THANK YOU!FOR SUPPORTING FOURTH STREET CLINICThank you to everyone who supported the Fourth Street Clinic during our recent fund-raising events. Through your

donations gathered at both our Charity and Award Gala and our Charity Golf Tournament, we were able to raise over

$2800 for the clinic. These funds go directly to providing quality healthcare and support services for Utah’s homeless

population. We could not have done this without your support.

In addition to the individual donations, we want to thank our sponsors who helped make these events possible:

Friends:

I get into ruts. Leads, proposals, interviews. After a while, it is really hard to come at projects

fresh, with new ideas, enthusiasm, and insights.

Well, I must admit I had gotten into a rut recently. Guess I had just heard the same people

talking about the same things too long, and felt like I was saying all the same stuff. I wasn’t

being creative, and because they had heard it before, our folks weren’t growing either. And let’s

face it, in these days of fi erce competition in the AEC industry, we have to stay at the top of our

game.

So I went on vacation - it always a good idea to rest, put the problems away, and think about

what movie to go see. But, like all of you, just because I am on vacation my work didn’t stop,

and we got short-listed for an interview while I was out of town recharging my batteries.

That is where SMPS came in. I hired a former competitor, whom I met through SMPS to prep

our team for an interview. As I heard it, the prep went great and the interview was wonderful.

The team heard new stuff and did things differently.

Now, it takes a bit of courage to hire someone who does your job to do your job when you’re

not around. But I think we all know that our friends/competitors all have strengths and what a

great opportunity to be able to learn from them. I was really relieved that I was able to reach

into the resources I know because of SMPS and fi nd someone who could give something

helpful and meaningful to our team. I don’t know if it was new insights, new information or just

a different way of putting things to our team. Doesn’t matter. They felt great about the interview,

and I feel great that they felt great.

Now I am going to dip into that bag of resources again to prep our next big interview. And this

time, I will be there too. I need to learn new stuff. It is way too easy to lose your ability to have

original thought when you have been doing the same thing for a while.

The terrifi c thing is that through this organization we have smart, seasoned friends who can be

contracted to help us get through the “marketer’s block” and onto the next level. It gives me an

edge, it gives our fi rm an edge, and I have to think it gives our industry an edge.

Best wishes,

Fran
