Saturday marks the end of National Organ Donor Awareness Week, and the B.C. Transplant Society is taking the occa- sion to mobilize people to register as organ donors. “In B.C., we have about 17 per cent of the population registered, and we’d love to see that number rise,” said Allison Colina, spokeswoman for the society. With the launch of its 2011 campaign, Live Life. Pass it On, the society is turning to the omnipresent social media to help get British Columbians informed. The society has launched a Facebook app that takes a registered donor’s photo and adds a tag that reads “I gave my heart” to show sup- port for organ donation. Colina said old donor cards and stickers are no longer recognized by the province since the donor registry was created in 1997. The new system, she said, is remark- ably easy and fast to register with. “Someone can register online on our organ donor registry in a matter of min- utes. The whole process, including signing the registration form with a legal digital signature, is completely online,” she said. Colina said because so few people are signed up to be organ donors, those wait- ing for a desperately needed transplant have to wait that much longer. She noted that even registered donors are rarely eli- gible to donate organs after they die. “Very few deaths result in a potential donor. A person has to die in hospital, on a ventilator. It’s often in pretty tragic cir- cumstances like a head injury or a stroke or aneurism – quite sudden,” she said. In the event of such a tragedy, every health-care professional in B.C. has instant access to a database of all organs ready for a potential transplant, and patients at the highest risk are given priority. “Many families actually take a sense of peace in the fact that their loved one was able to be a donor, and they feel very proud of their loved one because they’ve basically become a hero in the lives of the transplant recipients that they’ve saved,” Colina said. A 2008 study by transplant specialists confirmed Colina’s sentiment. One of those lives saved is now literally a “poster girl” for the benefits of organ donation. Maxine Martell was a close friend of Eva Markvoort – the former Miss New Westminster who passed away from cystic fibrosis in March 2010 and whose 65_RedRoses blog raised worldwide awareness of the need for organ donation. Carrie McLaren,Green Party of CanadaBriefly introduce yourself:

By day, a junior accountant in aBurnaby office, the rest of my time issplit between keeping up-to-date onlocal news, campaigning for theGreens and educating myself ona variety of issues.

What political experience doyou have?

Ran locally for MP in 2008election and MLA in 2009. Notbeing an expert or professionalpolitician means that I can thinkoutside of the “it’s always beendone that way” box.

What issue will you prioritize ifelected?

For Burnaby-New Westminster theissues are a combination of homelessnessand lack of jobs. I’d like to make sure towork with Burnaby and the province toget a homeless shelter/transition homecreated in Burnaby. Then on to creating

a national affordable housing plan. Oneimmediate action would be to supportthe delivery of increased social housingdollars to provincial and municipal gov-ernments through the Canada Mortgageand Housing Corporation. Get back intofunding co-operative housing, and therenovations of older homes and build-

ings to be more energy efficient. That would also help with jobcreation.

What is your party’s track recordon dealing with that issue?

Since we’ve not had thechance to prove ourselves, I canonly say that this is one of myown priorities.

If you could be any superhero, which one would you be?

After much consultation withcomic book aficionados – Green Lantern, whose power is limited only by hisimagination. Looking forward to seeingthe movie this summer.

Garth Evans,Liberal Party of CanadaBriefly introduce yourself:

My name is Garth Evans. I live inBurnaby with my family and practiselaw for a living.

My practice is concentratedin the real estate area, par-ticularly the development ofaffordable and special needhousing.

I am involved with manycommunity groups in the rid-ing and am a director of theFairhaven United ChurchHomes Society and the L’ArcheVancouver Society, both ofwhich provide care for seniorsand disadvantaged people inSouth Burnaby.

What political experience do you have?I was a Burnaby city councillor from

2005 to 2008.I have been involved as a supporter

in many past Liberal party campaigns.

What issue will you prioritize if elect-ed?

The most important issue in this elec-tion is the protection and enhancementof Canada’s social programs. Healthcare, seniors’ care, education, immigra-tion services and affordable housing willall be at risk if the current government

is re-elected. A Liberal govern-ment will protect Canada’suniversal health-care systemand provide it with substan-tial additional funding. It willalso take steps to shorten theunacceptably long waits, up to14 years, for family reunifica-tion immigration applicationsto be processed. It will alsoprovide increased funding forseniors’ care, affordable hous-ing and other social programs.

What is your party’s track record ondealing with that issue?

The Liberal Party of Canada has anexcellent record respecting the establish-ment and protection of Canada’s socialprograms. Liberal governments brought

Paul Forseth, ConservativeParty of CanadaBriefly introduce yourself:

I am a Canadian-born BritishColumbian, who was a member ofParliament for B.C. from 1993 to 2006. Igraduated from UBC and alsoattended SFU and UVic. I live inthe Burnaby-New Westminsterelectoral district. I am marriedand have adult children.

Previously for 21 years, Iwas a family justice counsellor, divorce mediator, child custodyinvestigator, probation andparole officer, and youth courtofficer in the corrections branchand courts of B.C. I have spentconsiderable time on humanrights issues, democratic renewaland religious freedom in other countries.I continue as a volunteer on various com-munity boards.

What political experience do you have?During my 12 years of elected office I

was instrumental to sponsor major planks

of the Reform Party platform concern-ing justice and environmental policy, andled House of Commons debates on thosesubjects. During my Canadian Alliancetenure, I was part of the shadow cabinetunder Stockwell Day, leader of the officialOpposition.

During the Conservative party term, Iwas our party’s lead representa-tive on the government oper-ations and estimates committee, and co-chaired the sub-commit-tee which held in-camera investi-gative hearings about Liberal Mr.Radwanski who was accused offalsifying documents by the aud-itor general.

I demonstrated my flex-ible negotiation skills by beingamong the very few MPs inparliamentary history, ever tohave his private member’s bill,

coming from the Opposition side of theHouse, cooperatively taken over by thegovernment and incorporated into alarger piece of government legislation.(Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act – dis-charge list).

Peter Julian, NewDemocratic PartyBriefly introduce yourself.

My name is Peter Julian, and I havebeen the member of Parliament since2004 for Burnaby and New Westminster.Four generations of the Julianfamily have lived in Burnabyand New Westminster for over80 years. Previous to becomingan MP I was a financial admin-istrator and won consecutivebusiness excellence awardsfor running an important B.C.organization.

What political experience doyou have?

I feel privileged to haveserved Burnaby and NewWestminster through successive elec-tions. I have been re-elected twicesince 2004 with progressively increas-ing majorities. A 300 vote majority in2004 became a 4,000 vote majority in2006 and in 2007 the vote majority was7,000. Our community office has helped

thousands of families in Burnaby-NewWestminster and the primary role of anMP is to help families as well as indi-viduals. My critic areas have includedinternational trade, transportation, persons with disabilities and Westernfisheries. I stand third in the House ofCommons for the size and scope of my

private member’s legislation, which includes legislation tocombat drunk driving, restitu-tion for victims of crime andthe elimination of toxic chem-icals.

What issue will you prioritizeif elected?

I would eliminate the hatedHST which has hurt small busi-nesses and families in Burnabyand New Westminster. I wouldstop expensive fighter jet con-

tracts and massive corporate tax cutsas this money should be going towardsspending for more important priorities. The priorities should be the local econ-omy, raising seniors out of poverty, pro-viding supports for families coping with

Whatever is responsible for the lowvoter turnout expected in the May 2federal election, it can’t be a shortage ofinformation about the politicians andtheir politics.

Political parties, individualcandidates, their supportersand detractors, and punditsand commentators with vary-ing levels of expertise andcredibility are everywhere.

They have Facebook pages andTwitter accounts. They populate theblogosphere and every corner of the

Internet. Some have developed theirown mobile phone apps to keep in touchwith fans.

There are still the old-fashionedmeans of contacting prospective voters,

like email (who would havethought only a decade ago thatemail could ever be old-fash-ioned?) and television (fromthe attack ads that assaulted

us months before the election call to thenationally broadcast debates).

And there are radio and newspapers– not to mention that really old-fash-

ioned communication: talking to people, face to face.

That an immense quantity of infor-mation is available is without question. But the quality is often questionable. In an age in which anyone can offeropinions for national perusal, how canthe average voter sift through it all, withexpectations of a credible, informed con-clusion?

For our part, we are offering coverageof the federal election at the local levelin the pages of this paper.

Check out Q&As with Burnaby-New

Westminster candidates on page 3 andelection news items starting on page 1 ofthis edition.

And don’t forget our online editionat www.royalcityrecord.com – where, byclicking on our Decision 2011 link, youcan find up-to-the-minute national cov-erage from our associated regional news-papers, at Decision Canada, provided bycanada.com.

There’s a lot of information out there. We can only promise to do our best toprovide the information you really need, and can trust.

Why aren’t peoplebothering to vote?

As sure as spring bringsskunk cabbage and thescent of freshly spread

manure, a federal election bringsthe suggestion that we make vot-ing mandatory.

Don’t do it, politicians. The “Let’s just make everyone

do it!” approach is thrown aboutas an answer to the (alleged)problem of declining voter turn-out. That’s not to imply that voterturnout isn’t declining. It hit 58.8per cent in the 2008 contest, afterbouncing back and forth betweenthe high 60s and mid-70s duringthe previous half century. Butturnout has never been close to100 per cent. In fact, it flirted withthe low 60s in the 1890s, not farabove recent levels. And the high-est level ever was 79.4 per centparticipation in the 1958 election. We have yet to crack 80 per centparticipation in any election.

The question should not be,“Should we make everyonevote?” but, “Why don’t peoplewant to vote?”

Let me try to answer that assomeone who has serious doubtsabout voting this year.◗ The fear that my vote won’tmatter. Oh sure, they say everyvote is important. But in Langley,

where I live, the incumbent MPgot 62.5 per cent of the total votes. While it’s an extreme example, there are dozens of other ridingsacross Canada where puttingup the lawn signs and holdingdebates is nothing more than agame with a foregone conclusion.

Keep in mind that I havenever, ever voted for a winningcandidate at the federal or pro-vincial level. If I was a hockeyplayer who’d lost every game for14 years, I’d have gotten the hintby now and hung up my skates.

I’m aware that the flip side ofsaying your vote doesn’t matter isthat, if enough people say that, itbecomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. But 62 per cent? Come on.◗ The choices aren’t that great. I’ma firm believer in the hold-your-nose-and-pick-the-least-offen-sive-candidate approach. I havestrongly held opinions, but theydon’t map onto the political land-scape of any party. When I vote,I tend to vote against the partiesand policies I really hate, ratherthan for one that speaks to me.◗ It’s not exactly à la carte politics.Believe it or not, this lefty, bleed-ing-heart pinko agrees with theConservatives from time to time. And there are Liberal policies thatI find palatable, and NDP andGreen ideas that send me into fitsof frothing rage.

But I can’t pick and choosefrom the policies of the parties. All I can do is make one vote, forone potential MP, who may ormay not win, may or may not siton the back benches, may or

OUR VIEWTHE RECORD

Critic has a right to speak outDear Editor:

Re: Mayor has vision for future, Letters to theeditor, The Record, April 16. After I finished readingMs. Jaser’s letter I simply had to shake my headin disgust. Why is it that New West seems to wantto beat down any one with a divergent point ofview from the status quo? I would like to requestthe mayor and those councillors who are seekingre-election, as well as new politicos, to elevate thediscussion. Refrain from threats, character assas-sination and immature comments such as “runningsomeone out of town.” This later comment wouldbe laughable if it weren’t so ugly in nature.

Accusing Mr. Bell for the lack of shoppers onFront Street area lacks intellect. Andrew Fleming’sarticle of March 26 (Dealers recall good old days)reports that neither the toxic blob, nor the PierPark has had, or will have, any economical impacton Antique Alley. In the article, Leona Ruttle from

Antique Alley Collectables and Movie Props states,“We’re not holding out high hopes for the park.”

A member of the Downtown BIA and businessowner, Bill Shannon was reported as saying that hedoubts the local antique industry will ever see thereturn of the good old days.

Whether fairly or not, the city – both elected andemployed – is responsible for the conditions thatcaused the current state of Front Street– not Mr. Bell. That is called leadership!

As for the park, everyone loves a park, especiallyone on the waterfront – but at what cost? Ms. Jaser, you seem quite content to be getting half a park, adjacent to a toxic blob for twice the promised price.Good for you, you have a right to say so and to paythe high taxes to enjoy it. However, there are manyothers who simply do not share your opinion andhave the right do so –without being threatened!

The truth is many citizens were shocked when

Mr. Bell’s findings were verified by TheresaMcManus in her article ‘Toxic Blob’ (TheRecord, Nov. 10). Why is it this informa-tion only came to light from the tenacioussleuthing of a concerned citizen? Pleasenote, it was not an employee or electedofficial that brought this hazard to thepublic’s attention. So one could concludefrom this that: they either didn’t know andshould be thanking Mr. Bell for the discov-ery – or they did know and said nothing.Either way I can only deduce that we areall better served by having Mr. Bell as partof our community in this matter.

So to Mr. Bell, I would like to thank himfor volunteering his time and energy tohelp make New West a safer place to live. Isuggest, Ms. Jaser, that the one who shouldbe offering the apology is you to Mr.Bell for your inaccurate and inappropriaterants in the local media. Elevate yourself– you may find it liberating!

Personal attack was wrongDear Editor:

Re: Mayor has vision for future, Lettersto the editor, The Record, April 16. I wouldlike to congratulate Mrs. Sandra D. Jaser inpassing her RealPolitik College course inAd Hominem Logic 101.

An “ad hominem” attack is a damagecontrol strategy in which a claim or argu-ment is rejected on the basis of irrelevantfacts about the person presenting a claimor argument. This type of damage controlstrategy has the following form:1. Person A makes Claim X.2. Person B makes an attack on Person A.3. Therefore, Person A’s claim is false.

So let’s start with...◗ Person A makes Claim X:

I have claimed that the railroad landsnorth of the Westminster Pier Park arethemselves a brownfield site heavily con-taminated with hazardous levels of tet-rachloroethylene, trichloroethylene andcichloroethylene, and therefore must beavoided. I have questioned why the Cityof New Westminster, having known aboutthe toxic railway right-of-way (which itowns) for many months, has not postedsigns alerting citizens to the toxic soils.

This claim is not in dispute, as the City

of New Westminster sent a report to theMinistry of Environment eight monthsago outlining how the railway land soilsare high risk for contamination. That samereport outlines how the railway lands aremore contaminated than the park soilswere (that’s saying something consideringhow toxic the soils of the park were).◗ Person B makes attack on Person A:

Sandra D. Jaser mounted an all-outcharacter attack on me with such state-ments as, “I wondered about his characterand Googled his name – page after page ofnothing good to say … how sad.” ”Withthe unrelenting, sensationalized efforts tospit on our city that he lives in, it seemshe is in a state of precarious assumptions.”“After reading the endless scare tacticswritten by Christopher Bell … the alarm-ist writings that Christopher Bell keepsbabbling/squealing on about … Mr. Bellobviously promotes the use of the tracks asplaygrounds for children and joggers.”

I was most troubled and disturbedwhen Mrs. Jaser ended one diatribe withthe words “Stay tuned” and then endedher next piece of negative screed with theominous warning words of, “Be thankfulwe are not in the past. Back then, theywould have run you out of town.”◗ Therefore, Person A’s claim is false.

Mrs. Jaser has forcefully exhorted thatnone of my concerns about the toxic rail-way lands are to be believed because I aman unbalanced, ruthless, malicious, lying, alarmist, fear mongering, pig of a man.Well, Ms. Jaser, I’ll stand by my record(Google or otherwise), as I am very proudof my citizen advocacy work. You can hurlall of the invective you wish, but yourwords will not make the railway lands anyless toxic to humans.

TellHisWorship(whoseheart, youclaim,is truly dedicated to New Westminster)to hold a community workshop on thetoxic hazards (and the millions and mil-lions of dollars being spent on testing andcleanup) of the Westminster Pier Park andrailway right-of-way (although the city issaying they will not clean up the railwayright-of-way lands which the city owns)and then we will see who is Wright.

Mrs. Jaser, you demand I apologize tocity officials. You have more nerve than anelectric eel. I would accept a public apol-ogy from you for your very unkind (andvery public) words directed at me.

may not cave in and com-promise.◗ Negativity and person-ality. As I write this, thefour main party leadersare scrapping on TV aboutethics and leadership abil-ity and coalitions that mayor may not exist. Whenpolicy does get mentioned,it tends to be “X is a strong

leader who can providea stable economy,” or “Xcares about families.” Thelast time I checked, strengthof character was notenough to stave off a reces-sion, and if I wanted a lead-er to care about me person-ally, I’d have friended himon Facebook already.

The election machineis working overtime to try

and convince me to vote forX, Y, or Z, but it’s forgottento give me enough reasonsto mark a ballot, period.

So what would makeme happier about voting?A better system and moreparticipation, for starters.

If you could be any superhero, which one would you be?

If I could be a superhero, I think

I would like to be Liberalman, mod-elled after Superman. Then I wouldbe able to fly around doing good, protecting the disadvantaged andpunishing evil. I suppose in a waythat is how I would see my role as amember of Parliament.

both young children and aging seniors, com-bating homelessness and fixing problems withhealth care.

What is your party’s track record on dealingwith this issue?

Tommy Douglas, voted the greatestCanadian, and the New Democratic Party estab-lished our publicly funded health-care system, and we will continue to work towards sustain-ing this fair, inclusive system. NDP leader JackLayton has pledged to take immediate action toaddress seniors living in poverty and studentdebt. The NDP caucus has proposed to put inplace a national homelessness strategy and toensure funding for post-secondary education.

If you could be any superhero, which onewould you be?

When I was growing up, Captain Canuckwas my favourite superhero. Captain Canuckstood up for the disadvantaged and upheldfundamental Canadian values.

What issue will you prioritize if elected?I will ensure that I represent the whole community to

Ottawa and not the other way around. I will stop the partisanmisuse of the MP householder mailed reports. I will advocatestrongly on anti-crime issues. I will also change the pattern ofnegative voting into positive voting, to help our community.

What is your party’s track record on dealing with that issue? The government has passed or tabled many incremental

improvements to the justice system to provide the basic toolsfor public safety, including anti-human smuggling, but sadly, the NDP voted against all of them.

If you could be any superhero, which one would you be?There are many that we can remember who gave of them-

selves, as they looked forward to make things better for thenext generation.

Locally, my father dedicated his life to help the human con-dition as a reverend-minister.

He inspired thousands to choose to live better, while he ledin the construction of seniors’ low-income housing. Leading byexample, and selflessly serving the community is a worthy pathfor me to follow.

High Blood Pressure?

By Dr. C. Hammoud, PhD - Must help or money refundedIf your stomach is excessively acidic it means all your cells in yourbody are acidic. By correcting the excessively acidic stomach youshould not need anti-acid pills to control reflux (heartburn). All acidiccells are deprived of oxygen and are the breeding ground for manyillnesses including weight gain, diabetes, stress, vascular diseasesand cancer. This fact was discovered by Dr. Otto Warburg years agoand he received two Nobel Prizes. You can change your acidiccells in your body by eating 80% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, fruit). Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from ourown bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bonemarrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other typesof tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply andare able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Locatedeverywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layeredbetween the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stemcells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that wouldreplenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. Ifour bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can resultin many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, infact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stemcells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability torejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as thesecan only be transplanted by surgery and are subject to immuno-suppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection.Naturopathic Doctorsummarized his experience in writing after using this Stem CellActivator: Used for all organ and tissue damage, heart attack damage,osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, musculardystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and otherdiseases and tissue damage. “It was scary to wait, to not know when it was coming,to not know if I was going to make it,” she said.

Then the call came, and Martell was being prepped forsurgery within nine hours.

“I was just thrilled that I was able to be here to get mar-ried and buy our first house, and then my doctor broughtit to my attention that because I was very strong andstable, I could try and have a baby,” she said.

Now, 10 years since the transplant, Martell is the proudmother of a 15-month-old son, Lucas.

Markvoort and photographer Cyrus McEachern cap-tured a photo of Martell five months pregnant and paint-ed a stylized heart on top.

“Being that I was pregnant, we thought it was an extrastep for the gift of life,” Martell said.

The image is now used to promote transplant aware-ness in B.C.

Martell implores everyone to become a registereddonor. There are 350 British Columbians waiting.

“Going from not knowing if I was going to be here tohaving a whole family and a life like anyone else, that wasan absolute miracle. I’m living proof that someone can gofrom almost dying to living a life completely,” she said.“I’m grateful for my donor family. It’s so important to getit done. You may need an organ yourself.”

2010 was a marquee year for film shootsin New Westminster – the busiest year inrecent memory.

According to a report from Scott Harper, the City of New Westminster’s filmingcoordinator, the city granted 61 film per-mits in 2010 for everything from big-budget Hollywood movies to TV pilotsand commercials, totalling 113 days offilming and bringing in $476,746 in fees.

In 2009, the city granted 50 permits for86 days of filming and brought in $279,995in permit revenue.

“It’s a combination of things. The econ-omy is better. Vancouver in general is justbusier with filming,” Harper said. “It’sprobably because people are getting to

know that New Westminster is an easyplace to film in and they’re coming hereas a result.”

Harper said other factors that play in tothe ebb and flow of film activity in NewWest include the value of the Canadiandollar, provincial tax exemptions, filmingindustry collective agreement status, avail-able studio space and script content.

Harper said location managers oftenpick New West because certain areas can“be” other famous cities like downtown, which bears some resemblance to SanFrancisco, or Front Street, which can poseas New York City.

Harper said there is no accurate way torank B.C. municipalities on film activitybut in revenues, New West placed third in2010 behind Richmond and Vancouver.

A big portion of 2010’s windfall seemsto have come from one high profile flick– This Means War, a romantic comedystaring A-listers Reese Witherspoon, TomHardy and Chris Pine.

Permit revenues from the movie exceed-

ed $250,000.This Means War spent several days shoot-

ing downtown last November, including ascene with a car crashing through theFront Street parkade. The movie, set forrelease later this year, is about two life-long friends engaging in battle when theyfall for the same woman.

Other notables from last year includedDiary of a Wimpy Kid 2, The Big Year,Supernatural and Hellcats.

The City of New Westminster marketsitself for filming through a network of filmindustry resources, looking to bring inpermit revenues and the spinoff businessa film shoot brings.

The result of film revenue for the citymeans property taxes are about 0.5 to oneper cent lower than they would be other-wise, Harper said.

“This value does not consider the non-permit economic multiplier effect, forexample, goods or services purchasedwhile filming or wages paid to staff whoreside in the community and, in turn, fur-

ther stimulate the local economy,” he said.“A past B.C. Film Commission study esti-mated that the economic spinoff of filmingin New Westminster was $8 million andis approximately $1.2 billion in BritishColumbia, of which, 96 per cent is spent inMetro Vancouver.”

While neighbourhood conflicts can popas a result of film shoots, Harper said: “Inmy opinion there are few, if any, draw-backs to hosting film companies. There aresome inconveniences, to be sure, but over-all the inconveniences are far outweighedby the positive spinoffs,” he said. “My jobis to mitigate impacts as much as possible. One example of this is encouraging filmcompanies to lessen their overall foot-print in the various neighbourhoods theychoose to film in.”

Harper said it is too soon to say what2011 holds for filming, but he has hopesfor some more big-budget Hollywoodcasts to role through town.

“I think it’s going to be another greatyear,” he said.

I am pleased to be a part of the Citizenof the Year and Bernie Legge CulturalAwards for 2011. As a Board Memberof the New Westminster Chamber ofCommerce, a business person with RE/MAX Advantage NW, a long-time residentof this city and a local volunteer, I’ve hadthe good fortune to meet many peopleover the years, who dedicate countlesshours to the betterment of this City.

In my every day life, I have often beenpleasantly surprised by the level ofcommitment people demonstrate in theirefforts to make positive contributions toour community. The Citizen of the YearAward Nominees lend their support, careand compassion to a variety of causeswhile the Bernie Legge Cultural AwardNominees contribute to the arts andcreativity in our community. I’m pleasedthat these Awards exist to recognize theselflessness and giving nature of so manyamazing individuals.

It is my honour to be Chair of the Citizen ofthe Year and Bernie Legge Cultural AwardsCommittee this year. Good Luck to all2010 Award Nominees and thank youfor enhancing the living experiencehere in New Westminster.

Sincerely,Patti Goss,Chair New Westminster Chamber of Commerce

A TRIBUTEto individuals who haveto individuals who haveenriched our communityenriched our community

When I was nominated last year, Ifelt honoured and overwhelmed.WhenIheardthatIwasthewinner,I was even more overwhelmed- absolutely flabbergasted! Icouldn’t believe it!

I had been nominated oncebefore and hadn’t won so Ireally didn’t expect it. I knewfrom before, that the winnerhas a chance to say a fewwords so (just in case), I hadprepared a little speech. Evenso, when they called my name,I was so surprised, I forgot allabout it. I didn’t know what tosay. I remember thanking theperson who nominated me andthanking the committee butthat’s about it. Being nominatedwas such an honour but winningwas unbelieveable!

Since then, I’ve had my picturein the paper so many times.I’d had my picture in there

before but now it says “Citizenof the Year”. I’m really gladbecause I think it’s given moreawareness to the Food Bankand Homelessness and wereally need to do that. Lots oftimes now, when people cometo the Food Bank, they’ll lookup on the wall and see theNewspaper clipping with mypicture. They’ll read it and say,“Hey, that’s you!” It’s a goodkind of feeling.

People I run into sometimescomment on my being “Citizenof the Year”. It’s really nice tobe recognized (even thoughI was never looking for anyrecognition) and to feel like

I’m doing a good job and thatpeople notice it - It’s a feather inmy cap.

My son says he’s happy for meand that “It’s about time I gotsome reward!” I kind of thinkthat my reward is waiting forme in heaven.

One thing I did this year thatwas a lot of fun, is participate inthe Hyack Parade in May. I neverwould have done that if I wasn’t“Citizen of the Year”!

I’d just like to thank people verymuch for this honour and forall of their support. I’m lookingforward to going to this year’sAwards Banquet on April 27th.

Look inside. What do yousee? Do you have time tolook inside? Or are youbusy rushing to work,

driving kids to soccer, standing in line at

the grocery store,meeting office

deadlines, fighting rushhour traffic … Every nowand then we need tolook inside. That is partof a civilized society.

So much of art andcultureisanexamination,a reflection. Movies, plays and musicals tell usstories about ourselves.Think of Schindler’s List.

Paintings and sculpturesreflect the life aroundus. Think of the greatEuropean war paintings.

Poems and stories mirrorwho we are or who weshould or shouldn’t be.At least one book shouldhave made a profoundimpression on your life. Ifyou can’t say this – searchdeeper. Or start with thebook How the Irish SavedCivilization or the bookWhy the Greeks Matter.

Art is also a diversion– a time to laugh, a timeto leave behind our

troubles for a short while– or laugh at our troubleslike Fawlty Towers.

Culture is who we are.It is an education andan understanding thatincludes philosophyand history. We havean opportunity to startunderstanding who weare as individuals andas a society when westop and pause and lookinside. And it is the artistswho can frame thosemoments for us.

Iwasaskedtowriteaboutthe highlights of my yearas the Bernie LeggeCultural Award Winner. The biggest highlightis that the award existsat all – that culture isrecognized in the RoyalCity. That even if wedon’t fully understandwhy, we pay homage toit. And I thank the NewWestminster Chamber of

Commerce for creatingsuch an award.

I would also like tosay that I have alwaysbeen impressed withthe dedicated groupof people in NewWestminster focused onpromoting the arts.

The wonderfulVagabondPlayers come to mindwith their charmingtheatrenestledinQueen’sPark. Then there is theNew Westminster ArtsCouncil with its memberswho have worked sohard over the years andsoldiered on despite themany challenges thatface the arts. Also, thereis Royal City MusicalTheatre – one of the bestin Canada. Now I’ll stopmentioning names, for ifI continue I’m bound tomiss some.

One highlight that Imust mention was being

in the Hyack GrandeParade. Being born inNew Westminster, I firstattended the parade ina stroller. As a youngsterwatching the paradeeach year – the fantasticmarching bands, themagical floats, theprancing horses, theclowns – I never dreamedthat one day I’d be in theparade.

All in all I thoroughlyenjoyed my year as theBernie Legge CulturalAward winner. It means alot to me to have won theaward and to know thatthe award is there as acontinual reminder thatour society values culture– and understands theincredible depth thatculture brings to eachone of us.

So, read a book. Go to aplay. Buy a painting. Andabove all – look inside.

Heritage B.C. has nominated the RoyalCity for the prestigious Prince of WalesPrize.

The prize is awarded annually to oneCanadian municipality that has demon-strated a strong and sustained commit-ment to the conservation of its historicplaces.

Victoria won the award in 2001, whichwas the last time the award went to amunicipality in B.C.

“New Westminster can be very proudof its leadership in heritage conserva-tion over the last century-and-a-half,”said a staff report about the nomination.“Together with the community, the city’sheritage program continues to be innova-tive, dedicated and successful. HopefullyHeritage Canada will agree.”

The submission package to HeritageCanada includes information showingthat the commitment to heritage in NewWestminster is shared between the City ofNew Westminster and the community.

“It is very exciting,” said Julie Schueck, the city’s heritage planner. “Heritage B.C.

nominated us. I am really excited aboutit.”

The Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) hasbeen known to present the award himself.

“Whenever his schedule allows, theytry to arrange the presentation so he isthere. He was there in 2009 in Edmonton,”Schueck said. “It is a big to-do. It is some-thing he himself feels very strongly about. It is one of his interests.”

Coun. Bob Osterman is ecstatic aboutthe nomination and believes the submis-sion about New Westminster is phenom-enal.

“We are very proud of our heritage,”he said. “We are very committed to reallypromoting it.”

Osterman believes that winning thePrince of Wales Heritage Prize would giveNew Westminster heritage stature in NorthAmerica and would also assist in tourismpromotion. As the owner of a wartimebungalow that’s listed on the heritageregister, he personally hopes to attend theworkshop.

“It’s not simply the big, beautiful homesof Queen’s Park,” he said about heri-tage. “It’s everywhere. It’s Sapperton, it’sQueensborough.”

Feelings About UnemploymentThis article is by Chris Newell, Career Coachand Facilitator with Transitions Career & BusinessConsultants.

Unemployment is one of the most difficult situations aperson can experience in their life. It ranks fourth on

the stress scale after personal injury, death of a family member and divorce. It is a major life crisis that can throw a person off balance and, especially ifthey are not expecting it, they can experience an incredible shock. When a person loses their job, they may go through a grieving processsimilar to that associated with the death of a loved one. The stages orreactions of grief include the denial stage – the disbelief or “I can’t believeit but know it’s true”; anger - at the injustice and feelings of no control overthe situation; and then the depression stage – which can include feelingsof desperation and discouragement. When people lose a job, they are not only faced with the loss of theirlivelihood but other losses as well, such as status or identity. Some peoplemay feel the loss associated with having a routine, some place to go everyday or the social elements a workplace can provide. In working through the process of unemployment, it is important to seekemotional support from people you trust. Unemployed individuals whoreceive support are less likely to suffer from depression, low self-esteemand illness due to stress. However, sometimes the people we expect to be available to help usthrough a difficult time are not necessarily available. Family members mayhave little energy to spare or are projecting their own fears about yoursituation back onto you. Friends may be too busy. If this happens, it maybe beneficial to talk to a professional counselor, someone who can listen toyour problems without judgment, biases or agendas. They can even assistyou in looking at new possibilities and provide strategies and resources foryou to actualize them. The Transitions Program, a free 3-week career exploration program, isavailable to all unemployed people in the Lower Mainland. Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Apr. 24 - April 30★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: Delays end. You cancharge ahead on new fronts. You’ve already entereda brand new world – it is sleek, clear, alive, evennervous, and within this new world, friends, ideas, inventiveness and fun are more important thanmoney. You’re going to have fun Sunday to Tuesday – and foreight years! Your freedom is growing. The shy, quiet, dreamy and elusive friends of the past decade fallaway, to be replaced by bright, sharp-minded types. This week, this “peeling off” causes a relationshipdisappointment. For the month ahead, chase money, seek higher earnings, cultivate new clients.Taurus April 20-May 20: Your energy, charismaand effectiveness rise strongly! The delays of Aprilhave ended. Start new projects, see and be seen, tackle chores that previously intimidated you.Despite this surge of energy, one part of you remainscontemplative, and is tied in to private matters, quietplanning sessions, government liaisons, etc. Yourreal “break out” will come in June, when a year ofhuge luck will commence! Meanwhile, be ambitiousSunday/Monday – luck is with you. Watch legal, ethical factors all week. Change is needed here.Happiness midweek! Retreat, rest Friday/Saturday.Gemini May 21-June 20: Recent delays end,but indecision continues unless you make choicesbased on gentle love, foreign travel/contacts, cultureand intellectual pursuits, which all draw you nicelySunday to Tuesday. The weeks ahead emphasizerest, contemplation, solitude. Retreat, plan, prepareand fulfil obligations. Contact government agencies, institutions, charitable organizations. Your spiritualside grows – and might become, June onward, asignificant relationship factor. If your hopes abouta special person are disappointed, alter lovegoals. Be ambitious Wednesday. “Half happiness”late week.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your future looks bright!Optimism, new hopes, friends, wishes, entertainmentand light romance come waltzing in. You’ll enjoy theweeks ahead – even more so because your positionin the world is on the rise, your ambitions meet luck.Recent warnings about not starting anything neware now over. Sunday to Tuesday feature changes, big finances, commitments, sexual urges, lifestylechanges and health diagnosis, all productively. Apartner or competitor isn’t thrilled with you, though,so proceed cautiously – all week. Gentle love mightpoint to the right mate for you midweek!Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis for the nextfew weeks will be on ambition, prestige relationships, your status in the world. All looks fairly smoothhere, no big highs nor deep lows. Meanwhile, yourexpansion (usually lucky) in love, legal, intellectual, international and cultural zones continues, especiallyFriday/Saturday – but work or health demands,or your caution, can interfere. Recent delays end,so charge ahead with new ideas, relationshipsand projects, especially Sunday to Tuesday, when exciting meetings and prospects arise!Research, financial and sexual commitments arefavoured midweek.Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A mellow, understandingvibe fills the weeks ahead. This promotes gentle love, far travel, intellectual pursuits, legal and culturalaffairs, education and publishing. Recent delaysdissolve; you no longer need to avoid new projects.Tackle chores Sunday to Tuesday – everything runssmoothly. One caution: the first half of this weekmight cause a barrier in income zones, or a conflictbetween sexual desire and ethics. This continuesmore softly, “workably” the last half. You face differentrelationships now to 2025, in love, business, with thepublic – think “enchanted.”

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A month of mystery, depths, investment, financial manoeuvres, intimacy, commitment, lifestyle changes, health diagnosis anddetective work lies ahead. Your life might change. You’re in a powerful and unpredictable relationshiptrend. So far (early 2011) this might have been moretalk than action, but this week and May could cementyou in the age-old way. Don’t expect smooth sailingfor eight years – but do expect excitement! Whateveroccurs this month could “return” in a hugely lucky wayJune 2011-June 2012. Romance, Sunday-Tuesday.But you must change! “Security” sabotages.Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The weeks aheademphasize relationships and opportunities. Bediplomatic, eager and willing. Don’t stubbornly clingto an outmoded position, especially at work or inhealth areas. Recent delays and indecisiveness end– charge ahead, especially on work and machineryfronts. A co-worker might oppose you, although theopposition’s subtle, might exist “between the lines”in a conversation or email, etc. You’ll win such astruggle, but might lose a friend: i.e., win the battle, lose the war. Be forgiving! Home, rest are both sweetSunday to Tuesday. Romance, beauty call midweek.Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You’re in the midst ofa lucky, pleasure-filled, scholastic, romantic, creativesurge! (January to June.) But the four weeks aheademphasize work, health, machinery, duties anddependents. Ah, well – it will run smoothly, anyway.(Except, perhaps, for a wee struggle aroundmidweek when life dictates that you must choosebetween love and money – with money exercisingthe most influence. This, of course, steers you backtoward work.) Recent delays and indecision passnow. Travel, errands and paperwork fill Sunday-Tuesday. Home, midweek. Romance late week– sober, then strong!

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Recent delays end.Charge forward with new ventures, relationships andsituations. The weeks ahead emphasize romance, speculation, risks, good luck, children, beauty, creativity, pleasure and sports – you’ll ride a winningstreak! You face a choice now: on one side are yourambition, your natural personality; on the otherlies love. If the love is in your home, you becomeprotective, nurturing. If the love is “outside,” youmight unconsciously press it, to end it. Chase moneySunday-Tuesday. Casual friends, talk, travel midweek.Home, security Friday/Saturday – buy it!Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks aheadaccent security, domesticity, rest (hibernation)gardening, nutrition, soul, stomach, Mother Nature.Look over your retirement fund/plans, protect yourchildren and their future, repair the house, etc. Andsettle back every once in a while to observe whatyou’re doing – present interests and inclinationshold a clue to where the riches lie in a very luckyperiod on the horizon – June 2011 to June 2012. Thattime might bring a new, better home, the end of anoppressive situation, a child, good things! Your energyand charisma rise nicely Sunday to Tuesday.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Delays end – so domistakes, and wrong-headed money decisions. If needed, correct, alter course now. If you need aguide, look at your long-term future, envision it,where you want to be, and reconsider, alter moneydirections to suit that future. This works best mid-week. The Thursday-Saturday period emphasizes aslightly different money trend: your earnings versusyour net worth, debts, ability to “grow.” (E.g., do Iwork for wages or start a business?) You might startsomething that will grow big in money areas! Retreatearly week. Your energy, charisma soar midweek.
