New Trier Vocal Jazz Ensemble

New Trier’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble is the most ad-vanced, and only curricular, vocal jazz ensemble at New Trier. The group rehearses each school day for 40 minutes, occasionally breaking into student-led sectionals and smaller ensemble rehearsals for certain performances. The ensemble sings primarily vocal jazz and contemporary repertoire, but occasionally performs more traditional choral literature when appropriate.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble (VJE) performs at several school concerts throughout the year in addition to many community performances both locally and throughout the Chicagoland area. In 2007, VJE contributed to the recording that resulted in the National Grammy Signature School Award for the New Trier Music Department. Also, in 2007, VJE recorded the song “A Pledge of Love” which won an Honorary Recognition Award as an entry for the theme song for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In the spring of 2009, VJE had the honor of premiering a commissioned arrangement of “A Sleepin’ Bee” by Darmon Meader and work-ing with him first hand on the chart prior to the performance.

VJE performs regularly at regional vocal jazz festivals and will have the honor of participating in the New York Voices Jazz Festival this April at St. Charles North High School in St. Charles, Illinois.

The New Trier vocal jazz program also consists of one extra-curricular group, Maiden Voyage, and an after school vocal improvisation class. The choral program at New Trier consists of nine curricular choirs, including the VJE, with roughly 300 students who participate in one or more choir classes throughout each school day.

New Trier Jazz Ensemble 1

Jazz Ensemble 1 is the most advanced of four curric-ular jazz ensembles at New Trier High School. All jazz ensembles rehearse for 40 minutes each school day, and all students receive a grade and academic credit for the course. Students in Jazz Ensemble 1 rehearse three days per week as a large ensemble, spend one day each week in student-led sectionals, and rehearse as small combos one day each week. Ad-ditional jazz educators from the Chicago music com-munity assist in directing combos. Guitarists in this ensemble also rehearse once a week as a jazz guitar ensemble. Wind, percussion, and bass students in New Trier jazz ensembles must also be concurrently enrolled in either a concert band or orchestra.

New Trier’s jazz program has a rich history of per-forming with amazing guest artists, including: Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, the rhythm sections of the Count Basie Orchestra and the Tito Puente Latin Jazz Orchestra, Bob Mintzer, Clark Terry, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Frank Foster, Jon Irabagon, and countless others.

For 28 years New Trier High School has been hosting the New Trier Jazz Festival, (since 2004, known as The Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier High School). This non-competitive festival hosts more

than 40 middle and high school jazz bands from around the country for a day of performances, clinics, special-interest workshops, instrument master-classes, sight-reading bands, professional small group performances, military and college big band performances, and an evening concert featuring New Trier’s Jazz Ensemble 1 along with a guest big band. Past guest bands have included The Count Basie Orchestra (4 times), The Buddy Rich Big Band, The Duke Ellington Orchestra directed by Mercer Ellington, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and on February 5th, 2011, the Mingus Big Band.

New Trier Jazz Ensembles would like to thank these very important people:

Terell Stafford has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Known for being a gifted and versatile player with a voice all his own, Stafford combines lyricism and a deep love of melody with a spirited, adventurous edge. This uniquely expressive, well-defined musical talent allows Stafford the ability to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predeces-sors while making his own inroads. Since the mid-1990’s Stafford has performed with groups such as Benny Golson’s Sextet, McCoy Tyner’s Sextet, the Kenny Barron Sextet, the Frank Wess Quintet, the Jimmy Heath Big Band, the Clayton Brothers Quintet, and the Jon Faddis Orchestra. Currently, he is a member of the GRAMMY award winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra as well as drummer Matt Wilson’s group, “Arts and Crafts,” and drummer Alvin Queen’s group, “Alvin Queen and the Organ-ics.” Stafford has recorded five albums as a leader, including the critically acclaimed Taking Chances (MaxJazz 2007), and is heard on over 80 albums as a sideman.

An educator as well as a performer, Stafford currently holds the positions of Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia and is a clinician for the prestigious Vail Foundation in Colorado and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Program. He has also served as a member of the faculty for the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies in New York.

Stafford was born in Miami and raised in Chicago and Silver Spring, Maryland. He received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Maryland in 1988 and a Masters of Music from RutgersUniversity in 1993.

New Trier High School at a glance...

New Trier Township High School District 203 is a comprehensive four-year high school in Northfield and Win-netka, Illinois, along the Lake Michigan shore and approximately 16 miles north of Chicago. New Trier serves Chicago’s North Shore suburban communities of Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette, Winnetka and por-tions of Glenview and Northbrook — communities that reflect a tradition of support for academic and cultural achievement. Freshmen are housed on the Northfield Campus. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are housed on the Winnetka Campus.

Governed by its own Board of Education, the district serves six sender public school districts (kindergarten through eighth grade), each with its own governing board. Local private and parochial schools also graduate students who advance to New Trier High School.

As evidence of the New Trier motto, “to commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the ser-vice of humanity,” New Trier offers numerous opportunities for learning and involvement outside of the class-room in activities, athletics, fine/performing arts, and social service, including:

• More than 150 clubs and other student activities, with an extensive social service component• 30 interscholastic athletic teams (winning more athletic state championships than any high school in Illinois interscholastic history) and an extensive intramural program• Fine/Performing Arts programs recognized among the nation’s top 25 by the U.S. Department of Education, including a Grammy Award-winning Music Department that was cited as the “best music education program in the country.” (2007).

New Trier High School’s Music Department presents some 25 formal evening concerts and more than 50 addi-tional performances, including guest appearances at conferences, music festivals, community service organiza-tions, junior high and elementary schools, and television-radio presentations. The department either produces or co-produces 3 musical theatre productions each year. A voluntary Pep Band also provides entertainment at athletic events. Soundtraks, a student-run audio and video recording studio broadcasts concerts to more than 40,000 homes via cable television, radio and world-wide on the Internet. All concerts are archived and can be viewed on www.ntjazz.com. Non-performance courses include a composition-based music theory sequence and classroom piano.
