we're all happier knowing that.

Friday, March 2nd

At 10:30 we will be making some clay jewellery! This is really neat, easy and customizable. We will be taking clay, cutting shapes, and imprinting them with stamps or other impression making objects such as lace or seashells. Then we'll make these into pendants or necklaces. It's so easy you'll have plenty of time to make two or three (or more!). They also can double as aromatherapy pendants if you'd like to add a few drops of

your favorite essential oils, such as peppermint or vanilla.

1:30 we will be hosting Social Hour. This is a fundraising activity for us and the proceeds go the Parkland Lodge. We serve drinks (water, juice, soft drinks, wine,

beer) and chips while selling Nevada pull-tab tickets.

And as always, at 3:00 the Sister Stichers knitting group will meet by the fire. I will

be taking this time to decorate for Saint Patrick's Day.

Friday, March 23rd

To celebrate (or perhaps to beckon) spring's arrival I thought it might be nice to make some sun catchers! We will be melting clear plastic beads using muffin tins and embroi-dery hoops to make circular catchers of different sizes. This is a more relaxing craft with literally no artistic skills neces-sary! You can make patterns or designs in your sun catcher by using different coloured beads, or even make a sun catch-

er all one colour - there are endless possibilities.

Because the smell of melting plastic isn't exactly pleasant, we will design our catchers in my Activity Room, then melt them outside in a toast oven. Unless it's drop dead gorgeous,

spring in full bloom weather outside, in which case everything will be done outside so

we can appreciate it.

1:30 we'll be holding out Social Hour, Don't forget to come support the Lodge! You might win it big, but only if you play. Then at 3:00 the Sister Stichers knitting group meet

once again by the fire. I will be taking this time to decorate for Easter.

Short (Irish) Story: Nowhere To Hide Walking into the bar, Shamus said to O'Hair the bartender, "Pour

me a stiff one - just had another fight with the little woman."

"O, bejabbers," said O'Hair, "And how did this one end?" "Hah, when it was over," Shamus replied, "she came to me on

her hands and knees."

"Really?" cried O'Hair, "now that's a switch! What did she say?" "She said, 'Come out from under the bed, Shamus, you little

chicken.'"

Short (Irish) Story: One Last Request

Cresley Irwin goes up to Father O'Reilly after his Sunday morn-

ing service, and she's in tears.

He says, "So what's bothering you, Cresley my dear?" She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. Me husband passed away last night." The priest sighs, "Oh, Cresley, that's terrible. Tell me, did he have

any last requests?" Sniffling Cresley nods, "That he did, Father ..."

The priest says, "What did he ask, Cresley?" She says, "He said, "Cresley, would you put

down that gun?"
