CTDA Presidents Report October, 2008 November promises to be a busy month in town. The National Gallery of Victoria bus tour will be in town on Thursday October 30 with about 40 people. On Monday, November 3, the National Monaro Club will be gathering in Clunes with a large number of cars and possibly 400-600 people. Shepparton Probus Club will hosted in Clunes on 20 November. Occasionally, groups come to Clunes unannounced. If anyone knows of an impending visit, please let the CTDA know so appropriate preparations can be made and coordinated – catering provided, parking reserved etc. It has been a pleasure to write letters of support for a number of organisations applying for grants to enhance there facilities and/or services. It is very pleasing to note that the applications are for projects not just for the benefit of the members of the particular organisations but for the general community. The Clunes Community Group has been working with Council’s consultant to establish a long-term vision for Clunes. A public meeting will be announced shortly and I urge all residents to attend so all views are expressed. I will end this report as I always do. Please join the CTDA and attend the meetings. Have your say about the town, its services or lack thereof, and how you would like to see it now and in twenty years. Chris Fenner President
Firstly, let me introduce myself. My name is Athol
CHAFFEY and I am a Leading Senior Constable attached to the
Central Goldfields Traffic Management Unit (a.k.a
Maryborough Highway Patrol) and I am filling in for Leading
Senior Constable Bob BIRD, whilst he is on extended leave. I
will be applying for the permanent position of Officer in Charge
of Clunes Police when it is vacant in the near future.
I have met many locals and business owners from the town in
the 3 - 4 weeks that I have been in the town so far. Everyone
has been very friendly and welcoming to me.
One thing that I have noticed is how fiercely proud the
locals are of their beautiful town, and what‟s not to be proud
of. Now Clunes is not exactly a hotbed of crime, which is great,
but times have changed and the days of leaving your house/cars
unlocked have definitely gone. Unfortunately with the influx of
visitors and people passing through the propensity for crimes of
opportunity are there.
The role of a local copper, in a small town, is to get involved
in the community as much as possible, as I plan to do if
successful in obtaining the vacancy, as whom ever replaces Bob
BIRD will be part of the community as well.
The partnership between the local copper and the community
is advantageous to both parties in the exchange of
information. The locals that I have spoken to all want to know
what is going on in their town and the local knowledge that is
out there in the community is a valuable tool to Victoria Police.
I would like to hear if you would be interested in establishing
a Neighbourhood Watch Program for Clunes and district. I am
not calling for volunteers yet or going to lob jobs on any person
who responds, this is just to gauge public interest.
Enquires to Leading Senior Constable Athol CHAFFEY

What is Touch for Health?
Touch for Health kinesiology is a system of natural health care which combines muscle monitoring (testing) with
principles of Chinese medicine to assess energy and body function, applying a range of gentle yet powerful healing
techniques to improve health, wellbeing and vitality.
Simple yet powerful corrections are applied, using muscle testing to create balance within the meridian system of
the body – on all levels. TFHK addresses the structural, nutritional and emotional stresses common in our everyday
life. Using muscle testing, benefits are attained by acupuncture meridian energy, identifying foods that raise the body‟s
energy, reducing stress and pain, enhancing physical performance, improving vision, sensory input and brain function,
and by improving posture, co-ordination and learning difficulties.
A fundamental premise of TFHK is that the body has innate healing energy and is doing its best to care for itself,
but sometimes needs assistance to achieve this state.
What is TFHK used for?
Pain
Stress & Confusion
Depressive Tendencies
Digestive Disorders
Fatigue & Tiredness
Back Problems
Learning Disabilities
Allergic Responses
Respiratory Issues
Nervous Disorders
Sports Injuries

Don‟t forget the Sunscreen With warmer weather comes the risk of sun burn. The most
serious form of skin cancer, melanoma, is strongly related to
episodes of sun burn. However, the total amount of sun exposure
over a lifetime can also be a factor. Therefore as we get older
the risk of sun cancer increases. As particularly rural men often
spend more time in the sun than women their risk can be
greater. The good news is that most skin cancers can be
prevented with sun protection behavior (i.e. slip, slop, slap) and
can be treated if detected early. Remember to slip, slop, slap
whenever you are in the sun.

“Self Life not Shelf Life”
A film about the
Positive Images of Aging
Sixty Clunes luminaries attended the world premiere of
the documentary on Positive Images of Ageing, “Self Life
not Shelf Life”.The supper room of the town hall saw
witness to the superbly shot and edited 45 minute film.
Created to coincide with senior‟s week 08, the film,
devised and produced by Karen McMullen, show cased
the non- traditional view of getting old in the intercut
interviews of the 17 or so people featured in the worthy
film.
Avoiding bathos and making sure to underline
positivity the documentary explores the paramount
importance of companionship with old friends and
partners, with charming and occasionally hilarious results.
“Putting the backdrop forward” as Kerry Loughrey said
in her opening remarks, in her guise as chairperson of the
Neighbourhood house under whose aegis the film was
made. The backdrops being the people of Clunes and
districts, and what a startling and informative bunch they
are.
The wonderful soundtrack over which the
immaculately edited images overlay was provided by two
of the interviewees. Singer song writer Stephanie
Falconer, double bass player Janet Gaden and the U3A
Orchestra. It is hoped that another screening is possible for
those who missed out.
This correspondent after seeing this film is enthused about
getting a little older and wiser. And the refreshments
provided afterward superb under the backdrop of the
splendid town hall auditorium. Devils on horseback and
champagne, yum!
Congratulations to all concerned

The Victorian Seniors Festival this year saw the Clunes Neighbourhood House
taking part in a year long project on the positive Images Of Ageing. During this time
I was able to interview a number of people from Clunes and the Central Highlands
of Victoria on the Passion in their lives, their families, interests, activities and
highlights over the years. My small crew and I came away from the project with a
sense of awe and inspiration of our senior members of the community. After each
film shoot we were left with the feeling that we were involved in an extraordinary
community event.
One of the most outstanding moments of the project was our interview with Amy
Cook and the Torney family. Amy touched our hearts with her grace and respect for
the project. During the final days of editing (during seniors week) Amy sadly passed
away. Therefore we would like to take this opportunity to dedicate the project to her
and to thank her family for allowing us into her home to capture the spirit of this
lovely lady.
A huge thanks goes to all participants in the documentary, each will receive their
own copy of the DVD and David Brown and Jade Smithard who assisted me in the
film making process. And thanks to our sponsors for making the project possible.
Karen McMullan - Coordinator Clunes Neighbourhood House.
Approximately four years ago, Clunes resident artist
designer Clayton Edwards came up with the idea of to redevelop
and improve the bottle museum to make it more attractive and
visitor friendly. After some initial setbacks, through
perseverance and dedication Clayton‟s brilliant and innovative
ideas are finally taking form and slowly coming to fruition.
With a gratefully received grant of $20000 and enthusiastic
support from the Hugh Williamson Foundation together with the
assistance of Heritagecare volunteers, Clayton is turning a
somewhat overwhelming display of approximately 7000 bottles
into an interesting, informative and fascinating walk down
memory lane.
The shop front facades in stage two are indicative of the way
the bottles would have been displayed in the original setting e.g.
chemist shop etc., and in the next stage, a pub and an industrial
area are planned, audio-visual screens will also be installed to
provide our visitors with detailed information on the various
exhibits.
As the project unfolds, the museum is beginning to attract a lot
of interest from tourists and bottle collecting enthusiasts, partly
--->>>
due to some ongoing stories about the museum which have
appeared in the Australian Bottles and Collectables Review
which has a large circulation Australia wide and overseas. The
recent installation of the Clunes‟s Primary School children‟s
mural in the revamped Information Centre attracted good media
coverage and has been favourably commented on by visitors to
the centre. The committee intends to pursue an increasing
promotion campaign over the coming months as the project
progresses.
Tourism is the life blood of the township of Clunes and the
Bottle Museum is proud to be doing its bit to help attract visitors
to our lovely and historic town.
We sincerely hope to gain the support of our fellow residents of
Clunes and surrounding areas.
Come and pay us a visit, our extremely large and “resident
rodents” Mollie and Milton will be here to greet you. We will
keep you posted on further developments

Sudoku Puzzles (NEW)
Farmer Ed refers to cattle as vobs, bears as srus, horses as uqes, & pigs as crops. What in the world does he call sheep?
Answer
Vos. A very tricky puzzle! The adjective form of cattle is bovine. Remove the ine, read it backward, & then add an s, & you have vobs. By the same reasoning, bear = ursine = srus, horse = equine = uqes, pigs = porcine = crops, & sheep = ovine = vos. Even if you got this extremely difficult puzzle right, please don't go around calling animals by these names!
Post your answers on the web-
site, for your chance to win.

REPORT BY CR TIM HAYES
CAMERON WARD COUNCILLOR Due to the editorial deadlines set by the Clunes Community
News, it is not known – at the time of writing this report –
whether there will be an election in the Cameron Ward in the
forthcoming Council Elections. Nominations for the elections
close at 12 noon on 28 October and, should there be more than
one nomination, an election will be conducted by postal voting
and will conclude on Saturday 29 November. I have previously
indicated that I will be a candidate for the election.
When I stood for Council in the March 2006 By-election, I
nominated „Economic Development‟ as my main priority and
for the need to promote Clunes, with its outstanding heritage
features, as a desirable tourist destination. For towns such as
Clunes to remain sustainable, we need to have a viable
commercial sector and a vibrant community that encourages
residents to participate in sporting, social and cultural
organizations.
At that time, one third of the commercial premises in Fraser
Street were unoccupied and the concept of „Booktown‟ – the
development of which I am proud to have been involved - had
not been envisaged. Today, interest in Clunes for commercial, as
well as residential, properties is unprecedented – however the
need is yet to be fulfilled. More work needs to be undertaken on
attracting the right type of retail businesses, in encouraging the
owners of commercial properties to bring their buildings up to
acceptable standards and to identify existing buildings and land
for future retail uses.
Hepburn Shire is probably the only rural shire in Victoria
that does not have an Economic Development strategy. That will
be addressed in 2009 and I hope to have some role in
formulating that strategy.
The CTDA and the Clunes Newsletter do not endorse this or any candidate. All candidates will be
provided with the same opportunity.
When the history of this era of the Hepburn Shire is written,
I will at least have some consolation in the fact that no-one has
been able to point the finger at me regarding my demeanour or
behaviour, that my actions have never resulted in the Council
having to receive legal advice and that I have never been
accused of bullying.
Despite these problems I have to say that the majority of
Councillors have co-operated and worked very well together and
at the end of the day this is the true test of democracy. The
increase in the number of Councillors from 5 to 7, as from this
election, will I believe improve the decision making processes.
I look forward to representing the interests of Cameron Ward
during the next term of Council.

U/14s started the season well although being defeated, byes
and no balls being their downfall. Kye Fordham and Ben
Newton, getting off to a good start with the bat, both getting into
the 30s in a good opening partnership. The central Highlands
match turned into a batting and bowling training session only
lasting about 4 hours, though the lack of players available are in
the squad, with a very talented display of batting, bowling and
fielding.
President Barry has core aerated the oval and seeded it with
rye grass, the club again thanks The Shire Council for it‟s
assistance with this work. The ground will benefit greatly by
this effort.
Another motor has been fitted to the pitch mower, it will be
great to have a reliable mower, thanks to Jim Roberson for the
use of his workshop. only 2 teams this season u/14s and a/
reserve, a/res starts on 25th Oct, playing St. Arnaud at St.
Arnaud, with a good turn up of young players at practice, all
looks good for season 2008-9, players will have to train hard
and apply themselves to hold their position in the team. The club
is going to concentrate on youth this season as they are the
future of the club.
The club also entertained the new in coming Wesley students
