By the time you read this, I hope to have completed my third California International Marathon (CIM). I have envisioned the entire run. It starts on a crisp December day with the wind at my back (running into the wind for 26.2 miles really takes its toll). I’m running comfortably in the beginning of the race, which leads to a “negative split” (i.e. running the 2nd half of the race faster than the first half), and crossing the finish line in time to qualify for the Boston Marathon for the second time. That is my positive path vision. Since I’m a realist, I also went through the other possibilities such as, rain and the dreaded head winds, the body not quite cooperating like it used to, hitting “the wall” (imagine a gorilla jumping on your back), mentally digging deep to get through the last miles, collapsing in relief when finished, and promising (a promise which I won’t keep) that I will never do it again! Why is this relevant? As business leaders, we all have visions for our businesses, just as I do for running a marathon. At the beginning of a new year, I like to take inventory and reflect upon what worked well, what needs improvement and how to best execute our business strategies. We all have short and long term business goals and ideas about what we want to achieve. But, it’s the way in which we realistically confront and handle adversity that will determine our success in achieving our vision. This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Thomas Edison “Vision without execution is hallucination.” It’s our determination and grit in the context of the situation that leads to the continued attainment of our goals. Jim Collins’ embodies this idea in his book, Good to Great, which includes some outstanding management lessons. One of his key messages for great leaders involves perseverance. His message is twofold. First, one should always retain faith that you will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties. Second, one should always confront the most brutal facts of the current reality, whatever those circumstances might be. In the last five years with River City Bank, I’ve found that tenacity is a common attribute among successful business leaders. I’ve enjoyed many conversations with each of you regarding your business strategies, obstacles faced, lessons learned the hard way, and leading your teams to overcome difficulties and execute solid solutions. Your stories are truly inspiring to me and have helped make my job more interesting.

I wish you and your teams continued success in 2014 and beyond. The businesses within the Sacramento region have great leadership that continues to persevere, and I’m proud to be part of a business community so rich with enthusiasm and drive. With the team of business leaders we have in the Sacramento area, I believe our future is bright. I thank each of you for letting me be a part of your successes!

Cheers,Steve

ships and gaining experience in presenting credits to the Board Loan Committee. In 2013, Abe was elevated to his current position as Portfolio Manager where he enjoys working closely with River City Bank’s decision makers to respond to the needs of clients quickly and effectively. He also appreciates working with experienced bankers who provide a positive environment in which to continue learning and developing his skills in commercial lending.

Abe graduated from Bob Jones University in May of 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Financial Management. He lives in Natomas with his wife and three children. He is most inspired by his family and friends (their experience and accomplishments), really good writing and the curiosity and imagination of his kids. Abe enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, reading, and playing and watching sports.

It’s said that experience breeds wisdom. It often does. In Abe Green’s case, it has. When he took his first job as a laborer cleaning up trash and debris at commercial properties and residential rentals, it’s unlikely he could have guessed that it would lead to a career with River City Bank. Through his early work experience, Abe discovered that cleaning up evictions made him want to strive for a more

professional line of work, which ultimately led him to a career in the financial industry.

In 2007 Abe joined the River City Bank team as a credit analyst spreading financials and underwriting loan re-quests. After little more than a year, he was promoted to senior credit analyst, handling more complex relation-
