Fr. Keith’s Korner Fr. Keith’s Korner Fr. Keith’s Korner Fr. Keith’s Korner Catholic Schools Week will be observed at

our parish with a special Mass on Sunday 31 January at 11:00 AM, and children from various Catholic Schools in Frederick County are invited to serve in many of the ministries at that Mass. Please sign-up to participate after Mass next weekend, or contact the coordinators using the information that is listed in this bulletin. All Catholic School students are also reminded to wear their uniforms to Mass that day. Each year our parish awards a $1000 college scholarship and $500 high school scholarship through the Drexel Essay Contest. The hope is that our young parishioners also learn more about our patron saint through this process. The application and essays are due in the parish office by this Friday, so please make sure you turn in your material on time. We are hoping to organize parishioners into small groups during the season of Lent to facilitate discussion about the concept of "mercy" during this "Year of Mercy" proclaimed by Pope Francis. Please consider signing up this weekend and next for this Lenten exercise at a time that is convenient for you. Peg O’Hara has provided a report concerning our annual Christmas basket project as a bulletin insert this week, and I want to thank everyone for their generosity at a very special time of year to those who are less fortunate. You can see that we made a difference in the lives of many people this year! Thanks again to Peg for the excellent coordination needed for such a large project to be successful. The Frederick School of Religion has been in operation for over thirty years, providing an adult opportunity to continue learning about religion in an ecumenical atmosphere. We are blessed to have such a service available in this area. Held at Beth Shalom synagogue this year, a brochure describing the 2016 class schedule is included as an insert, and registration forms are available at the Information Center.

2016 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is now underway. Many of our parishioners have already received a mailing from Archbishop Lori. He has asked that you seriously consider making a pledge to the 2016 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Your gift will enable archdiocesan support of ministry, education, and service that touch thousands of lives, not only in our archdiocese, but throughout the world.

Our faith community is able to designate recipients for 25% of each dollar contributed up to our goal. This year, our Pastoral Council has discerned that these funds will be shared with the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Saint Michael's Indian School in Arizona, our "sister parish" project in Haiti that has started grow, and our own parish outreach ministry to immigrants. The Archdiocese will also forward 50% of each dollar contributed over our goal to our parish Building Fund! We hope that you will help us reach our goal and continue strengthening our Building Fund this year.

Please answer the Archbishop's request and make a generous pledge. In addition to supporting the ministry of the Archdiocese, your pledge also helps our parish and several missions that were close to the heart of Saint Katharine herself! Thank you for your support!

Our 33 rd Year

TUITION ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE Saint Katharine Drexel parishioners are invited to apply for Catholic School tuition assistance for the upcoming 2016–2017 academic year. Tuition grants for our parishioners are now distributed through the Frederick County Parish Tuition Assistance Fund, which has been established by eight cooperating parishes in southern Frederick County. The monthly offering for Catholic School Education goes directly into this fund to assist qualifying families. To be considered for a grant:

• Your family must be registered, active parishioners (which includes sharing time and talent), and must contribute financially on a regular basis either through envelopes or electronic funds transfer (EFT).

• Your child(ren) must be enrolled in a Frederick County Catholic School (elementary or high school) that has Archdiocesan recognition. Tuition assistance payments are made directly to the schools.

The distribution committee uses the FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment to conduct financial need evaluations. The application process is fair and confidential. There is a processing fee of $28 for this service. If you are interested in applying for a tuition assistance grant for the 2016-2017 Academic year, please use the FACTS online financial aid application:

• Go to online.factsmgt.com to set up your account and begin; or login with your existing credentials if you already have an account;

• Be sure to designate both a school and your parish of registration;

• If you have any questions about the process, please call FACTS at 866-315-9262. Other questions may be directed to our parish business manager, Michael O’Connor, at 301-360-9581, extension 2274, or [email protected]. The deadline for filing applications is 31 March. All applicants will be notified in writing after applications are reviewed by the distribution committee. Assistance awards are expected to be determined by the middle of May.
