A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF PRIMARY"And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us."
Titus 2:7-8 New Living Translation (NLT) God’s word is the truth that we aspire
to live by. In Titus chapter 2, we find an instruction to work towards each and every day as teachers and role models at Caloundra Christian College. We are not perfect, we may fail, but we are aiming high to help grow your children into strong, intelligent, hard-working, and courteous young men and women for the future, who learn to protect themselves in an ever changing world.
This was written as one of my News and Views articles for 2016, and this is where I begin the last Term 3, 2018 article. I would like to use the above scripture, Titus 2, almost as a measuring stick to gauge where we are heading, and also to check against our expectations of 2016.
Welcome to Week 10 of Term 3, 2018. NAPLAN - how wonderful it was to see our results from our Year 3 and 5 students in the Primary School. Over the past years in Primary, our focus has been around diagnostic testing in mathematics, reading, spelling and, of late, our writing. In the Primary School it was not only our goal to improve, but also to encourage our students to love and succeed in the area of writing. Thanks to our newly appointed Writing Coach, Mrs Julie March, and the Primary staff who have been working as a team each week after school, to improve our writing and work on the ability to teach and pass on our expertise to our students. Our NAPLAN writing results have shown our journey, and we are
pleased to report that the largest majority of our students are either on, or well above, the National benchmark. In addition to the NAPLAN results, our new PAT testing has shown more detailed reports of success in writing and the other subject areas. The staff would also like me to remind parents that at any stage, you are welcome to ask them for more information as to where your child is in regards to their academic status.
2019 is quickly approaching and I would like to give parents the information that is always discussed and talked about around this time of year – next year’s class teachers! As you can imagine, these are subject to change with circumstances beyond our control, however, this is the plan for 2019.
Sadly, we are announcing that Mr Adam Strickland has resigned from his position of Year 6 Teacher, and will be leaving our College at the end of Term 4, to pursue a career back in his homeland of New Zealand. We want to take this opportunity to thank him for the love, support, and the extra curricula work he has given to both the College, and our students both Primary and Secondary. We will miss him dearly as he has been an integral part of the united Primary team. Therefore, we would like to announce the Year 6 Teacher for 2019 – Mr Mark Maritz. As you would already know, Mr Maritz was contracted as the Secondary Sports Coordinator for 12 months prior to taking up the position of Primary sports teacher. With his experience in Secondary academics, we welcome him
into our Year 6 cohort to prepare our students’ transition into Secondary School. This means that within the next few weeks we will be advertising and interviewing for a Primary Sport teacher – watch this space!
CLASSES FOR 2019:Prep – Mrs Lindsay MaasdorpYear 1 – Mrs Julie MarchYear 2 – Mrs Lyn RudduckYear 3 – Mrs Helen PorterYear 4 – Mrs Ashleigh ScheuYear 5 – Mrs Brianna OsborneYear 6 – Mr Mark MaritzJapanese – Miss Alissa DumkeMusic – Mrs Rebecca FiligaSport – A new appointment TBA
In closing, our staff are always here to meet with you and discuss your child’s journey, to make sure we are creating a community of strong, independent, successful learners who will succeed in every area of their life – mentally, physically and spiritually. Just as Titus 2 states, “everything we do (we endeavor) to reflect the integrity and seriousness of our teaching.” We look forward to seeing you all in Term 4, and pray that all of our families over these holidays are safe and well, ready for a dynamic end of Year in Primary.
Yours in ChristJulie Lockyer
RESOURCE CENTRE NEWSThe Importance of Regular Library BorrowingWe all know that as children grow, reading is a crucial factor in their education and life. The benefit of regular borrowing from a library and daily reading for pleasure makes a powerful influence and substantial difference on children’s learning. Students at Caloundra Christian College are encouraged to regularly borrow books and all students from Prep – Year 9 have a weekly opportunity to do so. The encouragement and support of parents and guardians in the promotion of library use is essential to give children the best chance to foster a love of reading and literature. When parents are readers themselves, they may assume that their children will be readers and that kids will just learn to love learning, but strong readers get there with help.
Research has shown that many strong readers are habitual library-goers, as the passion to read results from exposure to lots of books and the opportunity to explore a variety of interests. Regular library visits inevitably lead
to more reading. Our library collection is wonderful! We are constantly updating our books and have many, many popular titles, so there is no need to spend money to expose your children to quality literature. For avid readers, we are flexible with the number of books they borrow. Our College library staff can recommend books
that broaden a student's tastes and expand their minds, and the casual nature of our library allows them to explore possible interests at low risk. One of the joys of borrowing from a library, is that students have free choice from a huge range of books. Good readers thrive when they can share their thoughts on books and our staff love to read and engage with students.
Borrowing books from our library also teaches responsibility. Students learn about treating things that belong to others with care, creating routines,
and becoming organised. Please encourage regular visits to our library and demonstrate that you value books and reading.

SHARING OUR COAST: A HOME STAY EXPERIENCE Term 3 was another busy term for CCC International! Our friends from Seikei Elementary School came for their second annual visit, to share a week with our Primary School. Middle School had visitors from Meitoku Highschool, Hoyu High School, and Katsushika Middle School at various times in the term. Our many thanks go to buddies, CCC staff, and home stay families, who gave such warm and welcoming experiences to these students.
It is always a delight to welcome our Japanese visitors who are so courteous and grateful of being here.
Here is one host family’s experience with a Japanese boy they hosted:
"We really enjoyed having him. He was such a lovely boy, well-mannered and a pleasure to have. He absolutely LOVED walking barefooted on Kings Beach every day after school and feeling the lovely, white soft sand on the soles of his feet - the little things that we take for granted.
He LOVED the great outdoors, running races on the beach, flying a colourful kite at Currimundi Lake, collecting shells, and looking for sea creatures etc. at Shelly Beach… In the evening, he would read to us in English about his homework, and also Japanese postcards of historical places that he bought for us.On the final day, he gave us a note written beautifully in English, thanking us for what we had done for him. How very special is that!!"
It is indeed very special for CCC that we have this opportunity, to share our Coast and culture to so many overseas visitors each year.
We are always looking for more families to be part of the International Program. We have more hosting opportunities coming up in Term 4, and seeking to involve as many College families as possible.
If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Home Stay Coordinators Mimi Petrusma & Maddie Kent at [email protected] or 0402 888 970.
