JANUARY 15, 2012 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME www. stmaryfc. org YOU WILL SEE Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, baptized people with wa- ter but told his followers that someone was coming who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. To- day’s Gospel reading does not re- cord any conversation between John and Jesus, but emphasizes that as John watches Jesus go by, he announces that this man is in- deed the promised one, the Lamb of God. Andrew and another man set out to follow Jesus, who turns and asks what they are looking for. Their answer is a strange one: they want to know where he lives. Jesus simply replies, “Come, and you will see.” We are told they stay with him for the whole day. The next day, Andrew finds his brother, Simon, and tells him he has met the Messiah—the Anointed One—and takes Simon to meet Jesus. Like John, Jesus looks hard at Simon, taking the measure of the man, and in the light of what he perceives in him changes his name to Cephas—or as we more com- monly know it, Peter (“the rock”). The two encounters seem very ordinary, yet they are life-changing. Jesus is not pro- claiming a message, preaching to a crowd, or performing great miracles. Instead, he is simply walking past John, and when Andrew and his friend introduce themselves, offers them hospitality and companionship. When Jesus meets Peter, he does not ask probing questions about his family and his background or make solemn pronouncements. He just looks at the man, makes an assessment of his character, and accepts him as a friend. The simplicity of Jesus’ manner demon- strates his willingness to receive people “as they are” but also to call forth their potential. He does not offer lengthy ex- planations of who he is, but takes people to his home and lets them see for themselves. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Every year, the week of January 18-25 marks The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The dates mark the traditional

feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul. The struggle of Jesus’ disciples to remain united has been a difficult challenge from the begin-ning. Paul often confronted conflict and division on his journeys. (For an example, read 1 Corinthians 1:1-12.) Peter and Paul

themselves nearly came to blows over the issue of whether Jesus’ followers needed to keep the Mosaic Law and its dietary practices. It is a sad statement of history that human sin and weakness have splin-tered the one Church established by Christ. Yet, one of the last prayers that Jesus prayed to his Father concerned his followers: “I pray that they may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” (John 17:21)

By Jesus' own words, the division among his followers makes him less believable to the world. Think of how powerful a sign we would be if we were living as one Church of 2.2 billion members! Instead, the followers of Jesus of Nazareth are today splintered into some 85 major denominations and tens of thousands of smaller ones. (Roman Catho-lics, at over 1.1 billion members, are the largest denomination.) We should be ashamed and fervently praying for the unity of Christians – and working towards that unity.

To do so, we must combat the pull of two extremes. One extreme which has often tainted the attitude of the Church holds that we Catho-lics have a lock on the truth and that we can ignore and treat with dis-dain our Christian sisters and brothers in other denominations. Thank-fully, we have come to recognize that God demands more charity, understanding, and a conversion of heart from everyone. The other extreme contends that all denominations are basically equal, that the differences are inconsequential, and that it makes no difference as to which denomination a person belongs. While it is true that it is better to believe in Christ than not to accept him at all, there is more to the story.

To trivialize the theological and other differences between the various Christian denominations is to show disrespect for one's own beliefs and those of the other party. There are very real and significant dif-ferences in beliefs and practices that distinguish Catholics from other Christian denominations. What Catholics believe is not the same as what Baptists believe or Lutherans or The Chapel or… There are cer-tainly some key beliefs we hold in common with other Christians, but there are also major differences. Those differences involve who God is, how he interacts with humankind, and how to understand and apply God's revelation. These are not minor matters of style, but issues of fundamental truth. Unity can only be achieved through prayerful, loving dialogue and an openness to the Spirit, not by wishing away the fun-damental differences between us.

In trying to avoid past animosities, too many among us are losing an understanding of what is unique and special about being Catholic. We are, after all, not only the largest branch of Christianity but also one of the two branches that go back in a direct line to the Apostles. (The other branch being the Orthodox Church, with whom we share 99% of the same beliefs. Pope John Paul II wrote in his 1995 encyclical “Ut Unum Sint” (“That They May Be One”) of our longing for the day when East and West can again be united so that the Church can “breathe with her two lungs.”) We need to pray for a renewed understanding of our own faith and for the patience, wisdom and understanding to pur-sue the unity of all believers, so that we may be one as the Father and Son are one. We also need to abandon our apathy regarding Christian unity. And actively pray and work together with our sisters and broth-ers in acts of charity as an early step towards ending the divisions.

Excellent information on Christian Unity Week can be found on the Archdiocese of Chicago web site (www.archchicago.org ) under the department for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. Please make Christian unity a priority in your prayer and in your living of the Gospel, not only this week but every week. It is surely the work that God wants us to do. May we be guided by the words of St. Augustine: “In neces-sary things, unity; in doubtful things, liberty; in all things, charity.” If you wish to contact me, just leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

SAINT MARY’S GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP FOR ADULTS

January , 28, February 4, 18 and March 3, 17 and 31

It is our goal to be companions and guides for the

bereaved, from the time of their loved one’s death, until the time that they are no longer in need of our assistance. True support does not mean that we are there to cheer the person up. Rather, we are there to be present to the bereaved. True effective support is not dependent upon how much we say, but rather on our presence and how effec-tively we listen. Our small groups will allow the bereaved to meet with fellow parishioners and Archdiocesan trained grief facilitators to help them through their grieving journey. Our next grief support group for adults will gather in the Hospitality Suite on Saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00 (Noon), beginning on January 14. It is open to adult men and women who have suffered the loss of a friend or relative through death. The program will be run by archdiocesan trained facilitators who can help you in your own journey of life without your loved one. Please call to register or just contact us to see what this ministry offers. For more information, contact Betty Steiner @ 847-837-9833 or [email protected]. You will receive a call before each meeting date.

Pray for the Sanctity of Life Below is an excerpt from Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. sent out to the Archdiocese of Chicago on the Feast of the Holy Innocents, De-cember 28th, 2011.

“’A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she could not be consoled, since they were no more,’ Matthew 2:18. On the Feast of the Holy Innocents, the Church in her wisdom gives us time during the joyful Christmas sea-son to reflect on the sadness of the young martyrs who died in the place of Christ. With Christ’s coming, new value is placed on human life – made in the image and likeness of God. Thus, on January 22,

the Church remembers the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, the U.S. Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion on demand throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Since those tragic decisions were handed down in 1973, more than 55 million children have been aborted in our nation. In 2010 alone, over 25,238 abortions

were performed on women and their children in Cook and Lake Coun-

ties. Therefore, I ask you – and all Catholics across the Archdio-cese of Chicago – to place special focus on the sanctity of life and the

Roe anniversary on the weekend of January 21-22, 2012. I ask that intercessory prayers, bulletin information, and homilies at all Masses that weekend focus on abortion and post-abortion healing.”

Annual Catholic Appeal: Archdiocese to Match

Help Reduce Construction Debt Many parishioners will soon receive a letter from the Archdiocese about the Annual Catholic Appeal, which takes place in February. As we mentioned back in November, this year the Archdiocese is includ-ing St. Mary in a special debt reduction program connected with the Appeal. Through this program, all of our parish’s contributions to the 2012 Appeal will be applied to our $5.3 million of construction debt – and those contributions will be matched by the Archdiocese! This special opportunity will allow us to make significant progress towards retiring our loans. We ask you to be as generous as you can in order to maximize the tremendous gift we are offered through this opportu-nity. We will share more details with you in the weeks ahead. We hope you will recognize the value of the Annual Appeal and do your best to make this year’s Appeal a notable success for St. Mary.

The history of the Catholic Church is filled with fascinating stories of martyrs, the struggles and accomplishments of religious orders, and tensions between popes, emperors and kings. There are numerous examples of great cour-age, strength, dedication, as well as examples of nar-row self–interest, weakness and corruption. Throughout its two thousand years, the Catholic Church has faced moments when it seemed that the faith of Jesus Christ and his Church might disappear. But through the promise of Christ himself, “I will be with you always,” and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Church has persevered and has withstood the threats from em-perors, dictators, heresy and the incompetence of poor popes. In this two lecture series, Fr. Martin Zielinski, Associate Professor of Church History at Mundelein Seminary, will discuss four key themes that run throughout these two millennia:

• Development of Catholic Identity and Belief • Religious and Spiritual Renewal • Church/State Relations • Teaching Authority of the Papacy

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY TRAINING When a member of the Body of Christ dies, we are called to a ministry of consolation. The Church calls us to care for the dying, to pray for the dead, and to comfort those who mourn. As a people of faith, we believe that God created each person for eternal life and that as Christ was raised from the dead we too will be raised to glory. The purpose of the ministry is to become knowledgeable about the “Order of Christian Funerals”, comfort families in their loss, help them plan a funeral liturgy that is respectful and comforting and to offer support as needed. It is for volunteers who wish to join Bereavement Ministry programs already established in their parishes and for those who wish to structure a new Bereavement Ministry in their parish. HOSPITALITY WORKSHOP “How do I greet thee? Let me count the ways!”

Church is a place where families and individuals can not only find support and understanding but feel at home and wanted in their parish family. How do we greet people when supplying information on our parish minis-tries, mass times, sacrament appointments, etc.? Fr. Horrigan will facili-tate a lively discussion on how we can radiate a welcoming presence to those we encounter through our association with our parishes.

It will include information on responding to emergency situations, meeting and greeting parishioners, answering questions of newcomers and visi-tors, telephone decorum, helping the handicapped and more.

This workshop is for all hospitality ministers, greeters, ushers, first re-sponders, registration desk volunteers, maintenance workers and any other parish volunteers or staff who regularly come in contact with parish-ioners and newcomers in person or by telephone. Proclaiming the Word LECTOR TRAINING

Lectors have a critical role in the celebration of the Mass. Because lec-tors proclaim not just any word, but the word of God, it is essential that they develop the skills required to communicate God’s message compe-tently. Through the use of voice, eye contact and personal presence lec-tors help God’s Word come alive for the assembly. This training will provide the skills and self-confidence needed for those who wish to become lectors in their own parish or for those lectors who would like a “refresher course”.
