Wrawby Horticultural Society 73rd Annual Show - “Wrawby Show”

If you forgot to plant any seeds this spring then you’ve missed your chance to win a prize in the Vegetable classes at this year’s Wrawby Show on Saturday 8th August. However there’s still time to search the garden for something to enter in the Open Flowers section or don your apron to produce some jam, a sponge cake or one of the other items included in the Open Cookery classes. There are 8 Sections in this year’s Show. In addition to the three mentioned above you might be tempted by the Special Village Novice Class, Floral Art, Open Handicrafts or Photography. Section 8 covers the Children’s Classes which include handicraft, cookery and photography. This year the subjects for the adult photography classes are Sunsets and Unusual Aspects of Wrawby. In the children’s section the subject is Pets. The impressive prize silverware shown above includes a cup or shield for the most successful exhibitor in each class as well as cups for Best Exhibit in the Show and Most Points in the Show. Even if you don’t enter you can still view the exhibits, enjoy afternoon tea, buy some fresh local produce in the auction, and enjoy the special atmosphere at this traditional village event.. Programme and entry forms are available from Committee members and at www.wrawby.org.uk

    The reality of Gardening?

"Annuals" mean disappointment once a year. Your lawn is always slightly bigger than your desire to mow it. Whichever garden tool you want is always at the back of the shed. The only way to ensure rain, is to give the garden a good watering. Weeds grow at precisely the rate you pull them out. Nothing ever looks like it does on the seed packet. Autumn follows summer, winter follows autumn, drought follows planting. The only way to guarantee colour all year round is to buy a garden gnome. However bare the lawn, grass will appear in the cracks between the paving stones. Evergreens go a funny shade of brown in the winter.

God made rainy days, so gardeners could get the housework done.

Gardening requires lots of water - mostly in the form of perspiration.

The Pre-School will have been in the new building for nearly 6 months when you read this. Time flies. The Editors have been following some of their activities on Facebook and here are some of the highlights from July.

R&E Aggregates Ltd very kindly donated and delivered a tonne of topsoil to fill the new planters the day before International Mud Day. Perfect timing! The children had a wonderful time exploring the soil with their hands and bare feet, before digging, climbing, filling and wheeling the wheelbarrows, lifting the wheelbarrows into the planters and emptying the soil. The children were extremely proud to have completed the task themselves. Once the planters were filled with soil they enjoyed planting the sensory plants and herbs kindly donated by Brigg Garden Centre. Thanks to both businesses for their support. The visit of village beekeepers, Mr. and Mrs. Neave, enabled us to extend the children's knowledge and understanding of the world. They learnt about another person's occupation, found out how honey is made and learnt about the life cycle of a bee. Mr Neave very kindly made a new hive to demonstrate the process to the children. They thoroughly enjoyed handling the objects he brought. He wore his protective clothing, explaining it's purpose and brought a child's size version for the children to try on. All of the children enjoyed tasting and describing his honey. On another day a grandparent visited preschool and baked honey buns with the children using Mr. Neave's honey! The visit was also used to inspire the children in the workshop area with creations linked to bees. They used cardboard tubes to print the cells of their own hive. They then drew, cut out and glued bees onto their hives. Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Neave for the wonderful experience they gave the children.

Parish Council Meeting 7th July 2015. Nth Lincs Council Neighbourhood Services Dept has been re-organised in the hope that necessary action can be more accurately targeted. If any resident identifies a need for assistance (grass cutting of verges, overhanging trees, hedges, potholes etc.) please either report it to a Parish Councillor (list on Notice Board in village) or to the Parish Clerk (01652 651250), e-mail [email protected])

Bookings at the Village Hall have declined recently and residents are reminded that this is an excellent facility at which to hold your parties, functions etc. The person to contact is Mrs Susan Day on 01652 653699 Graham Foster, Parish Clerk

    SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD and POLICE MATTERS

59 crimes were recorded in the Brigg and Wolds Ward in June 2015, of which 37 were in Brigg town. Across the Ward, there were 20 incidences of theft, and 20 of burglary (7 in dwellings). There were 8 incidents of assault, harassment or threats of violence, 8 involving criminal damage and 3 other offences. Although the incidence of burglaries from dwellings remains low in North Lincolnshire, Tracy Coyne, the Safer Neighbourhood Officer is asking that everyone continues to look out for Neighbours and vulnerable members of the community and report any suspicious activity day or night with as much information as possible on the 101 number. Julie Smith will be bringing some Security Locks to Wrawby Show for any villagers who would like them. Recorded Crimes in Wrawby during June - 1 x Assault causing actual bodily harm - Police were called to two broken down vehicles on the motorway, and when small boys were seen climbing onto a container near the Village Hall. A possible drink driver was also reported on Barton Road. There has been a white van travelling around North Lincolnshire with the driver knocking on doors asking to clear rubbish and unwanted items, including mattresses and other bulky objects. There is a charge and unfortunately the rubbish is then fly tipped. If you are approached or know anyone that has been, please could you contact Tracy Coyne with any details including time, date and registration of the van (if it is safe to get it). Tel: 01724 244634 or 07557566214 or 101

For most of us August is a time of holidays, especially if we have children. But what do we mean by holiday? My dictionary defines a holiday as "an extended period of recreation, especially away from home or in travelling; a break from work." I certainly agree with that, indeed so do most experts as they say there has to be a good work/relaxation balance in our lives for our well being, all work and no play is no good for our mental and physical health. A holiday is a chance to get away from our normal routine; to do something different, to go somewhere new, to try something fresh. It may also be a chance just to relax, chill out and do nothing at all. All of us will have different ideas of what makes a great holiday, but the really important thing is that we take a break from our daily chores and allow our bodies and minds to be refreshed and recharged. Holiday comes from Holy Day and goes back to medieval times when the only days off were days when saints were commemorated and normal day to day life was suspended in order to celebrate the feast day (feast being the operative word!). However it could also be traced back to God's instructions to the ancient Israelites in the Old Testament, where God commanded them to keep certain days and weeks holy, when they were to do no normal work but fast or feast (depending on the celebration). Jesus, too , was concerned that his disciples learnt how to take rest from time to time. As Jesus became well known for his teaching and healing, crowds would flock to hear and see him, demanding his constant attention. As many of us know such demands quickly lead to stress, tiredness, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. It was important that Jesus took his disciples away somewhere quiet when things started to become too much. The Gospels frequently tell us of Jesus seeking quiet away from the crowds in order to teach his disciples and indeed to find peace himself. It may not always be possible to go away on holiday, it was not always possible for Jesus to get away from the crowds, but what is important for our state of mind is that we find that little bit of space to allow our bodies and minds to relax and chill out. If you are on holiday enjoy it, if not I hope you can find chance for a bit of a break. Nigel
