When the flurry of applications to perform in the Open Season flood in we never cease to be impressed by the energy and ambition of the work.

It’s exactly what the Open Season is for - the chance that performers from around the region have to explore our stages and share their work.

This annual showcase has brought many surprises and much excitement to the New Wolsey Theatre and Studio over recent years and 2013 is no exception. With the range of musicals, plays, work from young people, original work and new ideas this year looks like something really special.

Terrific too to welcome professional companies, Playing ON and Slung Low, as they showcase work they are making with the youth and community groups.

Into the WoodsMUSIC AND LYRICS BY Stephen Sondheim

BOOK BY James Lapine

A fairy tale with a difference that will appeal to all!

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s iconic multi award winning musical Into the Woods combines the well-known fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood with the story of a Baker and his Wife who desperately want a child.

But this is more than a fairy tale: it is a musical about quests, the pursuit of happiness, the fulfilment of dreams, the lifting of spells and the reversal of curses. The Woods may just be trees, but they also represent a place of aspiration, the place of challenges and consequences, where all of the characters must face their own limitations.

Built from the legacy and vision of a great Ipswich surgeon, The Bartlet Convalescent Home was the much loved heart of community convalescent care for the East Suffolk Area from 1926 until 2008 when it was closed and the building put up for sale.

This play traces the history of The Bartlet and the man behind the vision, through the eyes of those who were part of its life from the early days of Arthur Griffiths to the patients and their relatives, the medical practitioners and those who desperately fought to save it from closure.
