Rhythms of GraceReligion of Merit vs. Religion of Grace

The title of this essay is borrowed from Eugene H. Peterson’s rendition ofthe passage in Matthew 11:28-30.

To get the full meaning of this text, we need to read it in the context asrecorded in Matthew’s

Gospel, Chapters 11 and 12. A cursory reading of this passage reveals thatJesus made a frontal attack on Jewish religious practices of his time. Jewishreligion had become pharisaical, pretentious, superfluous, and in many ways,hypocritical. The Pharisees, the religious teachers of the synagogues put undueburdens on the faithful. Jesus said, “They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads andput them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift afinger to move them” [Matthew 23:4 NIV]. The Jerusalem Temple and the priestlyclass had turned the Jewish religion into a religion of merit and its institutions intocommercial enterprises. A simple ritual like the observance of Sabbath itselfhad become drudgery. This caused widespread dissatisfaction among the commonpeople and the rejection of religion in general. Jesus sternly denounced thesepseudo-religious pretentions.

We employ terms like “faith” and “religion” alternatively. One way todistinguish these terms is to see faith as an inward disposition while religion asan outward expression of that inward disposition. Outward expressions maymanifest themselves in personal and communal lifestyles, rituals, ceremonies,festivals, attires, works of merit, habits, kosher diets etc. While the disposition offaith within may be simple, deeply personal and spiritual, the outward modes ofexpressions have a penchant to be ostentatious, outlandish, complicated, and attimes pretentious and ludicrous. Both faith and religion are interconnected, butsometimes they tend to be contradictory and at cross-purposes. And when thathappens, religion becomes legalistic, rigid, superstitious and in extremecircumstances, violent and destructive. Therefore some degree of congruencemust exist between what is believed within and what is practiced without.Sometimes we encounter tensions between these two poles; but it is desirable tomaintain equilibrium and turn these tensions toward creative transformation atall levels. One way to achieve this concord and maintain creative tension is tokeep both faith and religion uncomplicated, as simple as possible.

The Bible does not employ these terms in ways we use them now.Religion,as a philosophical concept was not in vogue prior to the Enlightenment. TheEnglish word “religion” comes from the Latin word religre, which means to bind,to hold together – like a bouquet of flowers tied up with a ribbon. Religion holdstogether disparate variegated realities of human existence, awareness and

experiences and provides meaning andpurpose for human life on this planet.Faith is that inner human dispositionthat aspires for true love, security,happiness, absolution and peace ofmind. True faith seeks to live boldly inthe present and hopes for a future thatis bright and prosperous.

Jesus employs the term “yoke”which conveys the same meaning ofthe word “religion.” The meaning ofthese words seems somewhatconstrictive and adverse. On the otherhand, true religion is about truth andreality; it seeks to sift the wheat fromthe chaff and tends to bring sharpdistinction between the sacred and thesecular. Religion is also about grace,liberation and gratitude. I am deeplyenchanted by the phrase “rhythms ofgrace.” The Religion of Grace is aboutcelebration of life in gratitude for allGod’s goodness toward us. Ultimatelythis is what religion and faith should beabout, irrespective of any traditions,ideologies or denominationalpersuasions to which we maysubscribe to.

The practice of religion must bespontaneous, simple and straight-forward. Living out one’s faith shouldnot be tedious, weary and burdensome,but a joyful exuberant experience.Religion should be uncomplicated withfewer rules and regulations, dos anddon’ts. It should not exhaust our psychicand physical energies and economicresources by any means. This is whatthe Sermon on the Mount teaches us[Matthew 5-7]. Many of us think thatthe Sermon adds layers of precepts andrituals to the Ten Commandments and

Torah which are themselves arbitraryand cumbersome. Not so. If we readthe Sermon on the Mount carefully, wewill find that Jesus taught us to live ourdaily life in utter dependence on thefaithfulness of God. A sense of God’sgrace and providence pervades throughthe whole sermon. The Sermonhighlights pragmatic ways in which the“rhythms of grace” can be experiencedin our lives. It is so simple that even achild can understand and practice. TheYoke (religion) of Christ is light, easy,simple and uncomplicated. It is notabout rules and regulations, dos anddon’ts, but a spontaneous joyful gratefulresponse to all what God is to us.

Never theless, we often ignorethese simple teachings of Jesus andgo about crafting complicated beliefsystems and practices. Some Christiantraditions are just as complex as theancient Jewish religion. Mostparishioners are unsure of the essentialfundamentals of Christian faith. Notbeing sure, these folks fall an easy preyto whatever the pastor or priest tellsthem to do and seek to observe thosedictums faithfully asdivine demands. Inthe process, many succumb tolegalistic forms of religion. Thesereligious practices drain them of theirenergy and resources withoutappreciable returns. Much of the blamefor this nominal spirituality must beplaced on the shoulders of religiousfunctionaries like us. Some of us havea tendency to repackage the simpletruths of the abundant life in Christ withextraneous precepts and dictums; wedo so often to justify our own existenceand maintain the status quo. After all,pastors and priests have been trainedfor their profession. They spend yearslearning and training in priest crafts. Sowe seek to present our faith assophisticated systems of moralprecepts and demand compliance fromtheologically illiterate folks. We, likethe old serpent, tell our unsuspectingparishioners, “It can’t be that simple!There must be more to our faith thanmeets the eye.” And we go aboutadding precepts that are complicatedand burdensome. The question is: Howcan we regain the simple faith – a faiththat is pragmatic and meaningful andyet retains the trust of our parishioners?

If that be the case, a life of graceshould demand the least effort and

investment on the part of the faithful. Inother words, for minimum investmentswe must expect to reap bountifulharvests. Jesus said, “If you have faiththe size of a mustard seed, you willsay to this mountain, ‘Move from hereto there,’ and it will move; and nothingwill be impossible to you” [Mat. 17:20].Jesus’ way of comparing the size of amustard seed to a mountain helps usgrasp the amazing power of faith atwork. It is not about a mountain of faiththat moves a mound of pebbles, rathera faith like a tiny seed that brings downthe mountain.

One of the fundamental emphasesof the New Testament is that thepractice of religion ought to be simple,meaningful and just, while beingdynamic, transformative and creative.The simplicity and the effortlessnessshould be apparent in exercising ourfaith in God’s goodness, love and grace,and living confidently and boldly by thatassurance on a daily basis. TrustingGod should cost nothing. It should be asimple uncomplicated act. Even a littlechild should be able to learn andpractice religion at his or her level ofunderstanding. Jesus told his audienceon more than one occasion that unlessthey became like little children, theywould not enter the Kingdom of God[Matthew 18:3]. What Jesus meant wasthat a simple childlike faith is all thatwe need to live a life filled withhappiness, contentment, adventure andgrowth. Such a faith would workwonders in our lives and transformcommunities.

Although the exercise of faith maybe a simple task, it has the potential tounleash creative forces that canprofoundly transform personal lives andcommunities. The peace within, theovercoming victory and blessings allaround are dividends realized by thissimple faith. The church is called tolive and witness to this life. Jesus said,“You are the salt of the earth …You arethe light of the world” [Matthew 5:13-14]. How much more can it be madeplain and simple? Most Christians tryto live and move at this level, living atpeace with themselves, their familiesand communities. We commit our livesto God, become active in a local churchand live out our faith boldly. We seek toemulate the teachings of Jesus and walkin his footsteps as best as we can.

Following Jesus invariably unleashesa flood of blessings in our lives. Theseblessings also flow out to bless others.(Read Ephesians Chapter 1). You willbe amazed at the magnitude ofblessings promised to those who loveGod and walk according to God’s Word.This does not mean that our lives arefree from trials, temptations and pain.Precisely for this reason, we hold on toa faith that is vital for our survival andsanity. Caught up as we are with theprecarious nature of contemporaryexistence and the uncertainties of thefuture, many of us lead this simple lifeof faith and trust in God that has provedto be more than sufficient for our day-to-day existence and survival.

Authentic Religion demands littleor no cultic exercises from the faithfultoward living an abundant life. Theinvestments we make are minimal incomparison to the blessings accruedin return. The act of trusting God issimple while the blessings we reap arebeyond anything we could ever ask orimagine [Ephesians 3:16-21]. Somefaith traditions demand much from thefaithful, but the returns are negligibleand elusive. Such demands may alsobring the faithful into bondage andservitude. In extreme cases, suchreturns turn out to be highly destructive.They cause immense pain and loss oflives to people both inside and outsidetheir fold. Think of all the suicidebombers who kill and maim hundredsof innocent people, all for the sake ofattaining personal absolution andeternal bliss! Christianity has also beenfound guilty of this folly. Some traditionswithin Christianity have committedheinous crimes against humanity.These groups have hijacked the faith tojustify their actions, to annihilate wholegroups of people inside and outsidetheir folds. In all humility, the followersof Christ must repent of our proclivityfor evil and seek God’s forgiveness andgrace. On the other hand, we must seekto channel the transforming powers ofChrist to bless others outside our fold.Ultimately, Christian witness is allabout one beggar telling another beggarwhere to find food and shelter. This iswhere the simplicity of an authenticfaith —rhythms of grace — isexperienced and manifested.

“Love your emenies, do good to those who hate you, blessed those who curseyou, pray for those who mistreat you,. If someone strikes you on your right cheek,turn to him the other cheek.” Luke 6 : 27-29.

The often quoted verse ‘If someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn to himthe other cheek’ gives us an impression that we are not to have a retaliatory attitude,and better be submissive to counter hate and violence. The fact is that it is neither to beretaliatory nor to be submissive. Look at the complete words of Jesus at 27 to 29 ofLuke chap 6. It is so profound that it has influenced great leaders in the history whowere against hate and violence.Jesus begins with ‘love your enemy’ and continues, i) when the enemy hates you, you do good (karmana)ii) when the enemy curse you, you bless him(vacha)iii) when the enemy mistreat you , you pray for him (manasa)andiv) when the enemy strikes your cheek, turn to him the other.As Christains we are fine with the first three steps. Manasa, vacha & karmana to lovethy enemy is fine with us. But the fourth?

Look at it carefully. The basis is ‘love thy enemy’. Do we think the enemy is goingto love us back? The onus to demonstate we love the enemy is on us. The question ishow to manifest ‘turning the other cheek” in its context? If the ‘turning the other cheek’is not coming from the conviction within, then ‘turning the other cheek’ is ineffective andmeaningless. It’s based on love thy enemy, an assertiveness of Christain Love. It is theChristain ‘Dharma’. It can neither be aggression nor be submission, but assertiveness;assertiveness based on the rock called the Christian love.

In the early days of her service Mother Teresa was requesting for money to helpthe dying & destitudes. It is said that instead of giving arms, an arrogent fanatic spit onher. Mother with her eternal calmness, & no malice in her voice said, ‘thank you, thatis for me. Kindly donate for the dying & destitudes’. Isn’t it an act of turning the othercheek?

Mother’s reply was not a smart answer or to shame/defeat the man, but wasemerging from her care to the dying and destitutes, her Christain Dharma.

My father only reluctantly carried his father’s ashes to Banares,mostly to respect my grandfather’s annual pilgrimage there. Thereluctance was understandable, since my father’s sacredgeographies, richly varied, were strongly anchored in the south,beginning with the Panduranga temple he visited daily to annualtrips en famille to Banswadi Anjaneya in Palani and to Guruvayuras well as to the local Bhagavathi shrines in his ancestral village.As a ritualistic Hindu, he participated as enthusiastically inappeasing the goddess with the spectacular goat sacrifice as hedid in daily worship. He had little in common with my mother’sscriptural orientation: her daily circumambulations were confinedto Tamil, Malayalam, Sanskrit and English texts.

Nevertheless, my parents’ generation fostered a long, intimateand nurturing connection with Christianity, particularly for theirchildren. Born in St Philomena’s Hospital, Bengaluru, I was savedfrom “double pneumonia” at the age of two in an oxygen tent at theZenana Mission hospital. All my schooling was at Bishop CottonGirls’ School, which, with the Boys’ school, served a long line ofmy siblings. I thoroughly enjoyed daily chapel attendance at school,but only because it allowed me to hear the piano and to sing. Twostaunchly Catholic Pre University and Degree institutions saw methrough college. As an adult, when I was misdiagnosed in one ofBengaluru’s large private hospitals, I took refuge in St. Martha’sHospital. And my sunset years may well be spent in one of theChristian old age homes around Bengaluru.

Devotion and scepticismThis autobiographical indulgence is a riposte to the anguished

handwringing of our Home Minister, who sees the threat of Christianconversion in every gesture of compassion. It also counters thepoisonous outpourings of assorted members of Hindutvaorganisations. Given that the most important rites of passage ofmy life were via Christian missionary institutions, I should havelong joined that religion’s embrace. Yet, hundreds who similarlypassed through the institutions I have named and they came from avariety of religions were usually strengthened in their original faith.My friends and siblings have remained devout and unwavering intheir religious persuasion; others, like me, after an intimateacquaintance with religion both at home and in the world, havedeveloped a scepticism of it altogether.

I am hard pressed to think of anyone who actually joined theflock.

Did this range of outcomes from prolonged exposure to Christianmissionary institutions occur because of or in spite of it? I believethat the answer is both because it helps us to stave off the inevitableresponse: that I belong to a caste and class that was exempt fromof the institutions’ proselytising zeal. That Indian Christians havecontributed to education, health, and social work immensely bearsreiteration. But it is also worth remembering that present day

Christianity, unlike its 19thcentury forebears, does notplace conversion at the heart ofits programme. Or where it does,as in Pentecostal Christianity,its proselytising success iscounted among other Christiansects.

Certainly, there are stronghistorical and geographical rootsto this assertion, since southIndia has been hospitable tomany varieties of Christianity formuch longer than any other partof the sub continent. Eachsouthern language owes a greatgrammatical debt to the system-atised efforts of a C.P. Brown(Telugu), a Ferdinand Kittel(Kannada), a Hermann Gundert(Malayalam) or a ConstanzoBeschi (Tamil). No doubt theinterest of the missionaries wasto master alien languages inorder to write and distribute theirbiblical tracts in the lay tongue,but the interest in, and passionfor, Indian native languagescontinued even when the fruit ofsuch labour in terms of savingsouls was far from certain.

The overwhelming presenceof Christian missionaries in theworlds of education, health andsocial work, combined with therelative absence of governmentin these spheres, gave peoplelike my parents their onlyopportunities to pursue theirbroader aspirations of quickupward mobility for their children.

In spite of all this, we arenot Chris-tians. Or have wealways been “Christian”, if wetake this to mean that we havedeveloped the resources forpublic morality and a spirit oftoleration, delinked fromreligion?
