MissionMission: The mission of Newlane University is: "To make quality online higher education accessibleto anyone on earth."

Our Learning Principles:

Newlane University is an online university that combines the best of contemporary learning theory withthe abundant high quality instructional materials available today. The Newlane experience is orientedaround discrete and clear learning objectives that have been carefully aligned with those in comparablecourses and programs at respected universities. While we strive to provide excellent instructionalresources for every objective, students are also free to consult other resources as well--at Newlane, theaim is to master the learning objectives, not to spend time listening to a lecture, or consuminginstructional media.

Demands of Programs:

Newlane Degree programs are rigorous academic programs, requiring students to master college-levelconventions in writing, critical thinking, research, and documentation. Newlane programs arecompetency-based. This means that students pass courses only as they demonstrate mastery of thecourse goals and objectives, not just for spending time in the course. Accordingly, each course has a“course hearing” where a student meets in a live video conference with an expert. During these coursehearings, the expert asks open-ended questions and spot checks to verify and approve that the studenthas mastered all the course goals and objectives, or not yet. Students should expect to spend two yearsin full time study to complete the Associate of Arts degree, and an additional two years in full time study tocomplete the Bachelor of Arts degree.

The 300-level courses assume the content-knowledge and skills students gain in the 100- and 200-levelcourses. And the expectations for projects are higher for more advanced courses (both in quality andquantity). That is, students in advanced-level courses are expected to write longer papers, and thestandards for written work are higher. Expert reviewers reference a philosophy paper course project rubricthat conveys the differentiated expectations across course-levels.

The Bachelor’s degree is structured around several “sequences” of courses. To complete Newlane’sBachelor of Arts in Philosophy degree, students must complete the general education requirement(typically through completing the Associate of Arts in General Studies degree) plus the Philosophy majorIntroduction sequence. The introduction sequence is composed of two 100-level courses, and two200-level courses. Once students complete this sequence, they must complete the Foundationssequence. The Foundations sequence includes one 200-level course, and three 300-level courses. Oncestudents complete the Foundations sequence, they can complete the remaining courses in whateverorder they prefer. The remaining required sequence is the Core sequence. The Core sequence includesthree 300-level courses. Beyond the Core sequence, students must complete twelve credits of advancedphilosophy course work. This can include six credits for their Capstone project, if they so desire.

Here are the philosophy major courses organized around these different sequences (it’s the samerequired courses and credit hours as described above, just organized around sequences rather than bymajor area):

Capstone ProjectsThe Capstone Project is an extended study available at the end of the Bachelor’s degree program (it isnot available for an Associate degree) in which students pursue independent research on a question orproblem of their choice, engage with the scholarly debates in the relevant disciplines, and – with theguidance of an advisor – produce a substantial paper, or presentation in another media that reflects adeep understanding of the topic.

The Newlane University degree capstone project challenges students to synthesize what they havelearned across their degree course work. This does not mean that the project must incorporate ideas fromeach course, but it should be a more developed work than a course project that represents that thestudent has “digested” from a wider range of courses.

Students are strongly encouraged to choose a topic in which they have some competence based on theiracademic work, professional experience, or exploration of future career options. The Capstone Project isboth a valuable intellectual experience and also a vehicle through which students can demonstrate theirresearch, analytical, and writing skills to either prospective employers or graduate and professionalschools.

Note: Completion of a Capstone Project may not be required for every degree at Newlane.

Capstone Framework & Guidelines

A Capstone Project must demonstrate the following characteristics. Each characteristic can be satisfied indifferent ways depending on the topic, discipline, and the approach taken. But, taken together, theyrepresent the capstone framework.

Originality: You must reach your own deep understanding of a clearly defined and focused topic. Youmust formulate your own perspective on an issue and draw your own conclusions. The final project andform of presentation can also draw upon your originality and creativity.

Independence: Although you will have a capstone advisor as a guide and domain expert, you will workprimarily on your own.

Appropriate Scope: The Capstone Project is equivalent to a six-credit course. Therefore, you shouldplan to spend at least as much time and energy on your Capstone Project as you have devoted to yourmost challenging courses. As a project equivalent to a six-credit course, the capstone project should bewithin a limited and realistic scope (for example, most courses at Newlane are 3 credits, you shouldexpect to complete your capstone project within the same time frame that you would complete twocourses–this is not a book-length project, neither is it a project like other course projects.

Orderly & Objective Process of Inquiry: The Capstone Project demonstrates your facility with themethods of inquiry. These include the ability to ask the right questions, to synthesize ideas, to identify anduse evidence, to draw and support conclusions, to recognize compelling research, to communicate yourideas, or to solve a problem using a specific set of tools.

Intellectual Stretch: The Capstone Project should take you to a place where you have not been before, and perhaps did not even think you could reach.

Capstone Project Learning Outcomes:

While capstone projects can vary in terms of the content, media, framework, etc. All capstone projectsshould reflect the following learning outcomes:

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 42

Page 43: Newlane University Course Catalog Newlane Academic Year ...

● Integrate and apply degree coursework learning in a concrete way on a topic of personal, academic, or professional interest.

● Showcase mastery of degree aims relevant to the project.● Conduct self-guided research, including sourcing, evaluating, and responding to resources

appropriate to the topic and scope of the project.● Appropriately draw and support conclusions.● Connect degree studies (content, frameworks, competencies, etc.) to “next landing”, whether that

is academic, professional, etc.● Create and present a tangible product for a public audience.

Checkpoints for completion: The Capstone project includes the following checkpoints to ensure you getproper feedback from experts while the project is in progress, and so you don’t spend an inordinateamount of time on a project, only to find out that it was ill-conceived, or not appropriate for one reason oranother.

Proposal: The degree capstone proposal is the first checkpoint. At this stage, you will meet with anadvisor who will help you determine an appropriate topic (related to both your major and your interests forthe project) and scope for your project (e.g., that it would be appropriate for six credit hours of advancedstudy, etc.).

Outline: The outline is the first checkpoint. While you don’t need to have your whole project figured out atthis stage, you’ll check in with an expert to verify that your proposed project is appropriate for a capstoneproject (in terms of the questions asked, the subject matter, scope, etc.), and how you anticipateconducting research and bringing your project to a conclusion.

Rough Draft: The Rough Draft is the second checkpoint. As a rough draft, it is entirely expected thatsome sections of your project will not be complete, and that you won’t have put final touches on theproject, but the rough draft should include one or more section that is nearing completion so that anexpert can gauge your ability to conduct appropriate research, pose and respond to appropriatequestions, and work towards conclusions appropriate for a capstone project. The rough draft should beinclude considerably more content than the outline, and should give the expert a rough idea of thedirections you’ll be taking toward your final project.

Draft for Final Feedback: The Draft for Final Feedback is the third checkpoint. At this point, the projectshould be nearing completion. The expert feedback may include feedback on formatting (e.g., for awritten project, this may be feedback on the works cited, bibliography, page numbering, etc.) orsubstantive critiques on sections of the project, etc.. This may mean that you’ll need to re-work sections ofyour project, or make formatting changes, etc. before submitting your final project.

Final Draft: The final draft is the final checkpoint, and brings in an additional expert to review the project. There will still be feedback, and possible critiques of the project, including the possibility that the projectwill not yet be accepted as fulfilling the criteria of a capstone project, depending on the shape the projecthas taken from the previous draft, how you have responded to earlier feedback, and also freshperspectives from the additional expert. The aim of the different checkpoints, including the finalcheckpoint, is to help the student better understand and engage the standards and conventions ofacademic work.

What Comes Next? A final approved capstone project will have been vetted by more than one expert, and demonstrate your expertise and ability to work independently on a project with appropriate scope.Students may consider using their capstone project as a launchpad, talking point, or writing (or creative)sample for graduate work, or may consider reaching out to appropriate forums (journals, exhibit spaces, etc.) for publication.

If it is not, the student may not enroll ina Newlane degree program.

**Once a student is admitted to Newlane, in order to enroll in a degree program, they must complete theinitiation sequence (two mini-courses) and introduction sequence (four regular courses) for their selecteddegree. Completing these sequences gives students an opportunity to experience the rigor of Newlanecourses, and online learning through the Newlane platform before committing to a degree program. Mostof the courses in these sequences are different for the Associate and Bachelor’s degree. Moreover, students need not repeat a course for the Bachelor’s degree if they have previously completed it duringthe Associate degree. To learn more about the Newlane degree programs, including the initiation andintroduction sequences, please visit the degree programs page.

See our Admissions Process here.

Newlane offers rolling enrollment. Once a student satisfies all the admissions and enrollment criteria, theycan enroll in a program at any time, and complete their coursework at their own pace and schedule, provided it meets the minimum satisfactory academic progress schedule.

Admissions ProcessNewlane has two admissions processes:

A registration process that grants admission to Newlane University learning and assessment resources, and allows students to take Newlane University courses for Newlane Academic Units (not credit hours).

And An enrollment process, that grants admission to a degree program.

We differentiate between the two processes so that students can experience how the Newlane platformworks as well as the rigor and expectations of Newlane coursework prior to enrolling in a degree program.Enrolling in a degree program involves a commitment to complete a more significant series of courses, and an agreement with higher stakes than the user agreement that applicants complete to becomeregistered students. A registered student is different from an enrolled student.

Prospective Newlane students begin as “Platform Applicants”. In order to register as a student, and gainaccess to Newlane learning and assessment resources and take Newlane University courses for NewlaneAcademic Units, students must complete the registration process. This process includes all the followingmilestones:

Newlane registration process:

● Student verifies they are 18+ years.

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 45

Page 46: Newlane University Course Catalog Newlane Academic Year ...

● Student verifies that they have required technology.● Student verifies that they have completed secondary school.● Student verifies that they speak English at secondary school level or higher.● Student uploads gov’t ID.● Student signs User Agreement.● Student pays registration fee.

Completing the above process makes the platform applicant a Registered Student. As a registeredstudent, student has access to Newlane courses and assessment resources. They can earn NewlaneAcademic Units, but they can’t yet earn credit hours or a degree.

Once a registered student, in order to enroll in a degree program, the student must complete theenrollment process. This process includes all the following milestones:

Newlane enrollment process:

● If they didn’t as part of the registration process, student provides evidence of completingsecondary school (high school) or equivalent. Suitable evidence includes: an official high schooltranscript*, a copy of a recognized high school diploma, a high school equivalency transcript(GED, TASC Test scores etc.) etc., or an official college transcript from an accredited university.

● Students for whom English is a second language, provide evidence of meeting our Englishproficiency standards.

● Student verifies they meet the Newlane residency requirements.View Newlane residencyrequirements.

● Student completes the Initiation and Introduction Sequences for selected degree.● Student applies to degree program.● Student Receives Acceptance letter from Newlane (if meet all enrollment criteria)● Student signs Enrollment Agreement● Newlane representative countersigns enrollment agreement.

*Transcript must be in English. If a student has a transcript that is not in English, we ask that they have ittranslated by an approved transcript translation service. We accept English translations of officialtranscripts that are produced by National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES)-memberagencies. Upon receipt of the translated transcript, Newlane will review it to ensure that it is comparableto a U.S. high school degree or equivalent. If it is, we can accept the record as fulfilling that admissionscriteria (that the student has completed high school or equivalent). If it is not, the student may not enroll ina Newlane degree program.

Completing the above enrollment process makes the registered student an Enrolled Student. As anenrolled student, student can earn semester credit hours and can earn a degree through Newlane. AllNewlane Academic Units the student has earned are translated into credit hours in accordance with theNewlane clock/credit hour policy.

Here is the outline of both the registration and enrollment processes together:

Newlane registration process:

● Student verifies they are 18+ years.● Student verifies that they have required technology.● Student verifies that they have completed secondary school.● Student verifies that they speak English at secondary school level or higher.● Student uploads gov’t ID.● Student signs User Agreement.

Academic Progress PolicyNewlane Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy

Requirements for Maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP):

Newlane University monitors and evaluates academic progress for all enrolled students on a weeklybasis, and informs students of their progress status in regular student support emails. Newlane Universitymonitors and evaluates academic progress by drawing from student information such as the student’senrollment date, and number of courses completed to reach a progress rate and projected graduationdate.

The Newlane platform analytics and Newlane administration formally evaluates academic progress for allenrolled students annually. If a student is not making satisfactory academic progress at their annualevaluation, their student category may be proposed or changed (e.g., from “Full-time student” to“Part-time student”, or “Dismissed”). Once a student is dismissed, they no longer have access to theNewlane learning and mastery-verification platform and course work and Newlane no longer collects thestudent’s monthly tuition charge.

To maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), a student must meet ALL of the following standards:

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 47

Page 48: Newlane University Course Catalog Newlane Academic Year ...

1. Qualitative Standard: Mastering Course Goals and Objectives: Newlane Degree programsare rigorous academic programs, requiring students to master college-level conventions inwriting, critical thinking, research, and documentation. Newlane programs are competency-based.This means that students pass courses only as they demonstrate mastery of the course goalsand objectives, not just for spending time in the course. When a student passes a course atNewlane, this is expert-validated documentation that the student has demonstrated mastery of allthe course goals and objectives. Quality standards are built into the fabric of the Newlanelearning and mastery-verification platform. When students enroll in a Newlane degree program, they should understand this standard for passing each course, and commit to doing the work tomaster the course goals and objectives. Maintaining satisfactory academic progress involves, essentially, passing courses. And passing courses involves, essentially, mastering the coursegoals and objectives to the satisfaction of an expert in the discipline of the course.

2. Qualitative Standard: Do Over Rate Once students are enrolled in a degree program withNewlane, they have four free “do over” course hearings and course projects. A course hearing isa final oral exam with an expert in a live video conference during which the expert verifies that thestudent has mastered all the course goals and objectives, or not yet. A course project is anassessment prior to the course hearing. A course project is an opportunity for the student tosynthesize what they have learned in the course through some type of media form (e.g., a paper,a slideshow, a video, etc.). Each course hearing and course project has a rubric so students andexperts have a shared understanding of the expectations. Once a student is not approved to passany credit-bearing course, or course project, counseling and/or tutoring services are triggered.Ultimately the student should be demonstrating qualitative academic progress by satisfyingexperts that they have mastered the course goals and objectives.

After a student reaches four “do overs”, they are put on academic probation and must meet with anacademic advisor. Once a student is on academic probation, they are allowed four more free “do overs”.This amounts to an 80% approval rate on course hearings and projects. Once a student is on academicprobation for do overs, every time they successfully pass a combined four course projects and hearingswith no do overs, they are taken off probation and/or get an additional do over for a course project orhearing. They can be put back on probation once they exhaust any additional “do overs” they haveearned. While on probation, once a student has exhausted the four additional probationary “do overs”,and they receive another “do over” judgement, the student is dismissed. A student may appeal thedismissal by completing the SAP Appeal Form, and if the appeal is approved and the student isreinstated, they must pay $75 each for up to four additional “do overs”. This amounts to a 70% approvalrate. If a student exhausts the four additional paid “do overs”, and receives another “do over” judgment, they are dismissed. A student can get all allowable do over judgments across several projects and coursehearings, or for the same course project or hearing.

Note: The $75 assessment fee for each additional “do over” course hearing or project after a student isdismissed, appeals, and is reinstated is in addition to the $1500 tuition cost for the degree. So if a studenthad to do 9 “do over” course hearings (and no “do over” course projects) over the course of earning theirdegree, when they completed their degree, they would need to pay $1575 (We arrived at this number byadding the $1500 degree cost + $75 assessment cost for the 9th “do over” [the first 8 “do overs” arefree]). After the eight free “do overs”, students may have up to an additional four paid “do overs”, for atotal of twelve “do over” free + paid course hearings or course projects. The most a student would have topay for do overs is $300 (that is, $75 X 4). If a student is asked to do-over another course project orhearing after they have used up all 12 do-overs, they are dismissed from their program.

The Do Over Rate applies to the Associate degree and Bachelor’s degree completion. That is, a studenthas eight free do overs for the Associate degree, and if they continue on to the Bachelor’s degree, their

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 48

Page 49: Newlane University Course Catalog Newlane Academic Year ...

do overs are renewed and they have eight more free do overs to complete the course work for theBachelor’s degree.

3. Quantitative Standard: Time to Graduate:

In order to meet the quantitative standard for satisfactory academic progress, students must beprogressing toward their degree according to their student category type (i.e., Full Time, Part Time). Therates for the different categories are detailed below:

Full Time: Full Time Students must complete 20 Credits per year minimum. For the degree credit hours inour offering, this means that students must complete the Associate of Arts degree (60 credits) within threeyears, and the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy degree (120 credits) within six years.

Part Time: Part Time Students must complete 3 Credits per one year minimum, up to six years for anAssociate of Arts Degree (60 semester credit hours), and up to ten years for a Bachelor of Arts inPhilosophy Degree (120 semester credit hours). This means that, although a student may complete onlythree credits in any given year, they continuously only complete three credits and stay enrolled. They onlyhave up to six years for the Associate degree or ten years for the Bachelor’s degree to complete theirwork.

Newlane University monitors and evaluates academic progress by drawing from student information suchas the student’s enrollment date, and number of courses completed to reach a progress rate andprojected graduation date. If the projected graduation date is before the latest graduation date for theirenrollment category, then they meet the Time to Graduate satisfactory academic progress standard. Forexample, for a Part Time student early on in the Associate degree program, their projected graduationdate must be before six years. For a Full Time student early on in the same program, their projectedgraduation date must be before three years. If their projected graduation rate is not before the latestgraduation date for the enrollment category, then they are not meeting this standard–though there issome flexibility early on in a student’s degree program as long as the student earns the minimum numberof credits per year for their enrollment category (see below under Quantitative Standard: Time toGraduate for minimum number of credits per year for different enrollment categories).

Students can change their enrollment category as many times as they like, though if they would like to beFull Time they must be adhering to the Time to Graduate standards associated with that category.

Once a student has passed the maximum time to complete their program according to their enrollmentcategory, they are dismissed from their degree program. A student may appeal the dismissal bycompleting the SAP Appeal Form.

4. Quantitative Standard: Credits to Graduate:

Students must complete a degree program under a maximum number of semester credit hours of nomore than 150% of the program’s advertised credit hours. The degrees offered at Newlane (TheAssociate of Arts, and the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy) are 60, and 120 semester credit hour degreeprograms (respectively). We closely monitor student progress toward their degree, and have a cap of 90credits for the Associate degree, and 180 credits for the Bachelor of Arts degree (this is equal to 150% ofthe advertised credit hours for each program). While Newlane doesn’t currently offer enough courses toenable students to earn 180 credits, we may by the time a student beginning now is nearing graduation,so this standard is provisional at the moment for the Bachelor’s degree, but should be kept in mind asstudents begin their studies. Newlane does currently offer enough courses for students to pass the cap of90 credits for the Associate degree.

SAP Monitoring and Appeals

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 49

Page 50: Newlane University Course Catalog Newlane Academic Year ...

Newlane monitors student academic progress weekly. If a student is not making SAP, they get a letterwarning them that they are not making SAP. Each year, Newlane formally reviews and determines eachstudent’s progress. Students who have not met all SAP standards will be notified in writing that they arenot making satisfactory academic progress. We closely monitor student progress during the year, andoffer escalating support services and messaging following our student support triggers and responses.

Changing student enrollment status

Full Time Students:

If a full time student who has been enrolled for the past 12 months but has not completed 20 credits in thepast 12 months, they are re-categorized as a Part Time student during the annual evaluation. Theyremain Part Time students until they are evaluated again during the next month’s review. If they havesuccessfully completed 20 credits in the past 12 months from that check in, they may be considered a FullTime student. Once a student’s category has been changed, they meet with an academic advisor todetermine what category the student desires. Regardless of the student’s desires, they must meet theSAP standards for their desired category to be so categorized.

Part Time Students:

If a part time student has been enrolled for the past 12 months but has not completed 3 credits in the past12 months, they are dismissed. In order to re-enroll, they would have to re-apply, and be accepted.

A student may appeal to SAP-triggered change in enrollment status decisions if there are extenuatingcircumstances that affected the student’s ability to make SAP. Examples of these include personal orfamily critical illness (both physical and mental), natural disaster impacting the student or family’s home, assault, etc. If an SAP appeal is approved, the student will be placed on SAP probation, and have 6months to satisfy the SAP criteria. To appeal, students must complete the SAP Appeal Form, whichallows a student to explain the situation, document circumstances, and triggers an Academic RecoveryPlan that the student makes together with an academic advisor. SAP Appeal Forms are reviewed by theDirector of Education, whose decision is final.

Satisfactory Academic Progress and Dismissal from a degree program

A student may be dismissed from a degree program for not making SAP. If a student is dismissed for notmaking SAP, in order to re-enroll, the student must re-apply and be accepted. SAP-related studentdismissal can be triggered in three ways:

1. If a student does not complete at least 3 credits within the past 12 months from the time of theannual evaluation, and hasn’t taken a leave of absence.

2. If a student uses up all eight free “do-over” course projects/hearings.3. If a student appeals their dismissal after using up all eight “do overs”, their appeal is accepted,

and they then use up the four additional paid “do overs”.

SAP and Transfer students:

The number of transfer hours accepted upon admission is used to calculate the student’s remainingeligibility under the 150% calculation (Quantitative Standard: Credits to graduate).

Students returning to college for a second undergraduate degree will be given 150% of stated credithours required for the second degree program.

For credits that are transferred, up to 75 percent of the degree credit requirements can be accepted, and, where applicable, up to 25% of the major credit requirements can be accepted. Transfer credit is notaccepted toward completion of a Capstone Project. Transfer credits will show as “Unspecified GeneralEducation” or “Unspecified Elective Credit” or “Transfer Credit”.

Transfer credit will be counted toward degree credit requirements, but will not be considered fordocumenting student mastery of degree outcomes (aims, goals or objectives).

Advanced Placement or CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams less than five years old withscores of three and above may also be considered for credit.

Courses designated as Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) or American Council on Education (ACE)recommended may also be considered for credit.

Transfer Credit Guidelines

The information recorded on the transfer credit evaluation becomes part of the student’s permanentrecord at Newlane University. Credits must meet the following requirements to be transferable:

● For credits to be transferable, they must be earned from an appropriately accredited college, university, or training institution which has received A.C.E. (American Council on Education)recommendation for college credit (or other similarly accredited institutions in other countries).

● Only transcripts in English will be considered for transfer credit. Newlane does not offertranslation services, but may consider an official transcript that has been translated by a certifiedagent.

● Newlane University accepts only grades of “C” or higher for transfer credit.● Due to advances in technology and changes in laws, some credits older than 3 years may not be

transferable.

*All credits are subject to review by the Education Director and may be approved or denied at theirdiscretion.

The student is responsible for requesting official transcripts from their previous college(s). Only officialtranscripts will be evaluated for possible transfer credits. Exceptions may be made if the school where thecredits were earned is no longer a going concern, or can’t be reached, or if obtaining an official transcriptis prohibitively difficult (e.g., the cost to obtain the transcript is prohibitively expensive, physicalappearance on campus is required and the student no longer resides near the school, etc.) Suchexceptions are reviewed and documented by the Education Director and may be approved or denied attheir discretion.

The Newlane University official transcript merely lists the total number of transfer credits awarded.Transfer grades are not included in the Newlane University transcript.

To apply for transfer credit, please provide the following:

● An official transcript from the institution where credits were earned. You may submit yourunofficial transcripts while waiting for the official ones to arrive in order to expedite the evaluationprocess. Download a transcript request form.

● Once your transfer credit evaluation is completed, an admissions advisor will provide you with adegree plan that outlines the courses for which you have earned transfer credit and those you willstill need to complete to earn your degree.

Life Experience and Transfer Credits

Newlane University does not currently award transfer credit for experiential learning. Most NewlaneUniversity students bring tremendous life experience and knowledge to the classroom—knowledge thatmay have been acquired both in and outside of the traditional classroom setting. We value anyknowledge and mastery students have gained, regardless of how or where they gained it. While NewlaneUniversity does not have a straight line life experience transfer credit option, students may review coursegoals and objectives to determine which they have mastered through their life experience and test out ofa course by demonstrating mastery of the course goals and objectives by completing the course exam, project, and hearing.

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 52

Page 53: Newlane University Course Catalog Newlane Academic Year ...

Transfer Credit Disclosure StatementAccepting course credit is up to the receiving institution. Newlane University cannot guarantee that creditsearned through Newlane University can or will transfer to another institution. It is the student’sresponsibility to determine whether credits, degrees, or certificates from Newlane University will transferto other institutions or meet employers’ training requirements. Likewise, acceptance of credit transfersfrom other institutions to Newlane University is determined by Newlane University, in its sole discretion. Ifyou would like to request that Newlane University review credits that you earned at a different institutionfor possible transfer to Newlane, please email: [email protected]

Grading PoliciesAll Newlane University degree programs are competency-based. This means that passing a course is justa matter of demonstrating that you have mastered all the course goals and objectives (or intendedlearning outcomes), and is not tied to time in the course, or any other factor. In order to pass a course, students must demonstrate mastery of all course goals and objectives by completing a course project, acomputer-scored exam and a course hearing–the course hearing is a live oral exam with an expert in avideo conference through our platform. During course hearings, experts ask open-ended questions to thestudent to verify that the student has mastered the course goals and objectives, or not yet. Students mustcomplete and pass a course hearing for every course.

When a student submits a project, Newlane provides prompt, fair, and consistent feedback, includingwhether the project is approved or not yet, and whether a student has passed a course or not.

Prompt: When a student submits a project, a Newlane faculty member (note: all faculty members eligibleto review a project or host a course hearing hold an advanced degree in a relevant field for the course)confirms with the student within two working days that they (the faculty member) agree to review it andthey inform the student when they (the student) can expect to receive feedback (within one week).

When a student participates in a course hearing, the hosting faculty member provides feedback at theend of the hearing, including whether the student has passed the course or not yet.

Fair and Consistent: In order to assess fairly and consistently, Newlane faculty use rubrics in evaluatingcourse projects and student mastery in course hearings. In order for a student’s project to be approved, the faculty evaluator must judge that the project fulfills all the rubric criteria for the project. In order for astudent to pass a course hearing, the faculty evaluator must judge that the student has mastered all thecourse goals and objectives (the course hearing rubric and script facilitate make it straightforward for thefaculty evaluator to make this determination).

If the faculty evaluator judges that the student has mastered all course goals and objectives, they select“APPROVE” the student for demonstrating full mastery of the course goals and objectives, or in otherwords, they approve the student for passing the course. The student’s educational record for that courseis updated to PASS: FULL MASTERY. If the faculty evaluator judges that the student has not yetmastered all course goals and objectives, they select “NOT YET”, and the student’s record for that courseremains as not passed.

Newlane does not provide letter grades, but rather rigorously verifies and documents student mastery ofall course goals and objectives before approving a student to pass a course.

Course extensions and Incomplete grades: Since Newlane courses are self-paced, there is no timelineor due date for assignment submissions, or for scheduling or completing course hearings (outside of

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 53

satisfactory academic progress quantitative standard related to time to graduate), but that standardrelates to and can only affect a student’s category (i.e., Full time, Part time, or dismissed). This meansthat there are no course extensions, or incomplete grades offered through Newlane. Please see thesatisfactory academic progress policy for information on “do overs” for projects or course hearings.

Process for handling and resolving complaints:

We respond to complaints within one working day. When a complaint is submitted, it is first categorized asa complaint about either curriculum, technology, billing, or other. Any feedback that registers as acomplaint (i.e., feedback that points out a technological bug, or a curricular or billing practice or policy thatmistreats one or more student) goes through our complaint review and resolution process, that followsthese steps:

1. If we can quickly resolve the complaint without compromising in any way the platform integrity, wedo this as quickly as we can (for example, if a link is broken, or a word is misspelled in anobjective, lesson, course, or degree, etc.)

2. If we can’t resolve the issue immediately, where possible, respond to the author of the complaintto thank them for sharing the complaint, and let them know we have received it, and arereviewing it. If there are specific steps we’ll be taking that would be helpful to share with thecomplainant, express these (for example, if we can’t fix it immediately because we need to checkwith the tech team to resolve an issue, or check with an expert, or review the issue with Stripe–orother billing platform, etc.). If there are reasons for escalating the response time, communicatethis as well.

3. Articulate the complaint as best we can to the student and ask for clarification to ensure weunderstand the complaint sufficiently.

4. Seek a full resolution to the complaint, where possible, that does not compromise the integrity ofthe platform in any way.

5. Articulate the proposed resolution to the complainant, and if possible, get verification that thisresolves the complaint.

6. Where applicable, publicize the resolution to other affected parties.

Student Identity VerificationVerifying Identity at Newlane

Because of our ability to host meet frequently in live video conferences where we store a student’sgovernment-issued ID together with a growing string of images (with a new image of the student capturedduring each live session), the degree of our security is stronger than conventional measures in typicalcolleges and universities.

The steps to verifying your identity at Newlane include the following:

● Counselor reviews image of government-issued ID (must include a picture) at registration. Thisimage remains part of your student record.

● Counselor reviews image of Second Form of government-issued ID. This image also remains partof your student record.

● Signed Student Identity Statement (included in enrollment agreement)● Signed Student Academic Integrity Statement (included in enrollment agreement)● Verbal Agreement to Student Identity and Integrity Statements● Verify Student against government-issued picture ID

Details on these steps are included below:

In order to get started at Newlane, you’ll first need to verify your identity. This will also result in thecreation of your student ID profile, including a unique student ID number. In order to verify your identity, you’ll need to have two forms of government ID with you, at least one must have a recent picture. Thiscan be a passport, a driver’s license, or another form of government-issued ID with a picture. The otherform of government ID does not need to have a picture (thought it’s fine if it does), but it still must begovernment-issued (e.g. a social security card, a birth certificate, etc.)

Once you have gathered the requisite government-issued IDs, you’ll meet with a counselor. Thecounselor will walk you through the identity verification process: The counselor will take a picture of you.The counselor will compare your government IDs with your current appearance. They will ask you to signthe student agreements, and to verbally agree to them. As you meet with counselors and experts atNewlane as you work through your coursework, they will (with your permission) take additional picturesthat will comprise a collection of images attesting to your identity over time on your student record. Forexample, every time you have a course hearing, the expert in the hearing will review the images attestingto your identity, and add to it by taking an additional picture for each course hearing.

Academic Integrity Standards and PoliciesPlagiarism and cheating are not tolerated by Newlane University, and students involved in suchactivities are subject to disciplinary action. Specifically, plagiarism is defined as: “the use, whether by paraphrase or direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of anotherwithout full and clear acknowledgment”.

Cheating is summarized as follows: “the giving or receiving of unauthorized assistance onquizzes, examinations or written assignments from any source not approved by Newlane or itsFaculty.” Cheating occurs when a student attempts to get academic credit in a way that isdishonest, untrustworthy, irresponsible, or unfair. Cheating misrepresents a student’s knowledgeand abilities, and undermines an expert’s ability to honestly and fairly assess student knowledgeand mastery of learning objectives, or an expert’s ability to honestly and fairly assess whether astudent has fulfilled the rubric guidance on projects. Cheating also undermines Newlane’s abilityto honestly, fairly, and accurately verify student mastery of course goals and objectives.Plagiarism is an example of cheating.

Newlane University Catalog 2020-2021 www.newlaneuniversity.com 57

Page 58: Newlane University Course Catalog Newlane Academic Year ...

Plagiarism and cheating are serious academic offenses that can be easily avoided with a properunderstanding of citation guidelines. You’ll usually have resources in your course to help youlearn or review citation guidelines. If you have questions, you can reach out to Newlane Studentor Academic support.

The minimum punishment for plagiarism or cheating violations is no credit for the assignment. This means that the student would need to re-do and re-submit the assignment to get credit. Atthe first cheating violation, the student can re-do and re-submit the assignment. At the secondviolation, the student is put on academic probation and must meet with an academic advisor. Atthe third violation, the student is dismissed. The student can appeal the violation by completingthe suspected academic violation appeal form. Appeals are reviewed by the Safety, Ethics, andIntegrity Committee, whose decisions are final.

All suspected plagiarism and cheating violations must be submitted to the committee onacademic integrity–even if the student re-works and re-submits the assignment.

If you are unsure whether you may be cheating or plagiarizing, here are some general rules toapply:

● Complete all academic assignments by yourself.● Don’t use any unauthorized aids during an exam or course hearing.● Acknowledge and cite source material in your projects, papers, or assignments.● Don’t copy another student’s assignment, in part or in total, and submit it as your own

work.● Don’t copy anyone’s work, in part or in total, and submit it as your own work● Don’t purchase help or assignment completion from anyone (while purchasing help may

mean you “own” the material in a transactionary sense, it does not make it “yours” in anacademic sense)

● Don’t copy your online quiz or assignment answers from the internet or from anyone.● Don’t share your online quiz or assignment answers with any unauthorized individuals or

groups.

IDENTITY AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

By signing the enrollment agreement, students sign the following Identity and Academic IntegrityStatements:

Identity:

I verify that I am who I am presenting myself to be, and that I, and I alone will conduct allrequired coursework for which I am responsible for any course in which I enroll at NewlaneUniversity.

Academic Integrity:

I affirm my commitment to the standards of academic integrity in the Newlane Universitycommunity. purporting to have mastered learning content. I recognize that in submitting any project, takingany test, quiz, or exam of any kind at Newlane University, I am implicitly affirming this pledge:

“On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work, noram I aware of others doing so.”

Newlane University is committed to being a reliable, trusted worldwide resource and platform forverifying mastery of learning objectives. In order to maintain this trust requires the sharedcommitment of all community members to academic integrity. By this we mean that everycommunity member is honest in their presented identity, and every community membercompletes their work and presents their work for other members of the community (e.g. astudent turns in an assignment to be reviewed by an expert) without unauthorized aid. It meansthat cheating is not tolerated.

In our commitment to academic integrity, we celebrate that it is better to not yet know a subjectwell, than to feign mastery of a subject prematurely. At Newlane University, there is very littledownside to not yet having mastered one or more learning objective. It is a simple judgment byan expert, who is also a resource to help community members identify pathways for mastery. This idea is captured in a tenet from our manifesto:

Education should not be competitive or judged by other students’ achievements. Studentsshould only be assessed on whether they have mastered the stated objective or ‘not yet’.Removing competition decreases the incentive for cheating or cutting corners.

Here are instructions given to all experts on What to do if they suspect a violation of academicintegrity standards:

If you suspect that a student has violated the academic integrity policy, (for example, if yoususpect that a writing submission, or a portion of a writing submission was plagiarized) you mustreport this to the committee on academic integrity by taking the following steps, and filling out aSuspected Academic Integrity Violation form (even if the student has re-done and re-submittedthe work):

● Whenever a student submits a writing sample, select several small samples ofexemplary passages and do an advanced search for the exact passage to see if itappears elsewhere on the web.

● Inform the student that you suspect a violation of our academic integrity policy.● Inform the student of your rationale for your suspicion (e.g. a submitted writing sample is

considerably more advanced from the student’s typical work, discovery of a plagiarizedsection of a submission, etc.)

● Provide any relevant evidence for your suspicion. (e.g., a web page with very similar oridentical phrasing)

● Remind the student of the seriousness of violations of academic integrity andconsequences for such violations (i.e. the assignment can’t be considered complete; apattern of violations may result in expulsion from the University)

● Remind the student that they can also submit a defense or explanation to the committeeon academic integrity.

● Submit a Suspected Academic Integrity Violation form.

Some times, for any of anumber of reasons, a student may not be able to make satisfactory academic progress. A leave ofabsence with Newlane pauses the clock on a student’s academic and graduation schedule (and thus thetime frame for making satisfactory academic progress). A leave of absence can not extend beyond 30months.

Meeting this payment is a requirement to receive a Newlanediploma or official Newlane transcript showing degree completion.

The Associate degree is considered a single degree. The bachelor’s degree is considered two degrees:An Associate’s Degree (60 credits), which includes the general education requirement for any Bachelor’sdegree; plus major course work (e.g., courses within the philosophy major) and electives (if applicable). The major course work and electives make up 60 credits. The Associate degree plus the major coursework and electives make a total of 120 credits for the Bachelor’s degree.

If a student transfers an Associate degree to Newlane, they would only pay $1500 for the remainingcredits for a Bachelor’s degree. Newlane students should expect that they won’t be required to incur significant additional costs outside ofthis $1500. Nevertheless, possible costs outside the $1500 include books, tools, and supplies that may berecommended or required (Newlane tries to use free resources, but occasionally there may be arecommended resource that has a cost). Newlane does not sell books or supplies, but may point toresources that can help with the students’ education on online stores. These are generally optional andNewlane tries to keep these recommendations to a minimum.
