Sparke Helmore NBN Festival 14-16 MarchFor over 21 years the Sparke Helmore NBN Triathlon has been Newcastle’s premier participant sporting event, raising in excess of $450,000 for the Newcastle based Hunter Medical Research Institute and other local sport and service groups. The Gap Creek Falls TrailCommencing from the Gap Creek picnic area, this track will lead you to an impressive waterfall with a sheer drop of 40 metres while passing through cool rainforest with fascinating features such as red cedars and a large Illawarra flame tree. This trail will take approximately one hour to complete and offers a sheltered picnic area, free gas and wood barbeques and camping so you can enjoy the natural surrounds overnight.

Muirs Walking TrailTaking approximately one hour to complete this 1.5 kilometre trail leads through beautiful blackbutt and bluegum forests and rainforest gullies. Pack a light lunch to enjoy at the Muirs picnic area before starting your journey.

The Pines TrailPassing through remarkable Aboriginal grinding grooves in sandstone this track features areas with moist eucalypt and rainforest and an exquisite rock pool. Starting at the Pines Picnic area the whole family will enjoy exploring the natural surrounds of this 1.1 kilometre track.

Watagan TrailIndulge in some of the best forest scenery and vantage points in the Watagans on this 8 kilometre trail from Heaton Lookout to Mcleans Lookout. Pass through the gorgeous moss-covered overhangs and rainforest plants at Wallis Creek Canyon and enjoy breathtaking views over the Hunter Valley from the Hunter Lookout. Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival 28-30th MarchThe Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival is in its 11th year and is recognised as a NSW Tourism Flagship Event. Rejoice in all that is A Little Bit of Italy in Broke. Indulge in the bella Broke Fordwich Wine Region for fun and gusto at this two day event that gives visitors to the little known and tranquil destination the

Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing

tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia.

There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám: Work by Tallulah CunninghamThis remarkable exhibition combines two passions of the artist: that of sharing the Rubaiyat itself and that of illustrating the natural world. These exquisite illustrations are hand drawn onto two four metre length scrolls. They offer a visual translation, set for the first time in the Hunter Valley, based on the poems of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám, translated in the Victorian Age by Edward FitzGerald – a feat unto itself!From Newcastle Harbour, inland through wineries and agricultural plains, through the national parks and mining towns, detailed depictions of lizards and flowers endemic to the landscape brush shoulders with weed species and landmark buildings. In so doing they give new visual symbols to poems that have inspired for generations. The subject of Tallulah Cunningham’s PhD in Natural History Illustration at Newcastle University, these scrolls have been delicately made in Japan using traditional techniques. This is a rare opportunity to not only learn poetry through the fine arts, but to also be inspired by the extraordinary workmanship that has gone into their fabrication. There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days

of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.
