She never expected her proposal would come in lights, on a theatre marquee. But that’s exactly what happened Sunday morning when Noel, 33, popped the question on the marquee of the Columbia Theatre. It was a plan he’d set in motion months ago. The couple, who live with their two children in Victoria Hill, often go for walks along Columbia Street to the waterfront. They’d been to a number of shows at the Columbia, loved the old venue. Once they even took a tour to scout it out as a possible wedding venue, but it was too large and too pricey for their needs. But that tour, said Noel, planted a seed. “I’d been thinking of a unique way to ask her,”said Noel. “Something that means a lot to both of us.” He sent an email to the theatre managers, enquiring about the possibility of posting his proposal on the marquee. They were on board. Then it was just a case of waiting for the weather and circumstances to be just right for Noel and Johnstone to go on their usual Sunday stroll. Saturday, when Noel and his son attended the retro-gaming expo at the Columbia, he dropped by the office to give them the green light to post the sign, which they did later that night. “Luckily, with two kids, we don’t go out much anymore,” said Noel. The next morning, he was awake at 6 a.m. “I was pretty nervous,” Noel said. “My heart started thumping.” He tried not to let on that something was up. And the public outcry over council’s decision to cancel the Lancer dance shows it miscalculated community support for the longstanding tradition. “The city has tried to make the issue go away,” said MacGrotty. “But it’s turned into a common cause, a rallying point for many New Westminster residents.” On Monday council formed a committee comprised of three councillors, Patrick Johnstone, Jaimie McEvoy and Lorrie Williams, who will meet with the Lancers and May Day organizers to “explore a common vision” for the group after council decided to shut them out of their traditional dance with the May Queen suite at the city’s May Day banquet. That decision didn’t sit well with the Lancers and their supporters, who bent the ear of council for more than an hour of delegations at a recent meeting. “I think it’s pretty clear there wasn’t enough dialogue,” said Coun. There’s only one Casablanca. But changing times, tastes

and technology mean the scriptfor the beloved 1942 HumphreyBogart film is just as likely to endup in the shredder as the classicsvault at Warner Bros. Studios.Navigating those changes is

part of the screenwriter’s craft, says NewWestminster authorDon Hauka. In his more than 20 years

working in newspapernewsrooms, some of the storieshe heard from colleaguesand covered himself were sotantalizing, he thought they’dmake good fiction fodder. So heturned his keyboard to crimenovels. His first,Mr. Jinnah:Securities was adapted into a TVmovie broadcast on CBC.He’s since worked on other

screenplays, including adocumentary about the littleknown war between First Nationsand gold seeking miners in theFraser Valley in 1858.Hauka says his journalism

background prepared him well forscreenwriting.“They’re very similar in many

ways,” he says. “You have towrite tight and convey lots ofinformation in a minimal numberof words.”It also gave him a thick skin,

perhaps the most important toolin the screenwriter’s survival kit.“You have to be prepared to

compromise,” says Hauka. “Youhave to choose the hill you’regoing to die on.”That’s because writing for TV

and film is a collaborative processthat can involve a producer, adirector, a cinematographer and

even the actors. Each of thembring their own skills, talents andideas to the table. There’s a lot of give and take,

says Hauka. Sometimes there arewars. It can be a slow, arduous

process rife with rejection. Haukasays he’s been working on thescreenplay for a TV series for sixyears, making pitches, rewriting, then starting all over again.“You have to be prepared for

the long haul,” says Hauka. “Youhave to have the desire to tell astory.”Often, that story starts as a

single sentence.“If you can’t state the story in

a single sentence then you won’t

be able to write a screenplay,” saysHauka. The sentence is then fleshed

out to single-page treatment withmore detail.Hauka compares the process

to squeezing a novel into anhourglass with a big idea at thetop that is then pushed down intoa narrow opening to create littlecomponents before opening upagain to a grand final act.Computer software and writing

guides have made the technicalcomponents of screenwriting, likeformatting and structure, moreaccessible. But actually getting ascreenplay produced still comesdown to an alchemy of hard workand good fortune.

“Writing is only the first step,”says Hauka. “You have to havethat harmonic convergence offinding that right fit for the rightproduction. You have to havedetermination and you’ll find theright people who will help you tellyour story.”

Hauka will be giving ascreenwriting workshop, How towrite your own Casablanca, onSaturday at Douglas College atpart of the 5th annual LitFest NewWest that begins on Friday. Formore information about LitFest, including a full schedule ofprograms and events, go to www.artscouncilnewwest.org/litfest.

Thursday, April 23, 2015 NewsLeader A3

maRio BaRtel/neWsleadeRThere are a million stories in the naked city, a million ways to tell them and scores of outlets through which those storiescan be told. Don Hauka, a former journalist turned author and screenwriter, will be leading a seminar on screenplaywriting at this weekend’s LitFest in New Westminster.

Youmust remember this:Screenwriting is hard work

Separate dog poop binsto stay in Metro parksJeff [email protected]

Metro Vancouver will keep paying aNewWestminster business to cut openbags of doggie doo that are depositedin bins in Metro regional parks so theexcrement can be treated as sewage insteadof going in the garbage to be landfilled orincinerated. It started as a pilot project more than

three years ago but officials now say itwill continue on a permanent basis, eitheras a specific contracted service or as partof a broader future contract for haulinggarbage and recyclables.Metro paid NewWestminster-based

Scooby’s Dog Waste Removal Service$60,000 last year to retrieve 97,000kilograms from regional parks, cut openevery bag, and dump the waste in with thesewage at the Iona sewage treatment plant. The dog waste that piles up is a “very

big” environmental issue for regionalparks, says Metro parks operationsmanager Gudrun Jensen. It harms vegetation and exposes

people and other animals to bacteria andparasites, she said.Nor does the region want it going in

trash bins.“It’s not strictly kosher to put into

the solid waste stream because it is abiohazardous material.”

Metro is amending its violationenforcement bylaw to require dogwalkers to dispose of bagged feces in thedesignated dog waste receptacles whereavailable instead of in the garbage orelsewhere. Violators will face a $125 fine.Metro has estimated the 2.5 million dogs

that visit its regional parks generate 500tonnes of dog waste a year, so the recoveryrate so far may be less than 20 per cent.Jensen acknowledged much of it still

ends up in the garbage.“I wish more people would just flush it

down the toilet,” Jensen added. “It wouldmake life much simpler.”Scooby’s owner Bill Droeske argues cities

should also provide separate bins becausethe disposal of dog excrement is bannedfrom the landfill.“That poop is going into the landfill,” he

said. “Even though it’s against the law, thecities do it.”Droeske has one staff worker who cuts

open dog waste bags and puts them in atanker truck that goes to the treatmentplant.Cities also turn a blind eye to other

sources of excrement in the garbage, hesaid.“There’s probably a lot more baby poop

going in the landfills in diapers, taking upa lot more space, but nobody seems to careabout that.”

Its proprietor, George Mead, fashioned a barber pole from a tree branchto let prospectors and pioneers heading upthe Fraser River know that he was open forbusiness. At one of the city’s newest hair salons,

B-Bombshell, stylists and clients chat easilyabout Star Trek and the next instalmentof the Star Warsmovie series while gettingtheir hair coloured shades of purple andturquoise. It’s the story of those shops, and the

hundreds of others that have groomed theheads of city’s residents over the years, thatis told in the NewWestminster Museum’snew exhibition, Hair Apparent: A HairyHistory of NewWestminster. The exhibit opens Thursday at the Anvil

Centre as part of its VIBE event that willinclude pop-up barbers offering everythingfrom straight razor shaves to hair weaving,as well as bluegrass music and interactivephoto art.Oana Capota, the museum’s curator,

said the exhibit is a unique way to tell thehistory of NewWest. That’s because the people who cut hair

are, by nature, community minded.“They’re so involved in making the city

better,” said Capota. And they’ve been a part of the city’s

history from its very beginning.Capota said many of NewWestminster’s

earliest barber shops also offered baths, alast indulgence before prospectors headedinto the bush and a way for them to cleanup on their return to city life.Capota mined the city’s archives and

searched genealogy records to trace someof the city’s barbers and stylists. But itwasn’t easy.Since barber shops and hairdressers

are such a common part of the urbanlandscape, their presence is often takenfor granted so they haven’t been welldocumented.“It’s real grassroots history,” said

Capota, who also interviewed a number ofNewWest’s current hair cutters to includetheir stories and memories in the exhibit. One of those was Paul Sanders, whose

father-in-law John Van Leese started TheHub barbershop in Uptown in 1955.He joined the family trade because, he

said, “it’s a great job where you meet nicepeople and you’ll never be broke.”Sanders, who donated his own collection

of old barbering implements such asrazors, clippers and sharpening straps tothe exhibit, said it’s the people he meetsevery day that has kept him behind thechair and through moves to five locationsaround Uptown over the years.“It’s a very personal business,” he

said. “People confide in you. They’re not

customers, they’re customer-friends.”They also span generations.Sanders said he’s cut the hair of sons of

sons of sons.“I’ve helped raise a lot of kids,” he joked.

“Sometimes they listen to the barber betterthan their parents.”Capota said that personal connection

is a common thread through the city’sbarbering history.“Everybody loves their job,” she said.

“They love to talk. They care about thepeople they work with.”The results of their craft are on display

for everyone to see. And judge.“Hair is so public,” said Capota. “It

crosses all incomes. People make their firstimpressions visually, so they take their hairseriously.”

Hair Apparent runs at the NewWestminster Museum in the Anvil Centreuntil June 21.

comment: Urban Academy an assetI am a local business owner and resident

of NewWestminster and would like tooffer a perspective on the Urban Academyproject. I am puzzled by the negativecomments and questions about the project. As a business owner, enhancing oureducational offerings and the diversity ofprogramming is good for the vibrancy ofany city. A school brings more new youngfamilies to our community-something nocommunity can afford to dismiss in a timewhen so many households do not havechildren in them at all. I know that thegreater choice and flexibility we can offerour community when it comes to services, the greater the chance we will keep thesefamilies and their business here in NewWestminster. This school does not seemto be asking anything but the chance todevelop some new classrooms for studentsof the future. I hope our City can see theirway clear to encouraging this kind ofcommitment and future investment in ourcommunity. Dismissing it would be veryshort-sighted indeed.

Bravo to students

Living in NewWestminster I havetaken serious interest in the movementof thermal coal through our area and amadamantly against it.I read with great interest the articulate

column written by Sadie DeCoste. In aday and age when our young people arenot given a lot of credit, I would like tocommend her and the group that took thetime and great effort for their petition inopposition of the expansion of the Fraserand Surrey coal port.It is because of the youth of today and

the future that this project worries me. Wedo not know the long-term effect it willhave on this generation. We have lived toolong locking the barn after the horse isdead. Our youth need to be heard. They have

much to give to our community, theyare the future leaders. I hope they willcontinue to work hard for what theybelieve in!

that’s politicsMLA Judy Darcy hosted the New Westminster Youth Ambassador Team in Victoria on April 14. Thestudents attended Question Period and were introduced in the house by the MLA, followed by picturesin the Rotunda, a tour of her office, lunch in the MLA dining room, a private tour of the library andtour of the Parliament Buildings. The team was extremely impressed with seeing how our provincialgovernment operates, in person. The history of “banging on the desk” and having the desks two swordlengths apart were fascinating bits of trivia from the past. From left: Sandra Farjo-Basheer (Greens &Beans), Nicholas Gomez (volunteer), Carli Henssler (Stonewater Group/Oxygen Yoga & Fitness), AlexZang (Royal City Centre), MLA Judy Darcy, Megan Hill (Key West Ford), Kevin Wang (Van Dop Gallery)and Raunaq Singh (The NewsLeader). The team thanks Key West Ford, who supplied a 15-passenger vanfor the team and escorts to travel to Victoria.

Ask the ProHow do I get the most out of my practice time on the Driving Range?1. Be methodical and Specific:

»Focus your thoughts on what you intend to practice on.»Be specific setting your goals.»The quality of your practice is more important than how many ‘swings’ you make.

2. Warm up your body: loosen your muscles.Check out Burnaby Golf’s warm-up video!

3. Specify your practice goals. For example, break your hour practice into15 minute intervals.15 minutes: work on chip and pitch shots15 minutes: work on alignment with a 3/4 swing using your 9 iron15 minutes: work on distance control by switching to a long iron and using a full swing15 minutes: work on accuracy by switching back to a specific club or shot for thatpractice session. You don’t need a full set of golf clubs when you visit the range. Bring a club you feelcomfortable with and another you have trouble with. 2 or 3 clubs at a time are all you need.

4. Be comfortable: Dress appropriately by wearing comfortable layered clothing.Remember to bring plenty of water and a light snack.

5. Have Fun: Practice with a friend. It’s more fun to create games by choosing targets andseeing who has the best aim.

We hope to see you working on your game at the Driving Range soon. Thanks for swinging by!

Tjernagel givesBrazilian Olympiana run for her moneymario [email protected]

Sprinter Raquel Tjernagel has beaten her high schoolrivals and older competitors at university. Now she’staking on the world. The NewWestminster secondary school student recently

raised eyebrows on the international track circuit when shefinished second in the 400m at the Bryan Clay Invitationalin Azusa, California. Her time of 52.26 was behind onlyBrazil’s Geisa Coutinho, a two-time Olympian and SouthAmerican champion who was the winner in 51.57.Her time was also more than two seconds faster than her

previous personal best, and it was the fastest time in theworld for a U20 athlete and the best time for a high schoolathlete in North America so far this season.Tjernagel also won the 400m race at the recent Emilie

Mondor Invitational track meet at Simon FraserUniversity, where she faced college competitors.Last year Tjernagel led her Hyacks high school team

to their first title in the B.C. High School Track and Field

Championships when she won the 100- and 200-metresprints, and was a member of the gold medal winning4X400 metre relay team.Tjernagel is also a member of the Coquitlam Cheetahs

Track Club. Her swiftness may be in her genes, as her cousinis Aaron Brown, a sprinter at the University of SouthernCalifornia who represented Canada at the 2012 Olympics.

Fourteen-year-old Hannah Ginoginois earning her independence one step at atime.Four months ago the Glenbrook

Middle School student began deliveringthe NewsLeader to homes in herneighbourhood. She sets out after schooltwo days a week with 117 papers, takingabout an hour and 20 minutes to finish herroute.“I like earning my own money so I

learn independence,” she says. “Instead ofasking my parents for money, I have a job.And by having money of my own I learnthat it’s not endless.”More carriers are needed for the four

community newspapers in Burnaby andNewWestminster: the Burnaby and NewWestminster NewsLeaders, Burnaby Nowand the NewWestminster Record. All of the papers are now owned by

Glacier Media, which amalgamated the

distribution centres and changed some ofthe publishing days.In NewWestminster, carriers now

deliver the Record on Wednesdays and theNewsLeader on Thursdays. In Burnaby, carriers now deliver the

Now on Wednesdays, the NewsLeader onThursdays and the Now on Fridays. Not all of the Burnaby carriers,

however, were able to make the switchfrom two to three days a week so there is aparticular need to find new carriers for theBurnaby papers. The circulation staff has been putting in

extra hours to fill any gaps in the routes.“Our distribution team is phenomenal,”

says manager Christy Foubert. “We careabout our carriers and need them to knowthat we appreciate them— they’re doing alot.“We also appreciate the patience of our

readers. We’re sorry for your frustration. Please be patient with us and our carriers.”If you would like to join the team

“I think it’s important to back up a bit and have thatdialogue,”Harper said. But councillors remained resolute in their goal to

modernize the city’s May Day festivities.“I think traditions have to be flexible,” said council

newcomer Mary Trentadu. “It needs to be meaningful tothe whole of the community. Things happening in this cityneed to be as inclusive as possible.”And the Lancer dance is anything but, especially for

some of the kids who are supposed to be focal point ofMay Day events, said Coun. Lorrie Williams.“What I did not enjoy was seeing the young knights

sitting in a corner while the Lancers came in,” saidWilliams of the traditional dance between the group ofvolunteer community leaders, mostly elderly gentlemen, and the May Queen suite that is comprised of Grade 6girls from the city’s elementary schools.Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said modernizing May Day

has been an ongoing process, but cancelling the Lancerdance became necessary when the city was informed bythe school district, which organizes the event’s daytimeactivities, that the evening banquet “is a city function, it’snot a school district function.”That means “there needs to be protocols that need to

be engaged,” said Puchmayr. “Best practices should be inplace. Nobody in the city that works with young peopleshould be above that.”Coun. Patrick Johnstone admitted the city may have

underestimated the attachment some members of thecommunity have to the Lancer dance tradition.“I’m comfortable in the direction we’re moving, but

I’m not happy with the discussion we’re having,” saidJohnstone. “A lot of it is not constructive. It’s not workingto bring people together.”Johnstone suggested the Lancers themselves could

help that process by better explaining their role and theimportance of maintaining their traditional dance. But MacGrotty said the tradition stands on its own

merit.“Traditions like the century-old dances are part of

the very fabric that keeps our community together,” saidMacGrotty. “They connect new generations with ourhistoric past, and I think city council has underestimatedthe value our residents place on that.”Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said the passion of debate over

the Lancer dance makes him wonder if the communityis ready to embrace wholesale change to some of itstraditions.“Some changes are desirable in a modern context,” said

McEvoy. “Is it an either/or situation? I’m not sure we’vereached that point yet.”But Harper said talking about changes openly with all

the parties involved could go a long way to soothing hardfeelings.“The real question is… whether it’s possible to have a

common vision for the role of the Lancers,” said Harper.“At least we have to have a stab at it.”

Maximizing one’s ability to hear well should be partof any smart career strategy. Individual performancein an organization is found to be directly related tolistening ability or perceived listening effectiveness. Infact, listening is one of the top skills employers seek inentry-level employees and in those being promoted.

People who both hear and listen well are also morelikely to establish positive working relationships withbosses, clients, and colleagues.

An alarming new study by the Better HearingInstitute (BHI) reveals a direct correlation betweenunaddressed hearing loss and earnings. The nationalsurvey, entitled “The efficacy of hearing aids in achiev-ing compensation equity in the workplace,” clearlydemonstrates that hearing loss has a significant impacton people’s ability to earn a livelihood. The study un-derscores how critically important it is for workers totreat hearing loss early in order to maximize their jobperformance and earning potential.

According to Sergei Kochkin, PhD, author of thestudy: “The real tragedy in delaying hearing losstreatment is that when left unaddressed, hearing lossnegatively affects individuals and their families for therest of their lives in the form of lost wages, lost promo-tions, lost opportunities, lost retirement income, andunrealized dreams. But when people with even mildhearing loss use hearing aids, they improve their jobperformance, increase their earning potential, enhancetheir communication skills, improve their professionalland interpersonal relationships, stave off depression, and improve their quality of life.”

Nothing staid or stodgy about this family station wagonCanadians have fallen in love with smallSUVs but there is still a hardcore group offamily station wagon fans.Volkswagen has continued to produce awagon in the Golf line for years, and thereare a few premium offerings like the BMW3 Series wagon and Mercedes E-Class, buteven the wagon is getting the crossovertreatment with cars like the SubaruOutback, the Audi Allroad and even thelarger Volvo CX70.The list of wagons really is rather small. There is one new entry into this club thatshould be considered by anyone whowants the versatility of a wagon butyearns for the precise handling that asedan offers, the Volvo V60.LooksVolvo, as a brand, has been struggling inNorth America due to the lack of fresh, new products. In a few months, the outdated, 12 year-old CX90 SUV will be replaced with an all-new model. To help keep the product lineup somewhat fresh,Volvohas introduced this V60, the wagon version of the S60sedan.Yes, a limited market but for those that like awagon, this is a very nice option. The lines are sleek andstylish and the R Design model, seen here, has larger18-inch or optional 19-inch wheels and a suspensionthat sits a tad lower. The back sports meaty lookingexhaust tips and the front has a two-tone spoiler tohelp round out the dynamic look. This setup will cost awhopping $51,700. To be fair the base model withoutthe R design and smaller engine and front wheel drive, starts at $40,200.InsideWhat Volvo does better than most car companies

is create interior designs that reallystand out and provide optimal comfort.Buyers can look everywhere and havea hard time finding seats that are morecomfortable than Volvo Seats, especiallythese sportier R Design seats. The dashis well designed with a centre consolethat has easy-to-understand graphics andlayout. The dash and doors are coveredin soft touch materials. This, along withpolished metal trim makes the interiorlook and feel rich. The graphics in theinstrument cluster are projected onto ascreen with a modern feel that brings thiscar up to date. The screen in the centreof the dash is a different story, lookingrather small by today’s standards. Theback seat has plenty of room, even foradults, but because of the curvy exteriorshape, the back cargo area isn’t as roomy

as the rather square VW Golf Sportwagon.

DriveThe V60 is available with a number of enginechoices and the base engine might just be the bestoverall value. It comes with a 2.0L direct injectionturbocharged 4-cylinder, putting out 240hp. This baseT5 Drive-E unit is only available with front wheeldrive but comes with an 8-speed automatic; all theother V60s come with a 6-speed unit. The next stepup is the T5 all wheel drive with a turbocharged 2.5L5-cylinder with just slightly more power at 250hp.The top model is the T6 R Design with a 300hpturbocharged 6-cylinder. What this car has is standardAWD and a refined ride that produces smiles at everycorner. The way Volvo has been able to marry comfortand handling performance and grip is superb.

Verdict

To counteract the wagon stigma, Volvo has evenadded a crossover version of this wagon called theV60 Cross Country. If you like a sporty and greathandling car with supremely comfy seats and enoughpower for any task, this V60 T6 is fantastic.

The LowdownPower: 2.0L with 240hp, 2.5L with 250hp and 3.0Lwith 300hpFill-up: 9.8L/6.6L/100km (city/highway)Sticker price: $40,200-$51,700

The weather was perfect. The coupleheaded out for their walk at 9:30, followingtheir usual route along the north side ofColumbia towards Westminster Quay.Noel had arranged for his proposal to be

posted on the west side of the marquee, soJohnstone couldn’t see it coming. As they passed in front of the NewWest

police station, Noel looked across the streetand said, “Oh, look who’s coming to theColumbia.”He didn’t mean comedian Tony Rock.It took Johnstone a few moments to

process the words she was reading. At first, she said, she couldn’t understand why Noelwas excited the Columbia was advertising

its “elegant wedding venues.”Then the rest of the billing sunk in.“I was in shock,” Johnstone said. “I

couldn’t talk. I didn’t know it was real.”But when Noel dropped to one knee and

took her hand, she knew her proposal hadfinally come.“There was always these moments

I thought he would propose,” saidJohnstone. “He wanted to surprise me.”The couple called their parents and told

them there was a surprise for them onColumbia Street. As they awaited theirarrival, a police officer came out of thestation to congratulate them. The public proposal caught the eye of

passersby. Photos of the marquee wereposted on Twitter.“I never expected him

to do such a public thing,”said Johnstone. “I’mthe extrovert. He’s moreconservative, calm andrelaxed.”And now they’re

engaged, with the weddingset for Sept. 2016.At a venue still to bedetermined.
