GENERAL MEETINGS:

Our general meetings are held on the FIRST Monday of

the month unless otherwise notified. They are held in

the Presbyterian Church on the corner of Denman Camp

Road and Freshwater Street, Torquay.

Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start.

Plants to be judged need to be tabled by 6.45pm

Maryborough Orchid Show 13th– 15th Sept. Set up is on Wednesday 12th Sept. (Display) from

about 1pm. Names to Rob Anderson by 10th Sept. If you have plants available but can’t get to Maryborough, give one of the Committee a call. We can’t put on a good display without plants! Show finishes Saturday with prize presentation at 1pm. HBOS Spring Show 28th – 30th September. Set up on 27th. See page 5 and 6 for details.

An Orchid book library is available at the Church Hall for all members to use.

Thursday 20th September 10-11am “Growing the Modern Dancing Lady” by Sam Cowie This highly informative presentation will be filled with practical advice on growing beautiful Oncidium Orchids. Sam Cowie is a Professional Orchid Horticulturalist who is based on the Sunshine Coast. Sam’s large scale commercial operation provides orchids to clientele across Australia.

Vale Stan Ruttiman

Stan joined the HBOS in 2009 and was an active

member of the Society, serving on the

management committee for several years until ill

health precluded this. He was always happy to help

out with shows where possible and took on many

necessary tasks.

Stan was particularly fond of growing species

Cattleyas and Laelias and had a good collection of

these orchids.

Stan passed away early this month and members

that were able to attend paid their respects at his

funeral on 3rd Sept.

Dendrobium nobile is the type species for what we call ‘Softcane Dendrobiums’. It is a medium sized, cool to hot growing terrestrial or lithophytic species from the Chinese Himalayas, Assam, eastern Himalayas, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam . It is found in broadleaf, evergreen, lowland forests and primary montane forests as well as on mossy limestone rocks at elevations of 200 to 2000 meters. It has erect, clustered stems carrying persistent leaves. They blooms mostly in the winter and spring but is possible throughout the year. Inflorescences are short, 2 to 4 flowered racemes with fragrant, waxy, heavy-textured, long-lived, flowers that arise at the upper nodes of leafed and leafless canes. There are numerous colour forms of this species. They need a decided winter rest from fertilizer and water to ensure a good bloom season and the yellowing of the leaves in the autumn is the sign to begin. (from www. orchidspecies.com )

Hervey Bay Orchid Society Annual Spring Show - It’s Your Show

This year our show will be bigger and better than ever! For the first time the show will run over 3 days – Friday 28th and Saturday 29th September from 8am to 4pm and Sunday 30th from 8am to 2pm. Set up is on Thursday 27th starting at 8am with plants for our display required by 10am at the latest. Plant names need to be sent to Rob Anderson (jrmassage2@gmail.com or ph. 41244193) by 23rd September so that name labels can be made. This is a big task so please make sure you get your names in on time. Members sale plants (to go on the sales tables) are not to be set up before 4pm and no purchases before 4pm please. This can be a distraction when there are other jobs to be done. Please remember that all plants on the sales table must be free of pests and disease and well established in their pot – something you would be proud to sell to another orchid grower! If you don’t think it is healthy or well established then leave it at home to recover and bring it next year! Floral Art judging starts at 4pm so exhibits need to be placed on the tables before that time. There is a New Venue this year – Xavier Catholic College , 1 Wide Bay Drive, Eli Waters (turn off Hervey Bay - Burrum Heads Rd). This is a great facility and will allow easier access and parking. Please do not park on the grassed areas. The SES will be assisting with parking on the show days. There will be more displays, more orchid vendors, and more entertainment so if everyone gets in and lends a hand we hope this show will be the most successful ever! Obviously a lot of organisation has gone into the planning of the show but being a new venue there is the possibility things might not go exactly as planned so be flexible and remember that we are all doing our best to make it work. There are still plenty of opportunities to get involved, even if it is just for a couple of hours selling tickets at the door. Give Daphne McKenna a call (Ph. 0408063343) if you think you can help. We would love many of our newer members to come and see how it all works and enjoy the company and spectacle of this annual event in our orchid growing calendar. And if that isn’t enough in itself, then as a bonus the Society is putting on a free ‘thank you’ bus trip to the Orchid Species Show in Brisbane for Show helpers. More details below . Finally, remember that there are some roadworks happening at the entrance to Xavier Catholic College so just take care and follow the directions. It will be well signed. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Administrator for this site, with the assistance of Carol Jenkins.

The August IGG was held at Van de Groot’s property in Booral on Saturday 25th August. Van had gone to considerable effort to make us comfortable and there were many flowering orchids to see. As usual there were numerous plants brought in for discussion, and Rob Anderson, Carol Jenkins and Darryl Coombes gave cameo presentations on plants that they had in flower. Rob spoke about Den. aemulum, a native species often called the ‘Ironbark orchid’ while Darryl brought along his well flowered Papilionanthe Mundyi. This is a terete leaved Vandaceous orchid which is a primary hybrid between Ple. vandarum and Ple. teres. Carol’s talk was varied and informative. For afternoon tea there were the usual treats, and Van made some fresh spring rolls which didn’t last very long.The next IGG will be at Ron Colbran’s Place 1 Howard St, Urangan at 2pm on Saturday 22nd Sept.

Childers and Isis District Show Results

Many of our members benched plants for judging which was great to see. There were a lot of plants and it was an eyecatching show.

Les Napper won 5 firsts, Terri Bade won 3 firsts and Champion Orchid, Bevan Neuendorf, Ron Colbran, Giles and Janine Blaber and Tom Robb won 1 first each. There were numerous seconds and thirds from Les, Terri, Bevan, Ron, Tom, as well as Graham Sluce, Carol Jenkins, Val Glasson, Flora and Eric Moloney, Daphne McKenna, Ross Skyring, Carol Morgan, Chris Trudgian, and Don Cantle. Well done to all involved!

Some of our members also did well in the cut flower and foliage sections.

The Orchid House is looking for

more volunteers.

We are fortunate to have an Orchid

House in Hervey Bay at the Botanic

Gardens but it can’t operate without

volunteers. If you can help you can

contact Jacqui Mitchell at the Orchid

House (PH 4125 9870). You don’t need

any prior knowledge of orchids to be a

volunteer - it’s a learning experience.
