Jackson is out in Philly — just as Mark Sanchez was on his way into town.

Unable to find a taker on the trade market, the Eagles released him, ending the Pro Bowl wide receiver's six-year stint with the team. His playmaking days are over in Philly, and the tailspin from key cog to unexpected free agent comes with a hint that off-field issues are at the root of the split.

Jackson thanked the Eagles organization and fans in a statement Friday, and also denied "unfounded reports" that he was released for any reason related to his lifestyle.

"I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang," Jackson said. "I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible. I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values.

"I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. These reports are irresponsible and just not true."

Before releasing Jackson, the Eagles announced they had signed Sanchez. Bounced out of New York after the Jets signed Michael Vick last week, Sanchez moved down turnpike to Philadelphia in what essentially was a swap with Vick.

"I think we passed each other on the train," Sanchez said, laughing.

Sanchez can wave goodbye to Jackson, too.

Jackson was coming off a career-best season in Philadelphia, leading the team with 82 catches for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns. He had a $10.25 million contract for the 2014 season and was signed through 2016.

"After careful consideration over this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to part ways with DeSean Jackson," the Eagles said in a statement.

The Eagles had no other comment. Jackson's agent, Joel Segal, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Jackson has 356 career receptions for 6,117 yards and 32 touchdowns. He's a dangerous returner who went to the Pro Bowl in 2009 after taking two punts the distance. Jackson has four career scores on punt returns, including the memorable 65-yard game-ending return to cap a comeback win over the New York Giants in 2010.

The 27-year-old receiver is entering his seventh NFL season.

The Eagles had been put out feelers that Jackson was available. Coach Chip Kelly refused to commit on Jackson's return at this week's NFL meetings.

But other teams could be quick to sign one of the NFL's top receivers.

Speaking at the NFL meetings, Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed interest in Jackson, saying: "We're looking at a number of players, including DeSean."

Jackson could be a showboat — memorably dropping the ball in celebration before the goal line after an apparent long touchdown — and upset the Eagles this season when he lobbied for a new contact shortly after they were eliminated in the playoffs. His departure leaves the Eagles with Riley Cooper, who survived a video scandal that showed him using the N-word at a concert, and Jeremy Maclin as the starting wide receivers.

"We just made an extremely unpopular decision, but I couldn't be more excited and happy with where this organization is going!! #FlyEaglesFly," offensive lineman Jason Kelce tweeted.

There's no locker room divide at quarterback.

Sanchez, in his sixth year in the league, will be added to a mix of quarterbacks that includes Nick Foles, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne. In college, Barkley succeeded Sanchez at Southern California.

"I'm not stirring up a controversy," Sanchez said at a news conference. "I'm here to help this team win."

While Vick will compete with Smith for the starting job in New York, Sanchez comes to Philadelphia as insurance. Foles had a breakout sophomore season and led the Eagles to the NFC East title after replacing an injured Vick in Week 5. Foles threw 29 touchdowns and only two interceptions in 11 starts, including a playoff loss to New Orleans.

The Eagles still have plenty of offensive playmakers, trading for running back Darren Sproles to go along with NFL rushing champion LeSean McCoy. The options were part of what made Philadelphia so appealing to Sanchez.

"This team, this coach, the kind of offensive firepower they have," Sanchez said, "it's just an exciting element to being here in Philadelphia."

Mark Sanchez likes the team, the coach, the offense. He's with the Philadelphia Eagles now in what essentially was a swap with Michael Vick.

Bounced out of New York after the Jets signed Vick last week, Sanchez has moved down turnpike and signed a one-year contract with the Eagles on Friday.

"I've said many times that we will always look to add quality players at the quarterback position," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said.

Kelly called the signing a "no-brainer."

"Mark has started 68 games in his career and has taken his teams deep into the playoffs multiple times, so we really like what he brings to the table from an experience standpoint," Kelly said. "I also had the chance to see Mark play in college and have always had respect for his game and athletic ability."

Sanchez spent last season on injured reserve after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder in a preseason game. He led the Jets to the AFC championship game his first two seasons in the NFL before struggling the next two. Sanchez had an NFL-leading 52 turnovers in 2012-13.

"This team, this coach, the kind of offensive firepower they have, it's just an exciting element to being here in Philadelphia," Sanchez said. "I think coach Kelly really is on the cutting edge of the NFL He's one of those guys that really has an exciting vision for the future. I think he is on a constant pursuit of a competitive edge."

Sanchez was the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft. He had seemingly beat out rookie Geno Smith for the starting job in a preseason competition last August before getting hurt.

Sanchez' departure in New York came as no surprise, but completed a stunning downfall for the quarterback who once drew comparisons to Joe Namath after helping lead the Jets to consecutive AFC title games in 2009 and 2010.

Sanchez struggled with consistency after that, and the lasting image of his time with the Jets came in 2012 when he fumbled after running into the backside of guard Brandon Moore. It was returned for a touchdown by New England's Steve Gregory in front of a national television audience on Thanksgiving night and infamously labeled "The Butt Fumble."

Sanchez's injury last year cleared the way for Smith to start every game. Sanchez had three years remaining on his contract, but his $13.1 million salary cap number for next season — and $2 million roster bonus due Tuesday — made it unlikely the team would keep him at that amount.

Sanchez has thrown 68 touchdown passes, 69 interceptions and lost 20 fumbles. His career completion percentage is just 55.1 and his passer rating is only 77.1.

"You can never have enough talent at the quarterback position on your roster, so when Mark became available we immediately became interested," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said.

Roseman pointed to Sanchez's "valuable experience."

"He'll have the chance to come in and learn the playbook," he said. "And we feel he'll be a nice veteran addition to the quarterback room."

Mark Sanchez signs deal with Philadelphia Eagles (Kimberley Martin) Newsday March 28, 2014

Mark Sanchez could have gone elsewhere, but he wanted to be a part of what Chip Kelly is building in Philadelphia.

Hours after signing his one-year deal with the Eagles -- that reportedly could be worth $4 million based on incentives -- a clean-shaven Sanchez addressed reporters during a news conference Friday at the team's facility.

Coincidentally, the Jets hosted a circuslike news conference for newly signed backup Tim Tebow two years ago. But Sanchez made it clear he didn't sign with Philly to make waves.

"Coming here, I'm not stirring up a controversy," he said. "I'm here to help the team win."

Sanchez -- who began the news conference by thanking the Eagles' front office and "everyone" on the Jets, including former general manager Mike Tannenbaum -- said he harbors "no hard feelings" for his former team.

"They've been so good to me," Sanchez said of the Jets, who released him a week ago in order to sign former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. "And it's been a different kind of transition, but some great memories there. Love that team, love that organization. And I'm happy to make the transition and excited to be in a new spot."

Sanchez, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft, will join a quarterback group composed of starter Nick Foles, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne, all of whom Sanchez already has relationships with. (He and Foles share the same agent; Sanchez hosted Barkley during his college visit to USC; and Kinne spent time with the Jets during their 2012 training camp.)

Sanchez stressed that he has the utmost respect for Foles, who supplanted Vick as the full-time starter last season. But like any quarterback, Sanchez said he believes he can be a starter.

Because the Jets waited so long to release him, Sanchez's job options were fairly limited compared with other quarterbacks who signed earlier in free agency. Nevertheless, the former Jet said he received "a handful of offers." The Eagles, however, were "the best fit" for him.

"I feel like this team, this coach, the kind of offensive firepower they have is just an exciting element to being here in Philadelphia," Sanchez said. "I think coach [Chip] Kelly really is on the cutting edge of the NFL. He's just one of those guys who just has, really, an exciting vision for the future. I think he's on a constant pursuit of a competitive edge, he's an excitable person. I think as an offensive mind, I'm going to do nothing but learn here, working with offensive minds . . . This is an incredible opportunity."

And the feeling appears mutual.

"I've said many times that we will always look to add quality players at the quarterback position," Kelly, who faced Sanchez during his collegiate coaching days at Oregon, said in a statement on the team's website. "We consider it a key position in this game, so having the chance to add Mark to that group was a no-brainer for us . . . We really like what he brings to the table from an experience standpoint. I also had the chance to see Mark play in college and have always had respect for his game and athletic ability."

Sanchez, 27, missed all of last season after suffering a torn labrum in his right shoulder during a preseason game against the Giants. And as a result of his injury -- and his sky-high salary-cap number for 2014 -- the Jets released him.

Sanchez said that his shoulder will be 100 percent by the time organized team activities begin. "Oh yeah, I'll be fine," he said. "I feel good. I'll be ready to go. The physical was great. The doctor was pleasantly surprised."

A source told Newsday on Thursday night that Sanchez had passed his physical and agreed to a deal with the Eagles. Friday, the signing became official, a move that completes a backup quarterback swap between the Jets and Eagles.

Asked about Vick signing with his former team, Sanchez joked: "I think we passed each other on the train. We high-fived, wished each other luck."

The Jets -- who signed Vick to a one-year, $4-million guaranteed deal -- saved $8.3 million by cutting Sanchez. The former Jet was due to earn a $2-million roster bonus Tuesday and also carried a $13.1-million cap charge for the upcoming season.

But despite his roller-coaster five years in Florham Park, Sanchez repeatedly said he's got nothing but love for the Jets.

"Most importantly, I have nothing but good things to say about the New York Jets," said Sanchez, who helped lead the Jets to appearances in the AFC title game in 2009 and 2010. "All I can remember are the great things. Was everything perfect? Absolutely not. It's not going to be perfect here. But I'm just excited about moving forward. I'm excited about everything we've accomplished in the past. [It's] amazing.

"All the pictures I still have, all the game balls and things like that, that stuff never goes away. It's not just turn your back and forget those guys. That was an amazing time, it was an amazing experience for me, my family, my community, everybody back home . . . . It's a different chapter. It's something new, but I'm not going to compare the two."

Jets sign free agent cornerback Jeremy Reeves, a fast, undrafted player (Darryl Slater) Star-Ledger March 28, 2014

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2014/03/jets_sign_free_agent_cornerback_jeremy_reeves_a_fast_undrafted_player.html

The Jets still need a new No. 1 cornerback, but on Friday they signed a free agent corner to add depth: Jeremy Reeves, who played at Iowa State from 2009-12.

He sat out last season after undergoing pectoral surgery. Reeves, who is 5-7 and 170 pounds, participated in Iowa State’s pro day Tuesday. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.29 seconds, had a 43-inch vertical leap and broad jumped 11 feet, 6 inches, according to the Jets’ press release announcing his signing.

Reeves started 26 games in his college career. He had five interceptions and returned two for touchdowns, including one for a 91-yard score. He was not drafted last year.

So while Reeves isn’t going to step in and start at the spot vacated by Antonio Cromartie’s release, he does seem to bring some intriguing speed to the Jets.

Mark Sanchez, now with Eagles, on his time with Jets: 'We had an incredible run' (Darryl Slater) Star-Ledger March 28, 2014

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2014/03/mark_sanchez_now_with_eagles_on_his_time_with_jets_we_had_an_incredible_run.html

There are plenty of reasons for Mark Sanchez to have sour feelings about the Jets.

The franchise certainly rewarded him well financially, and made him its starting quarterback immediately after drafting him fifth overall in 2009.

Even though Sanchez had often-glaring struggles of his own with turnovers, the Jets also failed to surround him with enough offensive weapons. Moreover, they deemed it wise to play him in the fourth

quarter of the third preseason game last year, behind an offensive line of backups. Sanchez sustained an injury to his throwing shoulder that required surgery and sidelined him for the year.

The Jets cut him last week and replaced him with former Eagles starter Michael Vick as the challenger to second-year pro Geno Smith, whom Sanchez was beating in the Jets’ quarterback competition last year at the time of his injury.

The Jets-Eagles backup quarterback swap, as it were, was completed on Friday, when Sanchez signed with the Eagles, who have Nick Foles set as the starter. After signing, Sanchez reflected on his time with the Jets. If he has any animosity about the experience, he did not show it Friday during his press conference.

In fact, as you would expect, Sanchez was all smiles on all fronts – from his admiration of Eagles coach Chip Kelly to his time with the Jets.

After thanking the Eagles’ owner, Jeffrey Lurie, he also thanked members of the Jets by name: owner Woody Johnson, coach Rex Ryan, general manager John Idzik and former general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who drafted Sanchez and, thus, made him Ryan’s first draft pick as a head coach.

“They’ve been so good to me,” Sanchez said of the Jets. “It’s been a different kind of transition. But some great memories there. Love that team. Love that organization. To make the transition, I’m excited to be in a new spot.”

But had he already moved on from any possibility of returning to the Jets well before his official release?

“I was still waiting for a decision,” he said. “I told them that I was excited to be back if that was the plan. If that wasn’t the plan, absolutely, no hard feelings, and that I had an incredible run there, we had an incredible run, more importantly. Some incredible times. Just fun playoff races and comeback victories, overtime wins. That kind of stuff sticks with you forever. A couple of AFC Championship runs.

“Those were some special, special times that I shared with some great teammates. The toughest part about it all is that we didn’t win it all. There was always that competitive drive to get back there, having tasted that kind of success, that we wanted to just finish the job. If that wasn’t the case (that the Jets wanted him back), that’s fine. Just let me know as soon as possible, and then both sides would move on accordingly.”

Sanchez didn’t take the bait when asked if the Eagles’ offensive system will be better than the Jets’ system for developing his skills.

“That’s a well-worded question, but I’ve got to be careful with my answer,” he said. “Most importantly, I have nothing but good things to say about the New York Jets. That’s all I can remember, are the great things. Was everything perfect? Absolutely not. It’s not going to be perfect here. But I’m just excited about moving forward.

“Everything we’ve accomplished in the past is amazing. All the pictures, I still have all the game balls and things like that. That stuff never goes away. It’s not just turn your back and forget those guys. That was an amazing time, an amazing experience for me, my family, my community, everybody back home. I’m just excited about moving forward. It’s a different chapter, something new. But I’m not going to compare the two (franchises).”

Sanchez declined to say if the Jets made him any kind of reduced-pay offer to stay before cutting him – a move that saved the team $8.3 million in salary cap space for this season.

“I had some amazing experiences (with the Jets), had some great times, and learned an awful lot about the media, about different people in the media, about how those relationships work, about how a

business is run – how an NFL business is run, how an organization works,” Sanchez said. “I think every experience can help you moving forward. I think that’s the only thing I’ve done, is learned quite a bit about it. I’m just blessed to be where I’m at, happy, and excited to move forward.”

Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez says Eagles coach Chip Kelly 'is on the cutting edge of the NFL' (Darryl Slater) Star-Ledger March 28, 2014

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2014/03/former_jets_quarterback_mark_sanchez_says_eagles_coach_chip_kelly_is_on_the_cutting_edge_of_the_nfl.html

Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez spent much of his introductory press conference with the Eagles on Friday explaining his rationale forgoing to Philadelphia.

Nick Foles is set as the Eagles’ starter. While Sanchez, who was cut by the Jets, said he still wants a starting job, he might not have a shot at it this year with the Eagles.

So why the Eagles?

Well, there were not a ton of other landing spots available for Sanchez. But Eagles coach Chip Kelly was also a factor in Sanchez’s decision to head to Philadelphia.

The Eagles last season ranked second in the NFL in yards and fourth in points. They went 10-6 and won the NFC East. Kelly, in his first season in the NFL, showed that his offense’s success was not limited to the college ranks, where he excelled for four seasons at Oregon before joining the Eagles.

“I feel like this team, this coach, the kind of offensive firepower they have, is just an exciting element to being here in Philadelphia,” Sanchez said, explaining his decision to sign the Eagles. “I think coach Kelly really is on the cutting edge of the NFL. He’s one of those guys who just has really an exciting vision for the future. I think he is on a constant pursuit of a competitive edge. He’s an excitable person. I think as an offensive mind, I’m going to do nothing but learn here. This is an incredible opportunity.”

Despite Foles being locked in as the starter, Sanchez said the Eagles were "the best fit" for him.

"This is one of the most explosive teams you see around the league," he said. "Just to get a shot to play and try and compete at this level with these guys, that’s going to be fun for me. Hopefully, I add something to this team. With my experience, it can only help."

Sanchez mentioned a few things in particular that he liked about Kelly’s system for operating a team, based on what he saw while visiting the Eagles on Thursday.

“I think the nutrition, the scheduling, everything we talked about in the last 24 hours, with their weight room regimen,” he said. “Everything is not just new, but there’s a purpose. They’re driven by something and that’s the overall success of this team. All the data they collect, everything that goes into this is well calculated, well thought out. It sounds like something I want to be a part of as a competitor, as somebody who’s always trying to improve my skills. I feel like this is one of the best things for me personally and for this team, that we help each other out.”

Sanchez said Kelly told him he wants a quarterback “who can think fast,” which is important in Kelly’s up-tempo offense.

Page 9: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/...with NFL rushing champion LeSean McCoy. The options were part of what made Philadelphia so appealing

9 | P a g e

“He calls it a fast blinker,” Sanchez said. “Somebody who can understand the system, who is familiar with these kind of concepts. It just felt like everything married up very well. That’s part of why I made the decision.”

Sanchez said he has “quite a bit” of familiarity with the concepts of Kelly’s system, though not with the “exact terminology.”

“But a lot of the concepts I’ve seen and executed before,” Sanchez said. “I love the tempo of the offense. I feel like some of our best success where I’ve been was at a high tempo, at a high level – either late in the game, or when we just picked things up and started rolling in a two-minute fashion. It feels like that’s kind of the norm around here. So that’s not just exciting, but that’s fun for me. That’s fun for a quarterback.”

Sanchez said Kelly’s person demeanor impressed him most about the coach.

“He’s just so focused,” Sanchez said. “He’s like a surgical knife, where he is that exact, but he’s so excited, he’s so energetic. That stuff is contagious. It gets you excited to be at a place like this. I think the way that he talked about having the right players for this system. He feels like he’s just about got that here, and the kind of vision moving forward of what it’s supposed to look like kind of came together for them towards the end of the season. So it’s definitely a team on the rise. I think they’ve got the right guy, the right people, personnel, whether it’s on the field or in the coaching box or whatever. From top to bottom, they’re just ready to roll.”

Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's career takes new turn with Eagles (Darryl Slater) Star-Ledger March 28, 2014

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2014/03/former_jets_quarterback_mark_sanchezs_career_takes_new_turn_with_eagles.html

Mark Sanchez’s goal has not changed, though his circumstances have, drastically.

At this time last year, Sanchez was preparing for another season as the Jets’ starting quarterback. Even when they drafted Geno Smith and pitted him against Sanchez in a competition for the job, Sanchez appeared to be winning the battle in late August.

Now, after missing last season with a throwing shoulder injury, Sanchez finds himself with the Eagles, playing for a significantly reduced salary and facing the possibility of spending all of 2014 as a backup to Nick Foles.

But Sanchez’s vision for his role on an NFL team remains undeterred.

“I’m always going to want to start,” he said at a press conference Friday, after he signed a one-year contract with the Eagles. “I’ll keep that fire going and try and help this team the best I can.”

Sanchez said he is “confident no matter who I’m competing against,” but added, “coming in here, I’m not stirring up a controversy. I’m thrilled about the opportunity, but more importantly, I really do respect Foles. I respect what he’s done here.”

Sanchez insisted he did not think too much about the opportunity (or lack thereof) to earn a starting job in Philadelphia. Foles replaced Michael Vick as the starter last season, but Foles is still entering just his third season, and has only 16 career starts. Moreover, Foles has missed time due to injuries in each of his first two seasons.

Sanchez said he had offers from other teams – not necessarily all to sign as a backup – but he declined to specify. He called the Eagles “the best fit,” largely because of coach Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense, which ranked second in the NFL in yards and fourth in points last year, Kelly’s first as an NFL coach.

“I think coach Kelly really is on the cutting edge of the NFL,” Sanchez said. “I think as an offensive mind, I’m going to do nothing but learn here. This is one of the most explosive teams you see around the league. Just to get a shot to play and try and compete at this level with these guys, that’s going to be fun for me.”

The Jets and Eagles basically swapped backup quarterbacks via free agency, as Vick signed with the Jets last Friday, when they cut Sanchez.

But the Jets’ offense still needs help, particularly at wide receiver. To that end, Jets owner Woody Johnson said Sunday at the NFL meetings in Orlando, Fla., that the team was interested in perhaps acquiring receiver DeSean Jackson.

At the time, Jackson was still a member of the Eagles, though they were widely expected to trade or cut him. They cut him Friday. They have long been concerned about Jackson’s poor attitude and work ethic, him missing meetings, and about the potentially negative influences of his friends outside of the team, according to NJ.com.

Now that Jackson is officially a free agent, would the Jets be willing to take a chance on him? It would, unquestionably, be perceived as something of a risk. The Eagles raised a red flag by releasing Jackson in his prime – he is 27 years old – and after the best season of his career (82 catches, 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns).

Even with Jackson gone, Sanchez would have plenty of other skilled targets, such as Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper, if he manages to see significant action with the Eagles.

However this season unfolds for Sanchez, it will be a rebuilding step in his career. He will make $2.25 million, unless he plays 90 percent of the snaps, in which case he will earn $1.75 million more, according to reports. His Jets contract was set to pay him $11.5 million in 2014, though there was no way the Jets were going to keep him at that price.

Sanchez declined to say if the Jets made any offer to bring him back at a reduced price. If he felt any animosity toward the Jets, he did not show it Friday. He thanked the organization and said, of his five seasons with the team, “We had an incredible run.”

It ended dubiously for Sanchez, when the Jets decided to play him in the fourth quarter of last year’s third preseason game, behind an offensive line of backups, and he sustained a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery.

Sanchez said he is progressing well in his rehab, and that the Eagles’ medical staff was “pleasantly surprised” during his physical Thursday. Barring a major setback, Sanchez is on track to being healthy for training camp and beyond. Starters usually sit out the fourth and final preseason game, but in his current situation, Sanchez might play in that contest – a home game for the Eagles, against the Jets.

Jackson cut by Eagles follows ‘gang’ report; Jets still interested (Brian Costello) New York Post March 28, 2014

http://nypost.com/2014/03/28/desean-jackson-released-by-eagles-after-report-of-gang-ties/

It’s your move, Woody Johnson.

The Eagles released star wide receiver DeSean Jackson on Friday, making him a free agent the Jets and their owner may want to grab. Jackson was released shortly after a report revealed the Eagles had concerns about his ties to gang activity in Los Angeles, complicating any decision on the receiver.

The Jets have been discussing Jackson internally for months, believing Philadelphia eventually would trade him. A source said Friday the Jets are still interested in Jackson, but acknowledged conversations needed to occur at the organization’s highest levels before they make a move.

Johnson confirmed the Jets had interest in Jackson this week at the league meetings while Jackson was still a member of the Eagles. It is unclear whether general manager John Idzik wants Jackson. He likely will lean on offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who coached Jackson in Philadelphia, and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, who worked with Jackson at the University of California. New Jets quarterback Michael Vick is close with Jackson as well from their days as Eagles.

“It’s a no-brainer,” one Jets source said of signing Jackson.

The Jets, who had the 31st-ranked passing offense in 2013, have a need at wide receiver, even after signing Eric Decker to a five-year, $36.25 million deal earlier this month. That led to them discussing Jackson in case he became available.

Now, he is.

But the situation got a lot murkier Friday with the NJ.com report that Jackson was contacted by the LAPD about a 2010 gang-related murder. The police said Jackson was never a suspect, but his ties to Theron Shakir, a purported member of the Crips gang, led the police to speak to Jackson. Shakir was later acquitted of the murder.

The report also said another gang-related murder took place in 2012 at a building owned or leased by a member of Jackson’s family and documents belonging to him were found at the scene.

Additionally, police said Jackson had flashed gang signs on the field while playing for the Eagles. Jackson also had a previously unreported arrest in 2009 for marijuana possession, tinted windows and disturbing the peace.

The Eagles issued a brief statement that did not discuss anything gang-related: “After careful consideration over this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today.”

Jackson issued a statement denying any involvement with gangs.

“I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off of the field,” Jackson said in the statement. “I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member, and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible.”

A league source said there have been whispers for years about Jackson and his off-field activity, but it has never been an issue for the Eagles before now. There was a feeling around the league this information only surfaced as an excuse for the Eagles to let him go.

Joe Bommarito, a former Jets scout who scouted Jackson, said there were concerns about Jackson in 2008 when he was in the draft.

“Off the field, there were some issues,” Bommarito said. “I know things are hot right now with him. There were some issues there. During that time Eric Mangini was my head coach. He had his parameters on players he wanted and character was the No. 1 thing on his list. That hurt the guy with us because he did have some character issues. But as a football player, man, he’s what you want.”

Bommarito, who scouted for the Jets until last year, said he thinks Jets coach Rex Ryan could make it work with Jackson.

“I don’t think Rex would have any problem with him,” he said. “I think he would be able to handle him and work with him well.”

Jackson was scheduled to make $10.5 million 2014 and had $30.5 million remaining on his contract. Now, he assuredly will get considerably less.

Jackson excelled in Chip Kelly’s offense in 2013, setting career highs in receptions (82) and yards (1,332). He also scored nine touchdowns.

Mark Sanchez: ‘I’m always going to want to start’ (Brian Costello) New York Post March 28, 2014

http://nypost.com/2014/03/28/mark-sanchez-im-always-going-to-want-to-start/

New Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez said he’s not looking to create any controversy, but he is not happy just being a backup.

“I’m always going to want to start,” Sanchez told reporters in Philadephia at his introductory press conference. “It doesn’t matter where you are, you want to play. There’s nothing wrong with having that drive. I’ll keep that fire going and try to help this team the best I can.”

Sanchez, 27, joined the Eagles officially Friday, one week after the Jets released their former first-round pick. He signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract that can go up to $4 million through incentives, according to a source. Sanchez will be Nick Foles’ backup, and he praised Foles’ ability.

It may seem odd Sanchez would go to the Eagles where it looks like he won’t have a chance to start, but Sanchez sounds like he fell in love with the offense of Eagles coach Chip Kelly.

“I think it’s the best fit,” Sanchez said. “Offensively, it’s the best fit, with the kind of leaders they have on this team.
This is one of the most explosive teams around the league.”

After years of playing for the defensive-minded Jets, Sanchez sounded excited about playing for a head coach whose background is in offense. He said Kelly — who coached at Oregon when Sanchez played in the same conference at USC — is on ”the cutting edge of the NFL.”

“I’ve said many times that we will always look to add quality players at the quarterback position,” Kelly said in a statement released by the team. “We consider it a key position in this game, so having the chance to add Mark to that group was a no-brainer for us.

“Mark has started 68 games in his career and has taken his teams deep into the playoffs multiple times, so we really like what he brings to the table from an experience standpoint. I also had the chance to see Mark play in college and have always had respect for his game and athletic ability.”

Sanchez was asked whether he had spoken with Michael Vick, the former Eagles quarterback the Jets signed last week.

“I think we passed each other on the train, gave each other a high-five [and said] ‘Good luck,’” Sanchez joked.

Sanchez, who spent five seasons with the Jets, did not take any shots at his former team. He opened his news conference by praising members of the Jets, including coach Rex Ryan, former general manager Mike Tannenbaum and current GM John Idzik.

“Most importantly, I have nothing but good things to say about the New York Jets,” Sanchez said. “All I can remember are the great things. Was everything perfect? Absolutely not. It’s not going to be perfect here. But I’m just excited about moving forward. I’m excited about everything we’ve accomplished in the past. (It’s) amazing.”

Aaron Hernandez had just signed a five-year, $40 million contract with a $12.5 million bonus, $50,000 of which he immediately donated to the Myra Kraft Giving Back Fund.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft is one of the brightest, most savvy and influential owners in the NFL, but on that day in late August of 2012, he was tossing bouquets at Hernandez.

“I just think he’s a super player and really a first-class guy,” Kraft said.

Kraft was 1-for-2.

As it turns out, not only is Hernandez sitting in prison after being charged with first-degree murder last June, just 10 months after signing the contract, but he is now also a suspect in the drive-by murder in Boston of two men six weeks before he signed.

Hernandez is changing the way teams do business, which is why the Jets need to immediately ditch any plans they have to sign DeSean Jackson, who was cut by the Eagles on Friday, with stories about an alleged association with gang members swirling around him.

The Eagles had been shopping Jackson because of a reported bad attitude, a bad work ethic and a bad relationship with Chip Kelly. He was due to make $10.5 million this season. Their concern about him reportedly increased this week, and on Friday, NJ.com published a story detailing Jackson’s “continued association with reputed Los Angeles gang members who have been connected to two homicides since 2010.”

After he was released, Jackson issued a statement defending himself and his character. And he denied any gang involvement. “I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang,” Jackson said. “I am not a gang member, and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible.”

Regardless, the Eagles abruptly cut Jackson on Friday, giving up any attempt to trade him. This could be a Super Bowl year in Philly, and Jackson would have certainly continued to thrive in Kelly’s fast break offense, making it apparent that they had had enough of him.

And if the Eagles, who know Jackson better than any team interested in signing him, didn’t want him, why should the Jets?

This was not a salary-cap dump. This was about the culture change the NFL is attempting to institute. It is all part of the Hernandez Effect. Teams must do their homework and then double- and triple-check it. No team wants its brand stained, certainly not after watching the damage Hernandez did to the Patriot image. Of course, Hernandez is an extreme case, but his alleged criminal acts have put teams on high alert about their players’ off-the-field behavior.

Santonio Holmes came to the Jets with some off-the-field baggage. After one season, Holmes got a five-year, $50 million contract from the Jets. Holmes never got into any issues off the field in his three years with Gang Green, but he turned into a toxic force in the locker room.

Jackson is a better player now than Holmes was when the Jets traded for him in 2010. But you can feel the Jets are breathing easier after they cut Holmes a few weeks ago. Why risk starting the cycle over by signing Jackson?

In these times, when teams are being ultra-careful, there is no reason for the Jets to be the team that takes a chance on Jackson. There is still support for him on some level within the Jets organization, but I would have to believe Woody Johnson and John Idzik are running a deep post pattern to get as far away from Jackson as possible.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who held the same job in Philly, was influential in the Jets’ decision to sign Vick. They were together for four years with the Eagles. Vick carried unforgiveable baggage when he arrived in Philly after serving 18 months in prison for dogfighting. But Vick is five years out of prison and far enough removed from his crime to warrant signing him, even if his past behavior remains no less reprehensible.

Idzik has worked hard trying to clear out the circus atmosphere surrounding the Jets. Bringing in one former Eagle is enough.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/fly-eagle-sanchez-introduced-philly-new-backup-qb-article-1.1738100

PHILADELPHIA – Mark Sanchez pointed to his innovative new head coach and a roster filled with “offensive firepower” for reasons why he signed with the Eagles one week after the Jets released him.

Sanchez officially transitioned from face-of-the-franchise player to veteran backup quarterback Friday, signing a 1-year, $2.25 million contract with the reigning NFC East champs. Although Sanchez said that he didn’t harbor any ill will toward the Jets, G.M. John Idzik certainly did him no favors by not letting him hit the market earlier in free agency.

Sanchez said he had a “handful of offers” and “opportunities” with other teams before deciding to join Chip Kelly’s high-powered offense.

The one-year pact with a team loaded with talented skill-position players makes strategic sense for the 27-year-old Sanchez, whose supporting cast with the Jets eroded in the past few years.

“In this sport, in this business, there’s no guarantees,” Sanchez said Friday. “No matter what anybody can tell you or promise you, this whole thing’s a crapshoot. But I’d like to take the best calculated risk I could. And I think this is it.”

Sanchez preferred to author a comeback with the team that traded up to draft him with the No. 5 overall pick in 2009, but the Jets weren’t interested unless they couldn’t sign other veterans higher on their priority list. The team signed Michael Vick last Friday.

“I was still waiting for a decision,” Sanchez said. “I told them that I was excited to be back if that was the plan. If that wasn’t the plan, absolutely no hard feelings.”

Sanchez was injured when Rex Ryan inexplicably put him in during garbage time of the third preseason game last year. The quarterback publicly took the high road again during his introductory press conference with the Eagles.

“I had an incredible run there,” Sanchez said. “We had an incredible run more importantly. We had some incredible times
. That kind of stuff sticks with you forever. Some special times that Rex and I shared.”

“The toughest part about it all was that we didn’t win it all,” Sanchez added. “There was always that competitive drive to get back there, to having tasted that kind of success, that we wanted to just finish the job.”

Sanchez went 37-31 in games he started, including four road playoff wins in his first two seasons.

“I have nothing but good things to say about the New York Jets,” Sanchez said. “That’s all I can remember – the great things. Was everything perfect? Absolutely not. It’s not going to be perfect here, but I’m just excited about moving forward. Everything we’ve accomplished in the past is amazing
That stuff never goes away. That was an amazing time, an amazing experience for me, my family, my community, everybody back home. I’m just excited about moving forward. It’s a different chapter. Something new.”

Sanchez praised Kelly, who opened plenty of eyes around the league in his first year in the league with his up-tempo offense.

“Coach Kelly really is on the cutting edge of the NFL,” Sanchez said. “He’s one of those guys who has a really exciting vision for the future
I’m going to do nothing but learn here.”

“I love the tempo of the offense,” Sanchez added. “I feel like some of our best success where I’ve been was at a high tempo, at a high level – either late in the game, or when we just picked things up and started rolling in a two-minute fashion. It feels like that’s kind of the norm around here. So that’s not just exciting, but that’s fun for me. That’s fun for a quarterback.”

Sanchez is expected to be Nick Foles’ primary backup. Fellow USC alum Matt Barkley and former Jets teammate G.J. Kinne are also on the roster.

“I’m confident no matter who I’m competing against,” Sanchez said. “Coming in here, I’m not stirring up a controversy. I’m here to help this team win
I really do respect Foles. I respect what he’s done here especially last year. I think he’s an incredible player and a heck of a talent.”

He said he learned plenty from his five years in New York/New Jersey.

“No doubt it’s a sensationalized media there,” Sanchez said. “I think of a lot of things get blown out of proportion whether it’s a relationship with a receiver, whether it’s who you’re dating
The most important thing is the stuff that goes on on the field. But I had some amazing experiences. I had some great times and learned an awful lot.”

DeSean Jackson: Assessing risk vs. reward (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York March 28, 2014

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/37163/desean-jackson-assessing-risk-vs-reward

As owner Woody Johnson told the world this past Sunday, the New York Jets have interest in wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who was released Friday by the Philadelphia Eagles. How much interest remains unclear, but they figure to be involved.

A look at some of the key factors that the Jets must weigh:

Positional need: The Jets gave Eric Decker a five-year, $36.25 million contract, but they don't have a legitimate No. 1-type receiver -- a game-breaker. Jackson, coming off an 82-catch, 1,332-yard season, has that kind of talent. The upcoming draft is rich with receiver talent, but Jackson is a proven commodity.

Economics: The Jets have tremendous flexibility. According to ESPN Stats & Information, they're about $30.4 million under the salary cap. Only one other team, the Cleveland Browns, has more cap space. General manager John Idzik, speaking earlier this week at the NFL owners meetings, said he wouldn't be opposed to having two big-money players at wide receiver. He said it would depend on future cap costs, age, etc.

Baggage: This would be a controversial signing. In his years with the Eagles, Jackson was known as a moody player who complained about his contract, missed meetings and chafed coaches with his me-first attitude. Why else would Chip Kelly unload a 27-year-old Pro-Bowl talent? On Friday, Jackson's reputation took another hit, with NJ.com reporting that the Eagles were concerned about his alleged connections to street gangs in Los Angeles. Jackson, in a statement, claimed he has no gang associations.

Philosophy: Clearly, Idzik is building for the long term, avoiding quick-fix solutions -- especially expensive ones. That's one of the reasons they took a pass on Darrelle Revis; they didn't want to get involved in a one-year arrangement. The Jets would come off as hypocrites if they take a short-term flier on Jackson,

Page 17: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/...with NFL rushing champion LeSean McCoy. The options were part of what made Philadelphia so appealing

Daily Clips Cont.

17 | P a g e

whose value has declined to the point where he might have to accept a one-year prove-it contract. The obvious question: Why wouldn't they do the same for Revis, a solid citizen with good football character?

The X factor: Former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is a close friend of Jackson's, so he'd obviously be an asset for the Jets in any type of recruiting battle. But the Vick-Jackson relationship could be a double-edged sword. League insiders suggested that Jackson's loyalty to Vick could backfire in a potentially volatile quarterback competition between Vick and Geno Smith.

The Big X factor: Johnson is smitten with Jackson's playing ability and is not afraid to pull rank, as he did last year when he instructed Idzik to trade Revis. It's not clear whether the gang-related allegations would cause Johnson to change his opinion. The Jets are taking some heat because of Vick's past; they'd be subject to additional criticism if they picked up Jackson. But Johnson made it clear he's in a win-now mode, so he might be willing to take the risk.

Familiarity: The Jets will rely heavily on offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who coached Jackson in Philadelphia. They trust Mornhinweg, who was instrumental in the Vick acquisition. Mornhinweg knows that Jackson can be a diva, but he's also a coach who recognizes the need for a playmaker.

Sanchez would've been 'excited' to return (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York March 28, 2014

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/37153/sanchez-wouldve-been-excited-to-return

Mark Sanchez, introduced Friday as the newest member of the Philadelphia Eagles, took no parting shots at the New York Jets. In fact, he said he wanted to return.

"I told them I was excited to be back if that was the plan," Sanchez told a news conference at the Eagles' facility. "If that wasn't the plan, absolutely no hard feelings. I had an incredible run there. We had an incredible run, more importantly.

"Some incredible times. Fun playoff races, come-from-behind wins, that kind of stuff. ... A couple of AFC Championship runs. Some special, special times. The toughest part of all is we didn't win it all. There was always that competitive drive to get back there. Having tasted that success, we wanted to just finish the job. If that wasn't the case, that's fine, just let me know as soon as possible and both sides would move on accordingly."

Actually, the Jets took their time, waiting until last Friday -- three days before a $2 million roster bonus was triggered -- before releasing him. They waited until they signed Michael Vick. The Jets broached the possibility of re-working his contract, which carried a $13.1 million cap charge, but they never got around to making a specific proposal, a source said.

In the end, Sanchez and Vick traded places.

"I think we passed each other on the train, gave each other a high five [and said], 'Good luck,'" Sanchez joked.

Sanchez signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract, with a chance to earn $4 million if he maxes out his playing-time incentives.

He sidestepped a question on whether the Eagles' offensive staff, led by coach Chip Kelly, would be a better fit than the staff at the Jets.

"I have to be careful with my answer," he said. "I have only good memories of my time with Jets. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. It's not going to be perfect here. I'm just excited about moving forward."

Sanchez said he still has pictures and game balls from his early success with the Jets, adding, "That stuff never goes away. It was an amazing time, an amazing experience for me and my family and my community, everybody back home. I'm not going to compare the two [teams]."

METRO NEW YORK

Source: Jets unlikely to sign DeSean Jackson (Kristian Dyer) Metro New York March 28, 2014

http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/nfl/2014/03/28/source-jets-unlikely-sign-desean-jackson/

Don’t expect the Jets to be players in the sweepstakes for DeSean Jackson.

Jackson, who was released by the Eagles on Friday, has been rumored to be a target of the Jets since trade rumors about him surfaced last week. Owner Woody Johnson admitted at last week’s owners meeting that the team was exploring the possibility of a trade.

But one team source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Metro New York that Jackson “is a long shot to land here.”

While the three-time Pro Bowler would add an instant playmaker to their wide receiver corps, Jackson may not be seen as a good fit with the team.

“He isn’t a ‘John Idzik guy’ – not what fits here right now” the source said, referring to the Jets’ general manager who has been restrained this offseason.

Jackson has character concerns, according to a report by ESPN.com. Another report on Friday by NJ.com claims he has ties with gangs. Jackson denied any claims of gang ties through a statement to ESPN.

Jackson, who had 1,332 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 2013, could give the Jets a new dynamic as a potential target for quarterback Geno Smith or former Eagles teammate Mike Vick, who signed with the Jets as a free agent.

The deal could also affect cap space down the road.

“The team has shown great discipline this offseason, despite having plenty of cap space,” the source said. “This is done with some big contracts due down the road — players such as [Muhammad] Wilkerson and Jeremy Kerley, among others. If he is signed, then DeSean can cut into that flexibility. But more than that, he isn’t a good fit with what the Jets are trying to do right now. It isn’t to say that there are red flags about his character, but the team is proceeding cautiously and has done due diligence. There are no indications that, right now, the Jets will be a major player for his services. If there is interest, it would be an incentive-laden deal.”

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2014/03/mark_sanchez_im_always_going_to_want_to_start.html

Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez signed with the Eagles knowing full-well he would be the backup to Nick Foles.

And he's fine with that, even if he still thinks he's capable of being a starter in the NFL.

"You know what, I really didn’t look at that too much," Sanchez said of the opportunity to compete with Foles during his introductory press conference in South Philly on Friday.

"I’m confident in my skills. I’m going to compete to be the best player I can possibly be, and that’s going to help Nick, that’s going to help me, that’s going to help Matt Barkley, G.J. Kinne, who I’ve had experience with."

One week after the Jets released him, Sanchez signed a one-year deal with the Eagles with escalators that could earn him $4 million. His release had coincided with the Jets' signing of former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

Toward the end of Friday's presser, Sanchez joked that he and Vick had passed one another and high-fived on trains heading in opposite directions between New York and Philly.

Sanchez was the fifth overall pick in 2009. He took the Jets to the AFC title game his first two seasons before throwing a combined 36 interceptions in 2011 and 2012. He then missed all of last season with a shoulder injury sustained in the preseason.

Foles had supplanted Vick early last season after Vick got hurt. He guided the Eagles to the playoffs while running coach Chip Kelly's high-octane offense, and his Total QBR of 69.0 ranked fifth in the league.

Sanchez was asked specifically why he signed with the Eagles.

"I think it’s the best fit," he said. "It’s the best fit. I think the kind of leaders they have on this team and [center Jason] Kelce and [left tackle Jason] Peters on the line. We talked about the offensive firepower. This is one of the most explosive teams you see around the league."

Sanchez also said Kelly was a big reason he signed with the Birds.

"I’m always going to want to start," Sanchez said. "I think Matt Barkley wants to start. I think G.J. Kinne wants to start. [Ex-Jet] Greg McElroy wanted to start. It doesn’t matter where you where you are. All those guys want to play, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having that drive. I’ll keep that fire going and try and help this team the best I can.

"I’m confident no matter who I’m competing against. Coming in here, I’m not stirring up a controversy. I’m here to help this team win, whatever that means. I’m just excited to be on the team. I’m thrilled about the opportunity, but more importantly, I really do respect Foles. I respect what he’s done here. I’m excited to work with him."
