Project: The Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust (LLPT) is proposing to redevelop the River Club in Observatory, for residential, commercial, institutional and associated uses.

Today’s municipalelection is probablygoing to be the mostexciting elections wehave ever had becausethe outcome is riddledwith uncertainty.

Unlike previouselections, the majorplayers, the ANC andthe DA, were confidentabout winningconstituencies, but inthis election, therelatively new boy on theblock, the EFF, has sentthese two major partiesinto a worry mode.

Prior to the entry ofthe EFF, the two majorparties felt very secureamid the less influentialsmaller parties likeCOPE, the ACDP andthe UDM. The EFF hassecured their position

on the politicallandscape, as a force tobe reckoned with, eversince its populist leader,Julius Malema, seizedevery opportunity toembarrass our presidentat every turn with hispay-back-the moneycampaign.

Malema shot to famehere and abroad with hisirrepressible garruloustactics inside and outsideof Parliament. He was sopersistent that thedesperate Speaker,Baleka Mbete, was at aloss for words to controlthe young upstart, whotreated his formerseniors, including hisformer boss, thePresident, withunrepentant disdain.

Not even ourpresident’s uselessguffawing could savehim from furtherembarrassment from thefiery Malema.

Malema did moredamage to the Teflon-coated President thanthe 90 000 booingmourners could do atMadiba’s funeral.

The DA could notgrow fast enough in theblack townships becauseof its very white image,even though it has ablack leader andbecause it was sovulnerable to chantsfrom the very desperateANC that the DA is awhite racist party withtoken blacks in charge.

Lindiwe Mazibuko’slatest attack on herparty, the DA, about

male racism, falls rightinto the lap of the EFFand the ANC. Thedesperate ANC has noanswer to the growingpopularity of the EFFamong the jobless youthof this country.

The ANC, sadly, likeall revolutionary parties,start off well, likeZANU– PF buteventually go off trackwhen corruption sets itsugly tentacles into theleadership. There is littlereason to doubt that theANC has captured theSABC in spite of ANCsecretary-general GwedeMantashe’s feebleprotestations against thedespicable action byHlaudi Motsoeneng toban all coverage ofviolence. The ANC isaware that most of theviolent protests are theresult of poor servicedelivery in the poorly-run ANC municipalities.

Hopefully the recentcourt ruling to compelthe SABC not to censorviolent protests and thereinstatement of thejournalists that wereunfairly fired by theSABC will give the publicbroadcaster enoughtime to correct theirwrongs of the past twomonths.

Watershedelection

In 1994 a majority forthe ANC was the rightthing because it gavethem the power tocorrect the wrongs of thepast, unhindered – 22years later, this majorityhas become our downfall;their veering tounmanageablecorruption has becomeunstoppable, both inParliament and in ourcourts of law. Anotheryear of them will spelldoom.

Our vote may not getus a government that candeliver but it can reducecorruption by preventingany one party fromwinning the majority ofseats in government.

Media reports by ANCsoothsayers allege thatDA election posters aresending out confusingmessages, is grosslyinaccurate and begs aresponse.

It is not only partyleaders Mmusi Maimaneand Patricia De Lille’sposters displayed.

If they had taken timeto take a drive throughthe suburban streets ofthe Cape Metro, theywould have noticed the

DA candidate wardcouncillor postersaffixed to the municipalstreet light poles.

The DA is not “tooembarrassed” by itselected candidates, whounlike their ANCcounterparts, haveundergone a rigorousselection process, andproud to display itscandidate posters.

The iconic NelsonMandela belongs to allof South Africa, and notonly to the ANC.

The formerlegendary statesmanwould certainly not beproud of the embattledANC fraught withcorruption and sexscandals in its upperechelons of leadership.It is the current ANCthat has been sendingout confusing messagesto the electorate, andnot the DA.
