THE CITY #THECITY#

Two exciting destinations that havebecome one, Newcastle (on the north bankof the River Tyne) and Gateshead (on thesouth) have become NewcastleGatesheadand have undergone a spectaculartransformation in the last decade.NewcastleGateshead has become a city atthe forefront of technical innovation, leisure and culture; making it one of themost vibrant cities in Britain and as such, agreat holiday destination, with fantasticshopping and an amazing nightlife.

History is still a vital part of bothNewcastle and Gateshead, as seen by theexciting mix of old and new mingling inharmony within and around the city.

Newcastle in particular has a very rich andcolourful history, starting with the earliestsettlements in the region at around 5000BC, and continuing with the arrival of theRomans in 43 AD.

In 1080 a castle was built on the oldRoman fort of Pons Aelius as a defenceagainst the Scots. It was branded the newcastle, which is from where Newcastle gotits name. The castle was paramount to thedevelopment of the city, as the militarypresence boosted commerce and trade.Coal from the Northumberland coalfieldslater become one of the main reasons forthe city’s urban development, while in the19th century shipbuilding and heavyengineering boosted the city’s prosperity.Newcastle and Gateshead suffered amid

the decline of heavy industries in the latterhalf of the 20th century, and these daystheir staples are technology, and office andretail employment.

Newcastle’s rich history andNewcastleGateshead’s newly found gloryas one of the most vibrant cities in Britainis evident wherever you go in the area, which features an exciting mix of new andold. Sights range from the Norman castle,Roman ruins, impressive Victorianbuildings and the world-famous TyneBridge, to the award-winning GatesheadMillennium Bridge, the new developmentsat Gateshead Quays and NewcastleQuayside with their stylish hotels, designerbars and funky restaurants.

With some 460,000 people living inNewcastleGateshead, it is no surprise thatthe city has some of the best shopping onoffer in Britain, as well as an abundance oftrendy bars, nightclubs, museums andcultural events.
