Principal’s Message
As I walked down the halls and popped into
classrooms, it was wonderful to see so many
familiar faces during the first few days of
school. I would like to take this opportunity
to
extend a warm welcome to students and families
new to King George. I look forward to visiting with
all of our families during our Welcome Back BBQ on
Thursday, September 11. If you are unable to
attend this event, please feel free to stop by the
office and introduce yourself the next time you are
in the building.
I am looking forward to another fantastic year at
our school. There are many activities that take
place over the course of the year and we look
forward to your family participating in these
events. Please consider attending Parent Council
meetings to hear more about what is going on in
our school.
Please read the school handbook that was sent
home last week. There is lots of valuable
information about the programs and services that
are offered through our school and our community.
If you have questions, comments, or concerns at
any time, please contact your child’s teacher. I look
forward to working with your family to ensure a
positive learning experience for all of our students.

Library News
Welcome back to King George’s library for 2014-2015!
My name is Ms. Watkins and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as I will be the new librarian this year at King George School. This is my third year teaching at K.G and my first year as teacher-librarian. My role this year is teacher librarian and H.A.L.E.P.
Previously, I taught in northern Manitoba, southern Manitoba and overseas. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again this fall and meeting all the students and families. Please come and take a peak and see what is new in the library and say hello.
We are very fortunate to have the Chapters Indigo grant for the third and final year. I will be putting the new books out on display for everyone to see. We are continually building our selection of books in other languages, so please come and see what we have! If there is a series or a book that you believe we absolutely need in our library, please come and talk to me and I will see what I can do.
If you would like to volunteer in the library, please come and see me. We are always looking for volunteers to help shelve books, cut out laminating, assemble books, etc.
This year I plan on organizing special library times either at recess or at lunch time for students to take advantage of free time to read. Stay tuned for upcoming details! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to come and talk to me.
Happy reading!
Ms. Watkins

Election of the executive will be happening at this meeting, so if you would like to nominate someone or you would like to let your name stand for one of the executive positions please join us. The purpose of HALEP is to engage students in curricular enrichment activities that will
strengthen and expand their critical thinking, literacy, numeracy, and creative thinking
skills. The HALEP teacher works with students in grades 3 – 8.
There are 3 main components to the program:
1. Total Talent Portfolio – This is completed in the fall. Students will discover what type
of learner they are and their learning strengths.
2. Enrichment Clusters - This happens twice in the school year. It is a unique stu-
dent-driven learning opportunity. Students work in small groups of no more than
15 kids who are all interested in the same topic or “cluster”. They get to experi-
ence, explore, and apply new skills to the solution or investigation of real life situa-
tions. At the end of the clusters, students will present their work at an assembly.
3. HALEP UNITS– The HALEP teacher works together with middle years classroom
teachers to plan specialized units. The information from the Total Talent Portfolio
is utilized in planning these units to support the diversity of all learners in the class-
room. Most activities take place in the school. To support learning experiences,
students also have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers or to go on field
trips.
We are always looking for volunteers that are willing to share their talents, interests,
hobbies, and careers with our students! If you would like more information about
HALEP or would like to share your skills with us, please contact Ms. Watkins at
school(729-3990) or by email [email protected]

Building Student Success with Aboriginal Parents BSSAP
For the past couple of years we have had a parent program that meets once a week on Tuesday evenings. The parents have learned how to make star blankets and do beadwork. Our parent evening will resume again this year on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:30 p.m. Please let us know at the school ahead of time if you would like to join us as the doors are locked and we need to be available to let you in. During this year, I will coordinate student and parent activities that focus on Aboriginal culture. We will wel-come guests into our school including a Metis fiddler, square dancers, and powwow dancers. We will have a few fundraisers during the year to support BSSAP and our King George 3rd Annual Spring Powwow. I would appreciate input from you, the parents, as you will be my partners and together we will continue to grow the program. I welcome you to bring your culture and traditions, and activities you would like to share with the group, such as dancing, fiddling, beadwork, cooking, or any other ideas you might have. I look forward to a new and exciting year with the BSSAP program at King George School. You can contact me at the school at 204-729-3990. Shawna Mozdzen BSSAP Coordinator
DOs 1. SLOW DOWN. Slow to a safe speed where you can. Carefully watch
for kids crossing in between parked cars. 2. STOP FOR BUSES. When a bus’ lights are flashing, it means that
children are getting in or out. Traffic must stop in both directions until the lights stop flashing—and no sooner.
3. PUT YOUR CAR IN PARK. When dropping off your children, don’t just come to a stop, but put your vehicle in park while they exit.
4. PICK A SPOT. Discuss with your child a designated pick-up and drop-off spot that is easily and safely accessible. That way, kids aren’t wan-dering the streets to find their ride home.
5. ALWAYS SIGNAL. Signal when changing lanes, turning onto another street or when moving from a parked position.
DON’Ts 1. DON’T BE DISTRACTED. Put down the coffee or cell phone and put
your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. 2. DON’T PARK IN NO PARKING OR NO STOPPING ZONES. Wait-
ing drivers may become impatient and attempt unsafe manoeuvres to pass, putting you and your child directly in harm’s way.
3. DON’T IDLE. If you stop for longer than 10 seconds, it is more fuel efficient to shut your car off and turn it back on when it’s time to go.
4. DON’T ROLL THROUGH STOP SIGNS. Make a complete stop at every stop sign and check for traffic both on the road and the side-walk.
5. DON’T IGNORE SCHOOL SAFETY PATROLS. Patrols are there for one purpose: to protect youngsters as they cross the street. When crossing guards extend their flags and enter the street you must come to a complete stop and wait for all pedestrians to cross,
proceeding only when the patrol has returned to the curb.
