Newsletter / Cylchlythyr November 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

I am pleased to say our pupils are well underway with their studies this half term and as expected, are

working hard. As ever we have much to celebrate at Newbridge School.

Year 11 sat their GCSE mathematics examinations on November 4th and 10th. I am very proud of how

well they prepared for and approached the examinations. All pupils came out of the examinations feeling

positive and we look forward now to their results in January. This week Year 11 engineering students sat

an on-line examination for their course and again are very positive about it. These are good signs for our

pupils’ results in 2016.

Year 7 is settling very well and we were delighted to see so many Year 7 parents and carers at our Year 7

‘Settling-In Evening’ just before half term. Mr. Bool and his team of tutors were pleased to meet and talk

with you. I am sure parents were as proud as we were with the performances given by Year 7 pupils on

the evening, whether singing, music or a presentation. All were superb.

PRIZE EVENING – WEDNESDAY 4TH NOVEMBER

Our guest speakers this year were our senior prefects, Nicole Woodward and Iwan Burgwin, Head Boy and Girl, deputies Sam Kerr, Ellis Potter, Finley Hazell, Emily Powell, Mollie Jones and Bethany Coles.

At our Prize Evening before half term, we welcomed over 500 parents and families to celebrate the

success of 250 prize winners. Governors, staff and I were very proud of our pupils, including our Senior

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

Anti-bullying week is held at this time of year nationally. We do not tolerate bullying in any form in our

school. We reinforce this message in school, this year through anti-bullying week assemblies. Above all

our pupils are encouraged to think about the kind of people they should be: kind, caring and thoughtful

towards each other. They are reminded of the words of Jesus in the Bible – ‘Love One Another’ and

‘Blessed are the Peacemakers’.

Pupils are reminded of helplines they can access should they ever wish to talk confidentially. The 2 we

have shared with pupils are ‘Meic’ (Welsh Helpline) and ‘ChildLine’ (England and Wales). These are

enclosed here.

We have offered our pupils the opportunity to take part in a national anti-bullying competition, called ‘Make

a Noise about Bullying’, encouraging the idea that no-one should ever suffer in silence or allow anyone

else to do so. Pupils can produce a poster, poem, story, artwork or short 2 minute film. The deadline is

December 4th and we look forward to entries. These will be judged by myself and Governors.

In our assemblies pupils were reminded of the worst type of bullying in our world today, terrorism. A minute silence has been held in all assemblies for the victims of terrorist attacks in Paris.

KEEPING SAFE – ANTI BULLYING

We have a ‘Keeping Safe’ box in the library and every classroom where pupil concerns may be posted anonymously. These are checked by two members of the School Council

Above are examples of past competition entries

OBSERVING LESSONS IN SCHOOL

Senior staff and I visit lessons regularly to see how our pupils are progressing. Since the start of the half

term we have visited English, Mathematics, Science, Welsh, French, Design Technology, Art, PE, Music

and Drama and all year groups. We also visit registration to see how pupils are getting on with their

registration literacy and numeracy sessions.

As expected, we have seen varied and interesting learning taking place. In French Year 7 were learning

the words for relatives and families. In Welsh pupils were working together to hold conversations in the

language. GCSE geography pupils were finding out about flooding, its causes and how to address it.

GCSE Biology students were revising respiration and in physics, were learning about forces and how they

work. In music pupils are preparing their own compositions and in drama, Year 10 are working on

devising their own performances for their examination. As always there is a lot of excellent learning going

on in our busy and thriving school and I am very proud of this.

CAREERS FAIR COMPETITION WINNER

Jacques Doyle-Pearce entered and won a competition when he attended our Year 10 Careers Fair in Cardiff. Jacques won a £10 Amazon voucher. Well done!

CHARITY ACTIVITIES

Charity Concert

To support our charity work we run a series of non-uniform days where pupils and staff bring £1.00 to wear non-uniform. We thank parents and carers for your support in our fund-raising activities.

Mr. Carey, our Head of Music, organised a charity concert during school time to raise funds and awareness of the refugee crisis in war-torn Syria. Some of the distressing TV images affected staff and pupils alike. A number of pupils and staff worked very hard to organise a concert in aid of this crisis and raised £400 through our non-uniform. Funds are also used to buy Christmas chocolates for the elderly in our community.

We would like to thank all performers for such a good entertaining event. Most pupils sang a song of their choice, some modern music, some songs from musicals.

MacMillan Cake Sale

We hold this event every year, kindly organised by Mrs Davies, Head of Art.

The Macmillan cake sale was a huge success. Canteen staff were involved with baking cakes early on that morning and helped support the sale during the break time for all pupils. Pupils in Year 11 helped serve staff during the lunchtime cake and coffee experience. We raised £210!

Samaritan Purse Shoebox Appeal Samaritan’s Purse UK is an international relief and development organisation that works through local churches. This charity activity invited pupils to take part in their ‘shoebox appeal’ and organise a shoebox of small gifts that will become a Christmas gift for a child in a developing part of the world, particularly Africa and parts of Asia and particularly in an area suffering from war, famine or natural disaster. This charity is Christian based and emphasises the Christian belief to ‘love one another’, based on the command of Jesus in the New Testament. Ms. Fitzgerald, one of our excellent science teachers, has organised this activity. Newbridge School made 168 shoeboxes!

ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS

Governors and I would like to remind you of the importance of your child attending school regularly. All learners should be aiming for a 100% attendance. As a school we adhere to the Caerphilly Borough Council attendance guidelines which can be found at the following web address: ‘www.caerphilly.gov.uk/Services/Schools-and-learning/Attendance-and-inclusion/Attendance-at-school ‘ When learners are not in school, they miss not only valuable classwork but also the actual teaching and learning experiences as given by our staff. Simply copying up after an absence does not mean that tasks will be understood. If a child’s absences increase, the amount of learning missed increases too and this puts added pressure on learners and makes reaching their target levels and grades more difficult. In order to understand the impact of attendance I have included the following table which shows how many days are lost with different attendance rates:

Percentage Attendance Number of days missed Number of lessons missed

100 0 0

95 10 50

90 19 95

85 28 140

80 38 190

70 57 285

60 76 380

50 95 475

40 114 570

In Key Stage Four, which we now start in Year 9, in core subjects, GCSE and Btec option subjects, vital information and skills are covered in every lesson, whether this be course content, examination, controlled assessment or assignment preparation or practicing examination techniques. These are all part of ensuring success in the final assessment of courses taken. Attendance is an important aspect of reference requests from colleges and employers so it has far reaching effects, even after learners have left Newbridge School. All parents and carers are asked to work with us to ensure your child attends school every day. As the Caerphilly Borough guidelines state, all medical appointments, dental appointments etc. should be taken outside of school hours wherever possible and holidays should not be taken in term time. All requests for holidays in term time will be reviewed before permission may be granted. Holidays for learners with less than 95% attendance will not be authorised. The school’s absence number is 01495 241891 and it is extremely important that messages are sent to school if your child really has to be absent. If a child is absent without a message received from you, you will receive a text message asking you to give the reason for absence. Attendance is reviewed on a daily basis and should we be concerned about absences then you will be contacted by your child’s Progress Leader. When learners are absent through illness we do not employ a set number of days for recovery (as is done in some primary schools). We expect learners to return as soon as possible.

NEWBRIDGE SCHOOL / YSGOL TRECELYN CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE / CANOLFAN RAGORIAETH

16

If a learner feels unwell we would prefer they still come into school. Very often once leaners are in school and engaged in their learning they feel better. We will of course send your child home if they really are poorly. The school also employs a system whereby you will be asked to explain any unauthorised attendances by completing an ‘attendance sticker’ in your child’s planner. It is vital these are completed, so that your child does not have an attendance record that includes unauthorised absence. Punctuality is also extremely important. School starts at 8.30 and all pupils must be on site before this time for a prompt start to registration. Evidence provided by Caerphilly Borough Council shows that a leaner who is five minutes late on a daily basis loses almost four days of teaching a year. This rises to almost 14 days a year for a learner who is 20 minutes late. During registration periods there are sessions taking place to improve the literacy and numeracy of some learners as well as assemblies where important information is disseminated to pupils. Being in school on time in the morning means a good foundation for the learning that takes place throughout the rest of the school day. If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance please do not hesitate to contact your Progress Leader. Should a child’s attendance be of concern to us, you will be required to attend a meeting in school. Should attendance be of significant concern, the Education Welfare Officer will visit your home. This may lead to a fixed penalty fine or even prosecution. We do not want to see this happen we want every child in school, learning, every day. Our aim is that each child attends school every day – 100% attendance. Many children achieve this, as you can see in our current list of pupils with 100% attendance so far this term.
