Introduction

New York City is the biggest city in the United States. Over 8 million people live there.

It’s the center of media, art, fashion, technology, education and entertainment.

NYC consists of 4 parts: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and StatenIsland.

There are many famous places: Times Square, Broadway, Wall Street, Chinatown, Central Park, The Statue of Liberty.

History of NYC

A long time ago, the territory of NYC was the home of an Indian tribe called Lenape.

1625 – the Dutch built a small town called New Amsterdam. Their boss bought the island of Manhattan for 60 guilders (about $1000).

1664 – the English conquered the city.

18th Century

NYC was very important under British rule.

During the War of Independence, the city was a British military base.

1776 –The Great Fire of New York.

1778 – NYC was the capital of the USA.

19th Century

Many people from other countries

came to live in NYC.

1857 –Central Park was founded.

Brooklyn Bridge was built in 1883.

20th Century

1904 – the opening of the subway.

First skyscrapers appeared.

1950 - UN Headquarters were built.

NYC became the biggest city in the world.

Times Square is afamous commercial intersection, at the junctionof Broadway and 7th Avenue. There are 39 millions visitors every year.
