World Premiere Mr Bennet's Bride at NTCWritten by Emma Wood & directed by Julie Black

Performances: Wed, Fri, Sat at 8pm March 8-22 2pm Matinees Sunday March 9 and Saturday March 15A PREQUEL TO PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Award winning playwright and director team up with a stunning cast to present the year’s most hotly anticipated show…

Mr Bennet’s Bride, a new play by Emma Wood, is an original period comedy, based on two much-loved characters from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Fans of the novel, film or mini-series, will remember with fondness the parents of Elizabeth Bennet – Mr and Mrs Bennet. This play explores these characters earlier in their lives, particularly concerning itself with how this ill matched couple met and decided to marry.

In the late eighteenth century, marriage is a business transaction as much as a love affair – the family all take a part in the proceedings! With the shadow of the entail to the Collins family looming large, pressure mounts on the young Mr Bennet to find a suitable match – but his unwillingness to play by the rules sets in motion a series of events that are both comic and at times moving.

Wollombi Valley www.hunterimag.com.au

Wollombi Valley is nestled between the Watagan Forests and Yengo National Park, just an hour and a half from Sydney at the gateway to the Hunter Valley. Wollombi has a rich

convict history, reflected in the many original sandstone buildings and cottages peppered throughout the area. The Endeavour Museum is a great place to explore local history, located opposite the famous Wollombi Tavern – home of Dr Jurds Jungle Juice.

Wollombi is a photographer’s dream with a unique flavour all its own, offering experiences to suit everyone. Here you can enjoy a picnic lunch, a fine dining restaurant or the immensely popular local cafes and shops, everything from a nursery and an antique store to a world class wool store and several quirky gift shops. Accommodation ranges from farm stays and self contained guesthouses

to gorgeous boutique B&Bs set amongst the bush.

The Wollombi Valley Wine Trail offers a diverse range of locally produced wines and a friendly welcome to all. Wollombi is also home to Australia’s largest private sculpture park, Defiance Gallery on a former lavender farm. All are bordered by National Parks with great bushwalking trails, lookouts and aboriginal rock carvings.

Enjoy all the Fun and Gusto at the Hunter Valley's Italian Festival!

Rejoice in all that is A Little Bit of Italy in Broke. Indulge in the bella Broke Fordwich Wine Region for fun and gusto at this two day event that gives visitors to the little known and tranquil destination the

opportunity to enjoy a great Italian fiesta and experience mouth watering gourmet delights, which have long been the world’s envy! It’s Italy without the airfare!

Broke is like a secret, one you can’t wait to share; it’s romantic, sophisticated and worth the trip (approximately two and a half hours from Sydney, or 15 minutes west of Hunter Valley’s main hub).

Now in its 7th year, the festival that started out as a private dinner catered by an Italian chef has grown into a celebration of all that is wine, food, music, family and community, coloured by the enthusiasm associated with the Italians' enjoyment of these things.

Starting at the "Passport Office" in the main street of the village of Broke, visitors receive their passport and begin their journey. The price of entry is the $5 purchase of a souvenir tasting glass, which is used at each venue for a free sample of the local wines.

The passport lists the twelve participating venues and the food and entertainment to be found there. As the visitor travels from venue to venue they can get their passport stamped, allowing them to go into the draw for over $2,000 worth of local premium wines, gourmet produce and accommodation.

Over 3,000 people each year enjoy this event, many returning over and over again.

Situated in the broad valley of the Broke Fordwich Wine Region, the area is a registered sub-region of the Hunter Valley, with its producers committed to the veracity and integrity of their quality wines.

Although exclusively a 'boutique' wine region, there is no lack of prize winners. In the last decade local wines have won many hundreds of prestigious prizes both in Australia and overseas and the reputation continually grows.

Here is an opportunity to discover 'The Tranquil Side of the Hunter' for yourself, and form a relationship with the friendly owners of some of the Hunter's best cellar doors, in one of the most picturesque regions in Australia.

Che sta per essere un buon weekend! Buon Appetitio!! (It’s going to be a good weekend, have a great meal!)

Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing

tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia.

There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia.  New murals are currently underway.  Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find.

To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.

March Exhibitions at CRAGOur latest exhibition Maps - you are here, is a unique display of embroidered maps from eleven of our finest female practitioners that runs until 16th March. This exhibition marks a revival of the craft of map embroidery, a popular pastime for women and children until the middle of the nineteenth century.Captain Cook’s wife Elizabeth was a keen embroiderer of maps and it was her depiction of the Western Hemisphere, held by the Maritime Museum in Sydney, that provided the impetus for this exhibition. This exhibition will be followed by Reflections on the Hunter, an exploration of the region by artists Brian Roberts and Shirley Cameron-Roberts.Join us for the free opening of Reflections on the Hunter on Saturday 22nd March at 2pm, or drop in anytime to view the exhibition.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám: Work by Tallulah CunninghamThis remarkable exhibition combines two passions of the artist: that of sharing the Rubaiyat itself and that of illustrating the natural world. These exquisite illustrations are hand drawn onto two four metre length scrolls. They offer a visual translation, set for the first time in the Hunter Valley, based on the poems of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám, translated in the Victorian Age by Edward FitzGerald – a feat unto itself! From Newcastle Harbour, inland through wineries and agricultural plains, through the national parks and mining towns, detailed depictions of lizards and flowers endemic to the landscape brush shoulders with weed species and landmark buildings. In so doing they give new visual symbols to poems that have inspired for generations. The subject of Tallulah Cunningham’s PhD in Natural History Illustration at Newcastle University, these scrolls have been delicately made in Japan using traditional techniques. This is a rare opportunity to not only learn poetry through the fine arts, but to also be inspired by the extraordinary workmanship that has gone into their fabrication. Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style.

It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place.

Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and

craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town.

You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth.

A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking.

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town.

Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's

most notorious criminals.

Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

What to See & Do■ Morpeth is National Trust classified, so take one of the Heritage Walks - enjoy the colorful history of Morpeth and its characters - in a living museum of Australia’s past.

■ The streets of Morpeth are home to over 40 specialty shops and boutiques. Browse the gift shops, antique shops, galleries, lolly shops, a tea house, ginger beer factory and bakery.

■ Visit the Morpeth Museum housed in the old Court House built in 1862.

Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford

There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days

of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo

olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.

For more information please go to www.apvt.com.au

What to See & Do■ Treat yourself to Sunday morning brunch at the CBC cafe.

■ Sample superior oils and preserves at Bunna Bunoo olive grove.

■ Experience Camyr Allyn’s inviting cellar door and beautiful surrounds.

■ Pack a picnic and head to Lostock dam.
