Jocks’ Journal: I’m talking with Heidi Everett who is the General Manager of the Radio Training Institute - ACE Radio Network. I’m at their headquarters in South Melbourne and tonight’s class is just about to commence. Heidi is heating up a chocolate pudding as we have a quick chat about her role and the school. Heidi, tell us about what’s happening tonight at radio school?Heidi: I have got my night advanced students back. They were on work experience last week so they’ve been into a lot of commercial regional stations around Victoria and they’re now back and we’re doing a whole lot of career stuff and they’ve got a guest lecturer coming in. We are getting into the wrap-up part of the course, all the career side of things.

If you commit yourself to the course, how long should it take you before you might step into a full time radio career? - About 20 weeks, so it works out to about 5 months. You’re here either 2 days a week or 2 nights a week, plus you’re adding in studio time and work experience and bits and pieces on top of that. It’s almost full time in the educational side of things.

You’ve been involved with the school pretty much the beginning haven’t you?- Yeah, since ACE bought it out which was in I think, end of 2002 early 2003 roughly. I started soon after, so I’m coming up to close to 14 years.

The school was originally owned and founded by Gary Mac? - Correct, yes.

You realise Heidi, you could’ve been doing a gig on say a NOVA or maybe heading an ACE network breakfast show - yet you’ve decided to stay on and teach, has this been your passion?- Yeah, I just really like working with the students to be honest. I’ve got a bit of a social work/welfare background in terms of some of my other worlds out there. I just love working with students and working with them through that process or that sort of journey between coming here as a nervous little student, young or old, and coming out of the course a lot more confident and obviously a lot more highly skilled. I just enjoy that process as well as working with them ongoing after they’ve finished the course as well.

Jocks’ Journal Interview with Heidi Everett

(General Manager) Radio Training Institute

(Melb)

You come from a rich radio background. Have you always had this passion, did you grow up saying ‘Dad, I want to get into radio?’- I think I just kind of fell into it to be honest, I remember the phone call with Dad (Stephen Everitt) ringing me saying ‘We’ve just bought a radio school, we need a hand’ - and that was literally it. I was doing other things, studying elsewhere, so I fell into it a little bit but obviously it’s not a huge surprise seeing Dad’s history in radio and that a lot of my family has been involved in media or advertising so its probably in the blood I think.

Radio has changed particularly since 2000. My friend Phil who drove me here today made an observation, he said - ‘Are there any jobs still in radio?’ There’s a lot of networking, but there are other types of jobs now like running a station website, imaging producers etc. So what do you say to people who are saying - ‘are there many jobs in radio?’- It’s a valid point and it’s one question I get a lot. There is certainly a lot of jobs out there but you’re right it has shifted, so there’s a lot of new roles coming up and a lot of those come into that online content, digital content, social media umbrella. That’s sort of where it’s going. Radio is not just about audio anymore there’s a huge visual aspect to consider. There are lots of new roles that we haven’t seen before that have been popping in the last 5 or so years and I think that’s where a lot of the growth area is.

Somebody comes to you and they’re say 30, 40 maybe 44 - do you turn them away and say ‘Sorry, you need to be younger’? Is there a cut off age?- No, I don’t think so. Our students vary in age. I think we’ve got age 16 up until 60. This industry seeks diverse background of people, ages, cultures etc. and we get students employed right across the full age bracket.

Well this course is locked in - but if any of our readers or their friends wish to do the next course when does that commence?- We’ve got the next one coming on May 8th, it’s a night intake and then a day intake in July 3 I think off the top of my head. Jocks’ Journal Fun FilesBRITAIN’S BIGGEST FAMILY have announced they’re expecting their 20th child. Sue Radford, 42, and husband Noel, 46, star in the reality TV show 19 Kids and Counting. They welcomed their youngest baby, daughter Phoebe Willow, last July. They’d previously vowed not to have any more children. The new baby has 10 brothers and 9 sisters. The family live in a former care home in Lancashire, and use a minibus to get around. Mr and Mrs Radford have raised their family without benefits and own a bakery. The couple had their first baby when Mrs Radford first fell pregnant with Chris when she was aged 14. (Meanwhile in Australia ... we have the Bonells who have 16 children. Jeni and husband Ray, Bonell live with their kids in Toowomba, Queensland. They have seven bedrooms ... and hopefully several bathrooms.)

A MAN HAS BEEN DUBBED THE ‘ORNIMATOR’ for filling his entire home with $AU100,000 worth of bizarre ornaments. Eccentric Lawrence Cobbold, 43, has filled his home, three sheds and a garage with 20,000 items of bric-a-brac - and he doesn’t plan to stop there. The obsessive collector - who started his hobby 30 years ago - even moved to a new house so he could have more room his ever expanding collection. And he even has to cook and clean at his parents’ home because he has no room in his own place. In total, Lawrence has around 14,000 thimbles, 2,000 paperweights, 1,000 fridge magnets and about 300 plates. He has also collected hundreds of pictures, mugs and jigsaws, all connecting in some way to birds. Lawrence’s dad Tony used to keep about 300 live canaries and budgies and thinks that could be where his son’s interest with birds started.(Well at least Lawrence’s birds are all ornaments - or else like his Dad - he’d have one enormous bird seed bill.)

DOGS LOVE TO CHEW ALL MANNER OF THINGS. But when they start to ingest non-edible items such as socks, underwear or even rocks, something can inevitably become stuck. The eating of substances that have no nutritional value is a disorder known as pica, and it is common among puppies and certain dog breeds such as labradors and dachshunds. “A dog’s sense of smell is up to 10,000 times better than ours, so they’re just attracted to everything,” Canberra vet Michael Archinal said. Some dogs are just perpetually hungry. eg Labradors, from the day they’re born to the day they die, want to eat something. Dr Archinal says: “Genetically they’ve got three genes that don’t switch off when they’ve had a meal, so they’re constantly hungry and will eat anything given the chance. Dr Archinal said in some cases, such as when a dog had eaten socks or underwear, they could support the animal with pain relief and fluids. (Just remember - if your dog eats a clock or a watch ... it could be because he wants to simply pass the time.)

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU WISH TO SPREAD FIRM BUTTER? An easy go-to method for many of us is to bung our butter in the microwave for a few seconds. Well, Food & Wine magazine conducted an experiment and tested three different processes. The first was to leave the butter out. The second, however, involved filling a glass jug with boiling water, leaving it for five minutes, then pouring the water away before covering the stick of butter with the jug face down for about 20 minutes. This did the trick nicely, though the butter was still a little firm in the centre. The third method is real easy. Put the butter under your armpit for 20 minutes. As the experiment showed, it worked as well as the hot jug method. This is because, at 37.5-38 C, the armpit is considered to be the warmest external part of your body. So you can see why this way is quicker than leaving it out. Going forward, if you do decide to soften your butter under you arm, the experts advise people to put the butter in a freezer bag before sticking it under your armpit. (A word of advice. If you do try method No 3 and your family complains that their bread smells like B.O ... maybe it’s wise to go back to method No 1 or 2.)

INVERIE IN SCOTLAND is officially the UK’s most remote location. When locals want a takeaway, their options are very limited. They’re non-existent, actually. Pizza brand Chicago Town decided to help out. The company flew in a chest full of frozen pizzas by way of a helicopter – the easiest way to access Inverie. The ferry, the only other way to reach the island, takes a little longer. You can technically get to the village by land, but there aren’t any roads. It’s also quite cold. Chicago Town dropped the pizza on a local field, not far from the local pub and the area’s hotel. Inverie, in west Scotland, is described as “Britain’s last wilderness”. There are just 120 residents. There’s one postcode for the whole community. Aside from the Old Forge pub, and hotel, Inverie has just two shops and a Post Office. Chicago Town company said it’s going to continue delivering to Inverie. (It’s not quite takeaway - more like a food-drop ... and it is frozen ... and it’s unlikely they will have a two for Tuesday offer ... but I don’t think the folk at Inverie are going to complain.)

DOGS WITH A SWEET TOOTH can finally satisfy their ice cream cravings - at the Don Paletto parlor in Mexico City. The parlor offers a variety of frozen cone and lollipop treats especially made for the animals. Made of natural yogurt and lactobacilli bacteria, it can help digestion while normal ice cream can cause pain and diarrhea in dogs, according to the shop owner, who said the food is also safe for humans. Flavours such as “Gentleman” and “Lucky Lucky” are advertised on the shop’s board, where the pets lick the treats off a stick, a cone or out of a bowl. (Well if I opened up an ice cream shop for dogs - I think I’d have different names to Gentleman and Lucky Lucky. How about an Old Sandshoe Sundae or a Bone-Flavoured Vanilla Delight?)

THE WORLD’S OLDEST PERSON, Emma Morano, has died in Italy at the age of 117. Emma was officially the last person born in the 1800s still living. Her life not only spanned three centuries but also survived an abusive marriage, the loss of her only son, two World Wars and more than 90 Italian governments. She had attributed her longevity to her genetics and a diet of three eggs a day, two of them raw.(But here’s the bit of info that you better not pass onto your young kids ... her doctor of 27 years, Carlo Bava, said that she rarely ate vegetables or fruit!)

4LM Mt Isa Weekday Breakfast

Radio training - Life. I knew what was coming, I collected lots of stories. ;)

Former stations - I started as a Promotions Manager in Mackay at 4MK FM and HOT FM then 4HI in Emerald for my first time on air doing Miners Overnight. I moved on to doing the breakfast show at 4LM in Mount Isa (I didn’t look on the map). I had a year away from Mount Isa and joined the Sales team with SCA in Townsville plus I did casual shifts on 4TO FM but if I’m going to be honest, let’s just say sales wasn’t my forte so when the opportunity arose to go back to Mount Isa and get back in a studio full time, I took it and here I’ve been since.

A memory of your first day on air - My immediate moment touching the panel is it because the girl I was taking over from had not turned up (let’s just say she was napping on the couch) so I was sitting there alone after only having watched her a couple of nights but not actually having done anything, waiting for the news to come down the satellite channel with no log in front of me because we loaded as we went. I was shaking so bad but I got there and so did she eventually! I learnt straight up I can swim!!

Radio mentor – or someone you greatly admire on radio- 16 years in for me so there are quite a few people I now admire in this industry but I have to give it to the person for where it started - Steve Price in Townsville. On 4TO FM. I grew up listening to Pricey and to be perfectly honest, for what was sometimes a sh** and lonely childhood at times, Pricey was this guy who made me smile and made my days a little brighter! That’s what made me love radio!

Childhood ambition - I wanted to be an actress but when I asked my mother if I could do drama classes she told me I was dramatic enough. Shut down!

Career choice if not in radio - Psychology interests me immensely although I don’t know if it’s a good sign when I struggle to remember how to spell it.

Normal sleeping hours - I’m rarely in bed before midnight then up at 4:30am. I’m a night owl by nature.

A normal weekday breakfast (as in food/coffee) - I can’t eat breakfast. Coffee is it for me but I must have that!

A favourite concert -Weirdly, I have to give it to Meshell Ndegeocello, who I saw in a nightclub in Vancouver and it’s always stuck with me. “If that’s your boyfriend, he wasn’t last night”. Funky and sassy as! I’ve missed out on seeing some big artists due to location but love live music as long as I don’t have to bang my head to it.

A song you wish you could play on radio ... and not play- Lydia Highly Suspect… Love this band and if I never had to hear Grandma’s Feather Bed by John Denver again….. seriously, I don’t even know what old crack that one creeps out from.

A favourite movie - Sitting still is a bit tricky so I don’t watch many movies… that’s why I read. You have to sit still and concentrate, you can’ start doing other things! I’ll go with The Usual Suspects though if I have to think on my feet (no not sitting still pun intended) because it’s clever and it tricked me and I love that in a movie.

A favourite book - I can’t pick a favourite. I read a lot. Nothing overly intellectual. I love Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson, Tami Hoag, Karin Slaughter - Thrillers!

Last time you laughed till it hurt - It wasn’t today when I thought I’d cut my toe off… that just hurt! I know I was crying and piggy snorting at something recently and I’m not sure if it was The Big Bang Theory or the dog on the swing on Facebook.

A pet peeve - To pick one thing, it has to be people who cannot pull their heads out of their phones when they are in company.

Passions outside of radio (apart from family) - Gym. It’s my absolute sanity! And my dogs. I would take them everywhere with me if I could. It’s ridiculous how much I love them.

Are you a collector? - I actually have a lot of toys in my studio but due to my nature, a ‘collector’ as such… NO. I hate clutter. I don’t hoard anything. Except my albums but that’s only because I have them stashed at Dads.

Place of birth and birthdate - Hobart Tasmania (but I’m a QLD coastal girl to the core) 5 June 1972 (this upcoming one is making me a little breathless occasionally but I’m thinking gifts could ease that…. of botox especially… feel free to send vouchers c/o the station).
