“No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new form the old, and the tear gets worse. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.” (Mark 2: 21-22)
It seems to me that Jesus was eminently practical; he used everyday examples in order to make a point clearly. This way of teaching made sense and most folks would nod with understanding. Parishes are practical places and, for the most part, have been the place that Catholics come to get what the parish community offers. Mass, Confessions, faith formation clas-ses, weddings, funerals, outreach programs, spiritual support, social gatherings and the
like: these are all what make up an active parish. Many would think that the more the activities, the better the parish. And now? Well, in this new reality of COVID time, our reality is very different. And I, along with our limited parish staff, are struggling to come to terms with the fact that we can’t do things as we have done in the past, and we must be open to new ways of ministering to the people of St. Timothy Par-ish whom we serve. This new reality is especially challenging our ways of doing Faith Formation for every age group. Our newly established “Evangelization and Faith Formation Team” is realizing that we cannot do most of what we have done in the past, and the manner in which we have done it, in our present time. Right now, we are finalizing our ‘guiding principles’ that will serve as the foundation for what we will propose to offer. We are constantly being challenged by our desire to go back to what is familiar and not to push forward with new ideas. I ask your prayers for us and for any insights you might have to offer to us. You can forward them to me at [email protected] . Be assured that I will keep you informed as to our progress; we know the Holy Spirit is alive and well and is guiding our efforts to find the new wine and the new wineskins.
Greetings Dear Community of Saint Timothy! I wish that God’s presence, which is radiating all kinds of blessings as hope, joy and grace, being perceived for you. I’m Roberto Carlos Navarro Gutierrez your intern seminarian. I was born in Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico. I have my parents and two sisters living in Mexico. I started my formation in Mexico when I was 17 years old. I finished my religious studies (5 years of Philosophy and 4 years of Theology) in the
Conciliar seminary of the Primate Archdiocese of Mexico. After that I studied other civil degrees at the Marist University in Mexico City. I worked as a professor at the Lumen Gentium University and Verbum Dei Institute of Mexicali and as a consultant for various consulting firms in Mexico. I’m excited to be with you during this time, sharing our faith and looking forward to making the world more similar to the Kingdom of Heaven. You are in my prayers. I hope to be in your prayers as well. May God bless you with peace.

A R e f l e c t i o n o n B e r e a v e m e n t For many families, the pandemic has had one positive effect. It has caused everyone, spouses, parents, grandparents and children (even teen-agers) to realize how precious their relations are to one another and how much they rely on each other for love and support. They are challenged to protect the lives of loved ones at all costs. And it is the loss of a loved one that causes the greatest pain. It is good to remember that Christ himself in his humanity also suffered every sort of pain that human beings must endure, including the death of a loved one. In the middle of chapter 14 of Matthew’s Gospel, a chapter which de-scribes a number of miracles, teaching parables, confrontations with scribes and Pharisees and the death of John the Baptist, there is this sen-tence: “ When Jesus heard of it [ the death of John], he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself.” He left his disciples and a vast crowd of followers to a place where he could mourn the loss of his friend in solitude. Like the time when he wept over the death of his friend Lazarus, Jesus experienced the pain of bereave-ment. Perhaps his most poignant experience of loss, however, is the one described at the conclusion of Matthew 23: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your chil-dren together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate.” Jerusalem and its temple were destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. Would Jesus weep today over our beloved country, so beset by divisive politics, polarization, racism and distrust? Are we not suffering bereavement over the apparent loss of the ideals of liberty, equality and justice for all ? It need not be. We must not despair, but we have work to do. Jesus, who shares our pain, will never abandon us to suffer alone.
