ASSURE Method Assignment

I. Analyze Learners: The students that I will be teaching are first grade students in

Special Education. There are ten boys and seven girls. Seventy percent are white,

twenty percent are African-American, and ten percent are Hispanic. Seven students

in the class have mild to severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Each

of my students will have different learning styles; thus I will incorporate a variety of

teaching strategies and methods throughout this lesson.

II. State Objectives: My first grade students will recite the months of the year in

sequential order by utilizing role-play, songs, books, calendars, categorical labels,

visual aids, and posters with 95% accuracy at the end of the week.

III. Selecting Methods, Material, and Media: Throughout the lesson, I will utilize the

following methods, media, and materials:

Smart Board: I will use the classroom smart board in order to display a twelve

month calendar.

Songs/Videos: To teach the sequence of the months, I will display a music

video on the classroom smart board, entitled The Months of the Year Song by

Hoopla Kids. (The music video can be located at the following website:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4s-ut7N0jQ.)

Felt Board and Month Labels: I will give each child twelve labels that he or

she will use to categorize the months into the four seasons.

Page 2: Newci350assureassignment 131101200245-phpapp02 (3)

Children’s Book: For the read aloud, I will read The Turning of the Year by Bill

Martin, which describes facts about each month, such as characteristics of

that month, important holidays, and seasonal activities.

Visual Aids: To help my students relate to the lesson, I will bring in tangible

objects that the children can touch and feel in order to represent each

month. (For example, I will bring in a pumpkin for October, a Christmas

ornament for December, and a scarf for January, etc.)

Poster Materials: In the center of each table, I will place the supplies that my

students will need to create a month of the year poster. Materials for this

project would include: markers, construction paper, clip art, glue, and safety

scissors.

Role-playing: As one of my methods, I will allow my students to role-play

various activities or traditions that they and their families participate in each

month. This interactive activity will especially benefit my ADHD students as

well as my other kinesthetic learners.

IV. Utilizing Medias and Materials: Before the lesson, I will preview all materials and

electronic devices that will be used throughout the lesson. Thus, I will pre-read the

children’s book prior to the in-class read aloud, preview the music clip, set out the

felt board and visual aids, and check to make sure the smart board is working

properly. In addition, I will cut out the labels of each month for the students to

categorize. Since most of my lesson will involve small group work, I will arrange the

tables in pods to seat two or three children. The poster supplies will be located in

Page 3: Newci350assureassignment 131101200245-phpapp02 (3)

the center of each table so that each student will have easy access to these

materials, and the criteria for this small-group project will be written on the

chalkboard in short, easy to read phrases. Finally, I will leave plenty of space at the

front of the classroom so that the students can experience learning through role-

play and other interactive techniques.

V. Require Learning Participation: In order to encourage student participation, I will

begin the lesson by asking if any of the students have a birthday in August. We will

then locate that particular month on the interactive smart board calendar. Next, I

will display a video clip to teach the names and sequence of the months through

song. Following this activity, I will use a felt board to demonstrate how the months

of the year can be categorized into four seasons. Then to prompt student

participation, I will pass out labels so that each child can practice categorizing and

grouping the different months by season. Once the students have completed this

activity, I will instruct the children to gather around the reading rug for our read

aloud. While reading the book entitled: The Turning of the Year, I will pass around

tangible items (visual aids) to represent each month as discussed in the book. This

will allow the children to remain active by constantly participating throughout the

reading. Next, the students will be divided into small groups of two. Each group will

create a poster, representing a certain month. Once this project has been

completed, I will allow volunteers to role-play a few of the monthly activities or

cultural traditions that they and their families participate in. This will help to make

the learning more meaningful and interactive.

VI. Evaluate and Revise: To check for student learning and achievement I will assess my

students in the following ways:

Walk around the room to ask the students questions. (For example, I will

ask which month comes before June, and which months are in between

September and December.)

Ask students to demonstrate how to categorize the months into the four

seasons by using the provided labels.

Check that each poster contains four facts about that particular month

(including at least one holiday).

Instruct students to recite the months of the year in sequential order.
