Building Capacity for Collaborative English as a New Language and General Education Model
1. Train each school’s cohort to support collaborative conversations related to supporting English Learners (ELs) in the content classrooms.
Learned and implemented Standards-Based Lesson Tuning Protocol & Integrating Supports for ENLs
2. Each member of this cohort is able to use the protocol to facilitate Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) with colleagues.
3. Each school cohort created a roll out structure for their building (ie Common Planning Time (CPT), Faculty meetings) to build capacity for routine collaboration.
District Focus
•Building Relationships with Colleagues, Students and Families
•High Expectations for Ourselves and All Our Students
–Behavior (Rituals and Routines)
–Academics (Closing the Gap)
•Attendance - Relationships, mentoring and making our students feel welcomed.
2018-2021
Strategic Plan
1. 100% of Newport high school students graduate (academic, vocational and social skills to be successful)
2. All third graders achieve third grade Reading & Math proficiency
3. State score and test results are substantially increased; this success is measured by an array of valid assessment systems, including RI standardized tests (e.g. RICAS)
4. An introspective, flexible, high standards, and innovative educational environment within our schools and community that enables all children to thrive academically, interpersonally and successfully. The system focuses on one student at a time; building powerful connections and relationships.
5. CLIMATE - All our energy is concentrated on student achievement; there is collaboration and productive problem resolution, transparency, respect and trust.
6. The concept of the One Newport resonates throughout the Newport community. Schools join forces with everyone to mutually work together strategically - and everyone is vested in public education and realizes the urgency to help move it forward. Strong schools create strong cities.
Six Strategic Outcomes
• Early Childhood Education
• Technology in the Classroom
• Student Learning Plans
• Learning Climate & Culture
• High Quality Learning Options, Opportunities & Career Pathways
