During the Holocaustmany ar t ists spokeout, trying to stop thedestruction of theirsociety. Two of themwere musician/composer ViktorUllmann and his

colleague librettist Peter Kien. Their satiricopera “Der Kaiser von Atlantis, oder Die Tod-Verweigerung” (“The Emperor of Atlantis, orDeath’s Refusal”) was composed around1943 while Ul lmann and Kien wereimprisoned in Theresienstadt. The one-actopera “Der Kaiser von Atlantis” wasrehearsed in Theresienstadt in March 1944.The Nazi authorities, however, understoodthe depiction of the Emperor as a satire onAdolf Hitler and refused to allow the opera’sperformance.

For this Colorado premiere, the co-producerswill expand the experience of the opera, creating a preface and an epilogue, featuring

both traditional Eastern European klezmermusic and an orchestral score seamlesslyintegrating a world premiere dance andcreating new communities of hope. Thedance will be choreographed by BNC’sGarrett Ammon and set to music by Ofer Ben-Amots, Israeli born composer and Chair ofthe Music Department of Colorado College.
