CoolingHigherpowerbladeserversandotherequipmentroutinelydeployedbyfinancialservicesparticipantscreatedemandingandsophisticatedcoolingrequirements.Equinix’srobustHeating/Ventilation/AirConditioning(HVAC)systemisakeydifferentiatingfeatureofthepremiuminfrastructureatourIBXcenters.EachIBXiscompletelyfittedforprecisionHVACsystemstoprovideoptimumconditionsforequipmentoperationandtominimizedowntimeduetoequipmentfailure.TheHVACsystemprovidesappropriateairflow,temperatureandhumidityrequiredtoprovideoptimalconditionsforyourequipment.Thereare21airhandlersremovingandfilteringallhotairfromthecolocationfloor.TheseairhandlersN+4redundantdesign,meaningtherearefourseparatebackupsystemstopreventfailure.
Thecoolingsystemutilizeselectricwater-cooledcentrifugal-compressorchillersinanN+1configuration.Chilledwaterisdeliveredtomultiplecentralstationair-handlingunitsviatwoclosedloopsthatrunhorizontallyoutsideofeachsideofthecolocationfloor.Coolingsystemcomponentsandsubsystemsaredistributedacrosstheindependentbusessothatanindividualbusfailuredoesnotimpairfullcoolingcapacityandoperation.Reservewaterisstoredinanabovegroundreservestoragetank.
Fire Detection and SuppressionEquinixIBXcentersareconstructedwithcutting-edgefiredetectionandsuppressionsystemsthatlimitthepotentialfordamageintheeventofafire.Keyfeaturesofthefiredetectionandsuppressionsystemincludemulti-zoned,drypipe,water-basedfiresuppressionsystemswithsensorymechanisms(sniffers)anddualalarms(heatand/orsmokeactivation).Inorderforthesystemtotrip,multiplecross-linkedeventsmustoccur.Theseincludedetectionbyceilingmountedsmoke-headsandsmoke“sniffers”locatedthroughoutthefacility.Lastlyasprinklerheadvalvemustopeninorderforthedry-pipesystemtoactivate.Thisrequiresatemperatureof165degreesFattheheadlocation.
Waterentersthefiresuppressionsystemonlyintheeventoftwocross-zonealarms,andwillonlydisperseintheeventofabrokenormeltedsprinkler-head.Anywaterdischargeissprinkler-headspecific,limitingthepotentialfordamagecausedbyover-spray.
AdditionallytheIBXhasaveryearlysmokedetectionalarmsystem(VESDA).Thissystemmeasuresasampleofairatadjustableperiodsoftime.Ifthissampleisdifferentfromthereferencesamplethatthemachinehastaken,itwilltriggeranalarm.
Flood ControlEquinixIBXcentershavethefollowingfloodcontrolfeaturestoensurethat,intheeventofaflood,equipmentdamageisminimizedand/orprevented:
