This is WOOD magazine. The aim of WOOD is to create a network of young artist and
designers helping create a new network of people collaborate and provide more stimu-
lus for other artists around them.
We believe that currently such a network doesnt exist with a magazine and website
form so we attempt to bridge that gap in the market as well as provide a new interesting
lifestyle magazine also.
The magazine contains features with some of the most interesting and distinct new
voices in the world of Art and Design.
Fitting to this we have dubbed this , our first issue the youth issue : feel the fear and do
it anyway. Looking at youth as an adescolent and also as a artist /visual communicator
and the highs and lows this can bring. Through the work of womenswear designer Helen
Carney, and our own visual diary dubbed anxieties we hope to give you inspiration as
well as insight into the perspective of new young designers.
We also have interviews and features on more up and coming people within the sphere
of art and design . Should you want to contribute to the magazine. Dont hesistate to
contact us via our tumblr with your work and brief profile of what your work is about .

DAYS OF THE FUTURE PAST
Technology moved faster than ever before ushering in a new age of
escapism through 3d graphics of ethereal and otherwordly beings.
This in term has helped mould a generations visual arts skills so much so that strains of
comtemporary art are now being made solely through computers using lo fi graphics of
yesteryear.
Through glitching people are able tocreate abstract works which can be deeply
emotive .
Weve made some and featured some of our favour ite 8bit heroes.
DUKE NUKEM , ZELDA, GALAXIA ..theyre
all here in glitched form couple with some abstract hypercolour glitchs we have con-
strcted.
At WOOD we are really excited to see how this develops and hopes to be continually
part of this trend of integrating old techno-loges and subverting them.

wood : You studied textile design at Central Saint Martins (CSM), how would you say this has informed your aesthetic as a stylist?
I would say that my origin aesthetic was there fi rst , and my craft came second -
wood: What are the biggest inspirations to your aesthetic ?
Specfi cally , id say that one of my biggest inspirations is London youth culture. Within my generation we have not just subscribed to the culture of your parents and we’ve appropriated pieces of other cultures . Like me , for instance indian ,jewish , african and english cultures have all been amalgamated to fi t under the umbrella of my british culture. Its inclu-sive of every culture and heritage. It doesn’t allow for any sort of exclusivity.
wood:Having looked at your work I would say that the central focus is on youth, how would you defi ne what youth is ?
For a start , youth for me isn’t a age thing at all, which i know sounds a bit crazy seen as the word has strong correlations with age. I think there is a lot of heritage in youth culture . The word youth culture isn’t synonymous with heritage its about history so youth culture to me is , is a culture which appreciates things that have happen historically and make it relevant for now . I would say that its a mindset as opposed to a specifi c age.
wood: So having seen you today, we know youve got a very distinct style, whats gonna be your look for summer?
Agh , i hate questions like that , trends are trends ; i understand them but I dont follow them, what I love about what i do is that a product yes may have been designed 6 months ago 12 months ago and was styled in a particular way by the de-signer but this isnt the way that i may use it .So for my summer wardrobe its gonna be more of the same ,you know. More varsity jackets , more xxl tees , more basketball trainers - the bottoms depend . (on what my hair is like)
wood: Finally, what does the year 2012 hold for you ?
Im hoping for great things , between the fi rst and fourth of january every year my dad, my sister and I have a meeting , well a conversation about the year prior what went well for us and what didnt go so well .. and in all honesty I can say that I have been really happy with the way things have gone .I achieved a lot in 2011 and now I want to learn ; I want to be able to wake up everymorning and be happy with the job that I do . In order for me to do that i need to keep on hav-ing a diversity within my work , whether its designing , teaching or styling . Because they all compliment each other so much i cant see myself as being a good stylist without being a good teacher which in turn informs my design asethethic.so yeah more styling , more teaching more living !

interview
Historically , Dalston has been home to artists and designers alike. Patricia , or P.C as she is affectionately known as shares a studio with I.D womenswear editor Hanna Kelifa whom she met at university.
Upon graduating from her textiles degree she worked for a variety of designers such as streetwear designers Christopher Shannon and Kesh, and then she developed a menswear label of her own.
Whilst she began solidifying the menswear brand she also started to take on styling jobs for high profi le sportswear brands such as Adidas, Puma and J.D Sports. As well as styling for music/youth lifestyle magazines and styling up and coming bands.
More recently she has also taken up a teaching post at her old university .All before the age of 25.
But that’s not all,
She also knows her way around a c-dj and has been known to host a good knees up.At her free monthly dancehall night in everyones favourite lo -fi east london haunt, the Alibi, Dalston.
We met up with her in Camden for dim sum and to fi nd out what inspires the polymath that is

“ I dont see myself as having made it yet , I just really need to get my stuff out there! ”
introducing modern feminsm with helen carney.
Carney’s entry into fashion has been a less than orthodox one , having worked in retail and showing a keen attention to branding she then delveoped a love for the technical side of fashion retail.
Engrossed by fit and excitied by the cloth choices made with brands she decided to study fashion herself , with a hope of de-veloping this skill set and making her own collection.
Helen cites designer Jil sander , Haider Ackermann and Pheobe Phile as strong refernces within her particular asethetic.
I think that women are akways at the fore-front of mind . Not in a way that most de-signers think though .. id say i have always been concerned with the more practical asepcts of fashion and what i do is attempt to marry them with thing that are feminine and make women feel special.
Having worked for several fashion labels including London based menswear brand NEW POWER STUDIOS she decided that menswear wasnt for her . “Throughout col-lege I was told that my attention to detail was something that was more in tune with menswear.
Thats how i got into interning with Thom (Murphy ) and Ebru (Ercon). I realised that to a certain extent people thought that be-cause i didnt want to make pretty typically girly stuff or really avant garde things that the other route for me wouldve been this.”
Despite enjoying this experience she de-cided that womenswear was where she felt she fitted in and left to develop her grau-date collection which has recieved positive reviews from a variety of fashion publications and blogs.
The silouhettes are streamlined, colour palette, muted and cloth choices ; technical. Making her a truly innovative brand within womenswear.
The perspective she has is that within womenswear overty girly women and women who consider themselves to be
avant guarde have brands that will reach their asethetic . Helen’s collection echoes her ethos for womens wear for the descerning.Women who is feminine but still has a interest in functionality. Having secured a job on the completion of her degree within for a high end european brand she is yet to settle down as she is cur-rently considering concepts for her next collection.
“Im in such a good position at the moment in terms of my job and i would love to continue designing for myself in my free time.I dont really see myself as having made it though, just trying to get my stuff out there”
a wood we are extremely honored to have had the chance to feature Helen Carneys Collection and look forward to seeing it develop.
