Newman Mission Statement “cor ad cor loquitur” The Newman Catholic Center includes the students, faculty and staff at the University of Massachusetts and extended community.
Empowered by the Spirit and inspired by .John Henry Newman’s motto: “Heart speaks to Heart” we explore, believe and reach out inclusively to make Jesus Christ present to all who share their journey with us.
Newman Vision Statement The Newman Catholic Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst provides a safe, comfortable, and caring community in which students can
grow spiritually, form new relationships, and deepen the rich traditions of their Catholic Faith. As Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman desired, we put the Catholic faith to work in conjunction with students’ secular education. We offer encouragement in worship and study, aid in the development of lead-ership skills, and facilitate in building a faith community that provide lasting memories. Through the sharing of meals and prayers that sustain the body, mind and spirit, we create a “home away from home” environment that helps to break social barriers while supporting each other in the growth and un-
derstanding of the faith. We act as models to those around us through our commitment to God, Church and Community.

Flowers for the Easter Season
We have 50 days to celebrate Easter and it is difficult for Newman to provide fresh flowers throughout the entire season for the altar. If you would like to purchase flow-
ers and have it placed on the altar, we would be most grateful. If you would like to memorialize the flowers we
can make note of it in the bulletin. Thank you so much for making our chapel look so
spring-like and beautiful!

Faith In Action: Incorporating the Gospel Message Into our Everyday Lives
Collection: April 5, 2015
The Offertory for last weekend was: $4,952.00
The description of the young Church as vibrant and confi-dent in the First Reading is almost the opposite of the open-ing scene in today’s Gospel where the disciples are locked away in fear. They are all afraid until they see Jesus and are
given the gift of his peace. Poor Thomas missed the big meeting and wouldn’t take other people’s word for it.
Thomas had a hard time believing that they saw Jesus. May-be he had gotten tired of hoping. Maybe his heart was just
too broken by losing Jesus. We can all be like that—each of us has a “Thomas part” to our personality. When we’re
hurt or feeling left out or when other people’s faith is stronger than ours, it can be hard to see God. It can be hard to believe in mercy. It can be hard to have hope. This Sun-day’s readings show us how the presence of Jesus and the strength drawn from community helped move those early
Christians—and helps move us—from fear to joy.
Easter! Resurrection and new life; a new life shared from an earthen tomb. This
has been the meaning of life for Christian people for two thousand years. There is nothing more secure, nothing more lasting. Come and share the thrill of
proclaiming this truth through your life as a priest or religious. Call Fr. Gary Dailey at 413 452-0816 or

St. Francis’ Environmental Corner Ecology and Spirituality:
A Call to Action
In a recent talk Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, outlined four themes of the pope’s teachings on integral ecology: • The call to be protectors is integral and all-embracing • Care for creation and humanity are virtues in their
own right • We will -- we must -- care for what we cherish and
revere • A need for dialogue and “a new global solidarity,”
where all have a part to play “We are called to protect and care for both creation and
the human person,” he said in describing the first principle. “These concepts are reciprocal and, together,
they make for authentic and sustainable human development.”
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Registration for Religious Education is now open for the
2015-2016 school year. Forms can submitted or download-ed from the Newman Center website. For questions please
