Welcome
There’s rarely a slow week at the New Wolsey Theatre with a year round programme of work that stretches from contemporary theatre to pantomime with pretty much everything in between, and the annual Open Season is no exception. There’s a range of musicals to rival the West End, new comedy and drama (including some plays that haven’t even been written yet), the chance to celebrate the creativity of children and young people from across Suffolk, work with professional performance makers for and with the community and much more. You’ll see a short series of ‘Moving Stories’ performances, films and events made by DanceEast, Gecko, Pacitti Company and Unscene Suffolk that examine notions of belonging as a Deaf or disabled person within the wider community. These four companies use their trademark styles and forms to ensure the voices, stories and talents of those often ignored or marginalised, are placed centre stage. So come and find us at the New Wolsey Theatre, New Wolsey Studio, St Peters Church, Christchurch Mansion and the High Street Exhibition Gallery to see the terrific range of performances and events on offer for 2015!Rob SalmonASSOCiATe DiReCTOR NeW WOlSey THeATRe

This tragi-comedy follows irene and her two daughters as they begin a long
journey in which the girls lose their mum in spirit but not in body.
As the family struggle to come to terms with her Alzheimers, irene’s past
passion for romantic fiction blurs with reality as she discusses how to write her memory book with her imaginary friend Barbara cartland, disclosing
long-lost family secrets. Playwright Gail Young follows up her
internationally acclaimed hit play Cheshire Cats with this touching look at what some experts call ‘the long
goodbye’.

madcap delight.

Music by Marc ShaimanLyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman
in 1960s Baltimore, dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad auditions for a spot on “The corny collins show” and wins.
she becomes an overnight celebrity, a trendsetter in dance, fun and fashion.
Perhaps her new status as a teen sensation is enough to topple corny’s reigning dance queen and bring racial integration to the show. Hairspray is a feel-good factor musical with strong
messages about tolerance of difference.

An irishman, an englishman and an American - edward, Michael
and Adam - have been kidnapped and are being held hostage in
lebanon. Thrown together in a single cell, struggling to survive and hang on to their sanity, they discover their greatest weapon against their
captors is humour. in an effort to alleviate their boredom,
the cell mates share their failings, their ambitions and their paranoia.
The banter flows as they tell stories, laugh at and with each
other, write imaginary letters home, drink imaginary martinis, shoot
imaginary films, play a fantastical game of tennis and throw a big party
for each other.
