Gold Coast -Tweed Heads

Ambition as a child?- It was to get into radio, even as a boy. I think I was about 5 or 6 and I used to play on my Dad’s reel to reel tape recorder and the record player and I used to play songs for my family.

Radio training? Where did you go to radio school?- Oh, John Knox of course, one of the best in the biz, and Knoxie and I still keep in touch today.

Commercial radio debut- Commercial radio would be 4KQ in 1987, I think in memory. Great memories there.

What about the country radio circuit that everyone usually does - Yeah, I ended up doing that. I got great grounding and a great news room at 4KQ. I then went off on my own. I went to 4CC Gladstone as my first regional radio gig. I also went to Gosford and Mount Isa. I’ve been to various stations regionally. I just can’t think of them all but those are a few of the ones I’ve been to.

Who’s your best radio mate?- Tough question. I’m going to answer it this way; when you get into radio you meet so many people and they make the difference in what you do. It’s not so much one person, it’s a group of people, you all work together, there’s more than one person.

Most memorable celebrity interview?- Maybe Tina Arena. She was shall we say, little bit feisty. There was a lot of editing involved but still I’m quite passionate about her. She’s still a darlin’.

What’s your all time favourite concert?- My very first concert. That was Bruce Springsteen. I’m trying to think now, it was 1980 something when he appeared at QE2 stadium in Brisbane. My very first concert and it was a memorable concert as well. Fantastic.

Favourite movie?- Back To The Future of course. No actually, I will supersede that; The Great Escape. One of the classics. A great number of famous cast members in that. Just a fantastic movie

What about a favourite book?- Have to admit, I’m not much of a reader of books. I’ll read a newspaper, I’ll read what’s online but when it comes to books, I’m more of a short story person rather than a novel reader.

What’s a pet peeve? Something that really irritates you?- Hearing young journos mispronounce their words and their grammar, things like ‘haitch’ instead of ‘aitch’, that would be one of many grammatical things I dislike on radio.

Are you a collector of anything in particular?- I collect AFL scarves, I’m an AFL boy. I have so many I can’t think of how many. My whole family comes from South Australia. We’re AFL crazy especially come AFL grand final time we have a huge family get together.

A radio lowlight?- People who know me, are aware I’m the first to jump in and take a chance. About a year and a half ago, I was involved with an internet start up, based in Chicago, called “Rivet News.” The producers, journalists and middle management including the News Director were great. But the upper management kept changing the goal posts and payment was never properly explained. (Cue the alarm bells). I eventually got my money back that was owed to me, but it was like pulling teeth. Even at the end, the Director of the start-up kept changing the story about payments. In my opinion, they put on that face of “all is good” when all is not good. It was months of grief and I regret having been involved with this internet start up. I have no idea how they’re doing today - I made some good friends with the news and producing staff there and I’m sure we’ll catch up again in the near future. I’ve now moved on to better things since but I now stay away from internet start ups!

What’s a real highlight for you in your radio career?- The fact that I’ve been doing it for over 31 years now. But I get back to what I said before. It’s the people you meet, that’s what I really enjoy. There are some really good people, really genuine people who you can work with, and you can give them a call after work, even when you’re not working in the same building as them, you can still say g’day.

New years resolution for 2017?- New years resolution is to no longer have new years resolutions because, lets be honest, they’re broken within 20 minutes.

Who makes up the Mayman household?- There’s my wonderful wife of 20 years, Kim, she is American, so we have a lot of ties with America. Every time we go back we always call into some radio station buddies of mine in America. And of course, our 7 year old boy Mitchell and 3 year old yellow Lab called Lucky.

Jocks’ Journal Fun FilesEATING A RED HOT CHILI PEPPER A DAY could extend your life, says research in a Public Library of Science journal. The US study reports that regular consumption of red hot chili peppers could increase your life by 13 %, giving the average person an extra 10.5 years. It states that those who consume chilies are 13 % less likely to avoid dying early compared to those who avoid them. More than 16,000 adults were surveyed based on their diets, background and health from 1988 to 1994. Then participants were checked up on over the next 18 years. People who ate red chilies on regular basis had a mortality rate of under 22 %, while those that avoided cooking with them had a rate of over 33 %. Some of the participants might have used red chilies to cook, while others may have bravely eaten them whole.(I don’t think I’m even brave enough to listen to a whole Red Hot Chili Peppers album! I like the idea of living longer but the idea of having the sensation of having your throat ‘burning longer’ kind of puts me off.)

IF YOU’VE GOT 24 HOURS TO SPARE, you could always entertain yourself by watching this video of a YouTuber known as Mr Beast counting up to 100,000. Mr Beast admits he only did it because he was “bored,” and it may sound a tedious prospect ― but it has garnered more than 6.5 million views. He says he actually spent a total of 40 hours counting upwards ― and sped certain sections of the final video up because his editing software caps the limit at 24 hours. He says: “This is the most I’ve ever tortured myself.”(I’d be keen to try and beat his record but I’m worried that after staying awake for about 40 hours I’d be nearing his target and saying ... (sounding slow and tired) - “99 thousand, seven hundred and twenty - er seven, er or is it nine - um I’ve forgotten ... should I start again?” )

A BOOK OF SHORT STORIES TITLED “FORTY MINUTES LATE” has been returned to a San Francisco library - 100 years late. Bay Area resident Webb Johnson recently returned the book. There was no fine. Johnson’s great grandmother had checked it out from the city’s old Fillmore branch in 1917. She passed away a week before the due date, and the Fillmore branch is no longer around. Johnson found the 1909 book, by F. Hopkinson Smith, in an old trunk in 1996. He assumed the library wouldn’t want it back, but a recently announced “fine forgiveness program” that runs through Feb. 14 inspired him to return it.(My wife recently discovered a Jane Fonda work out video that she borrowed from a shop in 1981 and forgot to return. We estimated that we probably owe them about $14,000 in late fees. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the shop has closed or there has been little demand for Jane Fonda’s Fat Burning Aerobics video.)

100 YEAR OLD AUSSIE CYRIL BARWICK is still driving. Have you ever thought that you might still be driving your car on your 100th birthday? Surprisingly, there are just over 30 licenced centenarians among the 5.3 million drivers in New South Wales. Hunter Valley man Cyril Barwick has joined that exclusive group. At age 100, Mr Barwick is still behind the wheel of his beloved blue van — a vehicle he has driven for more than 30 years. He has held a licence for 64 years without one single mishap on the road. He leaves home almost every day of the week and frequents all the cafes and restaurants in his local area. (On the subject of driving and centuries ... someone once said - “the turn of the century ... was probably made by a woman driver” ... but it may have been a rumour.)

LUKE AND HILLARY GARDNER never have a problem remembering each other’s birthday. After all, the husband and wife were born the same day. But what makes their story so amazing is that their new baby son was born on the day the couple were to celebrate their 27th birthday. Using a smartphone app Hilary Gardner calculated a due date of December 15, three days before their joint birthday. Her obstetrician called it for Dec. 19. The US couple got in some exercise to try to hurry the baby up a bit. The night of December 17 they went walking around the parking lot at First Baptist Church of Baldwyn, where Gardner is outreach pastor. Whether or not the exercise sped things up, Cade was born at 10:01 a.m. on Dec. 18 — exactly 27 years after his parents’ birthdate. The odds of that happening are about one in 133,000. The chance of meeting someone born the same day as you is one in 365. The chance of two people being born on the same day and having a baby on their birthday is about 7.5 in a million which comes to about one in 133,000. (I think we’ll leave it there. That’s enough stats for one day.)

JANUARY IS THE TIME OF YEAR people usually make New Year’s resolutions to swear off foods rich in calories. Brisbane man Steve Humphreys is doing the opposite - he is devoting his year to seeking out the city’s best meat pie. The forensic accountant has vowed to eat up to two each week to work his way through to the top. He has already begun blogging his quest, the same way he did throughout 2015 when he searched for the city’s best chicken parmigiana. There is a strict list of criteria for each pie Mr Humphreys’ tries - taste, quality of mince and gravy, quality of pastry, the size, temperature, and price will all be considered and critiqued. They have to be plain mince pies, come from within Brisbane’s city limits, and must be eaten without sauce. He says he’s aiming for one to two a week. About every three months he’ll name the current best and the current top five.(Couldn’t he come up with a healthier alternative? Perhaps Brisbane’s best lettuce sandwich? Maybe the best lentil soup? Nah - for the blokes - ‘best meat pie’ is more challenging.)

GIANT, DECADENT AND COMPLETELY O V E R - T H E - T O P MILKSHAKES are the secret to one Ipswich cafe thriving in its first year of business. Made with plenty of lollies, sprinkles, cream and more, 116 Laneway cafe’s signature

milkshakes were the point of difference the new business needed to see its first anniversary. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 60% of small businesses find the first few years the most difficult, a trend these signature milkshakes are helping to buck. Along with Nutella Tim Tam and caramel popcorn varieties, 116 Laneway cafe’s milkshakes appeal to the the young and young-at-heart customer and are the sweet success of the business.(Ok ... here’s what I want to know. What happened to the famous ‘malt’ ingredient? As a kid it was always a ‘Malted Milk Shake’. Let’s have a chocolate malt, a strawberry or lime ‘malted’ milk? and for the best malted milk/milk shake - I recommend it’s made in a stainless steel cup.)

5Jocks’ Journal published by Newmedia. www.newmedia.com.au

Vaughn Bennison - 7RPH7RPH is a community radio station that provides a reading and information service for those people who, for various reasons, cannot see, handle or understand material in print. Hobart was the first RPH station in Australia. They began in June 1982 and are now part of the Australia-wide RPH network. Jocks’ Journal editor Greg Newman dropped by and met up with Station Manager Vaughn Bennison at their studio in Davet St Hobart.

Jocks’ Journal: Where did life begin for you Vaughan?Vaughn: I was born in New Zealand at Hawkes Bay which is bottom of the North Island in 1975. I moved to Australia .30 years ago this year

Have you always had a passion for radio since you were young? - My mother asked me when I was 5 what I wanted to be and I said a radio announcer - not a disc jockey. So I suppose it waned a little bit in my teenage years and once I went to uni I got bit disillusioned with radio, and then coming to Brisbane I suppose it got even worse and I gave up on the idea of working in radio except at least being an announcer my preference was being in the back room pushing buttons - production is probably my first love and building audio content.

Were people encouraging you to get into radio? Or did others think with your handicap - to avoid a career in radio? - A bit of both. I did some studies at uni and one was on the accessibility of radio playout software for people who are blind and the other one was on similar lines but what it enabled me to do was to go and have look at a few stations. People were not so much saying don’t get into radio because you are blind, they were saying don’t get into radio because it is hard work and you really have to push. I frankly didn’t have the drive for it, not in that arena. I had done some work previously and continue to do work with community radio such as 2NCR in Lismore in Northern NSW and I moved on to do production work and announcing with 4RPH in Brisbane. People were encouraging me to get behind the microphone but that wasn’t particularly what I enjoyed doing. I had to cultivate the ability to do that because so much of what I was doing was predicated on my ability to deliver spoken word content and I am a trained vocal performer. I did a lot of work on learning to speak coherently and deliver radio content.

The real serious radio stuff began in Brisbane?I worked at 4RPH 1296AM from around the middle of 1998 until I left Brisbane in 2012. I happened to be at an RPH conference in Sydney and I met a couple of people who worked at 4RPH and they told me one of their producers was going on holiday and I happened to be going to Brisbane at that time because my wife is from Brisbane and I said to them - “well hey I will be looking for something to do. It’s either that or hang with my in-laws and I would love to help you with some production.” At that time they were using all analogue gear which is what I grew up with. I think the most digital thing we had was a mini disc digital recorder, actually we did have a CD player. When I moved to Brisbane at the end of ‘98 I was full time so to speak. I joined a board of the association a year later and I served as vice president for somewhere close to 4 years until we had our first child and then I had to pull back because I was the primary carer for our kids so what I did was still continue doing production there.

I also started doing some production work from home and I ran for some years a program for people who are blind and vision impaired in Queensland called ‘Look Around’ and I did that all from home. Normally I would take it on a 5 inch reel or a mini disc but on occasion I did actually email it through especially when time was tight so that was sort of my first foray into getting into digital production and internet program delivery. I did that off and on right up until 2012 and all the while I was doing announcing as well. My favourite shift used to be the breakfast shift, I used to do the Thursday and Friday 6-8 shift and we would read the Courier Mail and then we would go on to read The Australian and I did that shift for about 7 years.

Then a move to Tasmania, how did that come about?I saw through my contacts that they were advertising a position down here and I thought well I needed something to do and I threw my hat in the ring so to speak and got the job. We had a couple of interviews and I got called down to do an interview and really liked the place and ended up getting the job and moved down 3 months later and I have been down here with my wife and two children nearly 5 years.

Dare I say your wife probably in the first winter said - ‘can we go back to Queensland?’- Ah yeah she doesn’t like the winter very much but has got used to it now. Interestingly enough my mother and her partner have just come from NZ and they are complaining how cold it is.

How much do you have in the way of locally produced programs and local content? - We deliver about 66 hours a week of our own programming, and we consider our broadcast period to be 112 hours a

week because midnight till 8am is taking the BBC overnight. We broadcast 16 hours a day of content as I said 66 hours a week is our own local content that our volunteers provide. The rest comes from some sponsored programming. We have very little sponsored programming. We have programs that we share from our other RPH stations across the country such as the RPH stations in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and Adelaide.

HOW OLD IS YOUR TOASTER? A man has shared a video of his grandparents’ a 58-year-old toaster that still functions in daily use. Michael Asher’s video, posted to YouTube shows Asher’s grandparents’ kitchen, where he and his grandmother are regarding her old toaster. Asher’s grandma says the toaster was a wedding gift 58 years ago and still sees daily use. Asher notes the cord is cut into sections that are cobbled together from other power cords due to the toll that time took on the kitchen appliance. Asher tests out the toaster by using it to perfectly toast a couple of slices of bread.(And let’s share a toast to Charles Strite! For he was the one who came up with first automatic pop-up toaster, which ejects the toast after toasting it. It was patented by Mr Strite in 1921.)

IKEA HAS CALLED ON TEENAGERS to stop hiding in its stores after closing time. The trend appears to have been started in August by two Belgian teenagers who filmed themselves hiding in a wardrobe and coming out into the store after it had closed. The pair posted the video on YouTube, where it has been viewed more than 1.7 million times. Since then, about 10 illegal sleepovers have taken place across the globe, including Australia. Most recently, two 14-year-girls in Sweden avoided charges after being caught in the store after hours. (I think they should introduce suitable punishments for these unwanted overnight guests. Forget fines or jail ... give them a punishment they’ll never forget - like trying to assemble a large multi-level wardrobe with a 40 page instruction manual or an 8 piece outdoor dining setting that comes in 22 boxes ... that’ll teach ‘em!)

CHINA HAS FINALLY PRODUCED ITS OWN FULLY HOME-PRODUCED BALLPOINT PEN after years of trying to master the complex techniques involved in making the delicate tips. Despite manufacturing 80% of the world’s ballpoint pens, the country had previously been unable to produce the small but crucial component. Now a state-owned steel firm has announced it has finally cracked it. So why did a country renowned for ingeniously replicating technology struggle to create an everyday item for so long? Firstly, it did not have machines with the precision needed to cut a tiny ball-bearing accurately, meaning the balls had to be imported from Switzerland. And despite being the world’s largest steel producer, China was unable to produce the high quality steel to case the ink-dispensing ball, resulting in the steel being imported from Germany or Japan.(Gosh where would we be without pens in 2017? I still keep a few beside my computer. They’re great if you have an itchy ear or can’t find a spoon to stir your coffee. Good on ya China!)

BOB RENPHREY HATES FRIDAY THE 13TH! He has decided to stay in bed every subsequent Friday the 13th because of a spate of bad luck he’d suffered on that unlucky day, such as: walking through a plate glass door, getting made redundant, falling into a river, writing off four cars and putting his wife in the hospital after hitting her in the head with a stick meant for the dog. After he died in 1998 his funeral was on (you guessed it) Friday the 13th. (The good news for Bob is - there is only one Friday the 13th left in 2017 and that’s in October.)

How many volunteers are involved? - About 85, each of whom comes in sometimes once a week, sometimes 2 or 3 times a week and sometimes once a month. They do a number of different roles, it’s not like most community stations where we have got lots and lots of announcers. We have people who come in and do production so we term production as simply recording, editing and building the audio content. Nigel Green (pictured) is our Wednesday presenter from 1-3pm. He also provides information on TV guides. We have regular presenters and they are the people who are the main force behind delivering the programme whether that is somebody who compilles all the data and reads it or whether they are the person who operates the console and delivers the programme live to the listener and we have people who simply are readers and they come in and are people who are really good at reading aloud and they come in and get the written content and they read it.

As a radio listener is there any one in particular that you really enjoyed listening to in radio that you mentored or admired?- It has been such a long time since I spent a lot of time listening to radio to be honest. My one foray into regular radio program presenting is a program that I do for blind citizens in Australia called New Horizons and it’s a 15 minute weekly program for blind and vision impairment issues and the guy who started that program is Neville Kerr and he was a terrific broadcaster and he is very much someone that I have admired over the years.

Away from radio - what do you like do on the weekend?- I am an avid vintage, hi fi and audio collector. I love to collect records, record players, cassette decks, reel to reel machines and all of those sorts of things. I am also an amateur radio enthusiast and I have a licence and apart from that reading books and that’s about all I have in spare time for at the moment and music I suppose.
