Today's Game

The Rangers face-off against the Washington Capitals tonight at Madison Square Garden in Game Three of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals (7:00 p.m.). On Saturday, the Rangers defeated the Capitals, 1-0, in Game Two, marking the third consecutive season that the Blueshirts have taken a 2-0 lead in a post-season series on the road. New York enters today's game with a 196-208-8 all-time record in its previous 412 playoff contests, including a 108-80-2 mark at home. The Blueshirts have posted a 32-41 record all-time in Game Three's of post-season series.

The Blueshirts entered the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs after going 43-30-9 (95 points) in the regular season, marking only the second time in franchise history the club has posted 40-plus wins in four consecutive seasons (1970-71 to 1973-74). The Rangers are participating in post-season play for the fourth consecutive season, and 12th time since 1988-89. New York is one of only two Eastern Conference teams to have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last four years.

April 15, 2009 : Rangers 4 at Capitals 3: After a scoreless first period, the Capitals got on the board first with a power play goal by Tomas Fleischmann at 6:40 of the second. The Rangers responded a minute later with an unassisted tally by Scott Gomez (one goal and two assists) to tie the game at one apiece. New York notched two straight power play goals, the first by Nik Antropov (one goal and one assist) at 16:49 and the second from Markus Naslund (one goal and one assist) at 18:28, to open a two-goal lead over Washington in the middle frame. Viktor Kozlov cut the Rangers' lead in half in the closing minute of the second period, and Alexander Semin brought the Capitals even with a power play tally at 1:42 of the third period. Later in the final frame, Brandon Dubinsky notched the go-ahead goal and Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves to lead New York to a Game One victory. Defensemen Paul Mara and Wade Redden also collected one power play assist each for the Rangers.

Brandon Dubinsky (two goals) responded with his first of two goals in the period, a power play tally, at 8:07. Jeff Carter gave the Flyers their second lead of the game with a power play goal of his own at 12:36 of the first, but Dubinsky’s second goal of the period, a shorthanded tally two minutes and 11 seconds later, tied the game at two goals apiece heading into the middle frame. April 9, 2009 : Rangers 2 vs. Flyers 1: The Blueshirts opened the game's scoring early with a goal 52 seconds into the first by Markus Naslund, from Ryan Callahan (one goal and one assist) and Chris Drury (two assists). Callahan increased New York's lead to two with a goal at 12:06 of the opening frame. April 7, 2009 : Rangers 3 vs. Canadiens 1: The Rangers honored Ryan Callahan as the 2008-09 Steven McDonald Award winner in a pre-game ceremony, and then went on to set a career-high with two assists to help lead the Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Canadiens at MSG. Chris Drury (two goals) opened the game's scoring at 13:14 of the first period, but Montreal responded three minutes later to tie the game heading into the middle frame. Nik Antropov re-claimed the lead for the Blueshirts at 2:37 of the second, and Drury notched his second goal of the game later in the period to give New York a two-goal advantage. Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves in net to protect the lead and give the Rangers their 13th win in 19 games at MSG. Sean Avery and Markus Naslund also collected one assist each for New York.

April 4, 2009 : Rangers 0 at Bruins 1: The Blueshirts held the Bruins without a shot until 9:04 of the first period, but Blake Wheeler converted on Boston's first shot to grab the early lead. Henrik Lundqvist recovered to stop the remaining Boston shots, making 23 saves in the contest. The Rangers were unable to tie the score, however, as the Bruins' Tim Thomas stopped all 31 shots faced to hand New York the loss.

April 2, 2009 : Rangers 2 at Hurricanes 4: Eric Staal (one goal and one assist) opened the game's scoring at 4:28 of the first period, but Rangers' rookie defenseman Corey Potter responded with his first career goal late in the opening frame. Carolina took their second lead of the contest at 6:32 of the middle frame with Chad LaRose's (two goals) first goal of the game. Dan Girardi notched a power play goal at 14:21 of the second to tie the game at two goals apiece heading into the final frame. In the third, the Hurricanes notched two goals in 28 seconds and held on to take the victory. Henrik Lundqvist made 19 saves in net, and Paul Mara tallied two assists. Scott Gomez and Ryan Callahan also collected one assist each for the Rangers.

2008-09 Regular Season Series vs. WashingtonThe Rangers went 1-2-1 in four regular season games against Washington, including an 0-2-0 record at the Verizon Center. The Blueshirts defeated the Capitals, 5-4, in the shootout on February 11 at Madison Square Garden in their final meeting of the regular season, with Ryan Callahan tallying the game-deciding goal in the fourth round of the shootout. Callahan led the Rangers with three goals and four points in four games vs. Washington this season. Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky and Scott Gomez tied for the team lead with three assists apiece in the season series. In three appearances vs. the Capitals this season, Henrik Lundqvist posted a 1-1-1 record, along with a 3.57 goals against average and an .882 save percentage, while Steve Valiquette was 0-1-0 with a 2.03 goals against average and .935 save percentage in one appearance.

February 11, 2009 : Rangers 5 vs. Capitals 4 (SO): The Rangers and Capitals each held the lead twice through regulation/overtime, and New York took the victory in the fourth round of the shootout to snap a five-game losing streak. Ryan Callahan (one goal and one assist) opened the scoring at 7:33 of the first period, but the Capitals responded with two goals to close out the opening frame with a one-goal advantage. Lauri Korpikoski (one goal and one assist) tied the game at two-goals apiece mid-way through the second, off a feed from Marc Staal and Ryan Callahan. Mike Green (two goals) gave Washington their second lead of the game less than two minutes later, but the Blueshirts answered with two straight goals from Markus Naslund and Paul Mara. Green tallied his second goal of the game with 58 seconds remaining in the

second period to tie the game at 4-4. After a scoreless third and overtime period, Nigel Dawes (one assist) and Callahan converted in the shootout to give the Rangers the win. Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves through regulation/overtime and stopped three of four shootout attempts for New York. Scott Gomez also recorded two assists, and Brandon Dubinsky collected one assist.

Mike Green responded 79 seconds later with a power play tally, and Alexander Ovechkin gave the Capitals the lead with a shorthanded goal in the final minute of the second period. Brandon Dubinsky and Nikolai Zherdev each recorded an assist for the Blueshirts, and Steve Valiquette stopped 29 shots in net.

December 23, 2008 : Rangers 4 vs. Capitals 5 (OT): The Rangers took an early lead with a Markus Naslund tally, off a feed from Nikolai Zherdev and Scott Gomez, just 3:38 into the game. Michal Rozsival and Ryan Callahan (two goals) extended New York's advantage with two goals in an 11-second span mid-way through the first to chase Jose Theodore (21 saves) from the Capitals' net. Theodore returned to the game to begin the second period, and Callahan netted his second of the game at 4:48 of the frame. Washington's Alexander Ovechkin (two goals and one assist) responded with a goal off a deflection at 12:35 of the second period, and the Capitals notched three, third period goals to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Shaone Morrisonn tallied the game-winner to complete Washington's comeback. Chris Drury recorded three assists, Nigel Dawes finished with two assists and Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves for the Rangers.

November 8, 2008 : Rangers 1 at Capitals 3: The Capitals opened a two-goal lead with first period goals by Brooks Laich and Tom Poti. After a scoreless middle frame, the Rangers cut the deficit in half with an Aaron Voros power play goal at 6:27 of the third period. Three minutes later, Chris Drury was awarded a penalty shot while shorthanded, but was unable to convert the attempt. Alexander Semin (one goal and one assist) tallied an empty net goal in the closing seconds to hand the Blueshirts their third defeat in the last four games. Note of the DayHoping for history – Washington, which last year became the first team in NHL history to make the playoffs after being 14th or 15th in its conference at midseason, is hoping to make some more history in this playoff series. Teams have trailed 2-0 in a best-of-seven series a total of 291 times and have come back to win the series on 37 occasions or 12.7% of the time. The Capitals have never pulled off such a comeback; in fact, the four times Washington has fallen behind 2-0 in a series it has lost Game 3 as well. Carolina and Edmonton both erased 2-0 deficits on their way to the 2006 Stanley Cup Final; 17 teams have gone up 2-0 in a playoff series since then and each has won the series.

Five More Notes No Media Person Should Be WithoutGamers – The Capitals are 10-19 all-time in playoff Game 3s, including a 7-9 record on the road and an 0-4 record when trailing in the series, 2-0.

Site of a comeback – The Capitals hope to climb back in the series at the site of one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history. Dec. 23 of this year Washington erased a 4-0 deficit to win, 5-4 in overtime, just the fourth time in franchise history that the Capitals came back from 4-0 to win and the first time since 1991. Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist, Nicklas Backstrom had three assists and Shaone Morrisonn, playing on his birthday, had the overtime winner. It was the only time the Rangers have ever lost after leading 4-0 at home.

Youth served – Capitals goaltender Simeon Varlamov became the 19th goalie in NHL history to make his playoff debut before his 21st birthday Saturday afternoon and stopped 23 of 24 shots (.958). It was the first regulation loss of Varlamov's career, as he was 4-0-1 in the regular season. His combined regular season and playoff save percentage is .923 and GAA is 2.16.

Varlamov was just the fourth Capitals rookie to start a playoff game in goal (Jim Carey, Byron Dafoe and Bob Mason) and had the least regular-season experience for an NHL playoff starter (6 GP) since Miikka Kiprusoff in 2001 for San Jose (5 GP).

Face it – Washington has won 61.9% of the faceoffs in Games 1 and 2, tops in the NHL. Nicklas Backstrom, who had a 48.7% success rate in the regular season (but 52.3% after the All-Star Game) is 70.3% in this series, good for second in the NHL.

Shooting stars – Washington has fired 35 shots on goal and outshot the Rangers by at least 11 shots in each of the first two games, a total of 70-45.

Washington's 35-21 shot advantage in Game 1 was its most lopsided shot total in the playoffs since Game 6 of 2003, when the Capitals outshot Tampa Bay 61-46 in a three overtime game. It matched the most lopsided shot advantage for the Caps in a regulation game since a 2-1 Buffalo win in Game 5 of the 1998 Eastern Conference Finals, in which the Capitals outshot the Sabres 35-16.

More Caps Notes8's stage – Alex Ovechkin led the Capitals in shots and hits in both Game 1 and 2. He was named the first star Wednesday night after recording two assists, 13 shots on goal, six hits, a +1 rating and 26:07 of ice time. Ovechkin has had multiple-point games in five of the nine playoff games he has played in his career. Last season against Philadelphia Ovechkin had the game-winning goal in his first playoff game, added another game-winner in Game 6 and finished tied for second in league scoring in round one with nine points (4g-5a) in 7 GP.

Blank stare – The shutout in Game 2 marked the first time in 42 games that Washington was shut out (since Jan. 9 vs. Columbus). It was the 10th time the Capitals have been shut out in the playoffs; they have won three of the previous nine series in which they were shut out in a game.

First-timers – Washington's first two goals in Game 1 were the first playoff goals of Tomas Fleischmann and Viktor Kozlov's careers.

Power broker – Including the regular season, the Capitals have converted on 24% of their power plays against the Rangers this year (6-for-25).

Three for one – Alex Ovechkin (11 points in 9 GP), Alexander Semin and Mike Green (9 points in 9 GP) are all averaging a point per game in their playoff careers. It's an admittedly small sample for that trio, but worth noting that Joe Sakic is the only NHL player with at least 50 playoff points who has a point per playoff game in his career.

Going Green – Mike Green, whose 31 goals in the regular season were eight more than any other NHL defenseman, had three more goals than any Rangers player in the regular season. Green has five goals against the Rangers in his career, including two overtime goals in 2007-08.

Style guys – This series pits the No. 3 scoring team in the NHL (Washington, 3.29 goals per game) against the No. 6 defensive team (New York, 2.58 goals against per game). Washington ranked tied for 19th on defense, while the Rangers finished 28th offensively.

There are similar dichotomies on special teams, where Washington's second-ranked power play (a club-record 25.2%) will face the best penalty kill in the league (87.8%). The Capitals scored on four of 15 power-play opportunities against the Rangers in the regular season (26.7%).

Back for more – The Capitals are back in the playoffs for the second year in a row, their first consecutive trips since 1999-00 and 2000-01. Whereas everyone who played for Washington in last year's playoffs was making their Capitals postseason debut, Brian Pothier, Jose Theodore and Simeon Varlamov are the only players to make their Capitals playoff debuts this year.

One-Timers– This marked the first season in franchise history in which Washington did not make a trade

John Tortorella

Notes: Is in his first season with the Rangers after being named the 34th Head Coach in the team's 83-year history on February 23, 2009. He returns to the organization after serving as Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning for seven seasons. Under his guidance, Tampa Bay compiled a 239-222-36-38 record in 535 games. He led the Lightning to four consecutive Stanley Cup Playoff appearances, including two Southeast Division Championships in 2002-03 and 2003-04. In 2003-04, Tortorella guided Tampa Bay to a franchise record 46 wins and 106 points, and went on to capture the club’s first Stanley Cup Championship. He was awarded the Jack Adams Award as the National Hockey League’s top coach following that season.

Tortorella joined Tampa Bay following a one-year stint with the Rangers in 1999-2000 where he was an Assistant Coach and served as Head Coach for the final four games of the season. Prior to joining the Rangers, he spent two seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Phoenix Coyotes. He joined Phoenix during the 1997-98 season, after spending the previous eight seasons with the Buffalo Sabres organization. Tortorella served as an Assistant Coach with the Sabres from 1989-90 to 1994-95 and as Head Coach with their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Rochester Americans, during the 1995-96 and 1996-97 campaigns. He guided the club to the Calder Cup championship in 1995-96.
