NEWS FROM CENTRAL NEWFOUNDLAND – GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR

The Central Newfoundland Multicultural Society and Amnesty International in conjunction with the local CNAinstitution gave an open invitation to central Newfoundland residents and all immigrants to join them in an evening ofeducation and entertainment on March 15, 2010 commencing with greeting from Mayor Allan Hawkins.

The educational aspects include two guest speakers, retired Salvation Army Major Lorraine Fudge of Brighton whospoke on her missionary work in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and Mrs. Lorraine Hearn, who made all aware of the manyfacets of her Committee Against Violence including woman, men and kids. This was later complemented by JenniferSaunders and her group who read first person accounts of universal women who are victims of cultural abuse andrepression.

Dr. Mohamed Boodhun read from La Fontaine’s work in his native French language and CNMS president AubreySmith delivered a short humorous poem he created on Time’s capriciousness.

Music and song was provided by the Miq Maq Sple / tk Nation drummers, Howard Barnes who charmed us withhis interesting historical backgrounds to songs and his harmonica skills, and Ms. Sue Hickey who played and sangabout the famous American trial of injustice against Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Yet, one great joy of theevening was a song of patriotism in Punjabi by Rifat Saeed whose love for his native country was obvious.

Many thanks to our local business firms who donated door prizes and a special thanks to CNA ( College of the NorthAtlantic) principal Ms. Joan Pynn for use of the premises and equipment.

It was truly an evening of fun, food and fellowship , and community cooperation aptly called a “Taste of Justice” topromote our budding Amnesty International group. Anyone interested in joining our local Amnesty Internationalgroup may contact Ms. Jennifer Saunders or Ms. Sue Hickey.

The Central Newfoundland Multicultural Society is working on three current project: Mrs. Jasmin Boodhun, wifeof Dr. Sadiq Boodhun, has offered her cooking skills todemonstrate to a small group of invited guest the secretsof Pakistani cuisine. This event is awaiting selection of asuitable facility that will lead itself to simultaneouslycooking and educating, followed by tasting and socializing.Interested person in central should call President AubreySmith at 489-5068 or any member of your Society.
