Dear Friends of the N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc.,I would like to introduce myself: I am Steven M. Bieda, president of the N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc. I am married to my lovely wife Chris and we have one daughter Marissa. I have been a Green Bay resident my entire life. I grew up of the west side of Green Bay and graduated from West High School in 1987. I went to NWTC and gained an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1989. I was employed by Mau & Associates, LLP., Land Surveying & Civil Engineering as a Land Surveyor right after college. I worked there for about 10 years and became a partner at Mau in 1999. I took over as the managing partner upon the retirement of Dave Mau in 2006.

I have to give credit to our former president of 15 years, Mrs. Judy Krawczyk. Her love and affinity for the N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc. and the NEW Zoo has been never-ending. After taking over the presidency from her, I can appreciate even more, all the hours she must have put in to keep things in such great order. There is much to do to keep things running at their highest level and I am up to the challenge to fill her shoes. Judy, just don’t go too far from your phone, I have used it quite a few times already and am sure you’re not completely off the hook yet! (No pun intended) Thank you, Judy for all the years you have dedicated to this group!

Hopefully you have all had the chance to visit our brand new Education Building. It is a fantastic building and brings many educational opportunities for the community to the NEW Zoo. I have to give credit to Mrs. Judy Krawczyk for she was our rock star leader when it came to getting that project off the ground. She was able to generate the funds needed to get the project built. I am excited to announce this building will be paid in full when the remaining pledges are received.

We have broken ground on our new Animal Hospital and it is an exciting time for our group. We have reached our first goal in our fundraising efforts for the hospital and have enough money committed to get our building constructed. We have a long way to go to reach our $1.3 million dollar goal, but we will get there with the support of the community. Our site has been cleared, our building plans are complete, permits have been attained, and on July 7th, 2014, we will be “Laying the foundation” for our new Animal Hospital.

The N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc. is a separate entity from the NEW Zoo. We are the funding arm and give financial support of the NEW Zoo. The NEW Zoo needs support from outside sources such as the Society, so that it can continue to keep its accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and continue to function WITHOUT local tax dollars.

It is hard to believe that another year has passed and we are into 2014. Your NEW Zoo finished the year with an attendance number of 218,973 and we had a great year despite the state of the economy and not to mention the very wet spring and fall. The recent road construction project on Highway 41 also appeared to have an impact on return visitors. The Zoo also remained self-funded and ended the year with revenue exceeding expenses. That is a tremendous accomplishment being that the zoo is 1 of only 8 of the 226 AZA accredited zoos & aquariums in North America that is self-funded (receiving no tax support) and the only one that does not have operational support from an endowment fund. Most zoos are about 60% self-funded. We truly are working with and towards a sustainable zoo business model. Being sustainable means we are truly living within our means and a reflection of the support from the community. The Zoo also attained Travel Green certified thru the State of Wisconsin and the 1st Zoo in the state to achieve this honor. The Zoo also received for the 2nd year in a row Trip Advisors Certificate of Excellence as a 2013 winner based on the ratings by guests on Trip Advisor. Congratulations to all who made this a reality and a most significant achievement for a zoo and its community.

The N.E.W. Zoological Society is our support organization and I like to say a Zoo Director’s best friend. The Zoo Society is continually raising funds for new capital improvements as well as helping out with operational support in some areas. Without a support organization, we would lack the connection to the fiscal support and fundraising opportunities within the community that we reside.

The Zoo Society has begun the fundraising efforts to replace the current animal hospital with a new and modern hospital that will serve the zoo for the next 20 years. The current animal hospital was constructed over twenty years ago and has served the early growth of the Zoo. Fundraising is underway and a groundbreaking ceremony was held in December. It is anticipated that this project’s 1st phase will be completed in 2014. Along with the new animal hospital, the existing animal hospital will be renovated to expand our current zoo commissary operations with additional visitor viewing opportunities as staff prepares the daily animal collection diets.

A new and exciting major attraction next to the Zoo in the Reforestation Camp began construction in 2013. The new “Adventure Park “ has opened in May of 2014 and will feature dueling 1,000 foot long zip lines, an aerial ropes challenge course,

and a climbing wall where visitors will be able to test and challenge themselves with these exciting outdoor adventures.

Along with the new and improved buildings and attractions, the zoos also renovated and update several infrastructure items which included a new recycled plastic fenced Fallow deer exhibit, a new roof and HVAC for the Visitor Center and new blacktop repair and replacement in the Zoo. Work also began in 2013 to completely renovate the entire Children’s Zoo and was completed in the spring of 2014.

All areas of the Zoo saw significant accomplishments in 2013 and are listed in our annual report. As you can see, 2013 was a very busy year for staff and volunteers. Congratulations and thank you for all their hard work and efforts to continue to provide the community with a high quality zoo experience as well as maintaining the highest standards of our industry.

The NEW Zoo supports the community in many ways. The zoo has a deep commitment to science, education and wildlife conservation, but it also generates valuable economic benefits to the region. It is a great investment for anyone interested in making a difference in their community. Each year we renew our commitment to the community by putting the “new” in the NEW Zoo, growing within our means and providing the community with a zoo they can be proud of.

In closing I would like to thank you for your support and investment in your NEW Zoo. Remember, you have a self-funded zoo unlike any other and it is only thru your support that we can continue to reflect your community pride. Please, if you haven’t or know someone who would like to make an investment contact our Zoo Society. We have a lot of plans but we need continued involvement from year to year with funding new exhibits (many new exhibits are planned and waiting for the right donor) as well as operations. Involvement will help us move from a “good zoo” to a “Great Zoo”!

BRICK PROGRAMThe Society updated and improved on the brick program, at the zoo, three years ago. Today all engraved bricks are placed in stainless steel frames, off the ground, at the entrances of our animal exhibits. The laser engraved bricks wear better and can be seen year round.

Personalized bricks make great gifts for a birthday, wedding, anniversary, employee or boss appreciation, pet appreciation, remembering a loved one, or for the person who has everything. Purchasing a personalized brick will help build the NEW Zoo and serve as a memorial for all to enjoy.

The N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc. relies on brick sales to help offset the costs of operating expenses.

MEMORIAL BENCHES PROGRAMNATURAL RIVER ROCK BENCHThe hand crafted natural river rock bench is designed of two natural river rocks and a hand polished granite seat 39” x 16” x18”. The raised arm of the bench is the perfect place to have a loved one’s name engraved.The cost of the bench is $1800.00 which includes up to 20 engraved letters.

NEW GRANITE GARDEN BENCHHand-carved from natural stone bench has a polished seat with a natural rock face finish. This bench measures 39” x 15” x 18”H and the color options vary depending on availability. Engraved lettering will be showcased on the seat.The cost of the bench is $1200.00 which includes up to 15 engraved letters.* Both benches can be placed at the zoo in an area of your choice for all to enjoy. ENDOWMENT FUND PROGRAMThe Society established this fund to ensure that the growth and quality of the NEW Zoo will continue to expand well into the future. The principal of any gift to this fund will not be spent as long as the zoo is in existence. The earnings, invested through the combined efforts of local investment institutions, will be used as needed to support the mission of the Society.

CONSERVATION GRANT PROGRAMThe N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc. along with the NEW Zoo proudly introduced the Conservation Grant Program in 2007. Each year grant monies are awarded to qualified individuals/projects that will support wildlife conservation, education, and research efforts world-wide. A committee evaluates all applications and awards monies to these projects dedicated to results-based solutions.

14TH ANNUAL “FEAST WITH THE BEASTS” EVENT

Each year the Society partners with the Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) to bring a very popular event to the NEW Zoo. In 2013 Pioneer Credit Union presented the 14th annual “Feast with the Beasts” event that was held on August 5th. The event was from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and featured approximately 40 food, beverage, and music vendors, located throughout the zoo. Our guests wined & dined while strolling through the beautiful zoo, listening to music, and visiting with their favorite animals. The cost of the ticket was $30.00 and the proceeds benefited the WRA-Green Bay Chapter and the Society’s Education fund. To date the Society’s portion of the Feast proceeds have totaled close to $140,000.00. Our 15th Annual is all set for Monday, August 4th, 2014. Come out and see what it is all about! 1st Annual “Skunks are Beautiful” Cribbage Tournament

On Thursday, April 18th, 2013 the Society hosted its first annual “Skunks are Beautiful” Cribbage Tournament. The event took place in the ski lodge at the NEW Zoo. 46 two man/woman teams ate dinner, enjoyed beverages, and played cribbage from 7:00p.m.until 10:00p.m. The evening included three 50/50 raffles, silent auction items, complimentary dinner and popcorn, payouts to the top 10 teams, and a whole lot of fun. The proceeds from this event helped to fund the Society’s Operating fund. We hope to build on this event each year. Thank you to our wonderful sponsors!

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2013: ELIZABETH BOMBER

My name is Elizabeth Bomber and I have been volunteering at the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park for five and a half years. My adult children moved out of state and I found myself a little lost and looking for something to fill the void I felt with my kids so far away. My husband and I love animals and visit the Zoo often. During one of those visits I noticed the We Love our Volunteers sign up on the Visitor Center. That sign set the wheels in motion and I decided that this was something I would love to do. I have been visiting the Zoo all of my life, since before it was even called a Zoo. We just called it the Reforestation Camp back then! I have great memories of my visits and thought that being a part of the Zoo’s success would be a great way to feel needed again. Well let me tell you, being a New Zoo & Adventure Park Volunteer has exceeded my expectations!! Not only do I feel needed, I feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I’m making a difference.

My main volunteering time is done with the Giraffe Feeding Experience. I sell the food to guests and, while they feed and interact with Hodari and Zuri, I answer any questions they ask. Even some that they don’t think to ask. I always tell my friends, “I don’t know much about a lot of things, but you can ask me almost anything about giraffes!” I also help out where ever I’m needed at any given time. I love helping at the events, especially Zoo Boo! I have done some office work, run the Carousel, and I’ve done some cleaning and raking too! The bottom line is that the Zoo is my Happy Place! I have a fulltime job and I can’t wait for that time when I can retire so I can spend a lot more time in my Happy Place!

Last but not least. I have met so many wonderful people at the Zoo that I now count as my friends. I can’t say enough about my “Zoo Friends”. From Zoo staff to fellow Volunteers and even Zoo guests, I feel my life has been enriched beyond words. Getting the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park Volunteer of the Year Award was a great surprise and the ultimate thank you! But it is I who thank them for allowing me to be part of the New Zoo & Adventure Park family!
