Percent Fellows mentioning
Very personal and passionate! • “It was an eye-‐opener, it allowed me to mingle
with other cultures and to see things from a
different perspective I am very grateful for
the chances given to me.”
• “Although I am extremely grateful to the
foundation, I have to admit that I have not
found it easy to participate to events that
would give me the sense of belonging to a
community.”
• “The BAEF fellowship made it possible for me
to study at the University of Ghent, where I was
the first American student to enroll in the
master's program in EU Studies. I feel very
connected to Belgium (having studied Belgian
Federalism in Ghent as well), and hope to
involve Belgian affairs in my future career
trajectory.”
• "This was really life changing for me (and my
wife). We still have good friends, memories,
professional contact in the US all thank to the
BAEF! Meanwhile I have also been teaching
summer classes in the US and have accepted
internship students form the US to our lab and
I have send people from our lab to the US.
Great experience and indeed allowed for more
exchange between Belgium and the US even
broader than myself! Only negative thing is
that we are still homesick for the US!”
• “made it possible for me to work with a group
of outstanding academicians; I also learned to
appreciate the American people, their culture
and values. My BAEF experience definitely
created both academic and business
opportunities for me.”
• “The BAEF fellowship really did change my
career and my life. I had never been on a plane
before, never lived in an English-‐speaking
country, etc. and now I am at the top of my
profession, a professor in the US, and a US/
Belgian dual citizen. I am still in touch with a
number of people I knew in graduate school in
California.”
• “BAEF was special for me to go to Belgium and
continues to provide a deep connection for me
by way of the network I am now a part of in the
US of former BAEF scholars. The BAEF
experience is priceless!”
• “The BAEF made my dream come true. I am
and will always be deeply grateful.”
• “Not much, I now live abroad. I was only a
honorary fellow, so I feel no particular loyalty
to BAEF. judging from who else got a
fellowship, it was not decided on merit but
more on a political basis, ie make sure that all
Belgian universities were represented. “
• “The BAEF launched my career as a carillon
performer and composer. I am very grateful.”
• “At the institution where I worked during my
BAEF fellowship, I met my wife. She later
moved with me to Belgium and became a US
BAEF fellow in Belgium, so the BAEF certainly
played an important role in our lives!”
