REPORT ON MAG AND VLF SURVEYPORCUPINE PROJECT - GONZALEZ AND MCINTOSH CLAIMS

JUNE 1984 - JANUARY 1984

IntroductionNewmont Exploration of Canada Limited carried out

magnetic and VLF electromagnetic surveys over the three

claims. These surveys are designed to help the geological

mapping.

Location and Access - Figure l

The claims are within the City of Tinmins, 9 miles

north-east of the city centre. The all weather road from

South Porcupine to the Davidson Tisdale prospect cuts

through the property.9

Geology and Previous Work - Figure 2

Ferguson (1968) shows most of the area to be under

lain by basalts, containing some flow top breccia. At the

south end, variolitic basalts have been mapped.

The claims have more than 3Q* outcrop. The

regional strike is shown to be east-west.

Trenches and pits are signs of much earlier pros

pecting activity. There has been no known geophysical

work on the claims.

The Magnetic Survey - Map lThe Mag survey was done at close density. One

station high readings indicate a heterogeneity of magnetic

materials near surface. The general E-W trend of geology

is supported by the mag contouring.

Page 4: Newmont Exploration of Canada Limited€¦ · Bay Oil and Gas as a Junior Geophysicist in seismic field work. * From 1967-1976 I worked with INCo Exploration, on ground and airborne

-2-

The VIiF Survey - Maps 2 and 3

One definite VLF crossover on the N end of claim

530646 may indicate a conductor within bedrock. Ground

investigation is warranted. The Fraser filtered map shows

two additional peaks - one in the centre of claim 595535

and one in the north-east portion of claim 530647. Both

of these should be investigated on air photos and then by

ground inspection.

Conclusions and Recommendations

A correlation among detailed geological mapping,

magnetics, and the VLF anomalies will be worthwhile. The

magnetic trends and values will better define the boundaries

of geological units.

H. LIMION

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS

(

I, Heikki Limion, received my B.A.Se degree in Engineering Science (Geophysics Option) from the University of Toronto in 1965.

I spent two summers in geophysical field work; one with Hudson's Bay Oil and Gas, and one with INCo Exploration.

In 1965-66 I worked for one year with Hudson's Bay Oil and Gas as a Junior Geophysicist in seismic field work.

*

From 1967-1976 I worked with INCo Exploration, on ground and airborne geophysical surveys, I supervised airborne geophysical operations for four years, and worked on research and development of airborne geophysical systems. I conducted ground geophysical surveys in Canada, U.S.A., and Brazil.

In 1977 and 1978 I was the head of the geophysics section in the Kenya Department of Mines and Geology. During this time, I was under contract to CIDA (the Canadian Inter national Development Agency).

Since the beginning of 1979, I have held the position of Chief Geophysicist of Newmont Exploration of Canada Limited.

I am a member of the Society of Exploration Geo- physicists, the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, the Prospectors and Developers Association, and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

This is a rugged, simple to operate. ONE MAN EM unit. It can be used without line cutting and is thus ideally suited for GROUND LOCATION OF AIRBORNE CONDUCTORS and the CHECKING OUT OF MINERAL SHOWINGS. This instrument utilizes higher than normal EM frequencies and b capable of detecting DISSEMINATED SULPHIDE DEPOSITS and SMALL SULPHIDE BODIES. It accurately isolates BANDED CONDUCTORS and operates through areas of HIGH HYDRO NOISE. The method is capable of deep penetration but due to the high frequency used its penetration is limited in areas of clay and conductive overburden.

The DIP ANGLE measurement detects a conductor from a considerable distance and is used primarily for locating conductors. The FIELD STRENGTH measurement is used to define the shape and attitude of the conductor.
