Due to the massi ve success of maiden tour in 2012, ska leg ends, the En glish Beat, are comin g back for a repeat skanking session.
Charging onto the scene as ‘the hottest thing since the Pennsylvania meltdown’ in 1979, Birming-ham’s ska kin gs sustained an equally e xplosive career, spearheading the Bri tish ska mo vement alongside influential acts like The Specials, Madness, Bad Manners and The Selecter.
The current US-based incarnation boasts a setlist jam packed with fan favourites - Mirror In the Bathroom, Save It For Later, Too Nice to Talk To, Stand Down Margaret, Hands Off She’s Mine and I Confess to name a few.
Pick it up, pick it up.
WHAT'S ON After blowing away all expectations with
his barnstormin g Sharkmouth set last year, R ussell M orris has defini tely g one one better with Van Diemen’s Land.
The second in a proposed trilog y, Van Diemen’s Land picks up where Shark-mouth, and i t’s chroniclin g of A ustralian characters, left off , but this time around, with stories of the Eureka Stockade, Breaker Morant and S andakan, the scope is much bigger.
While an y artist, when tacklin g such subject ma tter, r uns the risk of driftin g into overly sentimental or ma wkish terri-tory, Morris avoids this problem creating a riveting catalogue of Aussie tales.
Musically this is roots/ blues par e xcel-lence and with help from the likes of Rick Springfield, Chain ’s Phil Mannin g, S cott Owen from the Living End, and Rob Hirst, it’s almost an essential listening.
Directed by Zack Snyder (The Watchmen, 300) this post-modern adventure is a visual feast.
Baby Doll (Emily Bro wning) is lock ed away in an asylum b y her abusi ve stepfa ther where she w ill undergo a lobotom y in fi ve days’ time. F aced with unimaginable od ds, she retrea ts to a fan tastical world where she and four other female inmates plot to escape the facility. The lines betw een reality and fantasy blur as Baby Doll fights for freedom.
This by-the-numbers action flick contains pretty much everything you’d want in a Jason Statham film - machismo, gunplay, explosions and designer stubble. Statham stars as a former DEA agent who has gone through a crisis after his action against a biker gang went horribly wrong and it cost the life of his boss’ son.
He decides to quit the turbulent and demanding life of thrill for his daugh-ter’s sake and retires to a small town. As is the case with such things, Statham is soon drawn into a stouch with the local meth kingpin (James Franco).
This film isn’t trying to break any new ground, but it’s a decent enough action flick and James Franco brings a certain gravitas to proceedings.

Let the good times
After the massi ve success of last year’s APIA Good Time s tour - featuring Daryl Braith-waite, J oe C amilleri, J ames Reyne and Ross Wilson - it’s
coming back to Newcastle, this time featur-ing another bevy of formidable talent in Joe Camilleri, Russell Morris, Richard Clapton and Leo Sayer.
“Yeah, they’re all a grea t bunch of fellas and the sho w should be a hell of a lot of fun,” Russell Morris told TE.
Morris, who is c urrently enjoying qui te the purple pa tch, thanks to the r unaway success of his A ustraliana blues-roots masterpiece Sharkmouth and no w i ts follow-up Van Die men’s Land said tha t punters could expect an ev en smattering of classic hits and new tunes.
STEPHEN BISSET
MUSIC
“Obviously a lot of m y earlier hi ts lik e The Real Thing and Wings of an Eagle will be in there, but I’m also keen to play a few tunes off Sharkmouth and Van Die men’s Land,” he said.
“We’ll all be doing individual sets and we may just all g et up tog ether as w ell, so i t should be pretty exciting.”
One of the coun try’s most endurin g singer son gwriters, M orris hi t c reative paydirt last y ear w ith one of 2013 ’s most surprising releases in Sharkmouth. The barnstorming blues album, full of tales about such colourful A ussie figures as Squizzy T aylor, Phar L ap and L es Darc y, has become Morris’ most successful album to date. Not a bad effort considering that it was released completely independently.
“It was such a lo vely feeling to see the album do so well - it’s absolutely fantastic and much more than I e xpected,” Morris said of Sharkmouth.
“I have absolutely no animosi ty toward
the labels tha t turned i t down though - I actually have received a few let ters since the release from labels apologising for not giving the album the attention it deserved - which is nice.”
Now, w ith the second album in a proposed trilogy, Van Diemen’s Land, out and doin g i t’s thin g, i t seems the purple patch is set to continue for Morris who has produced another thumping blues record that is ev en bigg er in scope, both musi-cally and lyric ally to Sharkmouth - co ver-ing such topic s as the Eureka Stockade and Breaker Morant.
“Without bein g jin goistic, the reason I decided to tackle A ustraliana as a topic is that, if you’re going to do a blues and roots album - it should definitely be about your roots,” he said.
Morris, who is perhaps best kno wn for his seminal psy ch classic The R eal Thing has defini tely achiev ed icon sta tus, w ith the ubiquitous track added to the National Film and S ound Archi ve last y ear - although he said he wasn’t sure about the icon tag.
“It’s so grea t to be recognised in such a way, but I don ’t really kno w about bein g called an icon, ’ he laughed. “ An icon is something you put on a wall and look a t from time to time and I’ m not ready to be put on a wall just yet.”

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the fore-most researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intel-ligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions.
His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology ex-tremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.
In their attempt to destroy Will, they in-advertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own tran-scendence.
For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fel-low researchers, the question is not if they can - but if they should.
Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seem-ingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown.
The only thing that is becoming terrifying-ly clear is there may be no way to stop him.
German director Margarethe von Trotta’s film centers on philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt’s response to the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann, which she covered for The New Yorker magazine.
Her writing on the trial became controversial for its depiction of both Eichmann and the Jewish councils, and for its introduction of Arendt’s now-famous concept of “the banality of evil”.
Starring: Barbara Sukowa, Axel Mil-berg, Janet McTeer.

The invisible woman [Rated M] Reviewed at tower Cinemas Newcastle by melissah Comber
The amazing spiderman 2: The rise of Electro [Rated M] Reviewed at event Cinemas, Glendale by stephen Bisset
Did you feel that? That niggle of a tremor? That was Charles Dickens trying to turn in his grave, but getting so bored that he gave up halfway and rolled back.
Directed by and starring Ralph Fiennes (the Harry Potter franchise, The Grand Budapest Hotel), The Invisible Woman is based on the novel of same name by Claire Tomalin, which tells the story of the prolific 19th century author’s relationship with his mistress, Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones). Plodtastic and snoozificent, the film progressed at a pace that would leave a sloth, a tortoise and a snail in a three-legged race going, “Seri-ously dude, even we can move faster than that.” After spending a good 80 minutes waiting for them to hook-up I no longer had interest in watching them happily frolic in French fields, lose a child or heartbreakingly end their summer of love.It gets one star because there were a few good shots, and Joanna Scanlan lit up the screen as the cuckqueaned wife, Catherine Dickens.
Everyone’s favourite wise-cracking webslinger is back. While director Marc Webb’s second outing in this iconic franchise reboot ticks all of the superhero blockbuster boxes - 3D friendly aerial shots, over-the-top-set pieces, explosions et al, there is a fair amount of story squeezed into the eye candy - from the rela-tionship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy to Peter searching for clues around his parents’ death to the obligatory baddies - this time the sparky Electro and the Green Goblin.
While there is a sense that this film is a mere set-up for further films in the franchise (not to mention spin-offs), much of the charm of The Amazing Spiderman 2 comes not from the whiz-bang CGI but from the chemistry created between the two leads - Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman and Emma Stone’s Gewn Stacy.
With this franchise reboot coming just seven years after direc-tor Sam Raimi’s last Spiderman outing, there is a sense that it has all been done before.

Even the fussiest of diner w ill be spoilt for choice upon paying a v isit to the V alley View Restaurant at the Adam-stown Club.
With an expansive menu of eastern and western dishes, the only challen ge you’re likely to face in this bustlin g and f riendly bistro is limi ting yourself to just one dish per course.
After much c areful considera tion, m y dining partner and I dec ided to opt for a feast of Chinese favourites.
We ordered up a ser ve of garlic pra wns and a pipin g hot portion of chick en and sweet corn soup . P resented on a siz zling mini hotpla te, these succ ulent c rusta-ceans w ere sw imming in f ragrant garlic oil that packed a mighty punch - the ideal start to a meal for two hungry garlic-lovers. The chicken and sweet corn lived up to its name and i ts reputa tion as m y fa vourite Chinese starter - a perfect balance of sweet and sa voury, and they didn ’t skimp on the chicken either. A w inning start to the evening.
As quickly as w e’d dev oured our start -ers, our mains had arri ved on our table. My choice this time was another personal favourite, c rispy beef w ith Peking Sauce. This mountainous serve of c risp strips of beef coated in a sticky, sweet red sauce did not disappoin t. M y dinin g partner w ent from the chick en in gin ger and shallots - y et another f ragrant dish tha t had me salivating from across the table.
As if the size of the mains weren’t gener-ous enough, diners a t the V alley V iew Restaurant are also in vited to fill a pla te at the salad bar or v egetable buffet. A welcome bonus.
We finished the night on a high-note.
East meets west
What bet ter wa y to c ap off a nigh t of Asian delic iousness than w ith a ser ve of deep fried ice cream?
A glorious g olden dome of c rispy batter concealing a g enerous scoop of sw eet vanilla ice cream smothered with a sticky glaze of c aramel topping. No wonder this dessert is a classic.
If y our e xperience a t the V alley V iew Restaurant is an ything lik e ours, y ou certainly won’t be leaving the place on an empty stomach.
Plus, w ith tasty $9 .90 dinner spec ials available f rom Sunda y to Thursda y, $9.90 roasts all da y Sunda y and $9 .90 blackboard lunch specials every day of the week, it’s affordable too.

Stones to satisfyHunter fansIn what is possibly the biggest music news to hit the Hunter in, well, forever, the Rolling Stones are headed our way this November as part of their mammoth 14 On Fire world tour.
The leg endary rock ers w ere forced to postpone the Australian leg of the w orld tour in March follo wing the tragic death of Mick Jagger’s girlfriend L’Wren Scott.
The reschedulin g of the tour to O ctober/November has allowed the addition of two extra shows - Hope Estate and Perth Arena. With supports for the Hope Estate show to be announced shortly, this is somethin g y ou w on’t wan t to miss. The Rolling Stones play at Hope Estate on S aturday, November 15. P re-sale tick ets w ill be a vailable v ia w ww.frontiertouring.com/rollingstones f rom noon Tuesda y 29 April until noon Wednesday 30 April ( or earlier if pre-sale allocation is exhausted). Head to the site for further details.

Angeles syn th-op fi ve piece The Naked and Famous, are set to do it all again - this time on the ac tion-packed Groovin’ the Moo line-up, set to hit Maitland next weekend.
“Yeah Groovin’ t he M oo shoul d be pret ty cool,” f rontman Thom Powers told TE.
“The Big Da y Out was really cool but, w e’ve only really done summer festi vals o ver there before so it will be nice to pla y in some, hopefully, cooler weather.”
The band, who are c urrently riding high on the back of their sophomore release In R olling Waves, also recen tly completed a massi ve U S stadium tour w ith rockers-of-the-moment Imagine Dragons - not a bad foot in the door at all.
“It was just amazin g playing on such massive stages,” he said.
“It’s a li ttle w eird bec ause y ou are so far apart f rom one another on stag e, thin gs c an g et a li ttle reserved but w e warmed to i t after a li ttle while. W e pla yed a crazy sho w in V ancouver where
pretty much the whole audience got out their iPhones and w ere waving them around sin ging along to album tracks which just blew us all away.”
The band, who re-located to Los Angeles in 2012 ha ve produced an album in In Rolling Waves that is a w elcome barrag e of elec tro rock - put ting them in the same league as the lik es of MGMT and Passion Pit.
After tourin g the legs off their debut Passive Me, Aggressive You, the band holed up in their L A home to la y the founda tions of the record before hi tting a H olly-wood studio to put the finishin g touches on it. Powers said the fact
the band w ere all li ving together made for a much more cohesi ve record. “I’d say i t was a diffic ult album to mak e, but really , all albums are qui te diffic ult to make,” he said.
“But I think tha t i t is a really cohesive album, a v ery prec ise album and one tha t w e are all completely happ y w ith, both creatively and personally.”
The Naked and F amous play at Groovin’ The M oo, Mai tland on Saturday, April 26. With Maitland GTM now sold out, if you missed out, never fear.
You c an c atch the Nak ed and Famous at Sydney’s Metro Thea-tre on Tuesday, May 13.

Flying solo
T here’s li ttle den ying tha t, as a founding member and son g-writer for New castle’s rockingest
outfit The S creaming Jets, Paul W oseen has left an indelible mark on the A ussie rock and roll landscape.
With such classic J ets tunes as Help-ing Hand, Holding On and October Grey under his belt, there’s no doubt Woseen’s contribution to the band - aside f rom his blistering harmonies and slinky bass lines - is immeasurable.
Now, Woseen is striking out on his own, with his debut solo album, Bombido.
The album fea tures a selec tion of J ets tracks, written by Woseen, stripped back to their bare acoustic essen tials as w ell as a few new tracks. W oseen has just kicked off a tw o-month na tional tour , which w ill hi t New castle ne xt mon th, and he said the sho ws have been g oing swimmingly.
“I’ve done two shows on the tour so far and they’ve been bloody great,” he said.
“I’m pla ying more smaller v enues on this tour which really lend to the stripped back honesty of the wa y I presen t the songs.”
With more than 30 J ets tunes under his belt, W oseen said he took qui te a pragmatic approach in dec iding wha t tracks made the final c ut. “Well they’re all the son gs that I wrote, so I basic ally went through them all and the ones that didn’t sound s**t when I sang them were the ones that made it on the album,” he laughed.
While steppin g out f rom behind the “safety net” of a band migh t seem lik e a daun ting task for some, W oseen said he has taken to solo mode lik e a duck to water.
“It wasn’t really daunting at all because
this is a process tha t has been buil ding up for years,” he said.
“I had alwa ys wan ted to do the solo thing, and i t just seemed tha t the time was right.”
With a new J ets album sla ted for sometime this year, Woseen said he was keen to get back in the studio for album number two, when time permits.
“The plan is, w e’re almost finished writing for the ne xt Jets album, so after that’s out and w e tour i t, I’m definitely keen to g et back in the studio - I’ ve got quite a few songs that I’m keen to get out there.”
