Mead Shumway, con- rioted of the murder of Mrs. Jacob Martin, was hanged this afternoon at the Nebraska Peniten- tiary. He walked calmly to the scaffold, protesting his innocence before the death march began. Shumway has escaped death five tlmt-s since his original sentence, and futile efforts wore made to-day to .stay the execution. He was con- victed of the brutal murder of the aged wife of Jacob Martin, a farmer. n*>ar Adams, Neb., on the afternoon Of September 3, 1»T. during the absence of her husband. It Is supposed he demanded from, the woman, whr> was somewhat feeble, that she turn over to him a considerable sum of money known to have been in the house.
